Postnatal Exercise
laire Mockridge is an Ante/ Postnatal Fitness Expert and is here to give you some exercises to try at home to help strengthen your pelvic floor/abdominals and relieve tension. Pelvic tilt This exercise helps relieve tension in your lower back, re-aligns your abdominals and strengthens your pelvic floor. Start with your legs bent, knees and feet hip distance apart, hands on your pelvis, and shoulders relaxed. Draw your abdominals in, activate your pelvic floor muscles and flatten your lower back into the floor. Breathe out as you push the lower back into the floor, and breathe in as you return your pelvis/lower back to a level position. Scissor arms Release tension in your shoulders from constant lifting, carrying and feeding. Start with your arms above your chest (palms facing each other). Ignite the abdominal muscles/pelvic floor and keep
6
these muscles held in. Slide your shoulders down away from your ears. Breathe out as one arm goes over your head, the other arm floats down by your side, then switch arms. Keep your abdominals actives, and the shoulders, lower back and ribcage must stay still. Leg lifts To strengthen the glutes. Lie on your front with your abdominals pulled in. Your shoulders are down, and your pubic bone/ hip bones are pressed into the floor. Keep the abdominals drawn up underneath you, lift your straightened leg off the floor and squeeze your bottom, then lower the leg back down without hunching the shoulders/moving the pelvis. Change legs to work the other side. For details on Claire’s mother and baby Pilates and Fitness Classes, see www.corebaby.co.uk and www. mummiesandbuggies.co.uk, or phone Claire on 07747 656550.

The Roy De Wired Memorial Concert 2012 n memory of the great man and to raise funds for musicians of the future
In 2011 the Roy De Wired Scholarship Foundation was set up in honour of much loved local musician Roy De Wired who sadly died in January of that year. Wanting to create a legacy that reflected his love of music, and echoed the support he offered fellow musicians, the foundation was established to help children and young musicians develop their talents. With fundraising events being held throughout the year, the main occasion of 2011 was the memorial concert, where local musicians, family, friends, and fans came together to pay their respects and help raise money for the foundation. Almost 1000 tickets were sold, and the evening was an incredible and emotional celebration of Roy and his music. With fantastic performances by all, notably Jake Bugg, the Fab Four, and Stack it Up. The concert raised just over £7500, which was put to work in local schools where, with the help of the MLC Academy, the foundation has been able to roll out a number of projects. The aim is to bring as much free music as possible to the children of Nottingham. Helping with their early development, and clearing the burden of cost for parents who may not be able to afford it. The Junior Ukulele lessons and Sesame Street Workshops have been a great success, and through these projects the foundation has managed to reach over 3000 children in its first year. The aim of the projects is to give children a love of music, teaching them to express
8
themselves, gain confidence, and also to provide a means for parents and caregivers to make music with children regardless of musical training. Most importantly it’s free! In order to continue it’s work, and to pay tribute to the legacy of Roy De Wired, the Scholarship Foundation is extremely excited to announce that it is holding its second concert this September. Hosted by the BBC’s Mark Dennison, the line up includes the Pesky Alligators, Richie Muir, the Herb Birds, Joe Strange, the Money, the Riverbank House Band, and many many more. Date: Sunday 16th September 2012 Venue: Rock City – Talbot Street – Nottingham Ticket Price: £10 Tickets available from: Rock City – See – Ticketmaster - Alt tickets – Gigantic And from venues across Notts : the Approach (Friar Lane – Market Square) – Fuzz Guitars (Abbey Road – West Bridgford) – The Riverbank Restaurant and Bar (Trent Bridge) – Tom Browns (Gunthorpe) Doors Open: 6:30 Age Limit: 14 and above It’s expected this years concert will be even bigger and better than last year, so gather your friends, gather your family, and make sure you’re part of it!! www.roydewired.com Roy De Wired Memorial Concert 2011 - photo by Ross Bailey”

West Bridgford Rotary Club
G
eorge Golledge, recently elected President of the Rotary Club of West Bridgford, is keen to dispel the misguided belief that Rotary is a gentlemen’s club which only enjoys long lunches. The West Bridgford club, which has both male and female members, is actively involved in making a real difference to both the local and International community. Locally the club supports drug awareness education in primary schools, provides job interview training in secondary schools, donates food and essential items to a drop-in centre and raises funds for the Maggies cancer centre and the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance.
In addition to all of this club members also enjoy a very varied and active social life. If you would like to be part of the world’s largest volunteer network with 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs in over 200 countries why not come along to one of our weekly meetings at the Country Cottage Hotel in Ruddington? To book in for a meeting please contact the President and Membership Officer George Golledge at gosh.golledge@ntlworld.com
Internationally the club works with its twinned club in Cape Town to provide educational help and assistance to Aids orphans, supplies Aquaboxes to disaster areas and plays its part in supporting the Rotary International goal to eradicate Polio worldwide.

Choose your personal care assistant with confidence
P
eople in Nottinghamshire who need social care and support are being urged to use a directory of reliable paid workers.
Support With Confidence, which has been set up by Nottinghamshire County Council, is a web-based directory of potential employees who can help older and disabled people with things like: getting them out of bed, washed and dressed, taking them out for trips e.g. the pub or theatre, walking people’s dogs, helping out with shopping, housework or the garden.
Councillor Kevin Rostance, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “More and more people are now receiving personal budgets, which means they can manage their own social care. This is fantastic and it gives people real choice and control over which services they have and who helps them. “Support With Confidence gives people the reassurance that these carers are reliable, so we would urge anyone who is thinking of hiring a personal assistant to use this scheme.”
Everyone on the directory has received training and has been checked by the County Council.
To find out more about Support With Confidence and to use the directory phone 08449 80 80 80 or visit: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ supportwithconfidence
People who receive a personal budget* for their social care can then select who they want from the directory to provide a particular service. They will then interview that person and, if they are happy, offer them the job.
*Personal budgets are given to people who are eligible for long term social care support by the County Council. They have an assessment with a social care worker, where they decide how they wish to spend their money to best meet their needs.

Home & Garden Training Your Dog Is your dog so close to your legs on walks or in the park that you can’t move ? Is he wanting to run back home, or get back to the car? Is he suddenly standing still without reason ? Is he quickly looking in different directions? Is he looking behind allot? Does he suddenly hesitate then move along? Where is his tail? Is it tucked? Is it straight up pointing toward his head? Is his hair ever standing up on end? Many dogs, like humans have experiences in their lives that make them what they are , from lack of milk in the litter, a socialisation issue, or a run in with the local doggie bruiser. A fast-paced psychological work out in a safe environment with a confident owner and lots of positive cues will go a long,
18
long way in helping your dogs’ behavior problems. Be confident, be positive, be a trustworthy and reliable pack leader. A good pack leader will not lead the pack into danger. If you are not a trustworthy reliable pack leader, the dog will not follow your lead, he will think you are crazy, he will have more stress, and you will have a damaged relationship with your dog. Dogs predominately learn from positive actions rather than commands, if you are a worried timid pack leader your pack will be worried an timid. The old adage a dog is like is like it’s owner couldn’t be a more true statement. If you need help understanding your dogs traits feel to call me on 0777 2277222

Get A Will Today
et A Will Today is the largest home service Will Writing company in the UK, and I offer a personal service in the comfort of your home. Our Wills are fully legal, and drafted by a local solicitors firm with over 100 years experience. Most of the clients I see tell me that making a Will is something they have always meant do, but not got around to. I hope this will prompt you as the process is very simple and easy, and I am always available to answer any questions that my clients have. Increasingly, a Protective Will Property Trust (PWPT) is becoming our most popular product as people are concerned about the council selling their homes to pay for long term care. Thanks to advances in medicine, everyone is living longer, however they are not necessarily able to care for themselves. Figures now show that 1 in 2 women and 1 in 3 men will require long term care at some point.
20
We work hard throughout our lives to be able to leave a legacy for our loved ones. However, anyone who owns a property is unlikely to receive state help with residential care fees. At an average cost of £700 per week for care homes fees, it is clear how quickly the value of an estate can be eroded. The PWPT is just £649 which is less than the cost of a week in care. The PWPT also benefits couples who have children from different partners, as it protects the children’s inheritance in the event of remarriage. Call now for a free consultation on 0843 5024600 or e mail at bina.chauhan@ getawilltoday.net. One day in the near future, I hope that you can say, that I’ll rest a little easier because I Got a Will Today.

Re-Pot Your Pension Fund
U
nlike years gone by when many people stayed in a ‘job for life’, I am finding that many of my clients now have moved jobs several times during the course of their careers. What this means is that they often have a number of pension pots dotted around. Clients have come to me recently to talk about their pensions, and handed me information on several different workplace policies that they have paid into during their careers. When I’ve investigated, some have been in expensive policies or in poor or average performing funds – which means that large sections of their pension funds are underperforming and therefore unlikely to deliver what they need on retirement. According to a study by Metlife, the average British 50 year old has less than half of the retirement savings they need to guarantee a minimum standard of income when they no longer work. The study discovered that the average 50
22
year old has £54,300 saved in pension funds. However this needs to be more like £122,800 in order to achieve a minimum annual income standard of £14,400 per year as defined by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. So if you have several pension funds that you haven’t reviewed lately, it could be worth getting in touch with an independent financial adviser to explore whether consolidating them would get your money working harder for you. For more information on this, or any other aspect of your financial planning, contact Justin Stockdale of Sense Financial Solutions on 0115 837 8620 or email justin@itmakessense.net. Please remember that the value of the investment can go down, as well as up, and you may not get back as much as you put in.

Community Information Totally Locally
The Magic Tenner (or how to turn £10 into £50) There’s a bit of maths that says if you spend £10 in a local shop or business that sells stuff from local producers the amount of money that goes back into the Bridgford economy can be over £50. Spend £10 - Create £50? How? Well if you imagine you get a cup of coffee and a lovely piece of locally made cake from an independent cafe, a big part of your money is past onto staff, cake bakers, the butchers, decorator, electrician, accountant, etc. Who turn source their goods from local suppliers, buy lunch from local deli’s etc. With each step in a case like this around 80% of each spend often goes back into the local economy. So in effect the money that stays in West Bridgford gets more and more. Local independent businesses are far more likely to use other local firms then any of the big national giants would. It’s what makes them tick and they know the
26
true value of keeping it ‘Totally Locally’. It’s also a lot easier! The more everyone spends within our area the stronger and vibrant our economy will be, which means more jobs, better facilities and a nicer place for us all to live. This can be applied to everything from a college, to a pub, a convenience store or public sector organisations. If you compare this with buying online outside the area - where none of the money comes back into the Bridgford economy - it seems to make sense really. Summers Coming.......
nd so are the Thunderstorms. Last month I talked about looking at your computer and where it is used to try and avoid it overheating. Another issue that you should look at is power for the computer. During the summer, we quite often have thunderstorms. These can cause power spikes or power cuts. To protect yourself from power spikes, ensure that you have a surge protector power rail installed, and your computer is connected into it. Some have a protector socket to help protect your router from the phone line. Surge protection rails can be purchased from £10 upwards. Another big problem is short power cuts lasting a couple of seconds or dips in power. If you have a laptop, it will automatically cut over to its internal battery and keep on working. As long as the laptop has a surge protection rail installed, you should be ok. With a Desktop PC, this will cause the PC to crash, which, in worst case scenario,

could cause the PC not to come back on again. To help avoid this, you should think about installing a battery backup unit or Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS). The UPS will automatically cut in if the power fails. Another benefit of a UPS is that it gives out a stable power supply to your computer, which in turn, helps to keep the internal components of your computer healthy. A UPS can be purchased from £70 upwards, with the better ones having some software that will interact with your PC. If you have a backup drive, only connect it to your PC and power when you want to back the PC up. If the PC’s power supply blows, it can send a surge out through the motherboard, which in turn sending a power surge through to your backup drive. By connecting it only when you need to do a backup, you are reducing the risk of it becoming damaged.
