Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Project Pleasure

Garden View

April is a great month for a garden project; one which can be achieved in a morning or an afternoon, and which improves a few square metres. You’ll feel you’ve achieved something wonderful and if you break the whole garden into a series of small projects it suddenly appears more manageable. Here are three to get you started. Strawberry Pots

Then mow the lawn with the blades set on high and remove the clippings. Two weeks later apply a combined weed killer and fertilizer. If you’re lucky it will rain within 24 hours. If not just water it in. Mow weekly to keep the lawn thick and healthy. Seating Don’t forget an all weather seat so you can sit and contemplate all your hard work over a cup of tea or a nip of something stronger.

You don’t need a huge patch to enjoy growing strawberries. Plant a few in pots as a treat. Buy young, rich green plants which have been certified virus-free. Plant 3-4 in a 12 inch (30cm) clay pot.

Teak from renewable resources is fantastic but cast iron or aluminium is also good, though you’ll need a cushion to protect your posterior on cold days! Position it in a sunny area.

The crowns (where shoots meet roots) should be level with the compost surface.

Buy a few flowering daffodils, tulips and pansies and plant them in a pretty pot next to the bench, then sit back and enjoy.

Water them in and stand in the shelter of a house wall. If you have a greenhouse or a cold frame they will establish more quickly and fruit earlier. Pinch off any runners which form.

By Rachel Leverton

Grass Lawns always look bedraggled after the winter. Remove dead grass by raking the surface with a wire toothed rake. Improve drainage on heavy soil by spiking it with a garden fork every 6 inches (15cm) or so, to a depth of about 4 inches (10cm), giving the fork a good wiggle each time. Sweep sharp sand into the holes with a broom.

Summer is just around the corner, and with it – hopefully – the sun. It’s a time to start thinking about eye protection.

A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap offers excellent eye protection screening around 50% of all UV.

I have a theory that sunspecs are the coolest accessories ever invented. They add instant glamour to any outfit; disguise tired eyes, and offer handy hangover relief when required.

Any UV light you’re exposed to now can cause eye problems years down the line, such as macula degeneration (AMD) and cataract,

In addition, you don’t have to worry about whether they make your bum look big, and even a designer pair won’t break the bank.

Decisions, decisions! Handy hints to help you choose. All sunspecs must carry the CE mark to prove they filter 99-100% of all UV rays. Wraparound styles offer the most protection but the large sunspecs favoured by WAGs and celebrities are also good.

Yet as useful as these qualities are they pale into insignificance beside sunspecs’ real function, which is to protect our eyes. The sun’s UV rays can damage the delicate structures of the eye, such as the lens and the retina. This damage can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration in later life. UV FACTS UV penetrates clouds so even when you can’t see the sun your eyes may still be damaged unless you protect them UV is most intense between 10am and 2pm. The Reader by Bernhard Schlink

A Good Read

This year sees the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the horrors of the Holocaust came to the world’s attention. In the intervening years many great pieces of literature have been written to explore why it happened, and the consequences of it. One such book is The Reader by the German author, Bernhard Schlink. Set in West Germany in 1958, Michael, a 15-yearold falls ill with hepatitis and befriends a 36-year-old woman, Hanna. They develop a close relationship until she suddenly disappears a few months later. The narrative then skips to six years later where Michael, now a law student, is observing a war crimes trial. On trial are a group of female SS guards who served at Auschwitz. Michael has to battle his emotions and the reader is asked, along with the protagonist, to question why such atrocities were allowed to happen and how can we stop them happening again. The issue of how ordinary Germans carried out Nazi orders is one that Germans have struggled to come to terms with and Schlink explores this in a touching manner. The style of writing is sparse at times – with little explanation offered to the reader at times. It can appear blunt, but offers a clarity that forces the reader to engage with the subject matter. It reflects how the post-war generations in Germany have struggled to come to terms with the actions of ordinary Germans during the war.

12

Once by Morris Gleiztman Adult literature is not alone in dealing with the Holocaust, and there are in fact many pieces of children’s literature that aim to introduce the events and the effects of them. One such book is Once by Morris Gleiztman. It is the first is a series of four books which tell of the life of Felix, a 10 year old Polish Jew in 1942. For three years, Felix has lived in an orphanage, waiting for his parents return for him. They own a book shop and Felix believes that this is why they had to leave him. He has seen Nazis burning books and figures out that it must be dangerous to be a bookseller. His parents must have sent him to the orphanage to keep him safe. However, he soon learns that it is not being a bookseller that is dangerous. Gleiztman is very careful to write at an appropriate level for his young audience whilst not sanitising the dreadful events that Felix finds himself caught up in. The young reader will learn, along with Felix, exactly what is taking place across Europe. Yes, it is shocking, yes it is moving, and yes, be prepared for questions from a child who is reading this. It is aimed at readers in their first year or two at secondary school and offers a good age-appropriate introduction to a subject that they will most likely encounter in History or RE lessons. The Perfect Brow

Eyebrows are essentially there to protect the eyes from sweat, dust and sunlight and originally were a lot larger in size. Today they serve more of an aesthetic purpose; they are essential to frame the face and can change the appearance of facial features. By changing the eyebrows we can alter the frame of the face and make the face appear a different shape.

Perfect Proportion Basically the ideal face shape is thought to be an oval face (well balanced and softly rounded; the forehead is slightly wider than the jaw, which curves gently, and the cheekbones are high) as it tends to suit many styles of brow. However one rule to follow is never create oval shaped brows on an oval shaped face.

Shape and Size Round brows make the face look rounder and close set brows make the nose look longer, wide set brows make the nose look wider and thin brows make the face look fatter. Higher arches make the face look longer and flat brows make the face look shorter. By moving or changing a brow shape we can make the face appear longer/shorter and wider or narrower.

The current fashion is to have really quite defined brows that are also defined in colour. Eyebrow tinting or a semipermanent brow powder are both excellent to create definition, especially when applied with a stencil. Do You Need An Accountant?

s a new tax year starts, it’s time to consider whether you need an accountant.

Who do you need? Would you be better with a bookkeeper – someone to balance your chequebook, or do you really need someone capable of preparing financial documents and tax documents? What services are provided? Some accountants provide all services, others are more niche in what they offer. Ask for recommendations. Especially ask those acquaintances in a similar line of business to your own.

Consider what services each accountant offers; how readily they will respond to your needs, and how much guidance they will give you. Most will offer a free initial consultation, so it’s worth asking for this. Beware using family members or friends. T

How To Choose An Estate Agent

he housing market is on the move, albeit slowly, which may prompt you to make a move yourself! It might be a while since you were last in the business of buying or selling a home, so how do you choose the right estate agent for you? One of the best methods is personal recommendation, but you can also take a look around your local area to see which estate agents are the most active. Don’t be fooled by the number of ‘For Sale’ signs on display though. It’s the ones that say ‘Sold’ which count! Look for estate agents experienced in selling properties similar to yours; chances are they will have a good pool of prospective buyers. Once you have identified potential companies, visit their offices and pretend to be a buyer. You will soon discover how helpful the staff members are, and how keen they are to make a sale! From your potentials, make a shortlist of three and invite them to value your property, but don’t go automatically for the highest evaluation - this may simply be a ploy to attract your business. Do a bit of research yourself to give an idea of what similar properties are selling for, and check the agents’ experience and knowledge of your area.

in reduced enthusiasm. A better alternative might be to negotiate paying the full fee if the full asking price is achieved, and a sliding scale for any offers below it. It is possible to sell your home online. Currently responsible for 5% of property sales, online agents such as Emoov, House Network and Tepilo offer a basic preagreed package of services for a typical flat fee of £300-1,000, with extras available at an additional cost. Online agents are cheaper and more convenient, with call centres open during evenings and weekends, but they are short of local knowledge, don’t conduct viewings and may lack the incentive to negotiate the best selling price due to their fixed fee policy. Chances are you will need to become more personally involved in the sales process. Whichever route you choose to follow, all agents need to belong to either the Property Ombudsman or the Ombudsman Services: Property. Happy moving! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Ask what their service includes: Where will your property be advertised? Newspapers and online property websites such as Zoopla and Rightmove are fairly standard. Who will conduct the viewings? What marketing materials will be produced? Photographs, floor plans and virtual online tours are some you could expect. Will a sale board be provided? Finally, agree on a fee. Sole agents charge 1%-2% of the selling price, and multiple agents 1.5%-2.5%, but you might be able to negotiate a better rate. However, a low fee could result

Don’t Turn Your Back On It!

ardening, housework, DIY, repetitive G work, lifting, carrying, bad posture, stress etc.

Not looking after our body properly gives rise to the high incidence of musculoskeletal pain in the UK. The most common causes of pain we see at Health on Hand Mansfield are related to bad posture or are due to the repetitive stress and strains we put on our body. This is most often due to the sedentary lifestyle, repetitive movements and lack of strengthening and stretching exercises. Recent research (from 2012) has shown that as many as 8 in 10 people over the age of 35 will suffer from low back pain and that the vast majority is caused simply by the cumulative effects of lifestyle that we tend to ignore. ‘The majority of the issues we see are avoidable’ says Chiropractor Bella Sichel ‘By following some simple advice and exercises people can prevent low back pain, neck pain and other common ailments!’

Chiropractor Luca Ballabio continues: ‘We, at Health on Hand Mansfield, offer people a chance for a free chat where we can identify what the problem is most likely to be, if we can help and in many cases we will advise on how you can help the symptoms yourself!’ A few simple rules for a more pain free life: Maintain a healthy diet and weight. Remain active—under the supervision of your doctor and/or chiropractor. Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest. Warm up or stretch before AND after exercising or other physical activities, such as gardening. Maintain proper posture. Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes. Sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimise any curve in your spine. Lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting. Let Your Light Shine

Choosing a Lampshade

The first lampshades appeared in the 1600s. Initially used to direct light, they later took the role of softening and dispersing it. During Queen Victoria’s reign the aesthetics of lampshades became as important as their practicality. The iconic Tiffany lampshade was designed at the end of the19th century, by the American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. These were made of stained glass combined in elaborate patterns. The style – which is highly distinctive – remains recognisable and admired throughout the world today. Tiffany also used mosaic techniques to create picturesque shades that would not only look pleasing in themselves, but even more so when illuminated by a bulb through the stained glass. The popularity of lampshades grew hugely during the twentieth century as more people had access to electricity. They were able to afford lighting in all rooms of their houses, and wanted to create a welcoming and homely atmosphere. Today there are a wide variety of lampshade designs and they are made from many materials including glass, metal, ceramics, fabric or even paper. They are generally held together with a wire frame and are normally embellished with beautiful patterns or ornate trim. Hardback shades and soft shades are available. Hardback shades are not washable and are generally less expensive than the same shade made as a soft shade.

There are a wide variety of shapes including: Drum, Coolie, Empire and Bell, Circle, Oval and Square. Here are a few tips to help you choose your shade: Decide whether you are creating ambient, accent, task or decorative lighting, as this will help determine the style you should choose. If you need the lamp to read by or to shed ambient light, go with a translucent shade. If you’re using the lamp only as an accent light and don’t need it to illuminate the room or to shed light on a task, an opaque shade can be a good choice. When placing a table lamp, take account of the breadth of the shade: - you don’t want to crash into it every time you get in or out of bed, or pass the hall table. Consider a lampshade that will compliment the colours and style of your room, or be bold and choose something that really makes a statement. Pleated lampshades tend to look more traditional and are most appropriate in rooms furnished with antiques or that have a lot of pattern and detail. If the room is contemporary, go with a non pleated shade. If you are looking for something really special you could even go for a custom design, and for those who are creative, it is even possible to make your own. So go on…let your little light shine.
