The Internet Of Things What is it and how does it work?

The ‘internet of things’ refers to electronic devices connecting to each other using the internet. It’s a way to collect information and improve efficiency. Take as an example, a Fitbit or other fitness-tracking device. These give you an indication of how many steps you’ve walked or ran in a day, your heart rate, calories burned and so on. You can also synch one to an app on your phone, or to an online account. Then you can check your progress over a week, how you compare to other people you’re sharing information with, how many calories you’ve burnt off and so on. If you also sync your account up with ‘smart’ scales, it’ll keep track of your weight and BMI, to give you a fuller picture of your health in one place. Smart homes Smart home devices are becoming increasingly common. They let you control your heating, hot water, lights and other technology while you’re out of the house.

like someone is home. At least you know your security cameras will send an alert to your phone if they detect any movement. On the way home, you nip to the supermarket, but can’t remember whether you need milk. A couple of clicks and your smart fridge has sent you a photo of its contents. After buying the milk, you turn your heating on, and set your coffee machine to have a brew ready for when you get in. Smart health The internet of things isn’t just about making our lives a bit easier. Trials are underway to see how it could help people with preexisting medical conditions. Medical devices that patients use at home can collect data to give healthcare providers a

better picture of a patient’s day-to-day health. Doctors can even be sent an alert if measurements go above or below a safe level. Smart cities By using smart technology, and acting on data, cities could become more efficient. From bins that send an alert when they need emptying, to traffic lights that help reduce congestion, the internet of things is set to bring about a lot of changes. It may seem like sci-fi, but it might not be that long until you’re travelling in a driver-less vehicle, which knows exactly where there’s an available parking space, and any road closures to avoid on the way to your destination. The future is looking smart!

Let’s say you’re running late from work. You realise you’re going to miss your favourite TV programme, so you use your phone to set it to record. You also postpone the heating coming on, and turn a light on so it looks

Garden View This Month- Fuchsia Perfect

I love hardy fuchsias. They are some of the most rewarding plants to grow. They are easy to propagate, flower well and are not the least bit temperamental. They are named after a 16th Century German herbalist and physician called Leonard Fuchs. Lots of gardeners struggle to spell fuchsia but if you think of his name and stick and ‘ia’ on the end you have it! In mild areas or at the seaside they can grow into huge shrubs. Elsewhere hard frosts see off most of the top growth in winter, then new shoots burst up from the soil in the spring, maturing into small shrubs about 2-3 feet / 60-100cm tall. At this time of year rooted cuttings are cheap. Grow them on for a few weeks under cover, changing the pot to a slightly larger one as they grow, then plant them out in May. Choose a sunny spot in well-drained soil. Make sure you pinch out the shoot tips frequently. It delays the flowers a little but they will become bushy little plants which produce more flowers in the longrun. Once they are mature you can more or less leave them to it. Simply sprinkle a handful or two of fertiliser around them in the spring and again in the summer. There are lots of lovely

8

varieties. “Mrs. Popple” is tall with red and purple flowers. “Mrs. W. P. Wood” is paler with pearly flowers. I have a soft spot for “Whiteknight’s Pearl” which is a beautiful pale pink. If you have a smaller plot try “Tom Thumb” or “Alice Hoffman”. It’s a little known fact that the berries and inner petals of fuchsias are edible (though it’s worth noting that ‘edible’ doesn’t mean they necessarily taste good!). However there is now a variety bred especially for eating. It’s called “Berry”

and produces fruit with a flavour something like a sweet fig. The fuchsia berries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. They don’t have a long shelf life so pick them when they are soft and squishy and eat them fresh. Or you can freeze small quantities as you collect them, until you have enough to make fuchsia jam or add to muffins, much as you might add blueberries. Happy Gardening. By Rachael Leverton

St George’s Day Did you know that St George never actually set foot in Britain? It’s believed he was born in Lydda in Palestine, or in Cappadocia (now in central Turkey), and brought up in Palestine. His father was a Roman soldier, and when his parents died, George decided he would travel to Nicomedia (Turkey) to join the Roman army. He served for several years, progressing up the ranks to become an imperial guard of the Emperor. George was a devout Christian, and was tortured and executed for refusing to give up his Christian faith. It’s believed that he was killed on 23rd April 300AD, which is why St George’s Day is celebrated on April 23rd each year. So where does the dragon come into it? The legend of George and the dragon dates back hundreds of years, to the 11th century, if not earlier.

Spotlight Magazine

According to the legend, a dragon was terrorising a small village. The villagers would sacrifice their children to appease the dragon. One day George was riding past the village and met a young princess, whose turn it was to be sacrificed. George rescued the girl and offered to slay the dragon for the villagers, if they would convert to Christianity. They agreed, so he killed the dragon. Today the Feast of St George is celebrated in countries across the world, including Palestine, Syria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. If you’re taking part, perhaps you could adopt the old English custom of wearing a red rose in your lapel on St George’s Day.

Unusual Easter Traditions How Will You Celebrate Easter

If you need ideas check out these unusual traditions Pace Egg Plays were once a widespread way of celebrating across rural England. Performed on Good Friday the drama involves a form of a combat between a villain named Old Tosspot and the hero St George. Historically the actors were working class men and women who toured the villages performing in pubs and on the street as a way of earning extra money. In the plays someone is always killed, this may be St George or a Turkish Knight known as Bold Slasher. The poor fellow is however revived by a comic doctor, linking to the Easter themes of death and rebirth The use of the word Pace is linked to the Latin word Pacha which translates to Easter. The egging part comes from the fact that performers were given eggs which were wrapped in onion skins and carefully boiled.

The Pace Eggs were sometimes rolled but the practice of egg rolling has become a tradition all on its own both in the UK and abroad. Usually hard boiled eggs are decorated and rolled down a grassy hill with an ensuing competition to see whose egg can roll fastest and remain unharmed. The exact symbolism of egg rolling isn’t clear, but as eggs have links to the Easter and Spring themes of rebirth, renewal and fertility this seems to provide some reasoning for it. If you are looking for a different type of activity on Easter Monday, then you might like to consider the traditions of Whipping Monday linked to countries such as Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

In Slovakia women are doused by men with water and whipped with braided willow branches. This is said to symbolise youth and strength and make women healthy for the Spring. The men then get a reward from the lady in question which is a dyed egg, a ribbon tied around their whip and for adults an invite in for some food and vodka. Some men also receive coins. In the Czech version there is no water. Just the whipping and here the implement is called the pomlazka and the tradition ends at noon. I think I’ll stick with eggrolling! Whatever you end up doing, have a Happy Easter!

They’d receive other gifts too, including money as an incentive to perform by the crowd. Some believe the phrase ‘to egg someone on’ originates from when rival groups of performers found themselves in the same village and traded insults, had wooden sword fights or even try to steal each others Pace Eggs.

A Good Read in the current day court case. Ballantyne successfully transports us back to a cold farm in the North of England where Daniel finally finds the warmth and love he has been looking for in the shape of his foster mother, Minnie.

The Guilty One by Lisa Ballantyne It is true that the premise of this book may put some people off: eight-year-old Ben is found dead in a park and eleven-year-old Sebastian is arrested and charged with his murder. With echoes of other high profile cases it does ask us to question how our behaviour as adults can lead to horrific consequences. However, it is a very wellwritten and gripping novel. The focus of the story is Daniel, a solicitor chosen to represent Sebastian in court. Despite the child being quite difficult to warm to, Daniel sees something of himself in the boy and he begins to recall his own childhood as the son of a drug addict, who spent most of his time in foster care. Here the narrative splits and we discover his story in the mid-1980s interspersed

14

a child not to do something and they most certainly will and so this novel – the first in the series – has been a hit with readers since it was first published in 1999. With a new adaptation premiering on Netflix it seems a perfect time to return to the original story.

She immediately takes to this boy that no one else wants and an unlikely relationship develops between them.

Set in a timeless version of our world we are introduced to the Baudelaire’s: Violet, Klaus, and baby Sunny.

What becomes apparent though is that something went very wrong with the relationship and as an adult, facing the death of Minnie, and the trial of young Sebastian, Daniel is forced to confront his own childhood whilst we are left wondering who the guilty one really is.

Their life is turned upside down when their parents die in a house fire and they are sent to live with Count Olaf, a mysterious man who lives in a crumbling mansion and owns a theatre troupe.

The Bad Beginning: A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket There are some children’s books that invite you in. Literature has long been used to escape from the real world and children’s literature is no exception.

You know from the beginning that this will not end well and are told “if you enjoy books with happy endings then you are best of reading another book.” You have been warned! By Willow Coby

Whether it is an escape to a magical boarding school where you realise you are someone special, or a fantastical journey down a rabbit hole, you can expect to be welcomed into the new world for the next 200 or so pages. Not so here. There is a very clear warning that you do not want to learn of the terrible events that will occur to the three Baudelaire children. But tell

Savings Accounts Explained The Most Popular Options

Whether you’re saving for a holiday or a rainy day, there are lots of ways you can earn interest on your money The most popular options include: Cash ISAs Cash ISAs let you save up to £20,000 a year tax free. Fixed-rates ISAs tend to earn you more interest than easy-access ones, but you will have to pay a penalty if you withdraw money early. The new Lifetime ISA is for people under 40 who are saving for their pension, or for a first house. You can save up to £4,000 a year and the government will top it up by 25%. Bank accounts Some bank accounts are currently offering higher rates of interest than savings accounts. At the time of writing this article, Nationwide was offering 5% interest on balances up to £2,500, for the first year, for people paying in at least £1,000 every month. However, to use a bank account to save money in, you might want to open a separate account. That way your savings won’t disappear on paying the bills. Keep an eye open for offers.

16

Lots of banks will offer you a bonus for opening an account, but you might have to pay in a minimum amount each month.

money straight away if you need it.

Savings accounts Savings accounts aren’t paying huge levels of interest at the moment, but they are still worth a look.

Whether you want a guaranteed return or are prepared to take a risk in the hopes of making more money.

Regular savings accounts, where you put a fixed sum away each month, usually pay a little more. And ones where you lock your money away for a set time pay more again.

Whether you want to save regular amounts each month, or lump sums.

The interest rate is still pretty low in most cases though, so you might want to consider other options first. It’s not just about the AER AER stands for Annual Equivalent Rate. It shows you the percentage of interest you’d earn if you left your money in an account for a year. While the AER is certainly an important deciding factor, it’s not the only thing you’ll want to consider.

How long you’re planning to save for.

How you want your money to be invested. Whether the organisation aligns with your values (e.g. will it invest your money in animal testing, or green energy projects)? How good the customer service is. www.moneysavingexpert. com is a good place to visit to find out the latest ‘best-buys’. It also gives information about customer satisfaction rates.

Shakespeare Day lead a procession which includes bands, other civic leaders, school children and actors. This will culminate with the Mayor putting flowers on Shakespeare’s grave. There will be activities for the whole weekend 22-23 April in celebration.

Shakespeare Day will be celebrated on 23rd April. The date is linked to the date he died; as no one knows when Shakespeare was born because there is no record. It is known however that he was baptized on 26 April 1564 and died on 23 April 1616. Those celebrating may choose to attend the festivities held in Stratford Upon Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace. This is where Shakespeare, who was one of eight children, spent much of his early life and where he married Anne Hathaway who bore him three children. He is also thought to have retired to Stratford in 1613. The bells of Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare attended as a child will be rung and the Mayor will

The Globe theatre in London is associated with the time Shakespeare spent in the Capital as a playwright, actor and poet and houses an exhibition in honour of him. In Warwickshire’s Stratford, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre brings to life his work which includes 38 dramas and 154 sonnets. Here you can also visit buildings, houses and museums associated with the ‘Bard.’ It’s a great destination for Spring break.

Hair Today....

T

he desire to remove excess or dark hair usually begins in adolescence, and many women and men remain intent upon having smooth, hairless skin. Whether it is hair on the face, armpits, legs, back, bikini line, or other body parts, there are many options available to remove unwanted hair, but few to get rid of it permanently. The old standby shaving is the quickest but most temporary form of hair removal. Shaving cuts off hair at the surface and new growth may appear thicker and darker because the new hair shaft has a blunt tip instead of a tapered one. Before shaving, apply a moisturiser such as water, shaving cream, soap or hair conditioner to help the razor glide more easily. Plucking pulls the hair out of its follicle and when done repeatedly may damage it, thus preventing further growth. Plucking is painful, so only suitable for small areas such as the eyebrows or odd facial hair. Variations are: threading, a traditional Indian method of plucking hair by twisting strings (good for eyebrows), and epilators, equipment which plucks out hairs en masse – good for larger areas such as legs and arms. Depilatory creams use a chemical called thioglycolate mixed with sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide to dissolve hair. Cream is applied for between 3 and15 minutes and the resulting jelly-like substance is then wiped or washed off.

22

www.spotlight-

Depilatory creams can burn if left on for too long and may also cause an allergic reaction. Waxing is great for treating areas both large and small. Wax is warmed and spread in the direction of the hair growth and when cool is pulled off quickly in the opposite direction, pulling the hairs out of the follicle. Waxing can be done at home or in the salon, but care should be taken not to get burnt. It can also be messy and painful. Electrolysis is one of the permanent methods of hair removal and should be done professionally. A fine needle is inserted into each individual hair follicle and an electric current applied to burn the hair root, preventing it from producing more hair. Each session may take only 20-30 minutes, but a full course of treatment could take 12-18 months. Laser hair removal is not permanent but does have long-lasting results. It requires multiple treatments, and works by laser beams or light pulses destroying the hair root and retarding the re-growth of new hair. It can be expensive and painful and works best for light skinned people with dark hair. Home kits are available for purchase. You should choose a method or combination of methods that works best for you depending on cost, time available, skin type, and the desired hair-free area. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Uke Can Do It Too! It’s Fun And Easy To Learn

“A ukulele is not a guitar with training wheels! “ ‘Uke’ can do it too! I began to learn the ukulele properly about a year ago. I acquired a cheap instrument for Christmas one year, learned a few chords from You Tube, strummed a few songs, lost interest and carried on with my life consigning my ‘toy’ to a shelf. Then one day while surfing the web I came across a video of a guy named Jake Shimabukuro. Google him playing Bohemian Rhapsody and prepare to be amazed. I was completely taken aback by his musicianship. My ‘toy’ was not a toy after all…it was a proper musical instrument, capable of making an awesome sound. I took it off the shelf and looked at it with new respect. Suddenly I wanted to learn to play like Jake! I began a search for a ukulele teacher and found a classical guitar teacher who also taught ukulele. I was hooked from my first lesson. At first people would laugh when they visited us and saw my ukulele. They made references to George Formby and Tiny Tim. So I would play them a little bit of Spanish Flamenco (known as Flamencolele when played on a uke) or an Etude, and their mockery turned to surprise and delight.

My children learn violin and piano and were studying for their grade five exams. I wondered if I could do something similar on the ukulele. I took my Grade three exam at the beginning of this year and passed with a distinction. I’ve moved on from my first cheap ukulele and bought a beautiful Tanglewood concert uke on the advice of my teacher. I’m still a long way off playing like Jake Shimabukoro but I’m improving every week and having so much fun on the journey. Here are some things I’ve learned along the way: It’s easy to play the ukulele…badly! The ukulele is certainly a simple instrument to pick up and get going on but like the recorder it suffers from being bought as a cheap toy for children. Also, all instruments will sound a bit ropey at the start of your musical journey, though the ukulele much less so than a recorder I have to say!

experience schools tend to be very bad at imparting a life long love of anything. I’m sure if I’d been forced to play ukulele at school that I might not have picked it up as an adult. After all, if schools inculcated a life long love of a musical instrument, surely everyone in the UK would play the recorder! People assume I am learning the ukulele as a stepping stone to learning the guitar. This is not the case. Noone thinks a violin is not a training instrument for the cello! It might look like a small guitar but it is a separate instrument with its own characteristics, sound, and musical repertoire. What sounds great on a violin may not work on a cello, and the same goes for ukulele and guitar. A ukulele is not a guitar with training wheels! Though if playing one inspires you to learn the other I say go for it!

To play any instrument well takes time and practice, but the payoff is worth the effort. Many schools are teaching ukulele now, which is both wonderful, and alarming. In my

The Grand National

Do You Like A Flutter? The Grand National is one of those institutions, like the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, or the final of Strictly Come Dancing, where even those who never set foot in a betting shop open their wallet and enter the office sweepstake. But did you know that in April 3rd 1993, the world-famous horse race was reduced to a shambles? A disastrous sequence of events began just before the race was due to start when protestors ran onto the track near the first fence. They were removed and the race officials asked horses and riders to line up again. Then there were two false starts caused by horses becoming tangled with

the starting tape. On the second false start, although the red recall flag was waved it didn’t unfurl, and 30 of the 39 riders raced away. Members of the crowd and officials all tried to recall the jockeys but without success. 11 riders completed the first circuit before they pulled up, and seven riders never realised anything was wrong. They completed the gruelling course and raced to the finish line. Esha Ness, a 50-1 outsider trained by Jenny Pitman and ridden by John White, crossed the line first but the race was declared void, depriving the horse’s owner, Patrick Bancroft, of the £76000 prize money. However she went on to win again two years later, with Royal Athlete.

This service is available to Gold and Double Gold members who are either (i) an owner-occupier; or (ii) a tenant aged over 30 where we have installed a smart meter in their property. All the light bulbs in the member’s home will be changed provided we have an LED equivalent, and the existing bulbs are safely and easily accessible. The typical value of £300-£500 is based on 39 LED bulbs at an average retail price of £8 plus a £100 charge for fitting. All light bulbs supplied and fitted by us are covered by a 36 month warranty. In addition, if a member notifies us at any time thereafter that a light bulb we have fitted is defective or has reached the end of its useful life, we will post them a replacement light bulb free of charge provided that (i) we have been supplying all their communication services continuously between the date the LED light bulbs were originally installed and the date we are notified that a replacement LED light bulb is required; (ii) their electricity service is being provided by us on the date the replacement is requested; (iii) there are no monies outstanding on the member’s account with us; and (iv) we have not received a termination notice from the member on any of the services we are supplying to them at that time. 15% quoted saving based on a typical household using 3,100 kWh of electricity, where 39 traditional light bulbs are changed to LEDs, with an average reduction of 45W per light bulb (eg. from 50W to 5W) and where each LED light bulb is used for an average of 45 minutes per day. If we fit new LED light bulbs in a member’s home and they cease to take any landline, broadband or mobile service from us within the following four years (which they were taking at any time after they requested our free light bulb replacement service), they will need to pay a contribution towards the cost of the LED bulbs we provided; the size of this contribution varies between £2 - £8 per bulb, depending on how long their bulbs have been installed. This offer can be withdrawn at any time. For full terms and conditions refer to the Utility Warehouse website.
