Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

That Summer in Ischia by Penny Fenny

A Good Read

Ischia: an Italian island in the bay of Naples. When Liddy receives a phone call from her best friend, Helena,. A call inviting her to spend the summer there as an au pair to a wealthy family, she can hardly resist. Helena assures her that the children will be no bother and they can spend two months sunbathing on the beach. Only it doesn’t turn out that way. When one of their young charges goes missing they immediately fall under suspicion and after that summer they never see each other again. Twenty-five years later Liddy, back in England, is walking her dog on the beach when she sees a young woman who looks like Helena. But it can’t be. It turns out to be Allie, her old best friend’s 23-year-old daughter. As she befriends her the mysteries surrounding the events of that summer in Ischia start to unravel. Her mother never talked much about that summer so Allie travels to Ischia to find out for herself. The action switches between location and time periods as Fenny unveils the events that changed so many lives. Her descriptions of Ischia ar e truly magical, evoking a carefree exotic lifestyle, and contrast with the clear descriptions of the author’s native Liverpool. A great read.

Which Witch? By Eva Ibbotson Eva Ibbotson is an award winning children’s author, but her novels are not as well known by adults. Born in Austria she fled to England under the Nazi regime and this has had an impact on some of her novels, many of which use Austria as a backdrop. However, Which Witch? is clearly rooted in the English countryside and is a fantastical novel for readers aged 9-11.

As the story begins we learn of the darkest wizard in the country. Arriman the Awful lives near the village of Todcaster and spends his days performing dark magic. However, over the years he has grown tired of this and is delighted to receive a prophecy that a much darker wizard will appear and take over his role. When no one appears he decides that there is only one thing for it: he must take a wife and have a child who will take over from him. So he calls together the seven witches of Todcaster and holds a contest to find the darkest witch. And what a bunch of women they are! Here Ibbotson’s writing has a touch of Roald Dahl as she describes the horrible nature of them. All except one, Belladonna. The only problem is that Belladonna is a white witch who is only able to do good magic and Arriman is looking for a dark witch. With a bit of help from an earthworm, Belladonna sets out to win, but ends up proving that good magic can triumph as the true heir appears.

Britain’s Waterways

There are more than 2,000 miles of waterways around Britain, so why not make the most of them?

as an ideal route for beginners. You’ll pass through several villages on route, so may even be able to stop off for a quick cuppa.

Take a stroll: From a relaxing amble after Sunday lunch, to a full day’s hike, our waterways offer numerous opportunities for walking. There are many circular routes you can take and the toll-paths are car-free.

You need a license to paddle on many of Britain’s waterways, which can be bought from the Canal and River Trust: www. canalrivertrust.org.uk

The Newton Poppleford & River Otter walk in Devon, for example, is a beautiful walk along the river, stopping off in the picturesque village of Tipton St John. Find a route near you at www.ifootpath.com. Cycle: Many of the canal paths are ideal for cycling. Pick up an Ordnance Survey map, or plan your route with www.sustrans. org.uk. The Trans Pennine Trail is a good option, with more than 60% of the route being traffic-free and fairly flat. Enjoy a leisurely boat ride: Whether you hire a narrow boat for a day, or a week, boating is clearly one of the best ways to enjoy Britain’s waterways. Visit www. waterways.org.uk for advice and tips. There are more than 100 boat hire firms, with many of the larger ones offering the option to pick up and drop off at different locations. You don’t need any previous experience, as most firms will give you a short training course before you set off.

Feeling adventurous? We might think of white water rafting as something to do on holiday, but there are a few British centres. The National White Water Centre, for example, runs sessions on the Welsh mountain river Afon Tryweryn, with prices starting from just £35 for a taster lesson. Cast off: A leisurely day’s fishing can be a great way to unwind. You will need to purchase a rod fishing license from the Post Office before you cast off. An annual license starts at £27, though you can also buy licenses for shorter periods of time from just £3.75. Fishing rights are often owned by a local fishing club, but a Waterway Wanderers permit (£20 a year) gives you access to most stretches. For more information about Britain’s waterways, visit canalrivertrust.org.uk. By Kate Duggan

Try canoeing: Almost 2 million people go canoeing in Britain. It’s a great way to keep fit while exploring the countryside. Check out www. canoe-england.org.uk for inspiration. Trails are colour coded from easy to challenging, so you can pick a route to suit your ability. Purton to Sharpness on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, for example, is classed

Comic Con

Nearly 50 years ago, a few hundred comic book enthusiasts met in a small hotel in San Diego to talk shop and swap books. It was the world’s first comic convention and now Comic Con has ballooned into a huge multimedia event that includes television, film, video games, collectibles, cosplayers and much more!

What is Cosplay? This is the most important part of the experience for a lot of people. They dress up as their favourite characters. Some of them spend a lot of time, money and effort to get their costume just right. It’s a really big deal. Prizes are handed out for the best dressed.

But what exactly is it? I’m no expert but my friend Mark is. Here’s his take on it.

What has been your highlight so far? Getting to see the original Batmobile for sure! Where else would I get the chance to do that? Amazing!

What is Comic Con? It’s a show, maybe a bit like the Ideal Home Exhibition, usually held over three days at a weekend, where fans of comics, sci-fi, fantasy, video games and the like go to indulge their passion for all things geeky. Where does it take place? There are events all over the world including several in the UK. The biggest British one is in London. What happens there? There are lots of stands where you can buy cool stuff like T-shirts, hats, action figures and memorabilia. You also get the chance to meet your heroes and get their autographs.

What are your dreams for the future? I’d love to go to San Diego one day. That’s the Glastonbury of Comic Con! It’s massive and you get Hollywood studios attending to showcase film premiers, plus the chance to meet many more stars than you would over here. Ten years ago, the only people you would find at a place like Comic Con were hard core enthusiasts, but the comic-themed renaissance of the past decade has helped turn Comic Con into one of the most important annual events for fans of superheroic films. If you’re a fan of geeky films, you’re a fan of Comic Con!

You might see previews of new film releases and you can also take part in workshops on things like acting, writing or drawing. There are also video and board game tournaments. Why do you go? It feels great to be with and around people who love the same things as me. It’s a chance to show my appreciation and love for fandom - the things I’m really into! There’s still a bit of a stigma to being a geek, but there I can just relax and be myself.

Wasps!

10 things you might not know about wasps

The very word tends to cause an involuntary shudder in most people. Unlike bees, you won’t see any charities asking you to do your bit to save them. Most species don’t pollinate plants and many of us have been stung by a wasp at one point, so it’s easy to dismiss them as just a pointless nuisance. And yet, dig a little deeper and they’re actually quite fascinating creatures. There are thousands of different species of wasps, from the Common Wasp that targets our summer picnics, to the more unusual Ruby-Tailed Wasp. The Asian Giant Hornet can reach 5cm in length. (Imagine one of those attacking your jam sandwich.) While some live in colonies, just like bees, other species are solitary, and rather antisocial. They’re predatory. The adult female of some species will actually lay its eggs on the larvae of another insect, or inside an adult insect. Once hatched, the wasp larvae will eat its host. The adult wasp captures and paralyses insects to feed to its growing larvae. While the above sounds rather unpleasant, it does have its advantages for humans, as wasps can help to control many of the insects that plague our crops.

Social wasps make their nests by chewing up bits of wood and making a substance with it that’s very similar to paper. Up to 10,000 wasps can live in one nest. An old wasp nest won’t be used by a new queen, so they’re usually only inhabited for one year. Fascinating though they may be, most of us would still rather not have a wasp nest in our house or garden. You can get insecticides to try to kill the wasps yourself, but it’s rather more sensible to call in the experts. Try your local council first, as many provide pest control services. If yours doesn’t, search online or in the Yellow Pages for pest control companies. If you’d rather not kill the wasps, there are humane ways to move the nest or encourage them to vacate it, but they’re not fool proof and you will need to take precautions to avoid getting stung. Before doing anything, do make sure that they’re wasps, rather than bees. A bee colony is usually safe to leave where it is, but if you want it moved, your local beekeeping association should be able to help. By Kate Duggan

Some farmers actively encourage wasps for this reason. In Brazil, for example, sugarcane farmers buy parasitic wasps in order to kill a particular moth known as the Sugarcane Borer. While we think of wasps as yellow and black, they do come in other colours, including red, blue and green, and pure black.

Garden View

We all love flowers. They’re what gardening is all about and the fact that they tend to be relatively short-lived makes them special. But a garden can’t survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own.

Many non-evergreen plants have beautiful showy foliage between April and November and we’d be mad not to take full advantage of it. Rodgersia pinnata is an excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze, leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer. It likes soil which doesn’t dry out. A pebble mulch works brilliantly because it complements the plant. Hostas have truly beautiful leaves but I’ve tried and failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of super-slugs who seem able eat hostas faster than I can plant them!

extended period of sub-zero temperatures one winter. I keep meaning to try again. When I do I will but the much hardier green variety...just in case. Many people forget grasses when they think about foliage but there are some wonderfully attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis “Zebrinus”. The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February. Finally, if you have the space, for real in-your-face foliage try the golden-leaved Catalpa bignonioides “Aurea”. Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around kneeheight each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. It will reward you with leaves as big as Frisbees! Now that’s really funky foliage. By Rachel Leverton

I’ve had some success with the variety “Frances Williams” which is less prone to attack though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Hostas like a moist soil so if yours is on the dry side work in plenty of compost or manure at planting time and mulch well...preferably with something sharp to act as a deterrent to the slimy brigade. I have had tremendous success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrichplume fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning lime-green foliage unfold each spring. A few years ago I had a wonderful purple New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax. Its bold, dramatic fountains of spiky foliage made it a firm favourite. Unfortunately it succumbed to an

Learn to learn – Many young people struggle with the faster-pace of study and also the fact that learning is now their own responsibility. Read Andy Northedge’s The Good Study Guide before term starts. It aims to help you learn how to sort, process and recall new information. There are separate guides for the arts and sciences. It’s good to talk - If problems occur, talk to your lecturer or tutor directly as soon as the problem arises. Don’t wait until the day before an assignment is due! Take the initiative – Make the most of tutorials. Go in armed with any questions and thoughts you might have. The more you put into university study, the more you’ll get out of it.

Acknowledge disabilities - If you have a disability or specific learning difficulty like dyslexia, make yourself known to the Student Learning Service. They offer support and run advice sessions. Acclimatise – If you’re moving a fair distance from home try to spend a weekend in your new area during the summer. Familiarise yourself with the transport system and the local amenities so it won’t seem as strange when term starts. Money, money, money – Think about how you’ll manage. Talk to your parents or a trusted adult about independent living. Older people have been through similar situations even if they didn’t attend university themselves. Make new friends - Attend ‘welcome’ events and sign up for a few clubs. But don’t over-commit yourself in these early days because you’ll have a lot to deal with. In summary - Get organised, work hard and don’t forget to enjoy yourself. You’ve earned it.

Heat, Hats and Hydration

Have you ever had a holiday ruined because of over-exposure to the sun? I have. It was 2007 and I was in Mauritius. I’d been snorkelling, fascinated by the marine life I was observing, oblivious to the sun beating down on me. Once on dry land, my back started to blister and I developed oozing sores that needed medical treatment.

Sun-starved as we are in this beautiful, verdant land of ours, it is easy to overdo it in the brilliant white sunshine of foreign holiday destinations, and sun burn is just one condition we may suffer from. Prevention is always better than cure, so here are a couple of tips to keep your

holiday happy and carefree!

First, try and limit exposure to the sun during the hottest hours (around 12pm3pm) and apply sun screen liberally 30 minutes before going out. Dress in T shirts instead of strappy vests and wear a cap or hat. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and be sure to carry bottles of water with you when outside. To avoid dehydration, the body needs to take in more fluids than it expels. A fall in water and salt levels can result in nausea, faintness and heavy sweating. So, have fun in the sun this summer but don’t come back over cooked!

Paddling Pool Safety

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon and Lindsay was visiting her parents with her two children. As she fed 3 month old Eliza, mum and dad busied themselves preparing dinner. No one noticed that 18 month old Aaron was missing. When they did, they found him lying face down in the garden pond.

covered with a substantial grille to prevent youngsters from falling in. Second, when the paddling pool is out, do not leave it unattended, and assign someone responsible to watch over it. Third, place armbands or similar flotation devices on your little ones.

Drowning is the second highest cause of accidental death in children under five in England, and most drownings of 2-3 year olds happen in the home or garden. Just 5cms of water and 3 minutes is all it need take. These are sobering facts, not designed to ruin happy family occasions, but intended instead to warn of potential dangers. A few simple precautions can ensure that toddlers and children remain safe. First, if you have a pond, make sure it is

should it rain).

Fourth, once the party is over, empty the pool immediately and turn it over (so that it can’t fill up

The story of Aaron’s drowning is true. Fortunately it had a happy ending. His granddad gave him CPR and now Aaron, my stepson, is married with children of his own. But the outcome could have been so different. Avoid a possible tragedy in your family by following the simple advice above.

Quiche Lorraine

Preparation time: 30-40 mins including chill time.

While the pastry is chilling preheat oven to 220C / gas 7.

Cooking time: 25-30 minutes

Prick the pastry case all over with a fork then line it with greaseproof paper. Use baking beans or lentils to weight it down. Bake for ten minutes. Remove the greaseproof paper and bake for another 5-10 minutes until pale golden brown.

Ingredients 4 eggs 175g / 6oz streaky bacon 1 onion (finely chopped) 125g / 4.5oz hard cheese (Gruyere is nice but cheddar is fine) 250ml / 9fl oz single cream Salt and pepper

Reduce the oven temperature to 180C. Chop the bacon into small pieces and fry in a pan until crisp and golden.

Pastry 175g / 6oz plain flour 85g / 3oz hard block butter (chilled) Pinch salt 2-3 tbsp water

Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and pop it into the pastry case. Then fry the onion in the bacon fat until that too is golden and add it to the pastry case. Top with the grated cheese.

Method Make the pastry: put the flour into a bowl, rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs, then add the salt and enough water to make a firm dough.

Beat the eggs, cream, salt and pepper together lightly, then pour into the pastry case.

Roll it out and line a 20cm / 8 inch loosebottomed flan tin. Chill in the fridge for 20 minutes

24

Bake for 25-30 minutes until just set. Take care not to overcook the quiche or it will develop a rubbery texture, full of little holes.

Summer Wine

The popularity of rosé wine is increasing. Barely heard of twenty years ago, a Nielsen report in 2015 said that rosé sales were growing ten times faster than overall table wine sales. Rosé wine can be created in a variety of ways. The most common is maceration: where red grape skins rest in the juice for a shorter period of time than if red wine was being created.

Rosés can vary from dry to sweet. All of the mainstream brands have Rosé versions. For something special, seek out award winners like; Lindauer Special Reserve NV New Zealand, Château Salettes, Bandol 2014, Barefoot White Zinfandel or Gusbourne of Kent’s 2011 Brut Rosé

The winemaker removes the skins when the perfect colour is reached. The second is the ‘bled’ method. Here, juice is bled off during the first few hours of making a red wine and placed in a new vat to make rosé. Very rarely and usually only when creating sparkling wines a blending method is used where red wine is added to a vat of white wine. The primary flavours of rosé wine are red fruit, flowers, citrus, and melon with a green crunchy flavour in the finish similar to rhubarb or celery. The exact flavour depends on the types of grapes used.
