Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Quadcopters

Quadcopters, or drones as they’re also called, are similar to remote controlled helicopters, but have four rotary blades. They’re a lot of fun to fly, but there’s more to quadcopters than just a zoom around the park.

Many of them come with inbuilt video cameras, or the ability to attach a camera, so you can film a bird’s eye view of the area they’re flying over. With a quadcopter, you could take aerial shots of your village, check out places that are inaccessible by road or foot, and capture some of the beauty of gliding over a lake or fields. Quadcopters can also be used for practical purposes, such as checking whether there are any loose tiles on your roof. You will want to be careful where you fly your quadcopter; as your neighbours likely won’t appreciate you taking shots of them sunbathing in their garden.

and up and down walls, as well as in the air. The wheels also protect the blades when it crashes (which it will). You control it using your smartphone and it’ll do tricks such as 360° flips. I’ve never had much luck flying remote control helicopters, but find this one surprisingly responsive for the price. Outdoors you can get speeds of up to 11mph and a height of 20 metres. It is very small and light, so the camera isn’t the best, and you’ll want a spare battery as each charge only lasts a few minutes, but all in all it’s a good entry model. Even if you just buy a small, cheaper quadcopter for personal use only, there are some restrictions on flying it, so do visit www.quadcopters.co.uk for more information.

Some quadcopters are primarily designed for outdoor use, some indoor, and some are multi-purpose. They start at around £30, but you do get what you pay for. The camera quality on the cheaper models is pretty poor. They’re also usually smaller, harder to fly and have a lower range, so can’t go as high or far. A high-end quadcopter with a professional high definition video camera can set you back more than £3,000. Drone racing is becoming increasingly popular, with events held around the UK, and you can buy kits to make and customise your own quadcopter. If you’re looking to use a quadcopter for commercial purposes, you will need to register it with the Civil Aviation Authority, and undertake a training course to get a Permission for Aerial Work. You’ll also likely need to get public liability insurance. If you just want one for fun, the Parrot MiniDrone Rolling Spider is a good beginner’s model. Priced at around £50, it has large detachable wheels, so you can manoeuvre it along the ceiling

An Independent Nation

America is centre stage at the moment with the imminent presidential elections. The U.S. prides itself on its independence, but what is Independence Day really about?

In the eighteenth century, America was a series of thirteen colonies governed from Britain. Initially the relationship between the two countries was strong but gradually the colonists became irritated by their lowly status. Simple decisions which affected their daily lives took months to implement because they had to be passed through Parliament in England. During Britain’s war with France it paid less attention to the American colonies and they became more self reliant setting up their own de facto government systems. When Britain noticed this burgeoning independence it decided to impose greater control again: the agriculture, trade and purchases of goods were too important to lose. At the same time Britain resented the costs of protecting the colonies and decided these should be funded through taxation. The Stamp Act, passed in 1765 meant certain imported items were taxed. These were marked with an official stamp. In protest merchants banded together and refused to buy goods from Britain. The act was cancelled in early 1766. But the British Government under King George III still held the power and in 1767 Charles Townshend, the chancellor of the exchequer imposed new taxes on tea, paint, lead, paper and glass. He also passed the Quartering Act whereby British soldiers were to be quartered in the homes of the civilian population. Once again the colonists boycotted British goods in protest. The rebellion centred on Boston so the British Government sent troops there to keep order. On March 5th 1770 British soldiers fired on a mob. Several men were killed in what became known as the Boston Massacre. The soldiers involved were arrested but there remained a very anti-

8

British feeling among the colonies. On the same day as the Boston Massacre most of the Townshend acts were abolished. But Britain had a point to prove so left the Tea Act in place. This infuriated the colonists. They turned away all tea clippers from their harbours. Then on December 16th 1773 a group of colonists dressed as Indians boarded a ship and threw the cargo of tea into the sea. This became known as the Boston Tea Party. When the British Government heard what had happened ministers were incensed. Britain closed Boston Port and put Massachusetts under military rule. Anger in the colonies spilled over. In 1774 the First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and drafted the Declaration of Rights and Grievances. There were attempts at conciliation but when armed colonial militia inflicted a defeat on the British army at Lexington and Concord the American War of Independence was under way. The war officially began in 1775 and ended with the peace treaty of 1783. It transformed the original thirteen British Colonies into the United States of America. America officially split from Britain on 4th July 1776 with the signing of The Declaration of Independence.

Homemade Ice Lollies

Do you share the same childhood memories of summertime as me? When it got hot, did you take out the ice cube tray, fill it with diluted cordial and eagerly wait for it to set so that you could enjoy impromptu homemade ice lollies?

And were you usually disappointed when you came face to face with crunchy, crystallised cubes of weakly flavoured water rather than the delicious, mouthwatering, thirst-quenching, temperature -cooling creations you were expecting?! Legend has it that the ice lolly was invented in 1905 by an 11 year old American boy named Frank Epperson, who accidentally left a glass of soda with a mixing stick poking out of it on his porch overnight.

4. To make sure the sticks stand upright, freeze for about an hour and then insert the sticks. Alternatively, cover the top of the moulds with foil, make a slit and insert the sticks through it. 5. Freezing quickly reduces the amount of ice crystals. Turn the freezer to the coldest setting and place the moulds at the back. Lollies on average take around 4-5 hours to freeze but set faster, the higher the water to sugar ratio. Alcohol slows the process, with too much alcohol resulting in a slushy lolly! 6. To un-mould, immerse in hot water for 20-30 seconds. Dip just below the top rim and pull hard on the sticks to yank the lollies out.

The next day, he found he had made a delicious frozen treat. Regardless of their origin, homemade ice lollies offer endless possibilities.

7. Store frozen lollies in sealable freezer bags or waxed paper. Make sure they are airtight to prevent ice crystals from forming inside.

Orange and lemon, minted milk, strawberries and cream, pineapple and coconut, grapefruit and campari or vodka and tonic are just some of the flavours you could try.

8. For super quick lollies, simply freeze pieces of fruit. Cover bananas in peanut butter or chocolate spread before freezing or blend fruit puree with plain yoghurt. Frozen Angel Delight tastes just like mini milks!

To avoid the disappointing results I experienced, here are a few tips to ensure success at the freezer. 1. Make the mixture too strong. Cold numbs the taste buds, so add extra lemon juice, balsamic vinegar or even chilli to give the lolly oomph! 2. Sugar improves the taste and softens the texture. Too little will result in a solid block of flavoured ice; too much will result in a lolly that is partially liquid. Healthier alternatives to sugar include date syrup, honey and coconut sugar. 3. When filling the mould, leave about 5mm at the top to allow the mixture to expand.

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

A Good Read

The Raven Queen by Pauline Francis

Published in 2004, Niffenegger’s debut work has become an international bestseller. In 1991 20-year-old Claire is an artist who makes paper sculptures for a living. She bumps into 28-year-old Henry, a librarian at the local library. He has never met her before, but Claire has known him all her life; for Henry is not an ordinary man.

The death of Edward VI at the tender age of 15 saw the throne pass to a Lady Jane Grey, just 16 years old. Jane usurped Edward’s sisters Mary and Elizabeth, but she was merely a pawn in a political game of power.

He was born with a genetic disorder which causes him to time travel. He has no control over it, and cannot predict how long he will stay in one time. He jumps around his own timeline and experiences events in his own history.

Published by Usborne books, Francis’ novel takes the real-life Jane and creates a semifictional account of her short life. Jane is a young girl in love with Ned, a Catholic woodsman: a secret and forbidden love. Trapped by her upper-class life, she sees freedom and an escape in Ned.

So, on this day in 1991 when he and Claire meet, she becomes a part of his experiences and therefore his timeline. He begins to travel within her life and their ‘first’ encounter is when Claire is just 6 years old. Over his many ‘visits’ as she grows into adulthood they form a close relationship and eventually fall in love. Written in the first person this novel alternates between Henry and Claire. We follow Claire’s timeline chronologically, with a note at the start of each chapter reminding us how old they each are at that point. Henry’s age does of course jump around. Niffenegger wanted to create the perfect soulmate. If that is what Henry is then it explains why Claire spends her life waiting for him to appear in hers. It raises the question of whether a brief moment of pure happiness is worth the pain when that moment is over.

12

A few days later it was declared that Mary was in fact the rightful queen and Jane was accused of treason. Just nine days after her accession to the throne she was beheaded at the Tower of London. In this novel aimed at young adult readers we learn what Lady Jane Grey’s life might have been like.

This is just one example of the clever way that Francis weaves the historical factual (Jane) with the fictional (Ned) to provide an insight into this turbulent era of British history. It provides a nice reminder to the young reader that the British monarchy was always the mostly peaceful institution it is today. It is of course first and foremost a fictional novel so there are historical inaccuracies. However, the Tudor period is brought to life in a clever and memorable way. And Jane becomes more than just a footnote in a history book. By Willow Coby

Into The Wild

Get back to nature with a weekend survival course!

If you’re looking to unleash your inner Bear Grylls, or just get back to nature, a survival course may be the answer. You could throw yourself in at the deep-end by jetting off to the wilds of Zimbabwe, or the hot sands of the Sahara. Or you could ease yourself in gently, with a weekend survival course right here in the UK. Weekend activities differ depending on the course you choose, but you’ll likely end up learning to build a fire, find food and create a shelter. You could also find yourself mastering other skills, such as making traps and snares, preparing game, or wood carving. The Survival Schools in Devon and Staffordshire offer a choice of several weekend courses. You could craft traditional weapons and tools, including bows and arrows, or find out how to track animals in the wild, for example. If you fancy getting back to nature with the family, you could try the Family Bushcraft & Canoe Overnighter at The World of Bushcraft Centre in Bedford. Suitable for age eight and over, the experience includes learning to paddle a canoe down the gently flowing River Ouse. You’ll set up camp in the woods for the evening (using a canvas bell tent), learn how to light a fire with a bow drill, and make a fixed blade knife, amongst other activities.

Wildwood Bushcraft runs survival weekends in Scotland and Surrey, with activities such as fire lighting, foraging and building shelters. If you love wandering through the woods, but don’t fancy sleeping in them, some centres also offer half day activities, which don’t involve camping out. You could learn to forage for wild food with Woodland Ways for example, learning about different types of edible plants and fungi, and how to gather and cook them. Most survival courses don’t need you to bring any specialist equipment, but some are self-catering and you will need suitable clothing and a few essentials, such as a sleeping bag, reusable water bottle and torch. You should receive a list of any kit that’s required when you book, but if not, do ask. Your team members may not be too happy if you forget your toothbrush… There are several survival centres around the UK, including: Survival School: www.survivalschool.co.uk Woodland Ways: www.woodland-ways.co.uk Ray Mears Bushcraft: www.raymears.com Wildwood Bushcraft: www.wildwoodbushcraft.com

Ray Mears Bushcraft also offers weekend experiences for families. From building shelters, to sharing stories round the campfire, it’s a great way to switch off from technology and reconnect with your family. Other two day experiences include a weekend trip learning how to navigate through UK woodlands.

Carry On Camping

Camping in the UK can be a challenge to say the least! It’s a bit like Marmite... you either love it or you hate it.

For those that love it, they can’t wait to get out into the open to enjoy fresh air, hiking, walking, climbing and all the simple pleasures of the countryside. Here are a few tips to help your next camping trip be even more enjoyable. When you’re knee deep in camping gear, it’s easy to forget some of the most important items like flashlights or plasters. Before your next trip, create a must-bring bag with these camping essentials so you’re never without that one thing you forgot to bring. First Aid Kit Burns, scratches, cuts or bumps—one of these is bound to happen on an active camping trip, making a first-aid kit one of the most important camping essentials you could bring. Don’t arrive at your campsite without it, and be sure to take it on your excursions, as well. Maps and Compass You have GPS on your phone, and you may even have a GPS system sitting in your cars centre console. Unfortunately, you may not get a signal in remote camping spots, or as you disappear into the forest to go hiking.

out wet clothes for dry ones or layer during a cold front. Suitable Footwear Remember you’re going to be walking on uneven ground and you may be walking long distances. A good pair of walking or hiking boots are a shrewd investment. The great thing about today’s marketplace is there is so much choice and with modern manufacturing methods the quality is assured. A Rucksack It’s likely you’ll be travelling around the countryside, make sure you are prepared with all the items you’ll need. A rucksack is the best way to keep everything safe and together. They help you easily and conveniently distribute the weight of your equipment. If you are a complete newbie or even a seasoned veteran, why not take a trip to Rock Fall, the outdoor superstore tucked on Alfreton Trading Estate. This second generation family business in Somercotes is proud to have opened its doors for the last 25 years. Go and see them for the largest range of outdoor products including walking boots at sizes 13+. Rock Fall, Wimsey Way, Alfreton Trading Estate, Somercotes, Derbyshire, DE55 4LS.

Have your navigation essentials, such as a map and compass, with you at all times in case your GPS is less than reliable. Alternate Weather Wear You’ve checked the weather forecast for weeks—no rain, only sun. Unfortunately, the weather can change at the drop of a dime, leaving you stuck in the rain or huddling around your campfire. With an extra set of clothes, you won’t have to worry about sudden weather changes; you can swap

Protecting Pets From The Sun

There is also a range of clothing products from hats and sun visors, through to sun suits like those made for children.

ven in a ‘British Summer,’ the sun’s rays can be harmful to our pets as well as to ourselves.

We’ve all become wiser about applying sunscreen and thinking about the effects of UV rays, but now we need to apply this to our pets too. Pets just like humans, can get sunburn if out in the sun for too long. In the longer term, exposure can trigger squamous cell carcinoma - a form of cancer. Most at risk are hairless varieties and white animals There are many products now available to help you protect your pet. These include sunscreens, special wipes, sunblock and soothing after-sun lotion. Always use products specifically designed for pets as human ones often contain salicylates, which may prove toxic.

If your pet will be in a vehicle, it is advisable to fit sun screens. When you are out and about, protect your pet by using umbrellas and sun shades or the shade of a tree. Products can be found in pet stores, online and at your vets. Try to avoid your pet being out in the midday sun, and always ensure your pet is well hydrated in hot weather. By Susan Brookes-Morris

American Style Cornbread An American favourite in honour of Independence Day.

Sift the flour, salt and baking powder together into a bowl. Add the sugar and polenta and mix together. Rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Lightly whisk the eggs in a separate bowl. Stir into the polenta mixture and mix until thoroughly combined.

Ingredients

Spoon the mixture into the prepared in and smooth the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes. To check it’s done insert a cocktail stick into the centre of the loaf and check to see whether it comes out clean. If it doesn’t then the loaf needs a few more minutes.

Vegetable oil (for greasing) 175g / 6oz plain flour 1 tsp salt 4 tsp baking powder 1 tsp caster sugar 280g / 10oz polenta 115g / 4oz butter (softened) 4 eggs 250ml / 9floz milk 3 tbsp double cream Method Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas mark 6. Brush a 20cm / 8inch square cake tin with oil.

When cooked, remove from the oven. Leave to cool slightly for ten minutes but serve warm for best results.

Wimbledon Facts

Wimbledon fortnight is the annual event which enthuses even non-tennis-lovers.

Here are some Wimbledon facts to muse on as you enjoy the matches. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event to be played on grass, which is cut to exactly 8mm for the competition. There is a strict dress code. Players must dress in mainly white clothing and umpires request them to comply. Even Roger Federer was asked to change his shoes because they had orange soles!

missing when they accidentally fly into the crowd. Balls are replaced every 7-9 games, and those not in use are stored in special refrigerated containers to make sure they are kept in peak condition. Wimbledon is synonymous with strawberries and more than 140 000 tubs will be consumed by spectators this year. Players on the other hand prefer bananas for energy and will consume around 15000 of them!

There are 250 ball boys and girls (known as BBGs) at Wimbledon. Their average age is 15. They are all volunteers selected from participating schools. Historically only boys were selected but in 1977 girls were used for the first time though it was only in 1985 they were allowed to appear on centre court. More than 50 000 tennis balls are used at Wimbledon every year! 700 or so go

Summer Savings

The long days of summer are not just lazy for us, they are also a quiet time for many tradesmen.

Think about it; as soon as the temperature drops at the end of September people will begin to think about cold snaps and central heating. They’ll probably arrange for their boiler to be serviced... along with everyone else. So get ahead of the game and book now. While you’re at it, if you have an open fire or a solid fuel range, order fuel now, in bulk while you can take advantage of lower summer prices. Summer is also a good time to organise a chimney sweep. There aren’t too many about and they tend to be swamped in the autumn as people think about using their fireplace again.

Other businesses with a quiet period during the summer are: Summer is traditionally a quiet time for financial advisers and companies specialising in investments. Perhaps you could benefit from a financial makeover. Bizarrely it’s a quiet time for train and coach travel so you might be able to pick up a bargain ticket or two. Summer has always been a quiet time for politics so perhaps now is a good time to tackle your MP about any local issues which are bothering you. The summer is generally a good time to check out your local high street for great deals on electrical goods. By Tom Hancock

Edwinstowe & The Dukeries Lions

Wherever you live, work or travel across the British Isles and Ireland, you are likely to come across members of Lions clubs and the projects we support.

From Abbeyleix to Aberdeen, Yarm to Yeovil, we cover the points of the compass and letters of the alphabet. Lions are ordinary people who do extraordinary things to help others and support good causes. We have 15,000 active members belonging to 900 local clubs throughout the British Isles and Ireland. Globally we have more volunteers in more places than any other service club organisation, and love to help others and make things happen. Every Lions Clubs supports a range of good causes and projects in its area where you can get involved. Every day Lions are having fun by organising remarkable and memorable fundraising activities - with every penny raised going direct to good causes.

We are involved in raising funds for good causes, organising local events, providing direct support for individuals or groups in the community, helping our partners and responding proactively wherever and whenever we can. All members of Lion Clubs International are committed to serving local communities and share a set of common values. As volunteers, we are enthusiastic about making a difference and achieving extraordinary things. As people, we are ordinary men and women, who enjoy ourselves and gain satisfaction from playing a key role at the heart of the community. To find out more or to become involved with helping your community ring Lion President Steve Scall 07779 338887 or email stevescall@gmail.com

All Lions Clubs administrative costs are covered by the modest annual subscription paid by individual members. Every year in Europe alone, Lions Clubs’ members volunteer around 6 million hours of service and raise £88 million to support the needs of local communities. Lions serve wherever and whenever we can. Lions clubs serve local communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding. In towns, villages and cities near you. In hospitals, schools and community centres. In places battered by natural disasters and where people need us, Lions can be found helping, leading, planning and supporting. Because we are local, we serve the unique needs of the communities in which we live. As we are global, we can address community challenges wherever they occur.
