This service is available to Gold and Double Gold members who are either (i) an owner-occupier; or (ii) a tenant aged over 30 where we have installed a smart meter in their property. All the light bulbs in the member’s home will be changed provided we have an LED equivalent, and the existing bulbs are safely and easily accessible. The typical value of £300-£500 is based on 39 LED bulbs at an average retail price of £8 plus a £100 charge for fitting. All light bulbs supplied and fitted by us are covered by a 36 month warranty. In addition, if a member notifies us at any time thereafter that a light bulb we have fitted is defective or has reached the end of its useful life, we will post them a replacement light bulb free of charge provided that (i) we have been supplying all their communication services continuously between the date the LED light bulbs were originally installed and the date we are notified that a replacement LED light bulb is required; (ii) their electricity service is being provided by us on the date the replacement is requested; (iii) there are no monies outstanding on the member’s account with us; and (iv) we have not received a termination notice from the member on any of the services we are supplying to them at that time. 15% quoted saving based on a typical household using 3,100 kWh of electricity, where 39 traditional light bulbs are changed to LEDs, with an average reduction of 45W per light bulb (eg. from 50W to 5W) and where each LED light bulb is used for an average of 45 minutes per day. If we fit new LED light bulbs in a member’s home and they cease to take any landline, broadband or mobile service from us within the following four years (which they were taking at any time after they requested our free light bulb replacement service), they will need to pay a contribution towards the cost of the LED bulbs we provided; the size of this contribution varies between £2 - £8 per bulb, depending on how long their bulbs have been installed. This offer can be withdrawn at any time. For full terms and conditions refer to the Utility Warehouse website.

Well just a couple of weeks left at school for our children, the older ones going off to Uni or their first foot in to the big wide world and their first job, we wish them all well in what they choose to do. Summer holidays are therefore upon us with some quality time with our loved ones flying off to warmer climates. Remembering to cover up with the sun cream so we all remain safe in the sun. We all need some outside sunshine to maintain our Vitamin D levels to prevent SAD (seasonal affective disorder) SAD is sometimes known as “winter depression” because the symptoms are more apparent and tend to be more severe during the winter. The symptoms often begin in the autumn as the days start getting shorter. They’re typically most severe during December, January and February but seeing its July we don’t have to worry about that just yet! Choosing the right factor sun cream is something we do have to worry about

though and being mindful that some clothing fabrics can be penetrated with UV light might mean you still need to apply that sun cream. Heatstroke can also be very unpleasant with symptoms such as sickness, headache feeling nauseous, cramps and a high temperature above the normal 37 degrees Celsius. Stay hydrated with lots of water and if your having a nice cool beer or glass or two of prosecco try and introduce a glass of water to every alcoholic drink. There are summer festivals, concerts and garden fetes all over our area these next few months so have lots of fun and stay safe !

Garden View

Outside Seating - Choose A Garden Seat This year I decided to buy an all-weather seat for my garden. Bizarrely I didn’t actually have a permanent place to sit where I could admire my hard work. There is an art to choosing and placing garden seating. First decide whether you want to sit in full sun, or dappled shade. Watch the path of the sun and make a note of which particular parts of the garden are illuminated at each time of day. Think about when you will sit in you garden. Will you want to eat breakfast out there? If so pop a seat and little table in a spot which catches the morning sun. If like many of us the only chance you get to sit out is during the evening then look for an area which is bathed in golden light of late afternoon. Would you like to dine out doors in the evening? Can you make room for a table, and would a patio heater be a good investment, so you can make the most of the setting. If the only area you can place a bench is in baking sun then it’s good to place some sort of overhead structure. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Sawn tanalised timbers can be used to make a very simple frame over which you can train a vine or climber.

12

www.spotlightlocal.

Use galvanised screws and it should last 20 years, providing a delightful place to rest. Choose all-weather furniture for ease of use unless you have oodles of storage space for the winter months. Plastic is cheap but can look very tacky. There are some wonderful synthetic wicker style pieces available now though, and excellent metal furniture which requires no care at all. My favourite material is wood though mostly this does require ongoing maintenance. I did discover some rather attractive polystyrene slatted furniture on an aluminium frame which looked remarkably like the real deal.

If finances allow you can buy beautiful teak wood furniture which requires very little in the way of after care. Try before you buy! Yes you want your furniture to look wonderful but the most important factor is comfort. Are the seats wide enough? Is there enough back support? Does it come with pads? Finally, to bring a touch of indoor comfort and style to an outdoor area I discovered outdoor rugs! Yes really. Made from longlasting material, outdoor rugs can cope with rain or shine. They are made from robust, resistant, easy-care synthetic fibres, which absorb minimal moisture and which dry quickly afterwards.

Summer Concerts

They Have Never Been More Popular Just Add Children! Summer concerts for families have never been more popular. Whether your tastes extend to the classics, jazz, pop or folk there will be an outdoor event to suit your family.

so there’s plenty of room for running around and even outdoor games such as frisbees and football, providing they’re played well away from the main crowd.

Most young children will not mind which genre you choose. What they’ll love is the idea of a leisurely picnic, a chance to run around outside and possibly sideshows like jugglers, magicians and face painters.

Evening concerts are really exciting for children. Being allowed to stay up past normal bedtime is always a thrill and as night falls and people light candles and lanterns the scene becomes magical.

If you’re a summer concert virgin and you’re not sure how your offspring will behave, try a free concert in a local park first off. You will feel more relaxed and they can clap and sing along without you worrying that their antics might disturb other people. But even larger, more formal concerts tend to be rather informal. It’s probably best that your kids are versed in basic etiquette like not running through other people’s picnic areas and not throwing food or scrapping with siblings.

Also many evening concerts have a firework finale. Then there’s the excitement of finding your car in the dark with your torch. What more could a child want? Tips for Outdoor Concerts Choose to sit further back from the stage than you would if you were alone. Dedicated concert goers

and those without children tend to sit near the front and they might not take kindly to boisterous youngsters. Sitting further back gives you all more room to stretch out and wander around. Take small amounts of lots of different foods. Variety will keep them interested. Take folding chairs, sunscreen, hats, insect repellent or citronella candles and lots of rugs. Comfort is important, especially as the sun disappears. A flask of hot chocolate is a winner when the evening air takes on a chill. Some glowsticks or lanterns will make the event extra special. By Sarah Davey

But with a dose of general good manners normal lively behaviour is well tolerated at such events. Most concerts tend to take place in large fields anyway

I Want To Ride My Bicycle Cycling Is Increasing In Popularity Enjoy Cycling Safely This Summer!

Do you remember the thrill of owning your first bike? That sense of freedom and speed? Cycling has increased in popularity again since London 2012 and rightly so – it’s an eco-friendly, sociable and healthy activity. Regular family cycling trips can provide a wealth of new experiences and a sense of adventure and bonding. It’s never too late to start: even if junior is too young for their own bike they will love to travel along with you. Please note that for most trai lers and all child bike seats the child should be able to support their own head wearing a cycle helmet. For most children this is between 10-14 months but be sure to take advice from your local cycle specialist. Trailers These attach to the adult’s bike and may be single or double. They offer some protection from the elements as they can be covered. They can also take children up to 45Kg.

on the road, some drivers may not see it. Hire before you buy. Most cycle-hire outlets offer a good range. It’s a great way to find out if a trailer is for you. You can buy specialist trailers for babies too young to travel in child seats or in conventional trailers. The child is securely strapped in and the framework acts as a roll-cage in case of a toppling accident. The beauty of these specialised trailers is that they also convert into a buggy. They’re not recommended for road use though. Child bike seat These are comfortable and offer a great view as the child is raised up. Choose the seat according to the child’s weight and height rather than age as children vary so much. Carrying a child alters the centre of gravity of the bike

so practice on soft ground or in a safe area before you venture out on to the roads. Trailer bikes / Tag-alongs These have one wheel, and a saddle with a curved frame which attaches to the adult bike. The child can peddle or just hitch a ride. For an older child who wants to ride independently but who tires on long cycle rides, you can buy a connector kit to attach their bike to the adult bike. Consult your local dealer for advice. IMPORTANT No-one should travel in a conventional trailer or bike seat unless they are wearing a helmet. Bike seats (and to some extent trailers) leave children exposed to the elements. Wrap them up warm in cold weather, and make sure they’re slathered in sunscreen when it’s sunny.

An older child has enough space to take along their own snacks and a couple of toys. They can nap in comfort if they wish. The disadvantage of a trailer is its proximity to the ground: it doesn’t afford much of a view. There is also a danger that, if used

Why We Need Bedtime Stories

I loved bedtime stories as a child and now I’m enjoying them again with my own children. Bedtime stories are calming, fun and snugly time and those are good enough reasons on their own for indulging. But Bedtime stories have other benefits too. Communication Reading is one of the most important communication tools available to us and is fundamental in establishing essential pathways in the brains of early learners.

It enhances basic speech and reading skills, but less obvious skills such as, those required to make friends in the playground, and to concentrate in class. Improved Emotional Understanding Most of us have cried or laughed at a good book. Bedtime reading can help us broach difficult topics in a safe environment. We can explore powerful emotions through the medium of fiction. The shared experience of reading together fosters stronger connections and provide topics of conversations well beyond the fifteen minutes at bedtime. Improves imagination and feeds curiosity The effect of reading on an individual’s imagination is unparalleled. Books allow our children to explore both our world and fictional ones. It can also help to express their individuality and help them discover interests that may not be covered at school.

Are You Committing Emoji Abuse?!

More than 6 million of them are sent every day, but are you misusing your emojis? Read on…

So an iPhone user sending a ‘stressed’ emoji can appear to be sending a happy emoji to an android user!

Emojis are a fun way to communicate. Millennials were the early adopters of emojis but bizarrely it’s the older generation who seem to be most guilty of emoji abuse.

And take care you are using the correct emoji. My mother (notice the theme here) once sent a text notifying me that my father had hurt his back. She thought she had sent a crying ‘sad’ emoji,

My mother regularly sends me texts which are strings of hearts, wine glasses and smiley faces (maybe I should worry about her love life and / or her drinking habits!) Emojis are like seasoning. Used sparingly they add flavour and a personal touch to your texts. Over use them and they become off-putting very quickly. One place to avoid them is in more formal relationships, like with your boss or immediate superior. Also, bear in mind that emojis don’t always translate well across mobile platforms.

but in fact had sent me a ‘crying with laughter’ emoji, (which incidentally accounts for 20% of all emojis sent!). I assumed it was a comedy accident and replied accordingly, only to find out my poor dad was completely immobilised. So take care people. Ignore emoji etiquette at your peril. By Tracey Andrews

Return Of The Pawnbroker A Sign Of The Times?

What do you think of when you see the word pawnbroker? The slums of Dickens? The austerityyears of the 1930’s Great Depression? Think again; modern pawnbrokers are rather smart establishments, and don’t look out of place on the high street. After World War II the pawnbrokering went into something of a decline and by the Seventies it had almost died out as a trade with maybe just fifty or so in the whole of the British Isles, generally in poorer areas which boasted a high concentration of itinerant workers. Now there are over a thousand pawnbrokers in the UK and they are appearing in traditionally affluent areas. The industry is worth an estimated £100 million per year! The Australians have also followed suit with their Cash-Converters, high street buy-back chain.

piece of jewellery or a watch through to a prize car or even a house. One London pawnbroker says he was once offered a Lear Jet! Likewise the clients have changed too. In the old days it was men trying to make enough to pay the rent man or the landlord. Now it’s just as likely to be a middle class couple looking for a way to pay the mortgage or the school fees. So how does it work? Pawnbrokers and their like give a client money in return for an object that is held as security until the customer pays off the loan and any interest charges. There are no credit checks and, once the item is valued and a rate of interest agreed, the customer leaves with the money.

the client can reclaim their goods. If the loan is not paid back then the pawnbroker has the right to extend the terms or sell the goods, though many are reluctant to do this as they thrive on repeat business. Buy-back shops are slightly different. Here the client sells their item with an option to buy it back within 28 days. If they don’t reclaim it then the shop can sell the item. The Consumer Credit Act states that a pawnbroker must give their client a receipt displaying the date the redemption period ends; the amount of credit secured by the pledge, and the interest rate, plus any other charges that individual lender may apply. If you lose your receipt inform your pawnbroker immediately so that no one else can present it.

If the loan is paid back within the agreed time

What’s caused the change? Many of us seem to have lost faith in the banking system which in turn seems to have lost faith in itself as it restricts credit. People suddenly see pawnbrokers as a way of generating cash. Modern pawnbrokers offer a discreet and confidential service where clients can pledge anything from a

Ready For Retirement? Maybe You Just Aren’t Ready Yet! So What Can You Do?

Even though retirement ages have been increased recently many people find that when the time comes we don’t feel quite ready to down tools and head to the allotment or the golf course. All the knowledge, skills and qualifications we’ve achieved over the years can’t just be switched off, and we might not feel ready to step out of working life entirely. So if the calendar says one thing but our heart and mind disagree, what should we do? Don’t despair; there are in excess of 1.3 million pensioners still in work. We represent 11% of the total workforce, and are living proof that many companies recognise our experience. Staged Retirement Talk to your boss or line manager in advance of your retirement. Ask if you can stage your retirement over a couple of years, maybe dropping to a three day week, then two days etc. Many companies are happy to accommodate loyal employees. Stress that it will make any transitions run more smoothly because you will be able to pass on your knowledge to your replacement and allow them to gradually take over. If you regularly deal with

If you prefer to talk to someone in person on the phone, ensure you have all relevant information to hand: P45, NI Number etc. Even if you’re only entitled to a few pennies at this stage, the important thing is that you are registered. Other benefits may come your way later. Job-hunting www. jobcentreguide.co.uk provides an abundance of information on vacancies and also free CV advice, which is especially helpful if you are out of practice in the art of selling yourself to a prospective employer. You can register your CV on line with any number of agencies, such as www.reed.co.uk, which show jobs in your area, and assist with careers advice. If you prefer to register in person, pop into your local

These are all positive moves which will help you feel more confident and in control. There are many ways to research information about employment. The library and your local college are good starting points. Libraries often have computer terminals available for public use, and some run courses if your PC skills need polishing. When you get an interview: Be positive Stress the good reputation of the firm plus other positive information. Play to your strengths Explain how the skills you’ve acquired throughout your working life will benefit this company Play down the negatives of retirement Describe any voluntary work, hobbies studying and training you’ve completed. As an older person Play on your experience and loyalty but… Reassure the employer You are hard working, flexible and willing to learn. Think of retirement as a fresh start. It may be a chance to reinvent yourself and it’s never too late to land your dream job. Good luck.

Nelson’s Ashes Cricket Club

The Nelson’s Ashes Cricket Club – Sutton on Trent Captain– (Midweek) Charley Turlukowski 07875792727 Captain– (Sundays) Simon Hempsall 07909092733 With our season now in full swing it is encouraging to report that we are enjoying our mid-week evening matches, although the weather could have been a little kinder. On Wednesday 24th May we played away at RHP Winthorpe. They chose to bat first and with the loss of only 2 wickets achieved 142 runs, with their opening batsman scoring 83 runs including 4 sixes, before being bowled out by Harrison Chalkley. We unfortunately could not respond due to their strong bowling team, with 6 of their team members all taking 2 overs each. Not that we are allowed to single individual players out!, but it was noted by many at the match that our Sunday Captain/Club Chairman Simon Hempsall was bowled out for just 3 runs by RHP’s only female bowler, never the less a very enjoyable evening of cricket.

Our next match was again away @ East Marham & Ollerton. We batted first and although Adam Turlukowski scored three 6’s in his innings we were unable to contain their batsman from scoring the necessary 82 runs in the allotted overs. On Tuesday 13th June we played away again against NRFC @ Collingham. NRFC opened the batting with a 120 in the allotted overs for the loss of 4 wickets. Nelson Ashes responded well with Warren Rhodes scoring 53 and James Barnes 39, but unfortunately in the last over of the evening we were unable to score enough runs and lost by just 4 runs. Never the less a lovely evening of cricket for all involved. In July we have an away mid-week evening match against Collingham Traders on Wed 5th July followed by a home match against RHP on Wed 12th and then our last midweek evening match at home is on 19th July against East Markham & Ollerton. Also during the month we have two Sunday fixtures, the first away against Clumber on 16th and then at home on 23rd against Wellow. Bert Smith

Sculpture Parks

The sculpture parks and trails of England are a rather well-kept secret. They are found all over the country and are great places to visit and introduce the kids to real art.

New Art Centre, Wiltshire – set in beautiful lovingly planted gardens.

They are also good introductions to for anyone who is curious about art but feels they would be a bit out of their depth in a gallery. You can take a picnic and the children can run around. Many are free, or very cheap to enter. Each sculpture park is different in character depending on the surrounding countryside. Why not have a day outdoors and take in some culture at the same time? Our picks of the parks are: Yorkshire Sculpture Park – with pieces by Elisabeth Frink, Barbara Hepworth and Antony Gormley

Burghley House and Gardens, Stamford – My children loved this when they were tiny. There is an additional garden of surprises with quirky water sculptures that children can play in. Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail, Gloucestershire – 20 sculptures set along a trail which takes about three hours to walk round. The Pride of the Valley Sculpture Park, Surrey – An enormous number of sculptures, and a varied landscape including lakes and woodland. Broomhill Art and Sculpture Garden, Devon – More than 300 sculptures in 10 acres of land!
