Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Never Too Late

ardening is an ongoing affair and though timing is important, we often become overwhelmed by a sense of being ‘too late to plant’ by some arbitrary date. Often we bandy dates around as though they were written in stone.

My granddad insisted all potatoes and spring beans had to be sown by Good Friday, and the gooseberry bush had to be in leaf before the runner beans were sown. But in fact each season is different and garden planting dates are more flexible than traditional wisdom would have us believe! The good news is that it’s not too late to plant a great garden, even in June and July. While it is true that fruiting plants like tomatoes and peppers really need to be set out now, many other summer producers will grow even more quickly from seeds planted in early summer, when the soil is already well warmed. You’ll be surprised how fast seeds will come up and explode with growth: cucumbers, beans and winter squashes, pumpkins, beets, carrots, chard and scallions, are all suitable for June planting.

I usually start seeds every month, finishing sowing summer-producing vegetables in late June. In July and August, I move on to seeds for autumn crops like spinach, radishes, kale, leeks, peas, broccoli, more mild mustards and some pak choi. June is not too late for flowers either. I’ve planted marigolds, sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias and nasturtiums at this time of year. That way when the first annuals have burned out by late summer I have a lovely smaller flush of blooms to enjoy. If you really want to get ahead, June and July are also good times to start seeds for perennials and biennials to bloom next spring. Sow seeds in a protected seed bed, and then transplant seedlings in the autumn to overwinter. Next spring you’ll be rewarded handsomely with garden full of glorious colour. Enjoy your garden. Rachel Leverton

It’s a great time to start a crop of ‘cut and come again’ salad mix and mild mustards. You can also plant heat-andsun-loving herbs like basil, marjoram, chives, oregano, thyme and sage. Just keep the seed beds well moistened. And even if you were super-efficient and your early-planted beans, squash, chard, carrots and basil plants are growing well, June is a terrific time to start a second crop to have ready for a late summer harvest, when the first crops of these staples have finished up.

Anyone For Tennis

It’s Wimbledon fortnight

A broken pony-roller belonging to the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club was the catalyst which led to the birth of the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world: Wimbledon. When the roller broke in 1877 the members decided to hold a lawn tennis competition to raise funds for repair. There were 22 male competitors who each paid a one guinea entrance fee. The champion was 27-year-old Spencer Gore who won 12 guineas and yes, it did rain on the day of the finals! In spite of the weather the competition was such a success that it became an annual event. In fact there have been only ten Wimbledon-free years since that first competition: four years during the First World War and six during the Second World War. At the start the only event was the gentlemen’s singles. Then, in 1884 the ladies’ singles and the gentlemen’s doubles were added, followed by the ladies’ doubles and the mixed doubles in 1913.

of titles just before the Second World War. Then, in the glorious summer of 2013 Andy Murray finally brought the title home to Britain and won the heart of the nation. He’s on a high this year having married his fiancé Kim Sears in the spring. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if he made this a real fairytale year and won Wimbledon again? Wimbledon: Fascinating Facts The first black person to win Wimbledon was a woman, the American Althea Gibson, in 1957 and 1958. The first, and only, black male to win was Arthur Ashe, who beat Jimmy Connors in 1975. The last British woman to win Wimbledon was Virginia Wade in the silver Jubilee year, 1977. It is the only tennis competition where players are required to wear all or predominantly white clothing. In 2002 Anna Kournikova had to change her black shorts for white ones on court! Every year about 27,000 kilos of strawberries, 7,000 litres of cream, 60,000 pints of Pimms and 14,000 bottles of Champagne are consumed by spectators during Wimbledon. By Louise Addison

Only top-ranked amateurs were allowed to play until 1968 when the tournament became ‘open’, meaning that professionals could finally enter. The British dominated The Championships, as they are known, for the first 30 years: Ernest and William Renshaw, and Laurie and Reggie Doherty were national heroes. But our winning streak didn’t last. Until recently the last British man to win at Wimbledon was Fred Perry in 1936. He won a hat trick

How To Find A Registered Electrician

Take care when selecting an electrician to work in your home

As an electrician working in your local area, I see many instances where electrical work has been carried out in a dangerous way. Dangerous electrical work puts you and your family in danger of electrical shock and house fire, does not meet the latest electrical regulation standards, and chances are the work is not guaranteed against defect either.

Authorised register of electricians in England and Wales who are suitably qualified and registered to work in peoples homes.

Check that the electrician you are planning on using appears on this register which can be found on: www.electricalcompetentperson.co.uk

Before you use the services of an electrician always make sure they are qualified and Part P registered.

Unqualified and unregistered electricians cost YOU money. Most people using the services of people like this end up having to pay twice. It is more cost effective to pay once and get the job done properly the first time.

Part P registration is essential as without certification the electrical work does not meet the Part P regulation. It is far more costly to seek Part P certification for electrical work separately and even then it may not meet the standard.

Never DIY electrical work or use the services of someone who is not on the register. Never settle for anything less than a qualified and registered electrician when having electrical work carried out in your home.

Checking qualifications and registration details is much easier now following the introduction of the only Government

Summer Coctails

Is there anything nicer than sipping a Pimms or a G&T on a warm summer evening in the garden? Probably not but sometimes the occasion seems to call for something more...well...interesting.

People are very coy about cocktails yet many are not complicated and they always impress guests. So here is my guide to making three perfect, refreshing cocktails; two alcoholic and one for non-drinkers. The Mojito - serves 4 Ice cubes 6fl oz light rum 4 whole and 8 broken mint sprigs (spearmint is lovely) 6 tbsp fresh lime juice 4 tbsp sugar Club soda 4 slices lime Place the ice in a beverage shaker (I’ve used a large Tupperware cup with a lid before now!) Add the rum, the 8 broken mint sprigs, the lime juice and the sugar.

14

Shake well and pour over ice in tall glasses. Top up each glass with club soda to taste. Garnish with a slice of lime and a sprig of mint. Serve. The Sea Breeze - serves 1 Ice cubes 2 fl oz vodka 2 fl oz cranberry juice 2fl oz fresh grapefruit juice Lime wedge Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour the vodka, cranberry and grapefruit juices over the ice. Stir gently, squeeze the lime into the drink then drop it into the glass. Serve. The Shirley Temple - serves 1 Ice Grenadine Ginger Ale 2 lemon wedges Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour a couple of dashes of grenadine over and top up with ginger ale. Squeeze the lemon wedges over then drop into the glass. Serve.

A Good Read

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon Wellington is dead. He was killed with a fork. That’s not quite so odd though. It was a garden fork.

Discovering the body of his neighbour’s dog, 15 year old Christopher is determined to find out what happens so he decides to do some ‘detecting’. What he discovers will tell him so much more than just who killed Wellington. As a reader you see the world through Christopher’s eyes. A world where maths is in charge and helps to make sense of everything. A world where seeing five red cars in a row is a sign of a ‘super good day.’ Christopher has Asperger’s Syndrome: a form of high functioning autism. This means that he doesn’t see things the same as others do. Facial expressions are difficult to decode – his teacher gives him clues to help him – and metaphors are just confusing and don’t really help you to understand things because you have to spend so much time trying to work out what it means. This highly acclaimed novel is an insight into a world inhabited by many people, but alien to most of the population. Haddon also brings out the difficulties of raising a child with Asperger’s. His widowed father tries to be patient but struggles with the lack of emotion from his son.

you will feel reluctant to leave him as he takes the next steps through life, telling us, “I can do anything.” And like many people with Asperger’s, he just might. Jack Stalwart: The deadly race to space: Russia by Elizabeth Singer Hunt Most nine year olds only have school to worry about. Jack’s life is a bit more complicated than that. He is a secret agent. It must run in the family as his older brother Max was also a secret agent: only he has now gone missing. Jack must travel around the world battling some of the most dangerous villains there are, in the hope that he will one day find Max. In this book (the ninth in the series) Jack must find the space project’s chief engineer who has gone missing on the eve of the launch of manned mission to Mars. With his spy gadgets, such as gripper gloves and a mind eraser, this appears to be straightforward, but Jack is in for a shock. The Jack Stalwart books are aimed at young readers aged 7+ and appear to be a natural draw for boys of this age. Hunt cleverly mixes fiction and non-fiction in this series. Each book is set in a different country and contains factual information as part of the story, plus ‘fact file’ pages in the book.

In many ways Christopher has a better way of coping with life as he can shut himself away in a world ruled by algebra, patterns, and prime numbers.

This age is a tricky one when it comes to reading, especially for boys, and the fast-pace of the story, plus the non-fiction aspect is a definite plus.

Written in the first person, Christopher’s ‘voice’ is distinctive and original. As the novel draws towards its rewarding ending

Volunteers Week

Volunteers Week 1 -7 June2015

Volunteers’ week is a fantastic annual celebration of the amazing work that millions of volunteers do across the UK. It’s been running for over thirty years and aims to showcase volunteering work and its benefits. Volunteers now work in many different types of organisations. Last year in my immediate local area I interviewed a small sample and they included: dog-walkers for the Retired Greyhound Trust, a lady who was part of the costume team at a theatre, a school governor and a volunteer baker at one of the oldest watermills in Birmingham. There are a vast array of options for all ages and abilities. You can volunteer in your local neighbourhood, online or even abroad. Close to home, you could for instance, work in a charity shop, run a scout group, take part in conservation work at your local canal, help do the administrative tasks for a charity, be a Guide at a National Trust Stately Home or befriend those in hospital for instance Some employers give staff paid time off to do occasional volunteering and some have employer-supported volunteering schemes To find out about opportunities, you can contact charities and organisations directly or get in touch with your local Volunteer Centre. One of the main online resources is the National Council of Voluntary Organisation website: - https://www.ncvo.org. uk . On there, you can find links to thousands of positions as well as lots of valuable information.

type of cause you want to work for and then seek out relevant organisations. When you have selected some preferred organisations, you should research them thoroughly and try to speak to some of those who currently volunteer for them to find out what it’s really like. You should also consider the skills you have to offer or want to acquire and the time you have available so that you can select the most suitable type of role. It’s also a good idea to undertake a trial period or shadowing so that both parties can see if it will be a good fit. There are many potential benefits to volunteering including: a sense of pride at having given something back to your community, making new friends, a chance to gain new skills and work in an environment or for a cause that you are passionate about. If you’d like to add travelling to your outcomes, you could also consider volunteering abroad. Take a look at the websites such as Volunteer Services Overseas, http://www.vsointernational.org, Tourist Concern http://tourismconcern.org.uk/volunteer and UN Volunteers http://www.unv.org to find out more. By Susan Brookes-Morris

They suggest that if you are looking for a voluntary role, you firstly need to consider what

Bathing Beauty Swimsuit Guide

friend of mine was delighted recently to win a swimming lesson with former Olympic breaststroke champion Duncan Goodhew, but her initial euphoria was soon replaced with feelings of dread as she contemplated what to wear for her big occasion. The ultimate, most terrifying stage fright – with the exception of total nudity – is the bathing suit. Thoughts about whether “my bum looks big in this” pale into insignificance as we consider exposing every bump and lump imaginable in the most revealing item next to our birthday suit!

Everyone has something about their body that they think looks horrible in a swimsuit, so when looking for the ideal swimwear, the secret is to find something that creates a sense of balance and draws attention to the most flattering parts of our figure whilst masking our trouble spots. Most of us fit into three problem shapes – pear, apple and straight (or athletic). Pears are heavy around the hips and thighs, and wearing a plunging neckline or eye-catching top with ruffles or embellishments will make the bust look bigger and will also draw attention away from the heavier bottom half.

be afraid to buy different sized separates in complimentary designs. For example bottoms in a bright or patterned fabric and a top in a plain, darker fabric, will help draw attention away from the bust. If you need to disguise a large tummy, a one piece suit with ruched panels or shirring will hide bulges and create definition, as will a wrap over design with crossover fabric. Straight shapes need to create the illusion of more curves, and the monokini is great for this, as is a one-piece with strategically placed cuts or slits. Bold prints, ruffles and embellishments on tops and bottoms accentuate the bust and hip lines, and skimpier bikini bottoms plus side ties will make your bottom appear curvier. Finally, before selecting your swimwear, consider how and when you plan on wearing it. Whether you intend to go swimming or scuba diving, or spend your time sunbathing will have an influence on the style, fabric and even the colour you choose.

Padded, push up tops make boobs look bigger and bandeau tops make the bust appear wider. High cut bottoms make the legs look longer if this is also an issue. Apples have large busts and thick waists with comparatively small hips. Boy shorts make the hips look wider and help to give balance. Tops that are cut straight across help to minimise large busts, and for extra support bikini tops should be under-wired, and one piece suits should have higher backs. If finding the perfect fit for both top and bottom halves is a problem, don’t

Microchipping Pets

rom April 2016 it will be compulsory for a dog to be microchipped in the UK. But what is a microchip and what does it do? Microchipping seeks to aid reuniting lost or stolen pets with their owners with their pets. It should be used in conjunction with the usual tag and collar. The computer microchip contains a unique identity number and is housed in a type of glass which is compatible with living tissue. The whole thing is about the size of a grain of rice. A special syringe and needle are used to implant the chip between your pet’s shoulder blades. The insertion isn’t painful and a check will be made using a handheld device immediately afterwards to ensure that the chip’s data is readable.

The code and owners details are then stored on a national database. It is important to update your details on the database if you move. Many pets are suitable for microchipping including dogs, cats, rabbits and horses. Charities such as the Dogs Trust are so passionate about its importance that they offer it for free at their rehoming centres and run chipping roadshow events throughout the year. Vets and other organisations charge for microchipping, and costs will vary depending on the size of your pet and where you live. From April 2016 it will be compulsory for a dog to be microchipped in the UK. By Susan Brookes-Morris
