Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Antiques & Collectables

A special antiques and collectables valuation event will be taking place soon in our area.

The experts of Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free valuations to the public on Wednesday 29th June, 10am to 2pm, at Ruddington Grange Golf Club, Wilford Road, Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, NG11 6NB (free car parking available). They will be valuing: Coins, stamps, banknotes, medals & militaria, antiques, clocks, watches, jewellery, gold, silver, pre-1900 documents/books & maps, cigarette-cards, postcards, pre-1960 sporting programmes & tickets, scientific instruments, swords, bayonets and antique firearms. No appointment necessary. Members of the public will have the option to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms & conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge, with no obligation.

They have conducted hundreds of these events across the UK. Some of the best items they have auctioned were brought along previous events such as two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware which we sold on behalf of the owners for over £75,000. One of the most interesting items they have sold recently was a fragment of pennant flag belonging to the army of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. Its owners brought it along to one of our valuation events! We sold it for them for £2800 in one of our auctions. They will also be holding earlier events in Doncaster on 27th June, and Worksop 28th June. Any questions call 01473 627110, email sales@lockdales.com or check out our website www.lockdales.com

The Difficult Patch

Every garden has a couple of problem patches. I’m often asked which plants I’d recommend for a problem area and two which always crop up are damp shade and dry shade. Let’s deal with damp shade first. It’s actually less of a problem than you might expect. Okay, you’ll never grow a good lawn there, bulbs will rot, and sun-loving annuals won’t thrive, but there are loads of plants that will look wonderful. The trick in the case of damp shade is to go for leaf colour, plant form, and texture. Ajuga is excellent for ground cover. A. metallica has purple leaves and tiny blue flowers and A. reptans ‘Variegata’ is a pretty variegated cream and green variety. Astilbe does very well in damp shade; it has impressive red, pink or white flowery plumes depending on the variety chosen. Hostas are also a good choice, though in damp conditions you’ll need to be on slugwatch! If your shade is very dense then don’t choose golden varieties as the colour will fade. Hostas look wonderful planted with primulas, which also do well in these conditions.

Bergenias are attractive but tough enough for dry shade and their leathery leaves colour well in the autumn, particularly Bergenia cordifolia purpurea. The pink flowered varieties are the most commonly seen but there are red and white varieties too. I have a ‘Bressingham White’ which is quite lovely. My favourite plant for dry shade is the Euphorbia. Not all varieties are suited to these conditions but E. amygdaloides with it’s red stems and lime-green flower heads will generally do very well. Solomon’s Seal (polygonatum multiflorum) is another standby. It looks like a large lily of the valley and the variegated variety is very pretty. The trick with problem areas is to embrace them as part of your garden Treated as a gardening challenge they can be fun to plant and you’ll feel a tremendous sense of achievement when you do succeed. Happy planting! Rachel Leverton

Some ferns love damp shade, including the Maidenhair fern, Adiantum pedatum; most varieties of dryopteris, and the ostrich feather fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Dry shade is definitely trickier. I don’t recommend fighting Mother Nature but I do think dry shade is one area where she sometimes needs a hand, so enrich dry soil with compost, wellrotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost before planting, as this will encourage some moisture retention.

Avocado & Poached Eggs

Avocado and Poached Egg on Toast A simple but oh so tasty summery breakfast or light supper Preparation Time: 10 mins Cooking Time: 10 mins Serves 4

Ingredients 4 fresh eggs 2 ripe avocados Juice of one lemon 1 tsp chilli flakes or 1/2 red chilli, finely chopped 4 thick slices bread, toasted (sourdough bread is wonderful if you can get it)

Repeat with a second egg. Cook each egg for 3-4mins until white is barely set. Remove eggs with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Bring the water back to a simmer and repeat with remaining eggs Meanwhile, halve and de-stone avocados. In a large bowl, roughly mash avocados, lemon juice and chilli. Season to taste. Spread the avocado mixture over the toast, top each serving with an egg and serve immediately.

Method Heat a pan of lightly salted water to a simmer. Crack one of the eggs into a cup, then make a whirlpool with a spoon in the water and carefully tip the egg into the water.

National Picnic Week

The weather’s warming up, so why not get outside and go for a picnic? 11-19 June is National Picnic Week: a celebration of picnicking that’s been happening in the UK for over a decade. Some see picnics as a romantic affair to be shared with a loved one, fine foods and a bottle of champagne. For others it’s an inexpensive family day out and often a reminder of childhood days. Or it could be a chance to spend time with friends, choosing to meet at a given location and each bringing along their favourite food and drinks to share.

The Oxford Dictionary describes a picnic as ‘an occasion when a packed meal is eaten outdoors, especially during an outing to the countryside.’ Whilst many do choose a countryside spot for their picnic there are many other options including local parks, the grounds of stately homes, the seaside and riverside settings. You can find recommendations for places to enjoy your picnic on the National Picnic Week website: www.nationalpicnicweek. co.uk or you could try asking friends for their preferences.

Carrying your picnic on a bike ride can create extra difficulties but add to the fun. Utilise specialist plastic containers, cling film, foil and sandwich bags, or buy items pre-packed. You could even splash out on a traditional picnic hamper. You can now buy a wide range of stylish brightly coloured plastic plates, cutlery and cups to enhance your experience. It’s a good idea to remember to take napkins or kitchen roll and some wet wipes, as eating a picnic can get a little messy, particularly if you are sat on a picnic rug rather than at a table. Do take some bags for your rubbish too; never leave litter behind. It’s not just about the food and drink. Most picnics include some form of group exercise such as a walk, cycle, swim or game of rounders, in addition to a good laugh and a chat. This makes picnics a stress-busting, healthy activity. And if the weather isn’t kind you can still create a picnic atmosphere indoors. You could even try a ‘carpet picnic’ at home. Kids love them! By Susan Brookes-Morris

For many people a picnic consists of traditional items such as sandwiches, crisps, boiled eggs and cakes or fruit. Research shows however that Mediterranean options such as deli-style meats, olives, humus and crackers are also now commonly included and some choose to create items from special picnic recipe books. One of the tricks of picnicking successfully is packaging items correctly to ensure food is not squashed beyond recognition and drinks don’t leak.

Benefits Of Buying Locally

Your spending will boost the local economy. Research on spending by local authorities shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p stayed in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business. When you shop at local butchers, bakers, farm shops and green grocers, it is likely that a decent percentage of the produce has had a short field-to-fork journey. Along with supporting local farmers, it means the food is likely to contain more nutrients and have less packaging.

Independent shops often stock items which are made locally and aren’t available elsewhere: buy a dress by a fledgling designer and there is little chance of turning up to the office Christmas party wearing the same as someone else. No one can argue that nothing compares to the experience of physically touching merchandise. Many scientific studies even stated that touching things that we love before we buy them results in a physical effect like a euphoric state which leads many to associate shopping as a feel-good experience, hence the term “retail therapy”.

between seller and buyer, initiating trust and guarantee which can make most customers feel good about a purchase. Best of all, customers can take home their purchase the day they bought it, rather than having to wait for delivery when ordering online. There is also a risk with 48 % of e-commerce sites saying that they have a return rate of between 25 and 50% the main drivers being because they don’t fit and because they don’t like the quality. Rock Fall, the outdoor superstore tucked on Alfreton Trading Estate the second generation family business in Somercotes is proud to have opened its doors for the last 25 years. Come and see us for the largest range of outdoor products including walking boots at sizes 13+. Rock Fall, Wimsey Way, Alfreton Trading Estate, Somercotes, Derbyshire, DE55 4LS. Please see our advert on the back cover.

But beyond the physical effects of retail, shopping in a real store gives customers the opportunity to really inspect the merchandise they buy for quality. If one chooses to buy big items like furniture, customers can try out the product and see if they are comfortable with it. Brick and mortar shops also give this “adventure” kind of hype and elevate the sense of satisfaction in discovering rare finds or great bargains. Sometimes, talking directly to a store owner, a customer can negotiate to lower the price of a product. The human contact also creates a bond

Get Started With Family History

You know when a new series of Long Lost Families has returned to TV because of the loud sniffs and copious tears witnessed in our front room, as we watch people being reunited after years of separation. It’s one of several TV programmes designed to bring families - past and present, alive or dead together again. Others include Heir Hunters and Who Do You Think You Are? I’m addicted to them all!

A keen family historian since my teens, I can to some degree tell you who I think I am. Though I was born in the north of England, for generations my dad’s family were humble farm workers from Suffolk. My mum’s granddad was an illiterate cockney who delivered the marble staircase that sits in Madame Tussaud’s. My maternal grandma was born in Sheffield and lived to be 98 years old. Her parents’ marriage caused a family feud that resulted in grandma being placed in an orphanage at the age of three. There are sad stories that break your heart, and heart-warming tales that give hope and encouragement. But whatever your research reveals, you will find it hard to remain unmoved. So, if you have never done family history before, how do you get started? First, write down what you know already. List the full names, birthdays, marriage and death dates of people known to you. Ask relatives for information (particularly older ones who have been around longer), and refer to birth, marriage and death certificates if you have them to verify information and give you extra details such as place names. Next, visit websites devoted to family research, where you can look up information, order certificates and record your details. Some of the most popular include My Heritage, Ancestry and Find My Past.

16

In most cases there is a charge for their services, but there are various payment options and generally they are not too expensive. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosts a website called Family Search which offers free membership and exchange of information with other likeminded people. It is one of the largest databases in the world and is a great starting place for beginners. In addition, you can subscribe to websites (often for free) or purchase software to help you organise and manage your information. Family Tree Maker and Family Roots are two that I am familiar with. In addition to entering names and details, you can upload photos and videos and really start building up a picture of what you and your relatives are like. Once you start your research, you will become part of a community that is friendly, helpful and really feels like family. Good luck!

What is a Dive Centre doing in Nottingham? We couldn’t be further from the sea? Surprisingly enough Divemaster Scuba is one of the top certifying Dive centres in the UK. Celebrating 15 years in business Divemaster Scuba on Aspley lane in Nottingham has trained thousands of recreational divers and professional Instructors. But what is recreational scuba? Where can you go? What do you see?

It is surprising how many people try scuba diving and then do no more. It’s not for everyone but common fears seem to be misguided.

Midsummer’s Day

The longest day of the year comes all too soon in my opinion. Just three weeks after the arrival of summer on 1st June, the summer solstice (21st June) has passed and we have winter to look forward to again. It’s all to do with which calendar we follow. The astronomical calendar has summer starting in March when we put our clocks forward an hour, whereas the meteorological summer runs from June to August.

This mixture of calendars is indicative of the mixed-up celebration Midsummer’s Day has become. Like many other ancient traditions, it has its roots in pagan Britain but has been adopted and adapted to fit in with Christian beliefs.

Our ancestors - in awe of the power of the sun - celebrated the summer solstice by lighting bonfires to protect against evil spirits. They also built stone circles, set in alignment with the rising of the sun, such as those at Stonehenge. Midsummer’s Eve was a time for fairies (hence Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream) and flowers, which were placed under the pillow to induce important dreams about future loves. Christians celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist on Midsummer’s Day (24th June). Mystery plays, based on biblical events, are performed at this time of year, particularly in cathedral cities such as Chester, Lincoln and York.

National Fish & Chip Day

Despite competition from rival takeaway dishes, fish and chips continue to be the nation’s favourite fast food, with around 382 million portions being consumed each year!

Fried fish and chips were first served together around 1860 and ‘The Oldest Fish and Chip Shop in the World’ can be found in Yeadon near Leeds, which has been open since 1865. Cheap, readily accessible, hot and nutritious, fish and chips became a staple food among factory and mill workers in the industrial north, and continued as such during both World Wars, when it remained free of ration restrictions.

Some shops cook in oil, others in lard or dripping. Most areas offer mushy peas and curry sauce, but my (Northern) family were most disappointed when we arrived in Dover after a chip-free week in France to discover that gravy was not on the local menu! To celebrate the nation’s favourite dish, National Fish and Chip Day is being held on Friday 3rd June, which will bring together everyone involved in creating this iconic British food. Please visit www. nationalfishandchipday.org.uk for more details.

Though often criticised as unhealthy, fish and chips are actually a valuable source of protein, fibre, iron and vitamins, and when cooked properly contain only around 10% fat. How fish and chips are served can vary.
