I Did It For McMillan

Spotlight Magazine

Brighton Marathon Well training completed with ups and downs and an injury along the way that took me out for about 6 weeks race day had arrived. Training had gone well and surprised myself to how determined I was to line up on the start line as prepared as I possibly could. Even joining Slimming World at Sutton On Trent to lose a few extra pounds prior to the race to make it as easy as possible. The race village set up along Brighton beach was an amazing buzz with large screens showing the kids running, training and race advice and a severe heat weather warning. That’s all I needed, as I don’t usually run well in the heat and the weather is forecast for 26 degrees! Lining up in Preston Park the adrenalin kicks in with several nervous trips to the loo, the atmosphere is electric and now at the point of no backing out. Training had prepared me up to 18 miles and the one question I had, ‘was it enough?’ I kept telling my self have faith in the programme I’ve followed.

The second that thought goes through my mind my running watch and music runs out of battery, disaster, but keep going. Nearly at 22 miles I can start to see the other end of the promenade in the far distance, 4 miles to go, its in the bag, I now know I can do this. The crowds have got thicker again and everyone is cheering you on with your name on your t-shirt. This is amazing what an experience! The finish approaches I start to feel the adrenalin again I cross the line emotional and so proud I pushed myself to achieve this challenge as it was for an amazing cause. My final time was 4 hours 32 minutes which I was delighted with.

The run starts I go through the first 13 miles in 2.08 really pleased with that but more importantly I feel amazing, I don’t feel like Ive just run a half marathon so I stride on. 18 miles approach I start to think t6hats the furthest Ive been, am I going to hit that wall they all talk about? Still feeling great but very hot 21 miles approach and I actually start to believe I can do this. www.spotlightlocal.co.uk • 07399 571944 • dawn@spotlightlocal.co.uk

Wimbledon Fortnight Here We Go Again!

Wimbledon fortnight may be as British as summer rain but it originated across the English Channel. It derives from a French handball game called jeu de paume, or ‘game of the palm’ which was played in the 12th century in French Monasteries. Even the name derives from the French expression ‘tenez-vous prêt, which means ‘get ready’ and was called by the player about the serve the ball. The game was first recorded in English as ‘tenetz’, by the poet John Gower in 1399. The game was very popular with French royalty and it was they who introduced it to the rest of Europe. In 1414 Henry V received a gift of tennis balls from the future king of France, Charles Vll. Henry then initiated the tradition of aristocratic play in Britain.

played in an enclosed court.

His idea was a success and quickly caught on.

The rules were different though as the ball was allowed to bounce off a wall.

Lawn tennis became increasingly popular and the management of The AllEngland Croquet Club, at Wimbledon in London, was persuaded to set aside one of their lawns for the game.

Two inventions transformed the game: the first was the invention of the rubber ball, which could bounce on grass, and the second was the lawnmower and roller, which allowed a smooth outdoor surface to be created. By the mid 19th century tennis was being played regularly on grass, and at the same time more powerful racquets with longer handles were produced. The first lawn tennis club was founded in 1872 in Leamington, Warwickshire. In 1875 J. M. Heathcote asked his wife to cover a ball in flannel to make it easier to hit on wet grass.

In 1877 it changed its name to the All-England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club and organised the first Wimbledon Tennis Championships. There were 22 entrants, all men and the winner was Spencer Gore. A separate women’s championship ran for the first time in 1884 and was won by Maud Watson. Fun Fact Every year about 27,000 kilos of strawberries, 7,000 litres of cream, 60,000 pints of Pimms and 14,000 bottles of Champagne are consumed by spectators during Wimbledon.

Early players hit the balls with their bare hands but soon large gloves were preferred, and by the early 16th century shorthandled racquets had appeared. The first world tennis championships were held in the mid 18th century and was recognisably the game we know today,

Skin Deep

The Skin Is Our Largest Body Organ We Need To Take Care Of it! Our skin works quietly away, constantly renewing itself, shedding dead cells every 28 days. It also provides a barrier against the environment and keeps our insides where they should be! The skin on our face and hands is more exposed than other areas so it’s unsurprising that the combined effects of pollution, UV exposure and stress mean these are the places which show signs of aging first. There are thousands of product on the market that promise us all manner of miracles but do any of them work and is there anything we can really do to hold back time? What about facials? Having a facial is a luxurious but is it really doing anything? Beauticians say yes. Although the skin selfrenews, dead cells on the surface make it look dull. Facials help by physically removing dead cell buildup, to reveal younger fresher skin underneath. There are a bewildering array of facials to suit skin type, age and budget they all follow a similar pattern. The first step is a deep cleanse, followed by exfoliation then, depending on which treatment you’ve

16

agreed with your beautician it can include steaming, blackhead and whitehead extraction, massage, face mask and moisturiser. Variations include aromatherapy oils and acupressure. Your face should never feel sore or puffy when the treatment is over. You should look like a cleaner, shinier, healthier version of you!I’m up for that. Which skin technologies really work? Alpha-hydroxy acids These are present in many moisturisers. Their effectiveness depends on concentration. Between 8-15% they are a very effective skin smoother. At strengths of over 15% they are used in chemical peels which should only be carried out by a Dermatologist. Trans-retinoic acid It’s been proven to

reduce wrinkles, increase epidermal thickness and stimulate collagen deposition. It is effective in serum at very low concentrations but the effect is cumulative, so you will need to view it as a long-term strategy. It’s also very sensitive to sun light and breaks down on exposure, and can cause a mild skin reaction so should only be applied at night. Vitamin C serum This is a highly effective anti-oxidant and wrinklereducer but needs to be concentrated (10% or more) and stabilised in order to work. Keep it out of the light and use in the morning. It breaks down on exposure to sunlight so use it under a moisturiser with a high SPF. Use only stabilised, colourfree preparations. If there is a yellow tinge, it’s no longer effective.

Local Boys Scouted For Forest

Four local 10 year old boys, Henry Cobb, Riley Simpson, Lewis Reah and Tyler Broome (left to right) have been scouted by Nottingham Forest.

The boys got through to the Cup final at Collingham and won at the beginning of May where they were closely watched by one of the Nottingham Forest Scouts.

Riley, Lewis and Henry all attend Dunham Primary and Tyler attends Tuxford Primary Academy.

Following the final the four boys were invited on an eight week trial to see if their football skills are up to scratch before being accepted into the Nottingham Forest Academy.

The boys all live locally within our Spotlight area and have played together for the last three seasons at Ordsall Rangers in the U10’s division and are trained by a Tuxford Coach Mark Reah.

18

The four lads were delighted with this success and were pleased they could still play together but on a larger scale.

Local Football News

Spotlight Magazine

At 3-3 it was very end to end football with both teams having chances. Robin finally got a 4th with a ball from Matt Lowe racing Tom Bromhead in the box to complete his hat trick.

Robin Hood 4 Laxton 4 Laxton finished the season with a game full of goals. Robin Hood were first off the score sheet inside 5 minutes when a long throw found Matt Shepherd in the box smashing home against his old club.

With 10 minutes to go Laxton won a free kick about 25 yards out which Craig Jewitt perfectly put it in the top corner leaving the keeper with no chance. Laxton finished the season in 4th place.

Laxton who knew they needed a draw to finish 4th, quickly got a goal back when Joe Gibson scored his first of the game. Robin then made it 2-1 through Tom Bromhead scoring his first of 3. Before half time Laxton pulled another back to make it 2-2 which they though was enough to see them into half time with a draw.

Laxton Athletic are allways looking for new players to strengthen their team with pre season starting soon. If you are looking at ‘getting back into football’ or thinking of starting something new then why not give it a try.

However Robin Hood managed to sneak a goal with the last kick of the first half. After second half began Laxton played some good football creating chances and a well deserved goal from Will Hammilton which saw a great header beat the keeper.

Hear Hear

So you’ve decided that you need a hearing aid. But which one? Obviously the first thing to do is talk to an audiologist. They will assess the nature of your hearing loss, its cause, and its severity. Here are some issues you might wish to discuss with them. If you have severe hearing loss, you may need a larger hearing aid. Small hearing aids are easily damaged by earwax or draining ear fluid, so may not be the best choice for you if you are prone to excessive build-up of earwax, or to ear infections. If you want to be able to reduce some types of background noise and boost certain sound frequencies some smaller hearing aids may not be suitable.

phone, mp3 player, or laptop that are capable of sending a wireless signal, then you may want a hearing aid that is wireless compatible. If cosmetic appearance is important, let your audiologist know. They can help narrow the choices to what will best suit both your hearing needs and aesthetics. Consider your dexterity. If you have arthritis, you may find it difficult to insert and remove smaller hearing aids. Larger ones are easier to handle. Although some hearing aids are available on the NHS, top of the range hearing aids can be very expensive. Most private health care plans don’t cover them either, so your budget may be a factor in your decision.

This service is available to Gold and Double Gold members who are either (i) an owner-occupier; or (ii) a tenant aged over 30 where we have installed a smart meter in their property. All the light bulbs in the member’s home will be changed provided we have an LED equivalent, and the existing bulbs are safely and easily accessible. The typical value of £300-£500 is based on 39 LED bulbs at an average retail price of £8 plus a £100 charge for fitting. All light bulbs supplied and fitted by us are covered by a 36 month warranty. In addition, if a member notifies us at any time thereafter that a light bulb we have fitted is defective or has reached the end of its useful life, we will post them a replacement light bulb free of charge provided that (i) we have been supplying all their communication services continuously between the date the LED light bulbs were originally installed and the date we are notified that a replacement LED light bulb is required; (ii) their electricity service is being provided by us on the date the replacement is requested; (iii) there are no monies outstanding on the member’s account with us; and (iv) we have not received a termination notice from the member on any of the services we are supplying to them at that time. 15% quoted saving based on a typical household using 3,100 kWh of electricity, where 39 traditional light bulbs are changed to LEDs, with an average reduction of 45W per light bulb (eg. from 50W to 5W) and where each LED light bulb is used for an average of 45 minutes per day. If we fit new LED light bulbs in a member’s home and they cease to take any landline, broadband or mobile service from us within the following four years (which they were taking at any time after they requested our free light bulb replacement service), they will need to pay a contribution towards the cost of the LED bulbs we provided; the size of this contribution varies between £2 - £8 per bulb, depending on how long their bulbs have been installed. This offer can be withdrawn at any time. For full terms and conditions refer to the Utility Warehouse website.

Nelson’s Ashes Cricket Club The Nelson’s Ashes Cricket Club – Sutton on Trent Captain– (Midweek) Charley Turlukowski 07875792727

Harrison Chalkley the remainder, to achieve our second victory in the new season. On the 9th May we played away @ Newark R & M where we were well beaten by this confident team, by 9 wickets.

Captain– (Sundays) Simon Hempsall 07909092733

Although Warren Rhodes scored 47 runs we were unable to match their bowlers who bowled us out with 2 overs to spare.

It’s always nice to start a new season with some encouraging news that of our first four mid-week evening matches we have come away with two victories.

They then achieved the necessary runs with the loss of only one wicket taken by Charlie Turlukowski in his 3rd over of the evening.

Our first match of the season was on Wednesday 19th April away against Thoresby Collery @ Edwinstowe. Thoresby chose to bat first and scored 133 in the allotted overs, 5 wickets were taken, 2 by Harrison Chalkley for only 15 runs and Kit Garnet took another 3 for 26 runs.

The first Sunday friendly match was on 30th April away @ Bothamsall, we batted first and achieved a reasonable score of 152 all out.

Harrison also took 2 catches and father and son duo took a wicket as John Garnet caught one behind the wicket while Kit his son was bowling. Regretfully we could only score 93 in the 12 overs, with Harrison Chalkley achieving the highest score of the evening of 29. The first home match was on Wednesday 26th April against Newark Rugby Club who scored 99 runs for the loss of 5 wickets of which Harrison Chalkley took 3 of them. Our opening pair Charlie Turlukowski and Warren Rhodes comfortably scored 102 runs between them to achieve an encouraging home start to the season with a victory by 10 wickets.

Andrew rose scoring 37 and Jack Williams scoring 50. Bothamsall took control with their 3rd and 4th batsmen both scoring half centuries and hence won by 8 wickets in some 30 overs, with both teams enjoying an afternoon’s cricket. In the month of June we have 4 home fixtures at our ground in Weston, so please come along and enjoy an evening’s cricket. Tuesday 6th June against Thoresby Colliery and Tues 13th June against Newark Rugby Club. Wednesday 21st June against, The Wheatsheaf and Wed 28th June against Newark R & M. Bert Smith

Our next match was away @ The Wheatsheaf in Farnsfield who batted first and scored 117 for the loss of 4 wickets. Harrison Chalkley took 2 wickets and Charlie Turlukowski the other 2 wickets. Charlie Turlukowski and Stuart Widdowson opened up for Nelson Ashes and scored 110 between them, with James Barns and
