Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

What Is Thai Massage?

his has to be the number one question T on the tongues of all my new clients at the moment. So here we go, I’ll try to explain!

Thai massage is a full body massage, it happens on a comfy futon style floor mat (I’d say it’s probably comfier than my own bed!), you wear light loose clothing or similar to what you would wear to yoga or the gym. During the massage I use techniques with my thumbs, palms, elbows, knees, feet and forearms. THE DIFFERENT ‘STYLES’ IN THAI MASSAGE One is acupressure - pressure is applied to certain areas of the body to release muscular tension. Both eastern and western acupuncturists use needles to get the same effect. There is also myofacial release, which simply means moving the muscles and joints to stretch and release built up tension.

And finally there is good old-fashioned stretching - all stretches are ‘yoga’ based and predominantly they are trying to increase the range of motion & flexibility in the client. THAI MASSAGE HAS PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS TOO! This is a hard one to write down, as everyone is different! I can tell you that personally, it cured my insomnia faster than any sleeping tablets. It focuses the mind, reduces nervous tension and creates a deep sense of peace, leaving you feeling reenergized. WHO DOES IT BENEFIT? Thai massage can benefit anyone who sits or stands for too long. It also benefits Yoga and sports enthusiasts. James Sylvester

Game On

n the early to mid 1980s, the electronics market was taken by storm when popular Arcade games were taken to the small screen and made available to play at home. Atari launched Space Invaders on its TV games console, and Nintendo created its iconic handheld game Mario Brothers in what we then thought was state of the art technology. Little did we realise what sophisticated play lay ahead as technology developed and the gaming market expanded. Over the years, big names have come and gone as market leaders have fought it out to claim the top spot, so that supremacy in the games console market can now be claimed by just two brands – Sony with its PlayStation and Microsoft with its X-box, with the Nintendo Wii trailing in third place.

The keenest users are as passionate about their choice of gaming equipment as fans are about the football team they support. It’s known as Console Wars – the battle to establish gaming supremacy. To the unbiased onlooker, they each have their merits. With the new generation of consoles launched in November 2013, the X-box One sees a shift in direction to an all singing, all dancing media hub, offering the ability to view live TV, watch DVDs and stream videos via the Internet (for a price). As well as the facility for live picture chat similar to Skype, it also boasts built in software (called Kinect) which allows you to issue voice commands, which it obeys.

8

In contrast, Sony has opted to keep it simple with the PlayStation One. First and foremost it is designed to play video games, although it does include free access to the Internet to watch videos. It also comes with a handheld controller known as the Vita which allows you to continue with play whilst checking out what’s on TV. Fought with equal passion is the battle between console users and computer gamers about which platform offers the best gaming experience. PC enthusiasts claim membership of the PC Master Race, based primarily on their machines’ augmented graphical power brought about by upgrades or additions to the original hardware. Though the wars and battles amongst console users and PC players continue in real life as well as on screen, the question about where it’s all heading remains. Mobile gaming on tablets and phones can be just as immersive and fun – and these units are much more portable. In addition, low-priced apps are more attractive than expensive games which become obsolete with the launch of each new generation. Yes, the computer gaming market has come a long way since its explosion in the 1980s, and something tells me it has much further still to go!

“ Tricky Teenagers”

Mention to anyone that you have a teenager and it will elicit an immediate response of concern. Why? Because everybody knows that the teen years are ‘tricky’ to manage. Despite this, beyond the years of 0-5, there is very little support for parents and they are generally left to figure it all out in isolation. So what happens to our children during these years? Well, adolescence is the next stage of major developmental change. Not only does your child’s body change before their very eyes, but they also have to negotiate emotional, social and hormonal changes whilst making serious life choices about their future and whilst facing school and academic pressures. Statistics keep on showing that children in the UK are the unhappiest in the industrialised world - so be in no doubt that your child experiences extreme challenges during these years.

12

These are also the years where your child will begin to draw away from you and begin seeking support from other sources such as friends, teachers or even the internet! After years of research and experience I believe that you, as their parent, are the very best, most superior person to guide and protect your child and just as you were supported when they were between the ages of 0-5, information and practical strategies should be shared with you now, so that you are better equipped to support them through their transitional years. Why not join me at a free taster workshop happening on Friday 28th November. Places are limited. Visit here to register: tiny.cc//bondwithmyteen. Run Safe

A

s the nights get darker you may feel a little worried about venturing out. Here are some ideas to keep you safe: Wear white clothing with reflective panels and have reflective strips on your shoes to help you be seen. You could also wear a head torch. Face oncoming traffic when running on a road with no pavement, except on a blind corner when you should move to the opposite side. Or avoid roads with no pavements completely.

Vary your route as always running in the same place at the same time can make you vulnerable to assailants, and note road names as you pass. Choose a well lit route with an even surface.

Spotlight Magazine

Consider running with a friend or friends, this will keep you motivated and help you to stay safer. Always tell someone where you are going and approximately what time you will be back. Consider taking a mobile phone and personal alarm. You could also try free apps such as Glympse which allow you to share your location with people so they can track you. Don’t listen to music while you are running as you need to be able to hear oncoming cars, bikes and dogs. Or if you have one locally, you could try running on a floodlit athletics track. Solar Powered Backpacks!

Local entrepreneur creates a solar powered backpack that charges your gadgets on the move An enterprising local hiker has come up with a revolutionary backpack which will recharge gadgets such as mobile phones and tablets using solar power. Nottingham resident Matt Tandy, has designed the Hotwire 55 Solar Rechargeable Backpack, which is ideal for trekkers, campers and gap year travellers.

After a good few months of research and development, the Hotwire55 was born. There are other similar products on the market using solar power but this is specifically designed for people who may be away from home for a couple of days or more. Solar power charges the built in battery which transfers the charge via usb to your devices. With its 55+5 Litre capacity it is ideal for people going hiking, camping or travelling on a gap year who may take as many as 5 usb chargeable gadgets with them, including a phone, tablet, mp3 player, camera or portable speakers.

The idea came when Matt was away training for a half marathon in the wilds of Scotland and his phone battery died when he was due to call home and ‘check in’. He said “I started to think, how can we get around this problem?” “Modern smart phones are so much a part of our lives, but they do use up battery power fairly quickly”

Hotwire Bags is offering free delivery for spotlight readers with NG postcodes up until the new year, a saving of 10% on your purchase. You can find out more at: www.hotwire55.com

Egg Custard Tart

Who doesn’t love a delicate custard tart? Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Serves 6 Ingredients

150g / 6 oz plain flour Pinch of salt 75g /3oz butter or an equal mix of butter and lard, cubed 2 - 3 tbsp cold water 3 large eggs, plus 2 large egg yolks, lightly beaten 55 g / 2 oz caster sugar 570 m1 / 1 pint single / light cream 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional – makes it sweeter) 1/2 teaspoon whole nutmeg, freshly grated

For the filling In a large bowl beat the eggs and egg yolks lightly with the sugar. Warm the cream to a gentle simmer, then pour slowly over the beaten eggs, stirring constantly. Be careful not to overheat the cream or it will curdle the eggs. Add the vanilla extract if you are using. Pour the egg and cream mixture through a sieve into the pastry case. Sprinkle over the grated nutmeg. Place the tart onto a baking sheet and bake in the centre of the preheated oven for 10 minutes to brown the pastry. Lower the temperature to 180°C/Gas 4 and continue cooking for a further 20 minutes or until the custard is set.

Method Heat the oven to 220°C/Gas 7 For the pastry Place the flour, butter and salt into a large bowl. Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Be careful not to over-rub. Add the cold water to the mixture a small amount at a time, and using a round-bladed knife, stir until the dough binds together. Wrap the dough in clingfilm and chill for a minimum of 15 minutes, up to 30 minutes. Gently roll out the pastry to line a 1½”/4 cm deep, x 7”/18 cm base tart tin. Brush the pastry all over with a little of the beaten egg. This will help seal the pastry during cooking. Place the pastry in the fridge while you make the filling.

Pensions Freedom - 7 Mistakes to Avoid

he changes will certainly give you more T flexibility when it comes to accessing your pension pot. But despite how the changes are being portrayed by some people, there are serious dangers and pitfalls you need to be aware of.

Here are our top seven Pensions Freedoms mistakes to avoid: Mistake #1: Guidance isn’t the same as Advice The Government has announced that from April 2015 everyone approaching retirement will be given ‘Guidance’ on the options available to them. ‘Guidance’ is definitely a welcome addition to the sources of information available to you, but it isn’t the same as ‘Advice.’ Mistake #2: An Annuity might still be the right option The humble Annuity has had a tough time over the past few months, but for many people it will remain the right option. If you’re looking for a guaranteed income for the rest of your life, are in ill health, or want a relatively simple solution, an Annuity might still be right for you. Mistake #3: Transferring Final Salary pensions is almost a mistake The new freedoms don’t generally apply to Final Salary (also known as Defined Benefit) pensions. As a result there has been much debate around the merits of transferring Final Salary pensions to alternative arrangements, usually a Personal Pension, to take advantage of the new rules. Whilst there are isolated exceptions, usually when someone is close to retirement and in ill-health, transferring your Final Salary pension is almost always a bad idea. Mistake #4: Income Drawdown isn’t risk free As with any financial product Income Drawdown is right for some people, but not for others. We are concerned that wellmeaning pensioners, who want to leave lump sums to their dependents, will now decide to use Income Drawdown, exposing both their capital and income to more risk than they would usually be prepared to take.

18

Mistake #5: Don’t forget the tax The new rules will allow anyone over the age of 55 to take their entire pension pot as a lump sum. This might sound like an attractive idea to many people previously frustrated by the lack of flexibility when they retire. But taking the whole pension pot as a lump sum could prove to be a very expensive mistake if you forget about the tax you will have to pay. From April 2015 the first 25% of any money you take from the pot will be tax-free; the rest though is added to your other income and taxed at a rate of 20%, 40% or even 45%. Mistake #6: Don’t run out of cash We’ve saved the most important for last. Stealing a quote from that famous investor, Warren Buffett*, if you’re a pensioner or indeed close to retirement, rule number one must be: “Never run out of money”. And rule number two? “Never forget rule number one!” You might be tempted to take high levels of income from your pension, withdraw lump sums or to make choices which will help your dependents more than you. But when making any decisions the overriding consideration has to be the need to provide an income for the rest of your life and possibly your spouse too. Running out of money later in life, especially when State Benefits are being cut, really isn’t an option. *When asked about investing Mr Buffett actually said: “Rule No.1: Never lose money. Rule No.2: Never forget rule No.1.” We’re here to help The 7th mistake could easily be not taking advice when you retire. You pension pot is probably your largest asset after your house, taking your time to make decisions as well as using an Independent Financial Adviser is vital. We’re local to you and here to help. If you are close to retirement call one of our retirement experts today on 0115 933 8433

To Achieve Success - Take Action!

Do you want to achieve success in your business? - Then take action! I’m writing this blog because I get so frustrated when I talk to small business owners who tell me a great idea and then months later I find out they are still thinking the idea through and haven’t taken action! Marketing your services is key to raising awareness of your brand and engaging with potential customers. If you don’t take action and spend time procrastinating you’re customers will be going to your competitors. Here are three common excuses I often hear from business owners that haven’t taken action:

1. I haven’t got time - Getting and keeping clients has to be your number one priority. So you have to make time. Recruit someone to do your marketing or outsource to a marketing professional.

2. I am still working on it - spending days, weeks or even months trying to perfect that sales letter can mean that every day that passes your clients are going to your competitors. My suggestion is that it’s better to get started with something that is almost there and tweak it as you go along. 3. I don’t know what to do - Seek help. It doesn’t always have to cost money. Do a search online to find hints and tip on different aspects of your marketing, watch videos on Youtube and talk to other business owners. Search for free courses to help increase your skills. Dont’t make excuses anymore - take action! Remember you are ultimately responsible for your business success; there’s no point blaming anyone else. I know you can do it!

Is Your Car Ready For Winter?

ell it seems like winter is now upon us, W and we need to take extra care when driving in the cold and dark months ahead.

It is vitally important to be sure that our cars and tyres are in the best condition that they can be to keep us safe on the roads. Follow this winter checklist and help to keep you and your family safe. Battery and Charging System – Have the battery and charging system tested by a trained technician. A fully charged battery in good condition is required to start an engine in cold weather. Battery Cables and Terminals – Check the condition of the battery cables and terminals. Make sure all connections are secure and remove any corrosion from the terminals and posts. Engine Hoses –Visually inspect the cooling system hoses for leaks, cracks or loose clamps. Also, squeeze the hoses to check for any that may be brittle or excessively spongy feeling and in need of replacement. Tyre Type and Tread – In areas with heavy winter weather, changing to snow tyres on all four wheels will provide the best winter traction. All-season tyres will work well in light to moderate snow conditions, providing they have adequate tread depth. If any tyre has less than 3/32-inches of tread, it should be replaced. Uneven wear on the tires can indicate alignment, suspension or wheel balance problems that should be addressed to prevent further damage to the tires. Tire Pressure – Check tyre pressure more frequently during winter months. As the temperature drops, so will the pressures in the tyres—typically 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The proper tyre pressure levels can be found on a sticker located on the driver’s side door jamb. And, don’t forget to check the spare.

Air Filter – Check the engine’s air filter by holding it up to a 60-watt light bulb. If light can be seen through much of the filter, it is still clean enough to work effectively. However, if the light is blocked by most of the filter, replace it. Coolant Levels – Check the coolant level when the engine is cold. If the coolant level is low, add a 50/50 solution of coolant and water to maintain the necessary antifreeze capability. The level of antifreeze protection can be checked with an inexpensive tester available at any auto parts store. Lights – Check the operation of all headlights, taillights, emergency flashers, turn signals, brake lights and back-up lights. Replace any burnt out bulbs. Wiper Blades – Blades should completely clear the glass with each swipe. Replace blades that leave streaks or miss spots. In areas with snowy conditions, consider installing winter wiper blades that wrap the blade in a rubber boot to prevent ice and snow buildup that can prevent good contact between the rubber blade and the glass. Washer Fluid – Fill the windshield washer fluid reservoir with a cleaning solution that has antifreeze components for cold weather use. Brakes – Have brakes inspected by a certified technician to ensure all components are in good working order. Transmission, Brake and Power Steering Fluids – Check all fluids to ensure they are at or above the minimum safe levels. Christmas Tree Festival

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL IS NEARLY READY

West Bridgford’s community preparations for Christmas will step up a gear when the Methodist Church on Musters Road opens its third Christmas Tree Festival in December, with forty colourful trees displayed in the surroundings of its elegant worship space. Local schools and organisations are joining church groups to display a variety of designs based around the theme, ‘One Moment in Time’. There will be some stunning sights to enjoy, with something to please all ages and lots of information about some of the exciting provision and opportunities in the local area. Organiser, John Heard, says that he is delighted that once again so many people from the local area have thrown their creative energies into this project which aims to provide a positive focus for the town’s Christmas build up. The displays will be open for the first time on Saturday 6th December, between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm, with refreshments served throughout the day. On Sunday 7th December there will be a morning service at 10.30 am and the viewing will re-open between midday and 2.00 pm.

During the weekdays from Monday 8th December there will be opportunities for groups from local infant, junior and primary schools and parties of older residents and other groups to see the trees whilst at 7.00 pm on Tuesday 9th December there will be free admission to a Christmas Concert by the BeVox Community Choir. Because of demand, the trees will be available again for viewing over the weekend of Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th December, between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm each day, when once again there will be plenty of home made refreshments; morning coffee, hot lunches and afternoon teas. The Sunday service at 10.30 am will feature many favourite carols and we offer a warm invitation to come and sing with us in the attractive surroundings. The Minister at West Bridgford Methodist Church, Revd. Dr Paul Hill, is hoping that the attendance this year will break previous records and once again show how the local church can provide a valuable focus for drawing people together, particularly as visitors enjoy live music performances whilst viewing the decorated trees.
