Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor
in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Benefits of a Multifuel Stove
Multifuel stoves are fast becoming the new trend. With Gas and Electric prices’ shooting up it is the new alternative source of heat. There are many makes and models and this is fast becoming a very competitive market. A good multifuel stove consists of a steel or cast iron body with usually cast iron doors. A Steel stove will heat up quicker but cool down faster. Cast iron will take longer to heat up but will retain the heat for a while after the fire has gone out. You will generally need more room around it for the air to circulate than a steel stove would, if there is limited circulation around a cast iron stove it could crack. Most small fires will burn for 2 - 4 hours on wood depending on hardwood or softwood and how well it is seasoned. It will burn longer on smokeless fuel between 6 - 12 hours, depending on the load size and fuel quality. A few models have a tertiary air supply which makes the stove much more efficient as it burns off any excessive gasses in the stove so there fewer emissions out of the chimney. A lot of areas are now smoke exempt.
Over the last few years many modifications have been made to multifuel stoves making them easier to use, more modern and ultimately much more efficient. Multifuel stoves come complete with ash pan and grate. Some have superior external riddling grates and some are pretty basic or don’t riddle at all. Wood burning stoves are carbon neutral; it only gives off as much carbon as the wood has taken in while it has been growing. There are many different types of wood you can burn. Most need at least two winters outside to the elements and then six months under cover where the wind can still get in but the rain can’t to dry out. Wood that is seasoned correctly will give no smoke emissions out of the chimney, making it better for the environment. Hardwoods take longer to season up to three to four years. Ash can be burnt as soon as it is felled. Stoves that are wood burning only don’t usually come with a grate or ash pan. This is because wood burns best in its own ash and burns from
6
the top down, With smokeless coal you need a grate to get air under the coal to make it burn. For the best quality logs and coal contact Nottinghamshire Logs via their website: www nottinghamshirelogs.com. If you have a chimney with a stack and a pot fitting of a stove is pretty straight forward, this has to be carried out by a Hetas registered engineer. You will need to get your chimney swept and tested; if you chimney fails a smoke test then it will need to be lined before a stove is fitted. A lot of wood burning and multifuel stoves can now run central heating or domestic hot water boilers. They can be linked into existing systems. Once you have felt the warmth and comfort a real fire gives you will be impressed. Wood burning and multifuel stoves are a sealed unit so they don’t burn as much fuel as an open fire and are about three times more efficient. This is because with an open fire you have all the heat going up the chimney and it is constantly pulling cold air from into the room. If you are unsure when purchasing a stove you need to go to a reputable dealer who is well established and Hetas registered to ensure you get all the correct information. A real fire cannot be beaten it is a different kind of warmth that seems to spread around the house not just in the room where the fire is. When purchasing a fire you need to make sure you get the correct size for the room that it is going in. your local dealer will be able to help you with this if you have your room sizes, height of ceilings and approximate age of property. They will also be able to advise you on materials to use around your fire and all current building regulations regarding multifuel and wood burning stoves. Most companies now offer free site surveys to check suitability of installation and have engineers who can knock out fireplace openings and lay hearths etc. For advice and a free quote for purchase and installation of your new multi-fuel stove, call Adrian at www.nottinghamstoves.com

Smile With Confidence
Could cosmetic dentistry help?
Our smile is one of the first things that people notice about us, so a mouth full of stained, chipped or crooked teeth can really affect our confidence. Cosmetic dentistry ranges from small changes, such as crowning a chipped tooth, to whole-mouth makeovers. Common procedures include: Bleaching Teeth can be stained by smoking, some medications and certain food and drink. Most stains can be removed by regular scale and polish appointments, but others are harder to shift. Also, teeth naturally differ in colour, so some people will have naturally whiter teeth than others. Bleaching is usually done over the course of a few weeks, although laser bleaching can give you noticeable results, in less time. The bleaching product is painted onto your teeth, and activated by the laser. Teeth can sometimes feel a little more sensitive during treatment and gums can be a bit sore, but results can be pretty dramatic, with teeth up to six shades whiter. The effect can last for up to three years. Straightening
Teeth-straightening is a gradual process and usually takes one to two years. The effect is pretty permanent, although teeth may move slightly as the years go by. Replacing missing teeth There are different ways to replace missing teeth. The best choice usually depends on how many teeth are missing, where the gap is, and what condition your other teeth are in. You could opt for a partial denture, which can be removed. Alternatively, a bridge can be fixed onto remaining teeth, or onto implants (artificial roots). Is it for you? Only you can decide whether you want to have work done and if so, how far to go. We’ve all seen the ‘Hollywood smiles’ – those too white, too straight, too perfect sets of teeth that just look a bit false. Sometimes it’s the minor imperfections that make us who we are. Would Claudia Schiffer have been as distinctive if she’d had her teeth ‘fixed’? For more information about cosmetic dentistry, visit www.dentalhealth.org or call the dental helpline on 01788 539780. By Kate Duggan
Another common cosmetic procedure is straightening or moving teeth slightly. This is usually done with orthodontic braces. If you have an image of a spotty teen with metal train tracks, you might be surprised to find out that more and more adults are getting them, and many of today’s braces are a world away from the unsightly ones of a few years ago. ‘Invisible braces’, for example, are clear plastic moulds that fit over your teeth. They’re not very noticeable and can be taken out for eating and brushing. They do need changing every few weeks, to fit your changing bite, so can work out more expensive than traditional fixed braces.

A Good Read
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
If you prefer to read a book before seeing the film adaptation then this is your chance to discover one of next summer’s highly anticipated films.
Continuing with the theme of personal relationships in the face of illness comes The Fault in Our Stars the hugely successful teen novel exploring the impact of teenage cancer on the lives of two individuals. 16 year old Hazel has cancer and is, reluctantly, convinced by her parents to attend a support group for others in her situation.
26 year old Lou Clark still lives with her parents in the quiet market town she grew up in. Almost deserted in the winter the town’s one draw is an old castle and when we meet Lou she works in the local tea shop serving the coach loads of tourists who come to visit. With a quirky dress sense Lou never really feels as if she fits in and as a teenager longed to travel the world. However circumstances meant that she could never bring herself to leave. After losing her job she reluctantly takes a job caring for Will, a young quadriplegic man injured in a motorcycle accident several years earlier. She is told the job is just for 6 months and despite a rough start she decides to stick it out and soon an unlikely bond develops between Lou and Will. A romantic novel this also deals with the sensitive issue of disability and the descriptions of Will’s day to day life are well written with brutal honesty and little sensationalism. Things take a darker turn when Lou learns the reason why her contract is only to be for 6 months and she sets out to bring Will new experiences and remind him of the simple joys of life: not easy for a wheelchair bound man whose ideal way to pass the time before his accident was skydiving or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. As a reader you are drawn into the lives of these characters and the development of their relationship is believable. In the hands of the wrong writer this plot line could turn out to be very twee and cliché but Moyes does not fall into this trap. The resulting novel is engaging, difficult to put down and will lead you to appreciate the small wonders of life.
10
Amongst the other patients there is Augustus, a 17 year old boy who lost a leg to cancer. The two begin talking and agree to read each other’s favourite books. Hazel’s book is a novel by a Dutch writer about a young girl with cancer: Hazel sees many parallels to her own life here. Augustus is angry after reading the book and discovering that it doesn’t have a nicely wrapped up ending. There is no conclusion, no neat package, no ending: happy or otherwise. Of course life has an ending, but it often isn’t happy or neatly wrapped up. Hazel becomes aware of her fears about getting close to others. She is afraid that when she dies it will hurt them, and this naturally affects her relationship with Augustus. This moving novel deals with issues that most of its teen readers won’t have yet faced in their lives. As a teenager you often feel immortal. You feel as if life is stretching out ahead of you and death is the furthest from your mind. Hazel and Augustus, along with the other young people at the support group view life differently. There is no expectation that everyone will make it to the next meeting. No one is immortal. With a huge teenage following and a successful movie adaptation this novel stays with you long after the closing paragraph. By Willow Coby

Nottingham Named “Home Of Sport”
Nottingham has been announced as England’s official Home of Sport, following a national campaign by tourism board VisitEngland, in a bid to find England’s top sporting destination. Having received more nominations than any other English destination, Nottingham was the ‘People’s Choice’ going into the public vote, and then went on to be a clear winner with 38% of the overall vote.
James Berresford, VisitEngland’s Chief Executive, says: “Live sporting events are great drivers for tourism, worth £3.2 billion to the sector. With this accolade, Nottingham has been put firmly on the tourist trail as a must-visit destination for any sports fan. As the site of our glorious Ashes win this summer, the setting for the recently released and critically acclaimed I Believe in Miracles film and the home to the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham offers visitors plenty to see and do.” Jennifer Spencer, Chief Executive of Experience Nottinghamshire, said: “We’re over the moon to have been named England’s official home of sport! This is a fantastic coup for Nottingham, and a wonderful reflection of the diverse sporting offer we have here – from legendary sporting heroes such as Brian Clough and Torvil & Dean, to world class sporting facilities such as Trent Bridge and top spectator and participant events all year round. It’s been a real joint effort, so thank you to all the partners who got behind the campaign here in Nottingham, including Nottingham City Council, Sport Nottinghamshire, sport venues and clubs, and of course our high profile sports ambassadors. We’re looking forward to welcoming even more sports lovers to Nottingham as a result of this achievement.”
events for both local people and for visitors to the area. I’m particularly pleased that we were the ‘people’s choice’ as it shows how proud the people of Nottingham are of their city’s sporting achievements.”
Simon Starr, Director of Sport Nottinghamshire, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Nottingham has been recognised as England’s Home of Sport. We are blessed with fantastic and iconic facilities, great teams, great coaches and some amazing athletes but more than that, Nottingham is a city that lives and breathes its sport. The title is well deserved and I hope it will help to inspire even more people in Nottingham to lead healthy and active lives” Dan Tilley, Director of Sport at University of Nottingham, said: “What a fabulous accolade for the city, which reflects the fantastic role that sport plays within our community whether that be through the professional clubs such as Forest, County or the Panthers; through the vast array of semi-professional and community clubs. As a consequence of the iconic venues and outstanding facilities such as Trent Bridge, the National Watersports Centre and Harvey Hadden; or through the delivery by our two leading sporting universities and local schools and colleges. The University of Nottingham is currently building a brand new £40m Sports Centre which will hopefully further enhance our sporting status and will help us continue to attract high profile events such as the European Archery Championships in 2016.”
Councillor Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Nottingham City Council, said: “Nottingham is a very worthy winner of this accolade, being voted England’s Home of Sport 2015. Our city offers world-class sporting facilities and

How To Choose A Tradesman
Many years ago, the house I lived in developed a small wet patch in the dining room. We called out two plumbers to give us a quote. The first told us the drive needed digging up and that the total repair cost would run into hundreds of pounds. The second fiddled around with a pipe in the kitchen and fixed the leak in minutes for £35.
So, if you need a tap fixing, the stairs and landing decorating or the roof patching up, how do you avoid the cowboys and find an honest trader who will provide a good, reliable service at a fair price? Personal recommendation is always the best way forward. If you have family, friends or neighbours who have recently had work done and are happy with the results, get details and give the tradesperson a call. Alternatively, ask someone you have previously used. They often know others in related trades. But if those you know and trust can’t help, where do you look? Sticking a pin in the local business directory is not the solution! Trading Standards and your Local Authority might be able to supply you with a list of trades people who have undergone vetting procedures and complied with legislation. In addition, check out businesses registered with TrustMark, a not-for-profit scheme licensed by the government and supported by consumer protection groups. Firms displaying the TrustMark logo have had their technical skills, quality of work and financial status checked and have also signed up to a
14
code of practice that includes insurance, health and safety and good customer care. Visit trustmark.org.uk to find TrustMark approved tradespeople within 50 miles of your postcode. There are also other websites around, designed to pair you up with suitable trades people in your local area. Businesses normally pay to have their services listed, so there’s no guarantee as to the quality of work, though the sites do include testimonials from past customers. A couple I visited were RatedPeople and mybuilder.com. I found the latter site particularly easy to use. When making your choice of tradesperson, ensure you adhere to the following best practice: Set out a detailed, clear brief and get at least three written quotes. Make sure you are comparing like with like. Ask for a landline phone number as well as a mobile number. Ask for references and if appropriate visit previous jobs or look at photos of past work. Only pay for work that has been done and not by advance payments, though it is reasonable to be asked to pay a fair percentage of any materials bought in advance. Check that any warranty offered is insurancebacked.

Remembrance Day
Following the end of the First World War, my grandfather travelled to France and spent several months burying the dead. This experience affected him forever. The Great War started in 1914, and after four years of bitter fighting the guns of Europe finally fell silent at 11am on 11th November 1918 – six hours after the armistice was signed in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiegne, France. The following year, King George V sent out a proclamation requesting that a 2 minute silence be held, so “the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead”. Since that first Armistice Day in 1919, a two minute silence has been observed yearly at war memorials and other public places at 11am on
the eleventh day of the eleventh month, and on the second Sunday of November. After the end of the Second World War, Armistice Day became known as Remembrance Day, to include those who had fallen in WWII and other conflicts. Twelve thousand British servicemen and women have been killed or injured since 1945. In the words of the poet Robert Binyon: “They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.”

Nottinghamshire’s Best Bar
Pubs, bars and clubs across the county celebrated as the winners of Nottinghamshire Best Bar None were announced at an exclusive awards evening. A total of 14 winners were announced during the evening, which was held at the Village Hotel in Chilwell.
individual schemes across the country. Due to the way Best Bar None encourages licensees to continually improve their standards of operation, some areas that operate schemes have shown impressive reductions in alcohol-related crime and disorder.
All of the venues eligible for an award had been thorough a rigorous assessment process of their operating policies and procedures to prove that they are worthy of being Nottinghamshire Best Bar None accredited.
The scheme in Nottinghamshire is the country’s first county-wide scheme. It has been funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner for three years, with this first year also being co-funded by Nottinghamshire County Council.
Nottinghamshire’s residents and visitors were asked to vote for their favourite places to visit in the county from those that had made the mark, and nearly 3,500 votes were cast.
PCC Paddy Tipping said: “Licensed venues play a significant role in our local economies and I want people to enjoy themselves and have a great night out, but it’s important that alcohol is both sold and consumed as safely as possible.
The winners of this public vote were:
Best Village Venue – The Lion, Farnsfield Best Suburban Independent Venue – The Junction, Sutton in Ashfield Best Suburban Chain Venue – The Bold Forester, Mansfield Best Town Centre Independent Venue – andwhynot, Mansfield Best Town Centre Chain Venue – The Stag and Pheasant, Mansfield Best Late Night Venue – The Late Lounge, Mansfield A panel of independent judges with expertise in the field of licensing also chose a winner within each council borough, who are listed below. From these winners, the overall county-wide Best Bar None winner was selected, too.
Best Bar None, in encouraging licensees to act responsibly and take pride in their premises, makes it a win win situation as local people and visitors benefit from wellrun and safe pubs, clubs and bars to visit, encouraging increased custom.”
Ashfield – Half Moon, Hucknall Bassetlaw – The Ashley Hotel, Worksop Broxtowe – The Sherwin Arms, Bramcote Gedling – The Ernehale, Arnold Mansfield – Rush Late Bar, Mansfield Newark & Sherwood – The Grove Inn, Newark Rushcliffe – The Country Cottage Hotel, Ruddington The overall winner of Nottinghamshire’s Best Bar None scheme for 2015 was selected as The Ashley Hotel, Worksop. Bonfires
November seems a good month to talk about bonfires. I’m not actually a huge fan of the garden bonfire; I think that generally there are better ways of disposing of garden waste. Most green waste, such as leaves or grass can be recycled. Woody waste can be shredded and either composted or used as mulch, though it may be more cost-effective to hire a shredder rather than buy one outright if your garden is small. But if wood is diseased a bonfire may be the best way to deal with it. So what are the rules regarding garden bonfires?
Rather surprisingly there are no specific laws against having a bonfire, or when you can have one. There may be local by-laws though: laws made by a local authority and applicable only in a defined geographical area. Phone your council or check their website for further information. If you rent a property you’ll need to check under your tenancy agreement too, in order to find out whether bonfires are permitted. Laws about bonfires are generally concerned with their potential nuisance value. So you can’t burn plastics, or painted household waste which may produce toxic fumes or thick smoke harmful to asthma sufferers. Also, the Highways Act states that it is an offence to light a bonfire near a road if the drifting smoke may cause a traffic hazard. Mostly though bonfires are all about common sense. The smoke and smell from a fire might

annoy your neighbours, especially if it prevents them from opening their windows or hanging out their washing. It’s polite to warn your neighbours beforehand; they may have an outdoor party planned or want to spend the afternoon pottering in their garden. Light your bonfire at a time least likely to cause a nuisance – remember on a warm sunny day people are more likely to be out in their garden, enjoying it. Only burn dry material because damp material creates a lot of smoke. The other issue with bonfires is, of course, safety. Bonfire Safety Check-list Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees Don’t build it too large and make sure it’s stable, so it won’t collapse outwards or to one side. Check the bonfire for hibernating wildlife. Don’t use petrol or paraffin to start the fire as these accelerate the flames and may cause the fire to burn out of control. Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy—just in case Don’t leave the fire unattended. Keep small children and pets out of the way. Once the fire has died down, pour water over the embers to stop them re-igniting. By Rachel Leverton

Drinking Responsibly
As we head towards the festive season there’s a renewed emphasis on the dangers of drink driving. In England and Wales, the alcohol limit for drivers is 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath or 107 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of urine. The punishment for being over the legal alcohol limit when driving is a ban for at least 12 months, and a fine of up to £5,000. Offenders may also be given between three and eleven penalty points.
There is also a possibility of imprisonment for up to six months. Those caught drink driving more than once in a 10 year period; will get a driving ban of at least three years
It’s not easy to ensure you remain under the limit if you drink alcohol as a variety of factors such as, weight and metabolism can influence results. Even small amounts of alcohol can influence driving, reactions may be slower, vision blurred and it can be more difficult to process information for example. All of these put you at risk. The advice for avoiding drink driving includes using designated drivers who drink soft drinks or zero alcohol varieties only. Choose nights out that don’t include drinking and use public transport or taxis. By Susan Brookes-Morris
