Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor
in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A Good Read
‘The Snowman’ by Jo Nesbø A bit of a different novel this month and a genre that is growing in popularity these days: Nordic noir. ‘The Snowman’ is about as far from Miss Marple as you can get and will appeal to fans of Stig Larsson’s ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’. Nesbø is the creator of Harry Hole, an ex-alcoholic detective from Oslo. Hole became famous when he was sent to Australia to help solve the murder of a Norwegian citizen. This sealed his reputation upon his return to Norway: a country lacking in serial killers. Until the events of ‘The Snowman’. In this, the seventh Harry Hole book, women start to go missing from the Oslo area. They all have one thing in common: they are all married. In each case there doesn’t seem to be any reason why these women would go missing. Marital status alone is not enough to make a connection but in these snowy regions of Northern Europe there is one more similarity between the cases. In each case a snowman appears at the murder scene. This is an engrossing novel which draws you, not only into the case, but into Hole’s life in the capital of Norway. As in all of Nesbø’s novels, the city of Oslo and the surrounding areas come to life almost as if they were characters in their own right. Hole is far from a hero, his character flaws are ever present and conflict between him and his colleagues is a common theme. As with many novels in this genre life is shown, warts and
6
all, and it makes for a novel that is dark, bleak, alien, and yet one you will struggle to put down. ‘Titanic: An Edwardian Girl’s Diary 1912’ by Ellen Emerson White There can be very few adults who have not heard of the sinking of the Titanic on its maiden voyage in 1912 and for young readers this novel offers an introduction to this key historical event which changed the safety measures on ships for ever. The ‘My Story’ books are diaries which help to teach children of key events in British history. In this novel 12-year-old Margaret Anne Brady is an orphan who dreams of escaping her life. Following the death of her father five years earlier she was left at the orphanage by her older brother as he had to go to America to seek a new life and could not take her with him. Ever since then she has dreamed of being reunited with him. So she cannot believe her luck when she is chosen to accompany wealthy American Mrs Carstairs across the Atlantic. Finally, she can be reunited with her brother. But their passage is booked on The RMS Titanic. This floating microcosm of all layers of British society is about to meet its demise and change the lives of many, including Margaret. With vivid descriptions of life aboard the ship, with its crisp white tablecloths, the reader is transported back to the Edwardian era where she learns that class is everything and decides if you live or die. The ‘C’ Word I’m going to say the ‘C’ word...it’s very naughty of me I know. But the children are back in school so won’t hear me...here goes...forgive me...Christmas! Before you all pelt me with clay flowerpots just hear me out. A little advance planning now and when skies are dark and the north wind blows you’ll reap the benefits of my advice, I promise. Everyone knows about potted hyacinths, ubiquitous during the festive period. They smell heavenly but let’s face it everyone has them and they’re a bit old-hat. I have the answer: scented narcissi. To my mind they’re more elegant and fit better into contemporary homes.
with drainage holes (so there’s no danger of water-logging) and fill it with soil-less multipurpose compost. I cram as many bulbs in as I can, leaving just the pointy bit of the bulb protruding. Then I water them and keep them in a cool dark place until the flower shoots are visible. Within a fortnight of bringing them into a warm room they will flower. Have some split green canes on hand with some twine so if the stems need support you can provide it. Then just sniff and enjoy. By Rachel Leverton
The two varieties I grow are Paper White, which is my favourite, because it’s white and so seems to fit in with the whole Christmas theme, and Grand Soleil d’Or for when I need a sunnier, yellow bloom. Both varieties have tiny flowers, clustered at the top of straight, long stems and, if planted now they will be in flower before Christmas. I tend to plant a few pots now (they’re great as economical gifts for those hard-to-buy-for elderly relatives) plus a pot per week for myself between now and the end of October so I can have the luxury of scented bulbs continuously in flower for a couple of months during the bleak winter period. You need to buy ‘prepared’ bulbs which have been heattreated to make them flower before Christmas. I tend to plant one variety per pot because I think that provides more impact but you can plant to suit your own tastes. I use a nice 15cm / 6 inch pot

Game Pie
Preparation time: 35 minutes + cooling Cooking time: Approximately 2 hours Serves 6 Ingredients 2 tbsp sunflower oil 800g/ 1lb 12oz boneless mixed game (rabbit, venison, pheasant etc), cut into 2.5cm / 1 inch cubes 225g / 8oz shallots, peeled and halved 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 100g / 3.5oz smoked bacon lardons 175g / 6oz carrots, chopped 2 sticks celery, roughly chopped 2 tbsp flour, plus extra for dusting 300ml / 10fl oz chicken stock 200ml / 7fl oz red wine 2 tbsp redcurrant jelly Few sprigs of fresh thyme 500g / 1lb 2oz pack puff pastry Salt and pepper Beaten egg to glaze Method Heat half the oil in a large saucepan. Fry the game cubes in batches until brown. Remove the game to a plate and add the remaining oil to the pan, fry the shallots, garlic, lardons, carrots and celery for 10 minutes, stirring until lightly golden in colour.
10
Add the flour to the pan and cook for one minute, then gradually stir in the stock, followed by the red wine, then the redcurrant jelly, and bring to the boil. Return the meat to the pan and add the thyme. Season with salt and pepper, cover and simmer gently for about an hour, until the meat is tender. Preheat the oven to 220C / Gas mark 7. Transfer the game casserole to a large pie dish. Place a pie funnel (if using) in the centre and dampen the rim of the dish with water. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to about 5cm / 2 inches wider then the dish. Cut a 2.5cm / 1 inch strip of pastry from the outer edge, brush with water and use to line the rim of the dish. Then brush the pastry rim with water and top with the pastry lid. Seal, trim and crimp the pastry edges, and decorate the top of the pie with pastry trimmings. Glaze the pie with the beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until the pastry is risen and golden.

Stretch It OUT
Stiffness, inflexibility, aches and pains… They may seem like an inevitable part of aging, particularly if you have a desk job. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Other equipment, such as a pilates ball, will usually be provided by the instructor, although you may want to invest in one to practice on at home.
Exercises such as pilates and yoga can really help to increase strength and flexibility. Physiotherapist and pilates instructor Sue Holmes explains, “Pilates and yoga are both fabulous exercise regimes to help increase the flexibility of your muscles.
You should be able to find a class that specifically caters for beginners, and there are also several types of yoga classes available to choose from, including ashtanga, hatha and power yoga.
Both disciplines benefit you by actively working the muscles into an end range stretch, but yoga tends to encourage you to hold the positions for longer than pilates would. A weekly workout is a great way to enhance your joint and muscle range of movement, which would not be gained by usual day-to-day activity alone.” Key benefits of pilates and yoga include: Improving and maintaining flexibility Promoting better posture Easing lower-back pain Increasing the strength of core muscles Improving balance and co-ordination Reducing stress Pilates and yoga can also help to realign any imbalances. We often favour one side of our body and over time this can limit our range of movement. For example, if you injure your leg, you may adjust your walk so that you’re favouring your good leg.
Do choose your instructor wisely. It can be quite easy to hurt your back when exercising, if your instructor doesn’t guide you correctly. Make sure your instructor is fully qualified and, if possible, ask current students for their opinions of the class, before you start. Don’t be put off by the images of size 10 twenty-somethings pulling impossible looking moves. You’ll find all ages, shapes and abilities in a class, and you won’t be expected to tie yourself in knots or push yourself past the point you’re comfortable with. Most people are far too busy trying to figure their own stretches out – they’re not interested in whether you have perfected your downward dog or not. By Kate Duggan
Before long, this can become habit and lead to one side becoming weaker than the other. Pilates and yoga can alert you to these types of imbalances, and help you to correct them. Pilates and yoga are suitable for most people, whatever their age or level of fitness. The focus is on low-impact, slow movements. You’ll need comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily, and an exercise mat.

School Woes
While many children run through the classroom door each day, with barely a backwards glance, others, sadly, do not find the school experience such a happy one. The occasional grumble is rarely anything to worry about, but if your child frequently seems unhappy, you may need to intervene. Early intervention can help to avoid long-term issues, and your child is more likely to develop a love of learning if they enjoy the whole school experience. There are a range of reasons your child may dread going to school, from bullying, to being shy or particularly sensitive to noisy situations. They may simply not like their teacher, or struggle with being separated from you. Try to figure out exactly what’s bothering your child, and if there’s anything you can easily do to fix it. Would arranging some play dates help them to make friends? Could changing to packed lunches ease their dread of dinner time? Do they need more quality one-on-one time with you, to help them feel more secure when you’re not together? It isn’t always easy to get to the bottom of a child’s reluctance to walk through the
14
school gates. Sometimes they can’t explain what it is that makes them scared, or they don’t feel able to tell you. But do persevere. Try to pick a neutral time to discuss it, and take it gently. Raise the subject when they’re feeling relaxed and up for talking, ie not right after school, when they’re tired, or when they want to just go and play. If your child is older, they may find it easier to open up to another family member or family friend, who isn’t involved in making them go to the place they dread every day. Once you have a better idea of what the problem is, book a time to speak to your child’s teacher, and, if needs be, the headteacher. They will be well used to dealing with a wide range of issues, from bullying to a lack of confidence, and should work with you to ease any problems. Do speak to your child about this first however, as you going into school could be exactly what they’re dreading and may make them clam up next time there’s a problem. The website www.bullying.co.uk has a wealth of advice for parents whose child is being bullied, including how to approach the school and how to discuss it with your child.

Is Your Cat 7 Years Or Older?
Just like us humans, cats can experience health problems as they get older as well as symptoms that we associate with old age. There are a number of issues that can begin to affect cats as they get older. Their senses of smell, taste, sight and hearing may all fail somewhat while their body temperature may become lower, making them more sensitive to extremes in the climate. Their metabolism may decrease and with it their appetite which could see a loss of weight and they could experience a reduction in their bowel function, with constipation and incontinence being a side issue of these. They can also experience problems with their digestive system as well as weakened bones and claws. Heart problems are one of the most common issues when cat get older. As their hearts age, it no longer pumps the blood effectively and a heart murmur is an early sign of this. Kidney or renal disease is a regular problem too, as well as a lack of flexibility, dental problems and respiratory infections. The Vet Nottingham in Wollaton, offers full a senior cat health check, including urine tests and blood pressure reading, for only £10.99.
One of our lovely vet nurse’s, Stacey, has completed the ISFM Certificate in Feline Nursing so we are running senior cat clinics, to check that your feline friend is healthy, happy and in tip-top condition. The full health check with Stacey will include: • Preventative healthcare advice • Checking for common conditions such as arthritis • Checking blood pressure • Appropriate life stage diet advice • Any behavioural changes • Advising on blood and urine samples to identify and address problems before they become serious • Discussing flea and worming • Vaccination status. These consults only cost £10.99 (price includes basic urine test and blood pressure reading). About our veterinary nurse Stacey Stacey is our cat expert at The Vet Nottingham. With three years of experience and three spoilt cats of her own, Stacey understands all things feline and has recently completed the ISFM certificate in feline nursing. This certificate has developed and furthered her knowledge in all areas of feline nursing including how to reduce and prevent stress both at home and within the practice. If you are interested, please call us on 01158 969 984 or email us at nottingham@ thevet.co.uk, so we can arrange a time for you to see Stacey.

National Friendship Month
Where would we be without friends? It’s said that friends make the good times better, and the bad times bearable. This month, it’s time to celebrate our friendships, as September is National Friendship Month. In the UK, the month is attributed to The Oddfellows, one of the largest and oldest friendly societies. For them, it’s ‘an annual campaign to bring communities together and highlight the importance of friendships.’ Research from the University of North Carolina shows that spending time with friends can make us happier and healthier. Whilst many feel it’s preferable to be with those who are positive, supportive and share good news, some believe that having close friends who they can have a good moan to and get things off their chest with is also beneficial. Groups tend to find their own norms over time in terms of what they talk about, what activities they do and how they behave. You may have heard the expressions ’Friends are the family you choose’, or ‘You can’t choose your family but you can choose your friends’ and it’s true that some have tighter bonds with friends than family members.
friends every seven years, it’s good to keep an eye out for new friends as well as celebrate long standing relationships. For some, connections will last decades but others will be for just a certain stage of a person’s life. Some talk about outgrowing their friends or moving away from damaging peer groups for example and couples divorcing can often cause a split in friendship groups. Oddfellows are helping people to build new friendships during September, by organising a range of special activities to complement their annual programme. These include walks, tea dances and craft workshops with the theme of bringing people of all ages together over a simple cuppa. You can find details at: https://www. oddfellows.co.uk/Events/FriendshipMonth. Or you could mark the month in your own special way. Plan a coffee morning, buy your friends a gift or just take time to tell them how much they mean to you. You could also reconnect with long lost pals. Social media has enabled a whole new way of keeping in touch with those who are remote and you could also try having face to face style conversations with free calling services such as Skype or Apple’s Face
Many say that there is something particularly special about a woman’s friendship with other women and in 2009 the Kappa Delta Sorority decided to make September International Women’s Friendship month, so perhaps for females there are two reasons to celebrate. But, with Sociologist Gerald Mollenhorst reporting in 2012 that most of us replace half of our

Choosing A Nursery
Choosing your child’s nursery can be daunting, especially if you are a first time parent, but there are steps you can take to make it easier.
Premises - Are they clean, well maintained and secure? Are you happy with their size? Do they feel welcoming? Is there an outside play space?
First, check the hours on offer at your local private or council run nurseries. Find out the hourly/daily/weekly costs and if they have any places available.
Activities - Are they fun and interesting? Is time set aside for exercise and relaxation?
Read Ofsted reports to give an idea of how well they are run and how the needs of the children are being met. From here, make a shortlist and arrange to visit several nurseries, when you should look out for the following:
Speak to local schools and other parents as this can aid the selection process, but mostly go with your gut feeling - and remember to book well in advance as the best nurseries tend to get booked up quickly!
Staff - What is their training and experience? How do they interact with the children? What is the staff to child ratio? Do they use a similar approach to the children as you? Children - Do they seem busy and relaxed? Are they happy and purposeful? What is the intake?

Cider
It is believed that cider existed as long ago as Roman times, but its popularity in the UK stems from just after the Norman Conquest. The UK has the highest per capita consumption of cider and the largest cider producing companies. Cider is the thirst-quenching choice for many on a long hot summer’s day. Ciders range from sweet to dry and can be cloudy amber in colour, brown or even clear liquids. Modern massproduced varieties appear similar to sparkling wine whereas traditionally brewed varieties tend to be darker and stronger. A lot depends on ingredients and technique. Historically West Country varieties use cider apples and a pressing process which involves layers of straw rather than cloths.
In Eastern Counties it is more usual for a variety of eating and cooking apples to be used. Scrumpy is one of the most famous forms of traditional cider. It is usually cloudy, has little or no carbonation, and a high alcohol content. When pears are used rather than apples the drink is known as Perry. Some of the big producers now have specific pear varieties and there are also many popular ‘fruit’ based contemporary brands which are created by adding other fruits to apple cider. Low alcohol versions are available meaning that cider can be enjoyed by everyone this summer. By Susan Brookes-Morris

Five Top Old Movies
There are several movies I could watch over and again. Here’s my pick of the oldies! In It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) James Stewart stars as a troubled family man, about to commit suicide on Christmas Eve, feeling that his life has amounted to nothing. He is saved by his guardian angel who shows him the lives he has touched and the difference he has made to his community. Who couldn’t resist Gene Kelly, sloshing his way through puddles and swinging from lamp posts in the 1952 film Singin’ in the Rain? Set in Hollywood at the end of the silent movie era, the score also features Donald Connor’s iconic performance of Make ‘Em Laugh. The psychological thriller What Ever
Happened to Baby Jane (1962) stars Bette Davis as a failing actress who holds her sister (Joan Crawford) captive in an old Hollywood mansion. Full of menacing twists and turns, it has a shock ending that will keep you guessing! Steven Spielberg’s 1975 film Jaws is about a killer shark that makes repeated attacks on New England residents and how it is finally tracked and disposed of. The atmospheric music adds to the tension and the interaction between the three male leads is sharply observed. Finally, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) is a heart-warming cartoon about a beautiful young girl who wins the affection of an enchanted beast. The animation is stunning and the score is beautiful. A new version starring Emma Watson is due for release next March.
