//// WELCOME TO THE MILITARY
DISTRICT OF WASHINGTON Survival tips for living in the greater Washington, D.C., area By Alice Swan
take advantage of the DoD National Capital Region Mass Transportation Benefit Program. The program provides a monthly stipend to those who qualify, who are working in the NCR, to help cover the costs of their daily commutes. More information on the program and eligibility can be found at www.whs.mil/MTBP/index.cfm.
Whether it is for the first time, or the fourth, a move to the National Capital Region for military families brings lots of unique challenges and opportunities. If you are a newcomer to the area, perhaps these tips can help you adapt a little more quickly to life here.
3. Driving in D.C. is about timing and alternate routes.
1. Learn how to be a slug— or may be you already have.
First the bad news—traffic in the area is as bad as you’ve heard and most likely have already experienced. But there is some good news; learning the back roads to your destinations and timing your travels can ease those traffic woes. A neighborhood map for the car would be a wise investment. Sometimes those popular GPS systems don’t always know the shortcuts. Use the map to chart a path to your destination that avoids the most congested roads. Try not to venture out during the peak traffic periods—7 to 9 a.m. or 4 to 6 p.m. These simple tips may help you relax behind the wheel.
Merriam-Webster defines a slug as, “any of numerous chiefly terrestrial pulmonate gastropods … found … where there is a reasonable supply of moisture and are closely related to the land snails but are long and wormlike…” But here in the Militar y Distr ict of Washington (MDW), my definition of slug becomes, “an individual who rides along, allowing drivers to take advantage of HOV lanes for drives to and from the Pentagon or other destinations.” This symbiotic relationship has its own special rules and etiquette, which can be found online at slug-lines.com.
4. Make connections.
2. Become a Metro maven. Getting around the greater Washington area is much simpler when you master the Metro system. By learning the bus or rail routes, you can easily travel through the city and its surroundings, and avoid all the traffic and parking hassles in D.C. Have a smartphone? Visit wmata.com/ mobile on your smartphone for rider information at your fingertips. There are also free or for-a-fee apps available from various companies. Treat all family members to a SmarTrip card—to be used for the Metrorail and bus systems. SmarTrip cards are also convenient to have on hand for the out-of-town visitors you can expect. Don’t forget that service members and Department of Defense employees are able to Page 2

It’s easy to feel isolated when moving to the MDW. While some housing is available at places like Fort Belvoir, Joint Base Andrews or Fort George G. Meade, most military families find themselves living in the surrounding suburbs. Families go from living in the bubble world of a military installation to life, as they say in Germany, on the economy. It can be a culture shock, but there are ways you can reach out and get back in touch with your military roots. Attend one of the newcomer welcome programs offered by local Army Community Services (ACS), Marine & Family Programs, Fleet and Family Readiness, or the Force Support Squadron at Joint Base Andrews. For example, the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall ACS offers newcomer employment classes and more. The monthly schedules can be found at jbmhh.army.mil/web/jbmhh/Services/ACS.html. August 2013
Check your closest installation’s website for program information. Did you know that you can become Facebook friends with your closest installation to make sure you get the latest news? Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Fort Belvoir, Marine Corps Base Quantico, Joint Base Andrews, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling and Fort Meade are among the posts you can like. Or, join one of the spouse groups in the area. There are the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps Officers’ Spouses’ Club, Andrews AFB Security Forces Spouses, Fort Meade Enlisted Spouses’ Club, Fort Belvoir Officers and Enlisted Spouses Clubs, Army Officers’ Wives’ Club of the Greater Washington Area, and many more. Most of these clubs offer smaller special interest groups or get-togethers by ZIP codes so that it is easier to meet and connect with other spouses.
5. Get involved in your community. While military families are experts at transitions, in the D.C., area, most find themselves in new and unfamiliar territory. The military support systems you relied on within the confines of a fence aren’t as easily accessible. You find yourself surrounded by—civilians! None or few of your neighbors wear a uniform. They’ve never heard of places like Twentynine Palms, Barstow or Leesville. Mention Great Falls and they point you toward a park on the Potomac River. It tends to make you want to hunker down in your new house, apartment or townhome. But living in MDW provides a unique opportunity to see if the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. You
don’t have to shop at a commissary; why not try one of the international food markets in the area? Fast food here can be taco trucks or kebob houses. Join the neighborhood pool, community homeowners’ organization or the PTA at your child’s school. The counties in the area have tremendous youth sports programs. Getting involved will show you that individuals everywhere are volunteers, just trying to make a positive impact on their community. The old military spouse adage, “Bloom where you are planted,” is a slogan that applies anywhere you live.
6. Experience history. Don’t be intimidated by stories of crowds and Metro slogs or adopt a ‘We’ll-go-next-time’ attitude. Washington hosts once-in-a-lifetime events throughout the year that you should make a point to attend. With strategic planning (something service members are great at), patience, SmarTrip cards, lots of water bottles and warm clothes in winter, your family can be a part of all that is happening in our nation’s capital. From seeing the Fourth of July fireworks on the Mall to cheering Marine Corps marathoners or aahing as the National Christmas Tree lights up, don’t miss out on the events that become part of our nation’s history. Take time each month to visit the Smithsonian museums, monuments, historic sites and quaint towns that make the MDW a great place to be stationed for families. Enjoy your tour of duty in the National Capital Region. And remember, visit www.dcmilitaryfamlife.com for helpful information, event announcements, or to ask questions or start a discussion. Let us hear from you.
Thanks to one of the great youth programs in the area— the Northern Virginia Girls Softball Association, Mary and Hannah Swan developed a love for softball that carried through to high school district honors. Check out the programs in your neighborhood.

//// BACK TO SCHOOL
THE MILITARY WAY By Lori Tupper It’s upon us again; you know, that awesome part of the year when you’re in overload mode because summer just isn’t long enough and you’re not done relaxing or you’ve been so busy with your summer schedule—driving everywhere with camps, classes and lessons—that it’s just sneaked up on you. For us, it wasn’t even summer. It was during a PCS from overseas and learning about our area, and then one day realizing that we forgot about schools! That it’s OK to have your 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son with you while house hunting and exploring. School? What school? Oh right, the school that our children should be attending on a daily basis Monday through Friday. Here is a fact: Moving is hectic for anyone. Our cousins just did a big move from Northern Virginia to North Carolina and she called me to say that us military spouses are pretty amazing for doing what she was doing this one time, every couple of years. She was in freak-out mode because they had so much stuff; it was a massive wake-up call to get rid of things for her. I told her that I understood her frustrations and all the questioning, especially the “why do we even have this?” But that’s neither here nor there; I just wanted to paint a picture of moving being hectic, and also put in a PSA about purging. It’s very good for the soul, but I digress. If you have ever moved at any point in your life, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. The boxes and boxes of stuff you don’t even remember purchasing; the strange people packing up your life and shipping it very far away; the eating takeout because your pots, pans, plates and utensils are in a crate somewhere; and the realizing that you packed something important that you meant to put in your luggage, only to not see it for a several months. Sounds fun, doesn’t it?

Moving for military families seems to become streamlined at some point—granted it may take a while, but it happens. We make it look easy, even though there are some missteps and mishaps along the way; we take it all in stride and keep on moving forward. It’s what we do. However, I’ve learned through my own process and by speaking with other spouses that one of the biggest concerns for military families is moving just before or during a school year. That can be tough. Learning a new school system can be a challenge—finding the right school, in the right district; August 2013
getting to know the administrators, office staff and teachers; and let’s not forget about trying to meet other parents and our children making friends. It’s especially a daunting time for families who have never navigated the waters of transferring a student, figuring out the best schools, or learning the safest and fastest way of getting your student to and from school on time. Also, learning bus routes can become a bit of a nightmare (especially true if you live overseas). While my family and I were overseas, we were fortunate to have only one school to contend with. But, at the same time, it was unfortunate due to all the changes that having only one school can bring. It was a big-time season of transition for this particular school. There were new principals being brought in, new office staff being hired, the systems and standards for the teachers had changed, and the bus routes and drivers were constantly switching—all of this was confusing for the students. I think that if I were brave enough, I probably would have homeschooled my daughter during this time. But alas, I was not that brave, nor am I as cool as those who do homeschool. Thankfully, it was with the help and communication of an amazing teacher and parents from her class that she and her classmates did just fine and excelled beyond all our expectations. I’m a firm believer in “It takes a village.” In this case, it truly did. One of the positives that come from having a child in school overseas is that they are surrounded by their own. A class full of military children is a dream come true for those who move a lot. It’s not a bunch of children who have grown up together and been friends all their lives. They are children who have traveled the world or may be just moving for the first time that are grouped with others who know
how they feel and what they are going through. That’s when organic, lifelong friends are made, even if that friend leaves in the middle of a school year. My daughter started school here in Maryland in April. It was tough. It was ugly. It was sad. She wanted so hard to make friends, to have been there for past events, to have had that yearbook picture, and to have known the girls who had birthday parties and sleepovers that she (the newcomer) wasn’t invited to. And, it was no different for my son. It’s this aspect of moving during a school year that hurts parents the most. We all know how it is to be a kid and be rejected by your peers. It stinks. We’re grateful for a new beginning with this school year. This time, we’re prepared! We’ve been active in our community. We’ve made friends with kids and the parents of students that will be in the same grades and schools as our kids. I am the new secretary of the PTA for my daughter’s school and will be as active as I can for the one at my son’s school. We will beat this outsider syndrome, as I like to call it. We also are preparing them academically. Even though making friends and having fun is important, being a great student is even more so. One of the changes that comes with having to start a new school is that state standards are constantly changing; school districts are not created equal and they all expect different things from their students. I have printed out the state standards for our school district and have been injecting them in our summer fun. This summer, we’ve created incentives for my soon-to-be thirdgrader to learn her multiplication tables and we’ve created a chart for my son to read 50 books by the beginning of kindergarten. We make it fun though; it’s not all work and
no play. There are parties and outings for goals that are reached. Because we celebrate our successes, we also learn from our mistakes. We want to excel at all we do, especially in school, in our home life and in having fun. I’ve been to the school to meet with administrators. We’ve met the office staff and they know our names, our faces and our expectations for each other. I really think it’s good for the students and parents to have one-on-one time with the person of authority at their school. I’m hoping and preparing to make this year and every year from here on out an amazing time for our students. I also hope to take what I’m learning and utilize it when our baby is in school four short years from now. It’s a learning process, and I’m still new to all this school hoopla myself. Every year will be different; every duty station will be different. Some will be more challenging than others, but we will do our best to overcome, never stop learning, never stop stepping out and being better than before. I think my favorite part of the preparation thus far is school shopping! I get so excited by new pencils, paper, folders and all the other fun supplies. It reminds me of all the fun I had when I was growing up and getting ready for school to start. Everything is all shiny and new—brand-new backpacks filled with all the tools I need to succeed that year. I felt like I was ready to take on the world and I’m happy that my children feel the same way when it comes to the shopping. I’ve been taking lots of notes and there are some pretty amazing deals out there at major retailers and small boutique stores alike. I urge you to do your research, budget and go get some of those must-have back-to-school items for the kids at prices that can’t be beat. I’m the queen of coupons and I love a deal (but that’s another article).
