Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Make this “the most wonderful time of the year” with JBM-HH FMWR JBM-HH Marketing

The time is coming where most of our social activities will take place inside due to the change in seasons. Instead of lounging poolside, we’ll be inside celebrating fall and winter holidays. This year, consider bringing your celebration to the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall (JBM-HH) clubs – or join one of their parties already in progress! Looking for something new to do on date night? The JBM-HH Fort Myer Officers’ Club host a weekly Latin themed dinner dance and special live performances throughout any given month. One of the club’s more wellattended events is the annual Oktoberfest dinner. Guests are treated to a traditional and authentic German meal accompanied with music provided by an authentic German band. The club also offers a New Year’s Eve party complete with party favors, three course dinner and champagne toast. Want to treat your taste buds to a new experience? The Sunday Brunch trend is still very popular and JBM-HH serves a first class meal. The Fort Myer Officers’ Club and Spates Community Club both serve a Sunday Brunch menu to include breakfast favorites such as pancakes, eggs, hash browns, carving stations with ham and roast beef and seafood pasta. Planning and executing a holiday meal can be overwhelming, not to mention the aftermeal clean-up. Consider bringing your family

to one of the clubs for your next holiday meal. Enjoy a Thanksgiving meal at one of several seating times at any of the three JBM-HH clubs. Mark your calendars to enjoy Brunch with Santa at Spates Community Club. Santa will be taking pictures with children and handing out goodie bags (while supplies last). Looking for a family activity that involves physical activity? How about bowling? The JBH-HH Bowling Center has plenty of lanes, an updated and state-of-the-art scoring system and a snack bar to feed the team between games. Shoe rental and games cost much less than “outside” the gate and lanes are almost

always available on weekends! In addition to these events, the JBM-HH clubs are available for customers as a venue for hosting special occasions. The clubs are centrally located in Arlington, VA, offer ample parking, and affordable room rental and catering rates. “We happen to sit just a short distance from the Nation’s Capital and right around the corner from the Pentagon,” said Christina Darensbourg, JBM-HH Business Operations Division Chief. “It’s convenient for our patrons to take a short drive and use our facilities,” Darensbourg said. “We have quite a few catering options and venues to choose from and since we work with active duty and retired service members, their families, and the Department of Defense civilian workforce all the time, we completely understand the special circumstances and requests they may have.”

A word about our clubs…

The Fort Myer Officers’ Club is considered the flagship club of Five Star Catering and is home to the Koran Ballroom, the facilities most ornate and highly requested room. Wedding receptions, retirement celebrations, holiday parties and change of command ceremonies are held in this room which features a hand painted wall mural, wall to wall carpet and a crystal chandelier. The other rooms are

each known for their special characteristics as well: the Abrams/Chaffee Room overlooks the club’s three pools, the Lamplighter Room has a wooded pub style bar, and the Campaign Room is intimate enough to host a ladies’ club meeting. Although membership is not required to use any of the JBM-HH clubs, membership in the Fort Myer and Fort McNair Officers’ Clubs offers great perks. Officers’ Club membership benefits include (but are not limited to) special pricing on all meals and special Club events, member pricing on pool and tennis court fees, reciprocal privileges at participating military Clubs worldwide, invitation to attend the Annual Tree Trimming Party, and much more! If you are interested in details on becoming a member please call the Membership Office at (703) 696-5147. Spates Community Club, located on Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia, is also available for wedding receptions, Town Hall meetings, birthday parties, change of command ceremonies, retirement parties and any other special occasion you can think of. Darensbourg also said the club is used for trainings, expos, and company picnics. Spates Community Club has a full service sports bar featuring a pool table and big screen plasma TV’s. The club also has a covered patio area for BBQ-style events. The Fort McNair Officers’ Club is located in

Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall DC and is famous for its breath-taking views of Hains Point and the Washington Channel. The Fort McNair Club is also the only facility in JBM-HH that can accommodate an outdoor formal event. In addition to the annual 4th of July BBQ picnic, the Fort McNair club hosts many outdoor weddings, receptions, and other special events on its impeccably manicured lawn. Lastly, the Bowling Center rounds out the offerings available to JBM-HH FMWR patrons. Located on Fort Myer, the Bowling Center recently underwent a renovation that included installing new carpet, replacing the scoring equipment with a new state of the art scoring system, replacing the flooring on the lanes, and adding the Java Café. The Java Café serves Starbuck’s coffee (iced and hot), frappachinos and lattes. The Bowling Center offers Glow Bowling and birthday packages well below the market prices. Two Events That Are A Must See

What’s the longest running show on Broadway? Think you know the answer? Are you sure? Well, it’s actually the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®! Since 1924, the Parade has kicked off the holiday season with glorious bands, balloons and floats. For a complete history of the parade, check out Macy’s Parade History website. It all started in 1924 as Macy’s employees treated Manhattan to the city’s first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®. The response was so overwhelming that the founders declared it would be an annual event. It was in 1928 that the famous helium-filled balloons were first released at the end of the parade. The following year, the balloons were fitted with safety values allowing them to remain airborne for several days. And, as an added feature, a return address was placed on the balloons. If you were lucky enough to find one and return it to Macy’s, you received a prize! In 1934 the Parade saw the first collaboration between Macy’s and the now famous Walt Disney Productions. It was that year that saw the introduction of the Parade’s first Mickey Mouse balloon. As time went on and the popularity of the parade increased, viewers now show up at Central Park on Wednesday night before the big event. It’s there that the Macy’s employees and volunteers finish blowing up the big bal-

loons and the spectators come out for a closeup view of the event. Warning, you now have to get there early as well, because more and more spectators show up each year for this special occasion. What should you bring to view the parade? Dress warm! Even if the weather reports are for warmer temperatures, you have to get to your favorite location early to view the parade. And you will be standing for a long time at that location. And the wind is always blowing in the canyons of New York City between the tall skyscrapers, so bundle up and wear the extra woolen socks. You can always remove layers if the sun warms you up. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade kicks off the holidays with unparalleled pomp and pageantry. The scale of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is immense: more than 3.5 million people view the parade live along the parade route, and more than 50 million viewers tune in to the television broadcast. Spectators watch in awe as 10,000 participants — including the nation's best marching bands, performance groups, giant helium balloons, breathtaking floats and the one-and-only Santa Claus — pass before their eyes. If you'd like to get a chance to see the balloons as they get blown up, on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009 you can observe the inflation of the 25 balloons from 3 - 10 p.m. near the American Museum of Natural History just off
