Fort Belvior Belvoir Bicycle Interest Group

For some the words "mountain" and "biking" should just not be used in the same sentence. However, Outdoor Recreation Specialist, Eric Falkenhagen, assures that there doesn't have to be so much as a hill in site to take part in this growing sport. "The sport has really taken off as people try to take some time to get some fresh air and experience nature." said Falkenhagen. The MWR Leisure Needs Survey revealed that Army Families wanted to do more outside activities together. To support this, Outdoor Recreation now has a new fleet of 18 mountain bikes varying kid-sized bikes as well as women's bikes in addition to standard size bikes for organized trips. Mid-Atlantic Mountain Biking Champion, Erin Treece, leads the Warriors in Transition Unit on rides on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. to various locations in Virginia and around DC. "It has been very rewarding to experience riding with the Soldiers of this unit.", said Treece. "In particular I enjoy the dynamics of riding with those who want to challenge themselves with a sport which may be new to them while encouraging each other in the process. For some Soldiers this has been their first experience riding in the dirt." Tree explained that, as an individual sport, it requires endurance, core strength, balance, bike handling skills and selfreliance. Fort Belvoir Outdoor Recreation is also start-

ing a Bicycle Interest Group and Incentive Program. With an 18 bike trailer and 14-passenger bus there is an opportunity to do some rides further away. The Incentive Program gives credit for miles ridden on trips and alone and reached prizes are awarded for different levels. This program mirrors successful programs with MWR such as Trailblazers hiking program with over 100 members and Cardio Incentive Program with Sports & Fitness with over 300 members. Outdoor Recreation wants to get everyone from beginner to intermediate levels "riding in the dirt" with them on trips throughout the summer. For more information on biking or other programs contact Briana Carter at 703-805-1226 or Eric Falkenhagen 703-805-3081 or go to www.belvoirMWR.com.

Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall JBM-HH Five Star Catering = Five-Star Service all-around By JBM-HH FMWR Marketing

Aside from being the flagship club of Five Star Catering, the Fort Myer Officers’ Club at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall has the distinction of being named a Best of Weddings (reception sites) 2010 winner. The Knot, the “go to” website for all newly engaged brides, asked thousands of brides what they really thought about their vendors and when the scores were tallied, The Fort Myer Officers’ Club was ranked in the Top 3. Better still, the Fort Myer Officers’ Club was one of only two service clubs in the D.C. Metro Area to make The Knot Best of Weddings 2010 Winners list. “We’re very proud of this recognition,” said Christina Darensbourg, JBM-HH Business Operations Division Chief. “We’ve won awards before from the Department of Army but it means something extra special to be voted among the best of all DC Metro Area reception venues.” Darensbourg went on to say that The Club is successful due to the hard work and experience of the staff. “They love what they do and it shows. They treat each bride as if she were the only bride…as it should be.” In addition to providing impeccable catering services for weddings and other special events, this club has had the honor of hosting the family and friends of many high profile dignitaries. The Fort Myer Officers’ Club is also becoming very well known for its ability to serve as a conferencing and training site. “We happen to sit just a short distance from the Nation’s Capital and right around the corner from the Pentagon. It’s a great convenience for the federal workforce to take a short drive and use our facilities,” Darensbourg said. “We offer convenient parking, we have quite a few catering options to choose from and since we work with active duty and retired service members, their families, and the Department of Defense civilian workforce all the time, we completely understand the special circumstances and requests they may have.” The Club is home to the Koran Ballroom, the facilities most ornate and highly requested room. Wedding receptions, retirement celebrations, holiday parties and change of command ceremonies are held in this room which features a hand painted wall mural, wall to wall carpet and a crystal chandelier. The other rooms are each known for their special characteristics as well: the Abrams/Chaffee Room overlooks the club’s three pools, the Lamplighter Room has a wooded pub style bar, and the Campaign Room is intimate enough to

Membership in the Fort Myer and Fort McNair Officers’ Clubs offers great perks for eligible FMWR customers. Officers’ Club membership benefits include (but are not limited to) special pricing on all meals and special Club events, member pricing on pool and tennis court fees, reciprocal privileges at participating military Clubs worldwide, invitation to attend the Annual Tree Trimming Party, and much more! If you are interested in details on becoming a member please call the Membership Office at 703-696-5147. Spates Community Club and the Fort McNair Officers’ Club are also part of Five Star Catering. If you’re looking for a place more low key to host your event or conference, both the Fort McNair Officers’ Club in Washington DC and Spates Community Club on Fort Myer offer comparable alternatives. Each club has a ballroom, ample parking and the benefit of being conveniently located inside the Washington DC beltway. Spates Community Club is available for the entire workforce to use as it has no membership requirement. In fact, the Club has become the community’s club. It is used for everything from wedding receptions to Town Hall meetings to birthday parties to change of command ceremonies. Darensbourg also said the club is used for trainings, expos, and company picnics. Spates Community Club has a full service sports bar featuring a pool table and big screen plasma TV’s. The club also has a covered patio area for BBQ-style events. The Fort McNair Officers’ Club is located in DC and is famous for its breath-taking views of Hains Point and the Washington Channel. The Fort McNair Club is also the only facility in JBM-HH that can accommodate an outdoor event. In addition to the annual 4th of July BBQ picnic, the Fort McNair club hosts many outdoor weddings, receptions, and other special events on its impeccably manicured lawn. “It’s nice to be able to offer our cus-

or with Hains Point in the background. To find a place in the civilian market place to meet that requirement would definitely cost. The best

thing about our facilities is that we can offer the best of everything a customer would find ‘outside the gate’ but it will cost them less.” To round out their offerings, each club hosts weekly meal events. Stop by the Fort Myer Officers’ Club for the Sunday Champagne Brunch, Seafood Night or the Latin Themed Dinner/ Dancing events. Spates Community Club hosts Sunday Brunch and all three clubs offer various themed events such as Thanksgiving Dinner, Easter Brunch, and a Mother’s Day Brunch. It’s clear from The Knot survey, as well as from the many awards they’ve received, that the best thing Five Star Catering offers is delicious food and quality service. In addition to just having updated their catering menus (for both general special events and weddings courtesy of a chef once employed at the White House), Five Star Catering employs people with bilingual language skills. “We know that we live in a culturally diverse area,” said Darensbourg. “We want to make sure that - should it be necessary - our customers are able to communicate their requirements with a great measure of ease.” It seems that JBM-HH Five Star Catering has thought of everything. “Not everything,” Darensbourg said smiling. “But we love our work and are always looking for ways to outshine our competition and out-do ourselves.” For information on booking a wedding reception, conference, or other catered event with Five Star Catering, please visit them online at www.jbmhhmwr.com.

FORECAST • Summer 2011

USCG Sector New York The founding of the Revenue Marine was stimulated by the financial needs of a new nation. After the Revolution, the United States was deep in debt, and its emerging industries were under tremendous pressure from British imports. The American merchant marine, a mainstay of the colonial economy, had been weakened by losses in the war. To secure its political independence, the United States first had to secure its financial independence. To accomplish this imperative Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasure, proposed a bold economic plan, relying heavily on income generated by customs duties and tonnage taxes that discriminated against foreign goods and ships. Hamilton understood that in order for his plan to succeed, “The Treasure needed a strong right arm” to suppress smuggling and ensure duties and taxes were paid. He thus sought authorization from Congress to build “so man boats or cutters, not exceeding ten, as may be deployed for the protection of revenue.” Enacted on Aug. 4, the Tariff Act of 1790 authorized the building of ten cutters, but did not define their exact specifications. Most were “Baltimore Clipper” type two-masted schooners that were “light, fast, easily managed, seaworthy vessels, handy in beating in and out of harbors and through winding river channels.” The Tariff Act also authorized a corps of 80 men and 20 boys – the Revenue Marine – charged with a single purpose: assistance in the collection of customs duties and tonnage taxes. Hamilton also understood that for the new nation to earn customs duties and tonnage taxes, ships had to make it safely to port. Essential to that end were lighthouses, of which there were twelve in 1789, each erected and maintained by local interests. Hamilton realized lighthouses were of national value; therefore, he proposed to Congress that responsibility for all aids to navigation be given to the central government. Congress agreed, and on Aug. 7, 1789, the Treasury Department was given responsibility for constructing and maintaining all the Nation’s aids to navigation. In just its Ninth Act, the First Congress thus accepted safety of life at sea as a public responsibility and “launched the national government upon its course of guarding the coast in the interest of safety and security afloat.” Come celebrate the anniversary of the Revenue Cutters and Marines on Aug. 4 at Sector New York. The MWR Department will be hosting their annual picnic celebration with good food, fun, activities for young and old and an enjoyable birthday party as the Commanding Officer cuts the birthday cake for everyone. The event will be held at 204 Molony Drive, Fort Wadsworth. Stop by and say “Hello.” Information from U.S. Coast Guard Publication 1

Summer in New York City?

Everyone that has ever visited New York City in the summer knows the three H’s: Heat, Haze and Humidity. The city has so much to offer for everyone and here are just a few ideas that are off the beaten path. MUSIC: Jazzmobile presents select composi-

tion performances from a list of more than 350 works by the late jazz composer, musician and educator Dr. Billy Taylor. Starting with a tribute at Lincoln Center, the celebration continues all summer long with free concerts in various parts of New York City, including Harlem and Central Park. For more information, visit jazzmobile.org. Admission is free. VIEWS with Sweets and Strolls: For a special view of the city and to walk off all that New York pizza, take a stroll over the historic Brooklyn Bridge. When you get to the other side, meander along the majestic Brooklyn Heights Promenade and enjoy the Manhattan skyline. Make a pit stop for some delectably rich ice cream at the famed Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. Depending on the season, there is likely to be a line to get into this spot, but the indulgence is worth the wait. OPEN SITES: Central Park is next on our list. Head uptown to Central Park. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the massive common space is a green oasis in the middle of the big city—and perhaps the world's most famous public park. Its 843 beautifully landscaped acres host meadows, bodies of water, more than 26,000 trees, 58 miles of walking paths, 36 bridges and arches and every kind of outdoor recreational activity imaginable: picnics, ice-skating, concerts, baseball, lawn bowling, mushroom walks and more. It's a sight every NYC visitor should see and attracts more tourists than Broadway Shows, the NY Yankees, and the Empire State Building combined! CULTURE: East of Central Park is Museum Mile, which may have more culture per square foot than anywhere else in the universe. Limited time means you won't be able to enjoy all nine museums on this stretch of Fifth Avenue— but you should browse through at least one to get a sense of the unparalleled collection of art housed in the City. At The Metropolitan Museum of Art, at East 82nd Street, you can view limited-time exhibitions as well as objects in the museum's permanent collection, which consists of more than 2 million works of art that span the breadth of human history. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum features scores of modern and contemporary masterpieces (not the least of which is the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building itself). And El Museo del Barrio, at East 104th Street, showcases Puerto Rican, Caribbean and Latin American art. SPIRITUAL: Back downtown before boarding

the ferry to return to Staten Island, visit the 25story spire of Trinity Church which rises up from Broadway, majestic yet muted by the gleaming skyscrapers of the financial district. This is the third structure located in New York City. The two other locations were on Governors Island, former home of the Coast Guard in New York City. Consecrated on Ascension Day 1846, this Neo-Gothic structure sparked controversy for its ornate, Anglican architecture since the country was still recovering from the Revolutionary War. Massive, intricately carved bronze doors open up to a white nave and sanctuary bolstered by soaring dark wood arches and adorned with some of the country's oldest stained glass. Of equal note is the spooky-yet-serene graveyard where chipped, jagged tombstones date back to the 1700s. Engineer Robert Fulton was laid to rest here, as was Alexander Hamilton, whose dual with Aaron Burr was deemed so disgraceful that rectors buried him as far from the church as possible. The white marble Sugar House prison monument honors some of America's first POWs, held by the British near City Hall. Also, visit All Saints Chapel. Designed by Thomas Nash and built in 1913, the low wooden archway, simple pews, and creamy white marble altar create a small, peaceful haven for prayer and reflection. The chapel honors Dr. Morgan Dix, who served as Trinity's rector from 1862-1908. His tomb sits on the altar. The Trinity Root is a two-ton bronze sculpture encasing the roots of "the tree that saved St. Paul's," the downed sycamore that shielded Trinity's sister chapel from the debris of the World Trade Center attacks. Tours: A tour of the church and

graveyard is scheduled for 2 p.m. daily. Call ahead; they're often cancelled. Thanks to nycgo.com and nymag.com for this information. LODGING? Visiting New York City? Don’t pay New York prices.
