How this all began… by Jessica Allen
I met my cute hubby on a blind date at Fort Campbell in 1999. Somehow we have remained with the 101st this entire time. We married in 2001, had cutie number one in 2002 and cutie number two in 2005. Chaz’s Army adventures have taken him to Kosovo, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan and all over our great nation, but he had never been to D.C. until last year. On Jan. 22, 2011, I had to hear the words no Army wife wants to hear. It’s amazing how I can still hear them today— “Mrs. Allen, while your husband was on a dismounted patrol in the Zhari district of Afghanistan he stepped on and detonated an IED. From the battlefield report, we know he lost both legs and one arm is severely damaged. We do not have any
more information to add at this time. We will need to know where you will be for the rest of the day in case we must make a formal notification.” Over a year has gone by and I can remember sitting at my desk and hearing those words so perfectly. I am so blessed because the second phone alerted me that he was stable and was safely in KAF (Kandahar Airfield) and in surgery. The next few days were filled with phone calls providing more details and finally the answers on what was next. On the evening of Jan. 25, my husband Chaz arrived at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and I joined him the next day. That’s when our D.C. journey began. When this adventure started, I spent one week in D.C. caring for my husband and one week in Tennessee in our home car-
ing for our girls. Chaz was too gravely injured and our girls needed to keep their lives as normal as possible because we knew we would have to uproot them and bring them to D.C. soon enough. Thanks to our amazing family and friends I was able to accomplish this mission. Chaz discharged to outpatient status at WRAMC in May, and when the school year was finished, I brought the girls to live with us in D.C. and really began our journey to the “new normal.” Over the past year, he and I have turned our journey to the “new normal” into a fun adventure for our family of four. I will blog about our adventures as a wounded warrior family in the nation’s capital. I hope you will follow along and enjoy some of our adventures.

Day-to-day saving for your family by Lisa Allen
I am so glad to have been selected as one of the first bloggers for DCMilitaryLiving. I hope to reach out to as many folks as I can and engage some followers over the coming months. The main topic that I intend to write about is how can military families save here and there and cut some costs, mainly on travel and day-to-day living. Whether it's to get a bargain, look for specials on everyday items or travel, tell a great story, or even make a few dollars, everybody loves a great deal. Let me tell you a little about myself: My name is Lisa Allen. I am married to a retired Navy commander (aviation/fighter guy); have worked in the travel industry (my vocation and ad vocation); lived and worked overseas in an embassy "far, far" away (hints to follow); and I love dogs—the bigger DCMILITARYLIVING • Summer 2012
and more "mixed," the better. I love, love, love to thrift no matter where I go and I am pretty good at it. My latest find: a lightly used commercial-grade food processor for $20—new retail price $499. It needed a small part that cost $20 and it’s working perfectly! The D.C. metro area has some great thrift shops, some even with a daily military discount. My upcoming blog will introduce some of those places. Let's take another example everyone has experienced: Have you ever wondered why your airplane seat costs significantly more (or less) than the folks sitting around you? (I can help you with that and may save you some money.) Are there best times to buy or better ways to route yourself in order to save? A number of years ago, I planned a trip to Zim-
babwe via London and the ticket price was quite high, but I was determined to afford it. So instead of buying one ticket all the way through, I bought two separate tickets New York to London (ticket one) and London to Harare, Zimbabwe (ticket two) and saved more than a third of the price. The drawback? I had to claim my bags in London and then recheck them onto Zimbabwe. Simple really! To keep you guessing and engaged in my blog, here are my "far, far" away hints: Z land, ports galore, is the table set?, wine anyone???, so long separated—can anyone guess where in the world the military took me? Until my very first blog, God bless our troops all over the world, keep them safe and bring them home soon. Talk to you real soon.

ENJOY LUNCH & DINNER ON OUR PATIO! 5
Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall
Splish! Splash! Pools are open! Feeling your skin being gently warSplish! Splash! The Pools are open! Feeling your skin being gently warmed by the sun…smelling a slight hint of chlorine as it rides the aroma wave of coconut infused sunscreen… your mp3 player serving up your most favorite tunes …what could be better? In the summer, not much! As of May 31, the pools at the Joint Base MyerHenderson Hall Officers’ (specifically on Fort Myer, VA) have been open and full of people and summer activity! People of all ages have been coming to the club to enjoy the crystal blue coolness offered in one of our three pools. “It’s like people have been waiting all year to get back in the water!” said Christina Darensbourg, Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Business Operations and Community Recreation Officer. “We’re enjoying a great season so far and it’s only going to get better!” Darensbourg is no doubt referring to the pools long list of water aerobics, swim stroke classes, and pool themed special events. And this year, with the Community Club pool being closed, the Officers’ Club pool will be busier than ever to accommodate those swimmers looking for a pool. The pool is now also open to all Federal government employees. The Fort Myer Officers’ Clubs was established as military membership clubs for active and retired commissioned officers of the U.S. Armed Forces and DoD civilians of a corresponding pay grade (GS-7 and above, or equivalent). However, through an exception to policy, all area Federal Employees can now enjoy the benefits and services our Clubs previously authorized for only DoD ID card holders. The exception to policy does not apply to Army Community Service, our Fitness Centers or Child Care Centers.
With people taking advantage of the new exception to policy, “We’re happy to say our popularity has increased,” said Darensbourg. “People who have always wanted to use the pool but couldn’t because of membership restrictions are visiting us for the first time and really enjoying themselves. It’s great to see!” For the health and fitness minded, the Officers’ Club pool offers Deep Water and Shallow Water water aerobics. Both water aerobics classes are low impact (which is great for your joints!) and provides a total body workout using dumb-bells, noodles, kickboards, floatation device and water resistance. Both classes are great for all fitness levels. Darensbourg advocates water aerobics classes because participants can enjoy the cool water while they workout. “…the best of both worlds,” Darensbourg said. Water aerobics classes start June 18 and cost $3 per class. For the serious swimmer to-be, the club offers a kids’ stroke and turn clinic. The clinics focus on elements of competitive swimming and are designed for the summer season competitive swimmer who wishes to improve their skills. Drill and skill work is emphasized during the hour long session. Each session will focus on the technique and refinement of skills for one stroke to help participants achieve their goals. Coast Guard Day
August 4th, 1790: Join Sector New York as we celebrate 222 years of service to the country. The celebration will take place on August 3rd, 2012 in front of the MWR building on Fort Wadsworth. The day starts off with a series of fun challenge events for children of all ages. As the morning continues the food service kicks in, the music starts, the afternoon games begin, the cutting of the birthday cake, the dunk tank, and of course ICE CREAM closes out the formal activities. The cost is just $4.00 per person. While this is a Coast Guard MWR event, members of all the services are highly encouraged to attend including the active, retired, reserve and their families and friends. We want to show everyone how the Coast Guard can throw a party.
Get to Know Your Coasties
If you are going to join us at their birthday party, you should get to know us as well. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a military branch of the United States involved in maritime law, mariner assistance, and search and rescue, among other duties of coast guards elsewhere. One of the seven uniformed services of the United States, and the smallest armed service of the United States, its stated mission is to protect the public, the environment, and the United States economic and security interests in any maritime region in which those interests may be at risk, including international waters and America's coasts, ports, and inland waterways.
204 Molony Drive, Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, NY 10305 718-354-4407
USCG has a broad and important role in homeland security, law enforcement, search and rescue, marine environmental pollution response, and the maintenance of river, intra-coastal and offshore aids to navigation (ATON). It also lays claim to being the United States' oldest continuous seagoing service. The United States Coast Guard has about 40,150 men and women on active duty. The Coast Guard's motto is Semper Paratus, meaning "Always Ready" The Coast Guard's roots lie in the Revenue Cutter Service, which was founded on August 4, 1790 as part of the Department of the Treasury. An act of the U.S. Congress created the Coast Guard in 1915, with the merger of the Revenue Cutter Service and the United States Lifesaving Service. The United States Lighthouse Service was merged into the Coast Guard in 1939. The legal basis for the Coast Guard is Title 14 of the United States

Code, which states: "The Coast Guard as established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times." Upon the declaration of war or when the President directs, the Coast Guard operates under the authority of the Department of the Navy. The Coast Guard later moved to the Department of Transportation in 1967, and on February 25, 2003 it became part of the Department of Homeland Security. As members of a military service, Coast Guardsmen on active and reserve service are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice
and receive the same pay and allowances as members of the same pay grades in the other four armed services. Thanks to the Coast Guard Public Affairs Department for this information. After Coast Guard Day Festivities or all summer long, Sector NY has tickets to the amusements parks that are accessible in the New York City Area.
