Fort Belvoir
Trouble Comes in Threes at Fort Belvoir New Year Fitness and Winter Travel As we head into winter we expect to have winter events – rain, sleet, ice, snow. We prepare for them at this time of the year. However, on Aug. 23, as Fort Belvoir was preparing for an impending visit from hurricane Irene, a 5.8 earthquake, centered 80 miles south of Fort Belvoir shook the installation - and everyone’s nerves. Just as the installation recovered from the earthquake and a glancing blow from Irene, a rainstorm unlike anything seen in the area in years, rolled along Interstate 95 on Sept. 8 and poured 7.03 inches of rain on Fort Belvoir and the surrounding area within a 3 hour period. The National Weather Service reported that, “Fort Belvoir rain was more than a 1 in a 1,000 year event.” There are many lessons to be learned from this scenario but the main one is to expect the unexpected. Of course, we now know that earthquake safety should be added to Fort Belvoir MWR’s repertoire of preparedness manuals. The earthquake experience is now very real for all who felt the rocking and rolling for a week or more with the aftershocks but many of those who had never been in an earthquake initially thought it was an attack on the installation, a broken gas main or some of the many large construction vehicles on Belvoir driving past in a convoy. As the shaking continued, however, some people ran inside and those inside ran outside, letting human nature dictate their reactions. Recognizing that an earthquake is happening is the first step to determining what action to take.
The review of the appropriate procedures will now help to alleviate some of the confusion and help staff instruct those around them during such an event. The hurricane, which is not a new to the Virginia coastline, upended trees and caused power outages, as anticipated. Of the three events, however, the unexpected rainstorm caused the most damage. Storm drains had been checked within the two weeks preceding the storm as Irene approached from the southeast but that was little help as unexpected flash flooding caused by the rain and rising streams caught many by surprise. As water levels rose faster there was no time for sandbagging and many post facilities, to include eight DFMWR facilities, suffered water damage either from the roofs or from accumulating water around or under the buildings. “It’s difficult to recover from water damage,” said George Dickson, DFMWR Business Operations Director. There may be no way to stop such events but, as part of MWR’s preparedness to deal with the aftermath, we coordinate with our public affairs office in times of emergency using texting and Facebook posts via smart phones and web to communicate a course of action to managers and update customers. As has been shown in previous snowstorms and even the earthquake, Facebook is sometimes the best viable source for information sharing. So charge your Smart phones and have a plan.

What are you making?
There was a time when people hand-crafted the items they needed and being “homemade” resulted in a deeper appreciation. Often these handicrafts would be past down to subsequent generations, and it is still happening at the Fort Meade Arts & Crafts Center.
Located in the Jenkins Center at 6530 York Road; the Fort Meade facility features wood working, ceramics, and framing, as well as many other offerings and services. The Frame Shop features classes in basic framing to advance mat cutting, while the Ceramics Shop feature a wide spectrum of ceramic projects. The Learning Center features drawing, painting, scrapbooking, card and tag making, piano, computer software, cricut classes and more. Custom engraving & framing and gift shop is open to all. They engrave on glass, acrylic, wood, brass and other mediums, and turn cherished photos and prints into works of art. The center’s retail operation features items such as desk sets, flag or shadow boxes, clocks, novelty items and elegantly framed works of art. Arts & Crafts Center is located in the Fort Meade MWR’s Jenkins Center; which also houses the Auto Skills Center. Learn a new skill, make new friends, find a gift, or have something beautifully preserved. Visit us online at www.ftmeademwr.com, stop by the Jenkins Center, 6530 York Avenue on Fort George G. Meade.

The Army Distaff Foundation/Knollwood
HONORING THE SACRIFICE OF SERVICE FOR A LIFETIME Serving Veterans of America’s Greatest Generations We recognize the important role the military, veterans and their families play in our nation, not only today, but the role that they played yesterday and will play tomorrow. Founded in 1959, The Army Distaff Foundation, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to provide affordable, safe retirement housing and healthcare services to retired career officers of all of the uniformed services and their female relatives (spouses, sisters, daughters, mothers, or mother-in-laws), regardless of one’s financial means, ensuring that no eligible person is ever turned away. The Foundation operates Knollwood, a continuing care retirement residence in Northwest Washington D.C. The concept began as “a special residence for female relatives of United States Army officers and warrant officers” by the Society of Daughters of the United States Army over fifty years ago. However, it was Mrs. Maxwell D. Taylor and Mrs. Hoy Davis who, in the spring of 1958, decided it was time to do something about it. Mobilizing the resources of the Army Wives’ Council and later an Interim Committee, the Army Distaff Foundation (ADF) was created 1035602

and this special group of women began appealing to Army Officers’ Wives’ Club all over the world for help in making their dream a reality. The response was immediate and in just over three years, their vision came to fruition with the opening of the Army Distaff Hall. Residency increased from the original 15 to 166 in less than ten months. By July 1963, Army Distaff Hall was fully occupied and has so remained ever since. It soon became apparent that many ladies eligible for residency had such limited financial resources that they would not be able to take advantage of the Army Distaff Foundation’s program without monetary assistance. In 1962, the ADF established the Fellowship Assistance Fund to ensure that no eligible resident would ever be turned away. The Fellowship Assistance Fund is a legally restricted fund that provides financial assistance to those who would otherwise be eligible for admission but cannot afford to pay. From this date to the present, these funds have provided financial assistance in the form of partial or total payment of admission fees, monthly service charge, dining room charge, and essential medical expenses. This novel concept grew and developed over the years and the Army wives were applauded for “taking care of their own,” supporting the Foundation’s motto, “Let Arms Protect its Women.”
In 1989, eligibility for residency was extended to couples and retired male and female officers of all branches of the uniformed services and the Distaff Hall was renamed to Knollwood. Since its inception, Knollwood has expanded to include four levels of care: Independent Living, Assisted Living, a Skilled Nursing facility, and the Special Care Center for individuals with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Today, over 300 male and female residents representing every branch of the service are proud to call Knollwood home. To fulfill the mission, vision and goals of the Army Distaff Foundation set forth by our Founders over five decades ago the Foundation fundraises and reaches out to philanthropists, corporations, foundations and other organizations to preserve our mission and honor the sacrifice of service for a lifetime. With your support, we will continue to serve the American military family and future generations to come. For more information about the Army Distaff Foundation, please contact Ashleigh Hughes, Director of Development and Capital Campaigns, at 202-541-0492 or visit www.armydistaff.org and click on the Visit the Foundation’s Site tab located at the top right corner.

NSA Annapolis Summer Camp Registration Starts in April Plan ahead for your children’s summer activities, especially since registration for the Billy the Kid Youth Center’s Summer Camp starts on April 23 and runs to May 4, 2012 on a priority basis. NSA Annapolis’s summer day camp will run for 10 one-week sessions from June 11 through August 17, depending on public school schedule. Navy School-Age Care Summer Camp operates weekly sessions for military and eligible families who need full-time SAC services for the entire 10 week-summer. The SAC program gives priority to families who need year-round full-time care and places them in spaces first. After those who need regular weekly full time services are placed, then families who want individual weeks can request any vacant spaces. When an individual week reaches maximum capacity, requesting families will be placed on the waiting list for that week. SAC provides opportunities for spaces for families who request “selected weeks” of care based on space availability not filled by full-time families. Registration for the entire summer camp will follow the priority listing below: 1. Children currently enrolled in the School Age Care (SAC) program 2. Military families not enrolled in SAC with priority
for those who enroll for all 10 weeks. 3. DoD Civilians 4. NDW contractors, if space is still available. Each family registering for the entire summer will have only one free vacation week, which must be specified by April 30. After all the full time summer campers have been registered, spots will be available for families who need only a few weeks for camp following a similar priority listing. Camp fees are based on income and eligibility. Families pay for their last session first (as a deposit) and then make weekly or monthly payments in advance during the summer. There are no discounts for paying for sessions in advance. Multiple child discounts may be considered on a case-by-case basis via a hardship waiver. Day camp fees average from $44 to $137 per week, depending on total family income. Families will need to take their ID and LES (leave and earning statement) from both parents for verification. Parents also need to provide the telephone numbers of three adults for emergency contacts. For more information, please contact the NSA Annapolis Billy the Kid Youth Center at 410-293-9396

USCG Sector NY Too cold outside? Some exciting indoor experiences that are little know secrets were explored in the apps “The Scoops” and include: The Cloisters, 99 Margaret Corbin Drive in Fort Tryon Park; (212) 923-3700; http://metmuseum.org/cloisters. The Cloisters is a branch museum to die for, plus one of the best places for site-specific art viewing in America. Located at the northern tip of Manhattan in Fort Tryon Park – itself a New York wonder – it houses most of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s medieval European holdings in an assemblage of religious and domestic buildings from 12th- to 15th-century France, among them four of the inner courtyards of convents and monasteries known as cloisters. Inside are treasures nearly beyond count: painted panels from altarpieces, like “The Annunciation” by Robert Campin and his workshop; carved ivories like the Bury St. Edmunds Cross; illuminated manuscripts; stained glass; stone and wood sculpture of all description. The indisputable high point is the series of seven resplendent 15th-century unicorn tapestries, where a violent hunt for the mythic beast symbolizes the triumph of wedded love. Whether the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine is actually the biggest cathedral in the world is an open question. But there's no denying that it is immense, enormous, monumental, colossal, humongous — consult your thesaurus to choose your own adjective to express its magnitude. What I love about it, though, is that it is endearingly humble, emphatically American, unapologetically unfinished. Like the visitors and congre-

For lodging, don’t pay New York prices, always remember the Coast Guard Guest Quarters at Fort Wadsworth. The former family housing units offer a two bedroom or a three bedroom townhouse complete with a kitchen, living room, dining room and backyard deck. The location offers easy access to Manhattan and all the major tourist locations in NYC while at the same time offering you, the visitor, great views of the New York Harbor and the truly unique Statue of Liberty. The two bedroom unit is only $94.00 per night and the three bedroom unit is only $99.00 per night. And if the Coast Guard is booked, you can always stay at the Navy Lodge. Co-located next to the Guest Quarters, all the ITT support is still provided to you by the Guard. Contact them for additional housing needs at 718-442-0413. The Sector NY MWR Office offers an ITT office with complete information regarding travel in the city, local best bets and how to navigate around the city. While it can be a bit overwhelming to be surrounded by 9 million people, part of the fun and the mystique of NYC is the hustle and bustle of daily life.
