COMMUNITY VILLAGE LAWRENCE SEEKING VOLUNTEERS Community Village Lawrence (CVL) is rolling out a free transportation program. CVL will coordinate volunteer drivers to provide rides for seniors in need. The program aims to improve the quality of life for those who have difficulty leaving their home by providing the assistance they need to attend an appointment, obtain medical care, shop for groceries or attend social gatherings. CVL’s AmeriCorps VISTA program coordinators and members of the Services committee have been laying the ground work for this initial service and are Continued on page 2
Aimed at Attracting and Retaining Boomers by Offering a Best In Class Experience.
Lawrence and its surrounding area is positioning itself as the ideal destination for people looking to live the rest of their lives in a vibrant, diverse and culturally rich town with a sense of place and community. Boomers are nothing like the generations that came before them. Retirement doesn’t mean slowing down and reminiscing about past adventures and careers; this is a time to try new things, potentially reinventing themselves in new careers and lifestyles. Because boomers are living longer, healthier lives and have a different level of energy means communities need to be prepared to welcome and support this booming generation. ReINVENT Retirement is ready to do this. To deliver this message, ReINVENT Retirement has launched a new website, Live Lawrence Life (www.livelawrencelife.com), aimed solely at the baby boomer generation. This website is a rich resource of information important to help inform boomers of what Continued on page 3

GRANNY BASKETBALL EXPANDING TO KANSAS Learn-to-play practices start Aug. 15 in Lawrence
Women of a certain age in Lawrence and surrounding areas will soon be learning how to play Granny Basketball. Learn-to-play practices will be offered bi-weekly from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Saturdays beginning mid-August at the Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th Street, in Lawrence. A total of six practices will be held from August 15 through October 24. There is no cost to participate. Granny Basketball is a playful, fun-filled senior exercise activity that encourages women age 50 and over to stay fit in a non-traditional, social environment. The league provides wholesome, nostalgic and sometimes humorous entertainment, as well as an outlet for charitable fundraising. The six-onsix game is based on rules from the 1920s, when women’s basketball was a milder game. The informal, learn-to-play practices will help Kansas players learn the game rules and league philosophy in preparation of the state’s inaugural 2016 league season. “The old-time rules and 1920s-styled uniforms are tailormade for an over-50 league,” said Michele Clark, Kansas coordinator and volunteer for Granny Basketball. Players dress in 1920s-inspired uniforms - black bloomers, middy blouses and sailor-style collars displaying each player’s number. The floor is divided into three courts, and players can have up to two dribbles per possession. Running and jumping are not allowed, but “hurrying” is, Clark said. With an emphasis on safety, players are only allowed three fouls each game. The modified league rules also award three points for underhanded “granny shots.” Complete rules are available in the league’s Joy of Six Handbook. The Granny Basketball League is a non-profit Iowa-based organization founded by Barb McPherson Trammell in 2005. Currently, 22 Granny Basketball teams are active in six states with more than 400 players in Iowa, Missouri, Texas, Louisiana, Minnesota and Virginia. Each summer, teams across the nation compete in the National Granny Basketball Tournament, which this year was held July 25 in Nashville. Visit www.grannybasketball.com and www.facebook.com/KansasGBB for more information.

FORTUNETELLER - Is There a Financial Scam in Your Future? A Letter From District Attorney Charles Branson Evil spirits keeping you from the person you love? Do you need an 80-mile bridge to trap evil spirits in another world? Assuming you have no need for a bridge, how about a $40,000 Tiffany diamond ring to “protect your energy?” As outlandish as these “purchases” sound, they are based on a sad, but real story. A New York man paid a fortuneteller over $700,000 for these items and more. For hundreds of years people have sought out the assistance of fortunetellers (yes, the reading of palms or the tea leaves kind) and while fortunetellers may be utilized for entertainment purposes, they should never have anything to do with your finances. To most of us,
stories of an 80-mile bridge to trap evil spirits, or a Tiffany diamond ring to protect energy, sound like things from a fairy tale. But unfortunately, some folks get caught up in the drama an unscrupulous fortuneteller can create. Helping you or a loved one avoid that type of scam, and tips on how to find a reputable financial advisor for your hard-earned money is what I would like to share with you. Fortuneteller scams commonly start when a victim goes to a fortuneteller with a problem in one of three broad areas - love, money or health - and the following is an example of how a scam can unfold. While the initial visit may

only involve a small fee, the time spent with the victim is used to gain personal information and then subsequent visits are used to convince the victim that the source of their problem is a “curse” that has been put on the victim and/or their family. As the victim is manipulated over a period of multiple visits, the victims can be lead to believe their money must be turned over to the fortuneteller to be blessed or cleansed. Victims are assured their money will be returned to them, but of course, it is not. It is all a cruel scam. A fortuneteller is not a financial advisor and should never tell or advise how money should be invested. End of story. Many of us would love to be able to predict the future and accordingly invest our savings and retirement, but of course there are no guarantees on the financial performance on investments and anyone who promises you otherwise is running a scam. A legitimate financial advisor will not promise to know what will come next in the financial market. A financial advisor can complete research and properly advise you, but no crystal balls, palms or tea leaves will be involved. Financial advisors are trained and licensed to work in their profession. If you need information on pursuing financial investments, and if you would like to find a financial advisor to guide you on your investments, the Federal Trade Commission provides some tips on how to select one. Status as a married person is relevant for determining eligibility for benefits such as the following: • Enhanced Social Security benefits based on your spouse’s or deceased spouse’s earnings • Premium-free Medicare Part A benefits • Medicaid coverage of nursing home expenses or expenses of other long-term services and supports • Social Security survivor benefits (if your spouse has died) Here are some situations in which status as a married person might be particularly important for determination of benefits: • My spouse has earned more. If you are married to someone with a significantly higher income, you may be eligible for a higher Social Security benefit. • I do not have enough work
history for Medicare Part A. If your spouse receives Medicare but you do not have enough work history, you may be entitled to Medicare Part A based on your spouse’s work history. • I am paying for Medicare Part A. If you are paying for Medicare Part A because you do not have enough work history, but your spouse receives Medicare, you should be eligible for Medicare based on your spouse. • My spouse lives in a nursing home or receives other types of long-term services and supports. The Medicaid program covers nursing home care and other types of long-term services and supports. Medicaid’s eligibility calculations allow the sick person’s spouse to receive a significant allocation of the sick person’s savings or income, before Medicaid determines what the sick person might have to contribute to his or her own health care. • My spouse passed away nine months after we were married. If your spouse has died, you may be entitled to Social Security survivor benefits.
Act now. The beginning date of benefits generally is based on the month of application. A delay from August 1 to September 30 might mean loss of a month of benefits, or a month of health coverage.
