It’s time to reassess Medicare Prescription Coverage The Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Period begins Oct. 15 and DCSS will provide assistance navigating the new Medicare Part D Plans and enrollment. It is important to reevaluate your Part D (prescription) coverage each year, as plans change and so may your medications.

DCSS Chili Extravaganza - Cook-off, Supper & Bingo - October 20 It’s the season for chili! Douglas County Senior Services, Inc. will hold a Chili Extravaganza Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Lawrence Senior Center, 745 Vermont St. The event includes a chili cookoff, chili supper and prize bingo.

The $10 ticket price will pay for a delicious dinner of chili, dessert, and beverage. Dinner will be served beginning at 5 p.m. and prize bingo will start at 6 p.m.

Businesses, teams and individuals are invited to enter our chili cook-off for an entry fee of $100. All proceeds raised will benefit the Emergency Fund, which is used to help seniors who find themselves in financial need.

There will be some limited transportation for seniors who require it. Reservations for the bus need to be made by October 16. Tickets will go on sale Sept. 30, and may be purchased at the Lawrence Senior Center, from one of our board members, or one of the Senior Wheels drivers. Call DCSS for more information, 842-0543.

Medicare, Social Security Checks and Banking Account Scams

By Janet Ikenberry Douglas County Senior Services, Inc. turns 40 this month.

Starting as a grassroots effort in response to the 1965 enactment of the Older Americans Act, the Douglas County Planning Council on Services of the Aging, Inc. was created in October of 1972. Transportation and meals were the first services offered. Rides were scheduled in a rented room over a jewelry store on Massachusetts Street, and meals were served at the Ballard Community Center. We’ve come a long way since then. We’ve moved, our name has changed, and programs have been added. But one thing remains the same – our mission to help seniors remain independent and active.

It has been my privilege to work at DCSS for 20 of those 40 years. As we prepared for our Anniversary celebration, sorting through old photo albums and scrapbooks, the memories came flooding back. So many good times, so much hard work, so much fulfillment. I have had the opportunity to work with some very gifted and dedicated colleagues over the years. Together we have served thousands of seniors in our community. What wonderful memories we all share. And best of all, new memories are being made here every day.

Please join us as we celebrate our accomplishments and set course for the next 40 years. Our Open House October 11, from 3 to 6 p.m., will feature a ribbon cutting to launch our exciting new website and logo. Cal Broughton, our first executive director, is flying in from Washington, D.C. for the occasion! There will be music, refreshments, and ample time to visit and reflect. We look forward to seeing you there.

DCCOA and OWL to host Legislative Forum Oct. 3 Plan to attend the Legislative Forum sponsored by the Douglas County Coalition on Aging (DCCOA) and the Older Womens League (OWL), Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Senior Center, 745 Vermont.

State and local legislators and candidates will address issues that impact older adults in Douglas County. There are many issues that directly affect seniors and the services they often depend upon. Please take this opportunity to hear where candidates stand on the issues.

I want to make you aware that senior citizens are being targeted in a Medicare, Social Security and banking scam.

Medicare participants across the country are receiving telephone calls from scam artists who are telling the victims new Medicare cards will be issued and in order to complete the process and to get the new card, they need to provide the caller with their confidential banking information. To be clear, this is not a program or service of Medicare. It is fraud and theft and do not fall victim to these tricks.

Another variation on this scam is to also ask about your bank account number for the deposit of your Social Security check.

The caller will provide the wrong number and when you notice the number is wrong, they will ask you to provide the correct number so they can ensure it is deposited in the correct account. Once the con has your account number he can quickly drain your money.

Here are some tips to remember when you feel you may have a con on the other end of the phone: • Do not be afraid to just say, “No thank you,” and hang up.

You do not have to be polite to these people. You owe them nothing.

• If you are not comfortable simply hanging up on them, demand they mail their offer to you. You will never receive anything, but it may make you feel better than simply hanging up on them.

• If you have caller ID take their number down in the event anything more comes of your contact with the caller.

You never know when this information could be helpful.

This scam is especially tricky this time of year when seniors are accustomed to it being near the time of Medicare renewal. I am including a link to a tip

sheet that is meant to help demystify the Medicare enrollment process. It is still a complicated process for most people, but at least this is a place to start. http://www. medicare.gov/publications/ pubs/pdf/11219.pdf If you would like to learn more specifically about the Medicare card scam, you may contact the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services Senior Medicare Patrol at 785-296-0377. Lawrence non-profit announces fundraiser and KABC Caring Award presentation Kansas Advocates for Better Care (KABC), a statewide nonprofit dedicated to advocating for quality long-term care announces its annual “Stand By Me” benefit event. The event will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Maceli’s, 1031 New Hampshire in Lawrence. The event is free, reservations are required and donations encouraged. There will be a live auction with guest auctioneer Jeremy Taylor, as well as a silent auction, tasty light refreshments, and oldies music will be provided by The Fabulous Torque’s, with Johnny Isom, Kansas Music Hall of Famer.

KABC previously announced Robert C. Harder, Ph.D., M.T., B.A. as the 2012 recipient of its highest honor, the KABC Caring Award. Dr. Harder will receive the award during the event. “KABC is pleased to recognize Dr. Harder for his lifetime dedication to social services in Kansas and his sustained commitment to good quality long-term care for Kansans,” said Margaret Farley, KABC President. Dr. Harder is the fourth recipient of the KABC Caring Award. The KABC Caring Award honors individuals who have established new practices which improved the quality of long-term care, developed innovative uses of existing resources, or who have advocated successfully for measurable improvement in services for Kansans needing long-term care and support.

Prior recipients include University of Kansas Professor Dr. Rosemary Kennedy Chapin (2011), former Kansas Governor Mark Parkinson (2010) and former Kansas Congressman, Dennis Moore (2009).

Skillbuilders continues at the Lawrence Public Library Skillbuilders is a series of educational and support programs designed to assist those who are adapting to life changes due to the loss of a spouse or a loved one, or are now the primary decision maker because of illness or limitations. Each program is intended to provide information on various topics that are important in adjusting to changes in daily living or circumstances. The series will be offered each Thursday morning through Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. in the Gallery of the Lawrence Public Library.

The October programs will be: Oct. 4 - Winterizing Your Home, Neil Gaskin, owner of Natural Breeze Remodeling Oct. 11 - Basic Car Care, Richard Haig, owner and operator of Westside 66 & Car Wash Oct. 18 - Eating for One, Beth Greer, nutritionist at Hy-Vee Oct. 25 - Aging in Place, Linda Crabb, Occupational Therapist for VNA There is no registration for Skillbuilders. Snow Shoveling Assistance Available

The winter months bring more than cold weather and high utility bills. For many seniors in our community it also brings the worry of how to clear their walkways when it snows. Douglas County Senior Services is partnering with the City of Lawrence again this winter to alleviate that concern for those who are physically and financially unable to remove the snow from their sidewalks.

The “Safe Winter Walkways� program is currently recruiting volunteers to assist with snow removal. Volunteers will be matched with those needing assistance and then be responsible for clearing the walkways for that individual after each snowfall. This is a wonderful opportunity for able bodied folks to help their neighbors.

Those needing assistance or anyone wishing to volunteer may register for this program by calling 832-3338. Those with internet access can find more information online at www.lawrenceks.org.

Extra Help for Medicare Beneficiaries

Do you have Medicare Part A? If you are single, is your total monthly income less than $1,396 with assets no more than $8,440? If you are married, is your total monthly income less than $1,891 with assets no more than $26, 120? (Assets do not include your primary residence and vehicle.) You may be eligible for help with your Medicare costs.

Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help are savings programs that help pay for Medicare costs, such as co-pays and premiums. They may also lower deductibles, co-insurance and prescription drug costs.

If you have limited income and resources, you may qualify for Extra Help and one or more of the Medicare Savings Programs. There is no estate recovery with Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help.

These programs will not put a claim on your estate.

Simplified Computer Software That Can Help Seniors Get Online Dear Savvy Senior, Do you know of any computer software that’s designed for seniors that I can download on an old computer that I have? I would like to set my grandmother up with a seniorfriendly system for email and Internet access, but I don’t want to spend a lot of money.

Searching Grandson Dear Searching, There are actually a number of companies and services today that offer simplified computer software that’s designed specifically for seniors who have little or no computer experience.

These software packages can transform most Microsoft Windows personal computers (PCs) - some work with Macs and tablets too - into a much simpler computer experience that provides seniors easy access to most functions like sending and receiving email, browsing the Internet, making video calls, looking at photos, playing games and more. Here are some top options to check out.

Free Software Since it’s completely free, a good place to start is at Eldy, an Italian nonprofit organization that provides simplified computer software in 25 different languages including English. Available to download at www.eldy.eu, this software works on PCs that use Windows and Linux systems, Macs and Android tablets.

Once installed, Eldy converts the computer’s desktop into a simple six-button menu that has large text, color contrasts and simplified instructions (no

confusing icons) that makes it easy to see, understand and operate.

The six-button menu puts seniors literally one-clickof-the-mouse away from simplified versions of email, the Web, Skype for video calls, chat groups, a simple word processing program and more.

It’s also worth noting that Eldy software works on touchscreen computers too, and they also offer online tech-support.

Fee-Based Services If, however, you don’t mind spending a little money, there are also a number of companies that offer software similar to Eldy, but provide a few extra enticing features.

One of the best deals is offered through SeeYouLink (seeyoulink.com) which has a three-month free trial and charges only $4.95 per month after that.

SeeYouLink’s web-based software will transform any mouse-operated or touchscreen Windows-based PC, into a simplified bigbutton operating system with large fonts and color contrasts. This will give your grandmother easy access to a host of functions that she can select from like email, Web browsing, video calling, brain-fitness games, movies, Facebook, a calendar that sends reminders and much more.

In addition, this service also provides a “remote access” feature that will give you and other family members the ability to access your grandmother’s computer system from literally any computer anywhere in the world, so you can help her set

things up, show her websites, scheduled appointments, or guide her through any other questions or problems she might have. And, when you or your grandmother needs help, SeeYouLink offers free techsupport both online and over the phone.

In addition to SeeYouLink, some other companies worth a look that offer similar services include InTouchLink (intouchlink.com), which can be used on a PC, Mac or iPad and costs $13.75 per month or $150 per year. Pointer Ware (pointerware.com), which works on Windows PCs and costs a one-time fee of $149, or you can subscribe monthly for $8 per month. And BigScreenLive (bigscreenlive. com), that operates on Windows PCs and runs $9.95 per month for an annual membership.

Senior-Friendly Computers If you find that you would rather purchase your grandmother a new computer that’s designed for seniors and is ready to go right out of the box, you have options here too.

Two of the most popular are the Telikin (telikin.com, 800-230-3881) which costs between $699 and $999 - this same computer is also sold as the “WOW” computer through firstSTREET. And MyGait (mygait.com, 866-469-4248), which runs $799 or $899 plus a $20 monthly service fee.

Help Seniors in Need by Recycling Old Cell Phones Do you have old cell phones sitting around gathering dust?

Let us take those old phones off your hands and put them to good use. Donate them to DCSS! Proceeds from our cell phone recycling program go to our Emergency Fund, which helps local seniors in need of assistance. While some donated phones are used for our 911 Emergency Cell Phone program, most are recycled through a fundraising program that gives money back to us. Please think of us when you upgrade and spread the word to friends and family.

SENIOR WHEELS (formerly Bus 62) serves the transportation needs of customers who are 60 years or older. We provide rides within the city limits of Lawrence. In Eudora and Lecompton rides are provided on a limited basis.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL RIDERS EXCEPT ON FIXED STOPS Reservations must be made before 12:00 NOON, Monday through Thursday.

CANCELLATIONS AND NO-SHOWS Cancellations should be called in as soon as possible. When you cancel

your ride in advance, you provide the opportunity for someone else to schedule a ride. If you fail to call the transportation office to cancel your ride or cancel it the day of the ride, it is considered a “no-show.� Six NoShows in 90 days will cause you to be suspended for 30 days.

If you miss your pickup, all of your scheduled rides for that day will be cancelled.

If you need assistance boarding the vehicle or entering a building, you may be required to have a personal care attendant which you will need to provide. The personal care attendant may ride with you at no charge.

What’s for lunch? On the go? In a hurry? No time to sit and eat? Senior Meals “Grab & Go” is the answer!

The Senior Meals Department is now offering carryout meals for those seniors age 60 and over and their spouses who need a fast nutritious meal on the go. Just call any Senior Dining Center at least a day in advance to reserve your meal and it will be ready for you to “Grab & Go.” A donation of $2.75 per meal is suggested. Kansas Humanities Presentation: Bushwhackin’ the Jayhawks along a Civil War Border Friday, Oct. 26, 6:30 p.m. Fee: None Location: Lawrence Senior Center.

Through an exploration of letters and diary entries from Civil War personalities such as Webster Moses, Samuel Ayers, various women on the home front, and those formerly enslaved, this presentation will explore how residents lived, dressed, prepared for battle, and worked on a daily basis to ensure that their side would be victorious, whether they were Missouri bushwhackers or Kansas Jayhawkers. Although the Civil War dominated the lives of those living along the border, the residents continued to live as normally as possible, farming, building communities, and rebuilding their shattered lives once the war ended. Quilting Project with Marla Jackson Monday, Oct. 8, 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Fee: None. Location: Lawrence Senior Center.

This is the quilting session in the series for the narrative quilting project led by nationally-known quilt artist Marla Jackson.

Participants will begin to design and work on their quilt section which will tell a personal story of their choice, as this quilt will be a narrative work of art when it is finished. Solid-colored fabric and other supplies will be provided; participants are asked to bring any special fabric that they would like to add if desired. Participants with sewing machines are asked to bring them to the session; otherwise please call and request that a sewing machine be provided for you (limited machines are available). WWI Museum & Steamboat Arabia Day Trip Thursday, Oct. 25, pick-up/drop-off location in Lawrence. Cost: $75.

This KC “One of a Kind” Getaway takes us to the World War I Museum; the ONLY museum of its kind in our country! Over 55,000 items are housed in the museum, library, and archival collections.

As a national museum mandated to preserve the vast history of World War I, its participants, and this National Historic Landmark, it continually collects pieces of history. After the tour, take the elevator ride to enjoy a magnificent outdoor view overlooking all of Kansas City. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy a lunch on our own in the food court at Crown Center.

Then, we’re off to the Steamboat Arabia Museum, home to a true time capsule of frontier life in the 1800’s. The Arabia was headed up the Missouri River in the fall of 1856 when she struck a tree snag and sank just north of Kansas City. Her cargo was full of 200 tons of supplies bound for general stores and pioneer settlements.

As the years passed, the river changed course and left the Arabia buried beneath a Kansas cornfield.

Finally, in 1988 a group of modernday adventurers uncovered the lost Arabia and her magnificent cargo. They were amazed to find fine dishware, clothing, and even bottled food all preserved in remarkable condition. Their find has been called the King Tut’s Tomb of the Missouri River! Smoke on the Mountain II: Sanders Family Christmas Sunday, Dec. 9, pick-up/drop-off location in Lawrence. Cost: $89 This “Christmas Getaway” takes us to the Great Plains Theatre, Kansas’ premier professional theatre, in Abilene. We’ll enjoy a scrumptious family-style fried chicken meal at the Brookville Hotel before the show. The show, Sanders Family Christmas, tells the story of the Sanders family which is returning to Mount Pleasant, NC, home of the Mount Pleasant Pickle Factory.

It’s Christmas Eve, 1941 and Reverend Oglethorpe has invited the Sanders family to the Baptist Church to sing and witness, getting the congregation into the down home holiday spirit before the boys, including one of the Sanders’ own, are shipped off to World War II. More than two dozen Christmas carols, many of them vintage hymns, and hilarious yuletide stories from the more or less devout Sanders family keep the audience laughing, clapping and singing along with bluegrass Christmas favorites. This show is richly entertaining, wildly infectious and a musical that brings cheer to the audience that’s eager to see how their friends from “Smoke on the Mountain” have been getting along.

EDUCATION, HOBBY & FINANCE AARP Driver Safety Classroom Course- ages 60 and up Thursday and Friday, Nov. 1 & 2, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Fee: $12 for AARP member, $14 for non-AARP member. Location: Lawrence Senior Center. This course reviews the rules of the road, and contains safety driving tips for all drivers.

Completion of the class entitles students to a discount on their automobile insurance. There is no physical or written test. This refresher course is a pleasant mix of video and instructor presentation.

Our volunteers are working to meet the needs of their neighborhoods and the community by serving in various departments including senior meals, senior wheels, community services, and leisure and learning.

In recognition of these outstanding achievements, Douglas County Senior Services, Inc is proud to announce the availability of the PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD, a prestigious national honor offered in recognition of volunteer commitment. Established in 2003, this new AWARD is given by the President of the United States and honors individuals, families and groups who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service over the course of 12 months.

Douglas County Senior Services, Inc has teamed with hundreds of organizations and businesses across the country to deliver this Award to our most outstanding volunteers. As a Certifying Organization of the PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD, we can nominate potential recipients and distribute the Award to those who meet or exceed the AWARD criteria.

Lawrence Public Library offers AARP Driving Safety class this month Register now for the AARP Driving Safety class that will be held at the Lawrence Public Library Thursday and Friday, October 18 & 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The class will be held in the Gallery room of the Library. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. This refresher course covers basic driving skills and provides updates on laws. It also discusses driving techniques with suggestions on making adjustments as one ages. Those completing both days of the class will be eligible for the safe-driving insurance discount. Douglas County Emergency Communications and Douglas County Senior Services Promote Smart 911 Seniors in Douglas County now have an advantage in emergency response thanks to the implementation of Smart911, a national safety database that provides 9-1-1 and response teams with enhanced data in emergency situations. Smart911 allows citizens to create a free Safety Profile of the critical data on their household that they want 9-1-1 to have in the event of an emergency. Once created, when a citizen places an emergency call, their profile is immediately made available to 9-1-1 and responders.

This data is far more detailed than what is currently available and allows response teams to have a better understanding of an emergency situation before they arrive on scene.

A Safety Profile can be created and maintained online by visiting the Smart911 website at www. smart911.com. Douglas County Senior Services is also offering assistance with completing a safety profile for seniors who request assistance by calling 1-877-295-3277 or 842-0543 locally in Lawrence or Eudora. Douglas County Senior Services staff will schedule a home visit anywhere in the county, and will assist you with the completion and maintenance of your Safety Profile. This service is available to all seniors regardless of income. For low income seniors we can combine a Smart911 Safety Profile visit and assistance with the application for a free cellular phone with 250 minutes of airtime each month through Assurance Wireless.

Q: My mom had a stroke and has been in the nursing home receiving physical therapy, but she’s getting well enough to go home, if I can be there to take care of her a couple of weeks.

Can I be protected from being fired if I take time off my job to take care of her?

A: I hope so, but it depends.

The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows employees who have an elderly parent with a serious health condition to take unpaid leave, and offers some job protection. Under the FMLA a “serious health condition” is an “illness, injury, impairment or any physical or mental condition that requires inpatient medical care or continuing treatment by a health care provider,” which includes care in a hospital, hospice, assisted living facility or nursing home. The FMLA protects employees taking up to 12 weeks annually of unpaid leave to care for ailing family member, including elderly parents. An employee who has been terminated in violation of the FMLA would be able to seek reinstatement to the employee’s prior position, lost wages (including 200% of lost wages if the employer acted in bad faith), and potential noneconomic damages.

But all employees are not protected; small employers are not covered by the FMLA. Only employers with 50 or

more employees, which amount to only 60% of private sector employees who are covered by and eligible for FMLA leave benefits. All public employees are covered, however, as are private elementary and secondary schools, regardless of the number of employees employed.

Also, every type of assistance one might provide to a parent with a serious health condition is not covered. For example, employees are not generally covered by the FMLA for activities not traditionally considered “caregiving,” like making household repairs or improvements, unless those repairs or improvements are directly related to the parent’s basic medical, hygienic, or safety needs. But the FMLA permits employees to secure leaves of absence to assist parents who, while living in their own homes or being treated in hospitals, rehabilitation centers or other facilities, are unable to care for their own basic medical, hygienic, safety or nutritional needs or who would benefit psychologically by a family member providing comfort or reassurance during treatment of a serious health condition.

Additionally, the FMLA permits family members to take leave from work to fill in for other caretakers, provide transportation to and from health-care providers, or to make arrangements for changes in care, such as transferring a parent to a nursing home.

Finally, the protection extends only to unpaid leave.

So if the employee is otherwise covered and protected from termination for being absent from work, the employee would

have to be able to afford to go without wages during his or her absence.

The protection the FMLA affords is likely to be required more in the future. With their increasing lifespans, older persons have longer to become vulnerable to age-related ailments requiring caregiving assistance from sons and daughters -- who are not getting any younger themselves. Some employees in their middle-age and senior years have at least one living parent who will need their caregiving assistance at various times. Health-care advances, elimination of mandatory retirement at age 65, and economic forces have influenced retirement plans of older employees, so that many now work long past the retirement ages of prior generations. The first wave of baby boomers are now in their early 60s. Already, people over 85 are the fastest growing segment of the population by age. It’s possible that even employees in their 70s will need FMLA leave to assist aged parents or must choose whether to sacrifice their own financial security for their parents’ sakes.
