OPENING CREDITS: BLACK SCREEN, MUSIC OF TRAVIS JOHNS EXT - Alley - Night (CHINATOWN) PAN DOWN ALONG WALL JIMMY is ready to fight. We barely make out his face in the darkness. He is backing up. MANNY walks into the frame. JIMMY punches MANNY. MANNY punches JIMMY who falls down. MANNY turns away from JIMMY and signals to his friends. AL, JOEY, and MANNY’S FRIENDS (#3-4) rush in and grab JIMMY. MANNY beats JIMMY’s face. Choreograph: Chinatown Orchard fight (minus the gun) EXT - ALLEY - NIGHT PAN DOWN ALONG WALL TO GROUND JIMMY lies lifeless, alone, on the ground. JIMMY starts to come to his senses. (BEAT) Version 1:

4. JIMMY (CONT'D) You know her mother, and Mr. Fields. They’re swell people. Look, Carole was a swell girl, until Manny got his hands on her. FRED Did you order the code red? JIMMY Listen Fred. I gotta get her away from him. I gotta go in there and talk to her. FRED Did you order the code red? JIMMY She’s right inside. CUT TO: INT - RESTAURANT (THE DEPARTED) JIMMY and FRED stand having approached Manny and Carole, who sit together at a table. A fly lands on the table. Manny smashes it with his hands. MANNY You know what I love about restaurants? CAROLE The food, I don’t know? MANNY You learn a lot watching things eat. MANNY licks the fly guts off his hands. MANNY (TO JIMMY) (CONT’D) You’re not endulging in self-abuse, are you? Sit down.

MANNY I hope you’re not turning into one of them sob sisters who wants to get caught. You’re not cracking up, are you?
5. JIMMY I don’t crack up. MANNY Pick a place like this, any cop can see you, Jesus. JIMMY If this is such a fucking bad idea, why’d you show up? JIMMY (CONT’D) Like before? Superman? Two or three goons hold me while you do the punchin’? MANNY, embarrassed, looks at JIMMY. Carole, sitting next to Manny, looks at Jimmy wounds. CUT TO: EXT - NIGHT - PARKING LOT Again cornered against a car, JIMMY struggles against Al, Joey, and Manny. JIMMY pulls a gun out of Al’s belt. The punching stops. MANNY backs away. JOEY stares at the gun, Al stares at Jimmy. JIMMY Stand back (point at Manny) MANNY makes a slight move toward Jimmy. JIMMY (CONT’D) I’m warnin’ you. Stay away. AL creeps forward. JIMMY turns to him. JIMMY (CONT’D) Don’t make me...(pointing the gun) CUT TO: EXT - NIGHT - PARKING LOT JIMMY, alone, holds the gun up in defense. He backs away. Behind out of a door walks MRS. MAXTON, carrying a baby. She takes a few steps then sees Jimmy with a pistol and haults in her steps. SAM comes out of the storeroom and escorts Mrs. Maxton inside. Sirens are heard. CUT TO:
6. EXT - NIGHT - BUILDING FRONT JIMMY backing through a door, it bursts open. Unknown to him, inside are SAM and MRS. MAXTON. JIMMY closes the door. CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM JIMMY, relaxing, puts his head against the now closed door. He turns, is startled to see Sam and Mrs. Maxton, and instinctively points the gun at them. Realizing who or what they are, he lowers the gun, uncertain what to do next. CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM JIMMY sits listening to the Police Lieutenant Porter outside. POLICE LT. PORTER You’re in good shape, Jimmy, if nothing else happens. They just took off Manny and Al, alive, kicking and... CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM JIMMY has the gun to Mrs. Maxton. MRS. MAXTON There is something wrong with you... JIMMY ...tryin’ to hear what that guy’s sayin’ out there. POLICE LT. PORTER ...just one question... CUT TO: SAM, holding the baby, sits next to Mrs. Maxton. JIMMY hovers over them, asking for help. JIMMY I don’t know what to do. (beat) (MORE)
7. JIMMY (CONT'D) (screaming to anyone with an answer)What’s goin’ on out there, what’s happening? CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM JIMMY, by himself, sits thinking. He hears something outside the door. He turns to Sam and Mrs. Maxton. JIMMY Alright, stay right where y’are.(standing) JIMMY peeps out the window. CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM JIMMY quickly ducks away from the window, stumbling. CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM JIMMY is listening to the pleads outside. MRS. WALLACE ...Just come to the window. Let’s talk to each other. JIMMY stands up slowly, as if in a daze. JIMMY Alright, mom. JIMMY walks to the window. CUT TO: EXT - STOREROOM WINDOW (THE SHINING) JIMMY’s head rises into view.
8. VOICE FROM NEWSMAN OUTSIDE There he is folks! (crowd sounds). The boy with the gun (more crowd sounds). NARRATOR At the sight of the little pigs, he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew the house in. JIMMY screams and bashes his hand through the window then fires two rounds into the crowd. CUT TO: INT STOREROOM (TERMS OF ENDEARMENT) JIMMY sits with Sam and Mrs. Maxton. MRS. MAXTON Jimmy. I was curious. Do you have any reaction at all to my telling you I love you? JIMMY I was just moments from a clean get away. MRS. WALLACE Well you’re stuck, so just face it. JIMMY I can’t, I just can’t. Not yet. Because when that door opens I’m gonna die...and I’m not ready yet. I’ve got things to think out. CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM JIMMY is getting annoyed through the baby’s crying. The crying escalates, he almost overcomes then dashes at Mrs. Maxton and the baby. JIMMY Look, keep him quiet, can’t you? (beat) Is that my fault? CUT TO:
9. INT - STOREROOM JIMMY holds MRS. MAXTON, now standing with Sam next to her, at gun point. Shut up!

MRS. MAXTON You’re a killer.... JIMMY (cutting her off) I told you to shut up! JIMMY shoves the gun closer, and now Mrs. Maxton is crying. JIMMY pulls away, lowering the gun. JIMMY (CONT’D) (regretfully) Oh god...I’m sorry m’am. I didn’t think about his being hungry. MRS. MAXTON stops crying and raises her head. JIMMY (CONT’D) We can’t let him get hungry at a time like this, can we? CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM (BATMAN ???) MRS. MAXTON sits withe baby, SAM, standing, comforts them. JIMMY (to Sam) Go to the window, please. CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM (FIVE EASY PIECES) JIMMY has the gun to SAM, who faces Jimmy. JIMMY The window. Can’t you understand plain English? Tell them to get a bottle of milk for the baby. (to Mrs. Maxton) That’s right, isn’t, milk? (to Sam) Tell ‘em to get a bottle of milk. (MORE)
10. JIMMY (CONT'D) And no tricks, you understand? Go ahead. JIMMY (CONT’D) (over his shoulder) And if they offer you a hamburger instead of the milk, tell them to hold the cow between their knees until it fills a bottle of milk. INT - STOREROOM (THE PASSENGER) SAM agrees and moves toward the window. JIMMY turns to watch Sam. JIMMY (CONT’D) What can you see? SAM A little boy and an old woman. They are having an argument about which way to go. There a sound outside. JIMMY (to someone off screen) Don’t come any closer. Tell ‘em to get a long pole or a stick and tie the bottle on the end of it. The baby cries off screen JIMMY (CONT’D) It’s coming. Can’t you get him to be quiet until it comes? The baby continues to cry. JIMMY (CONT’D) (toward Sam, off screen) Go ahead, get it. That’s close enough! CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM SAM, nearest window, JIMMY, and MRS. MAXTON with child, watch through the window. CUT TO:
11. INT - STOREROOM MRS. MAXTON, nearest window, SAM, and JIMMY evade the crashing glass. JIMMY rushes to MRS. MAXTON and presser her back to the wall. The gun is pointed into her chest. JIMMY Please don’t try that again. Please don’t. CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM (AS GOOD AS IT GETS) JIMMY sits back to the wall, listening Carole outside. NARRATOR Jimmy listens to Carole, the most shameful part of her. At last, she was able to define love. Love was, love was.. CAROLE ...the only thing you’ll ever know. Under the spell of her voice and exhaustion, JIMMY rises and moves toward the door. JIMMY Carole? I want to, Carole. CUT TO: INT - STOREROOM SAM and MRS. MAXTON stand watching JIMMY, who speaks passed them, toward the door. JIMMY That’s what I want to do. JIMMY walks off screen. CUT TO: EXT - NIGHT - BUILDING FRONT JIMMY opens the door. We see his silhouette. He walks through the door. It closes.
