KOMPAN MOMENTS Mini - with maximum play value
YOUNG CHILDREN’S PLAY IS A WINNING INVESTMENT Children develop at an extraordinary rate during the first years of life, and play is an essential part of this process. When children are born, their brains weigh only 25% of their adult weight. During the first years of life, the brain grows quickly and undergoes a “wiring” process. The development of motor skills, sensory skills, thinking skills – even empathy – are dependent on how well the brain develops in early childhood. Play is the motor of development. Societies that invest in the development of young children see a return on investment as high as 7 to 1 . Because the brain undergoes so much fundamental growth during these years, the opportunity to enrich development is that much greater. And happy, healthy, and school ready children grow up to be active members of society. This has far reaching benefits:
• Higher educational attainment • Reduced health care expenditures • Increased economic productivity
Investment in early childhood play and experiences not only makes good economic sense – it builds a better world, with happier children. THE BENEFIT OF MOMENTS MINI DOCUMENTED IN STUDY KOMPAN works relentlessly to improve children’s lives and learning by enhancing their outdoor play. This approach is clearly illustrated in the MOMENTS Mini line, which was developed under KOMPAN’s market-leading design program with input from children and ongoing inhouse research. From concept to final product, the Mini line underwent rigorous testing and piloting to ensure maximum functionality and play value. As part of this process, the KOMPAN Play Institute documented the developmental value of the Moments Mini line in a study that compared toddler and pre-schoolers’ play on a Mini play structure to play on a grassy field. Three main findings emerged from the research: 1. The play structure promoted more dramatic play – a more complex form of play 2. The play structure facilitated higher and more complex language use during play 3. Lesser developed children benefited most from playing on the structure Thus, the Moments Mini line offers the opportunity to invest in children’s futures with world class playground equipment that provides maximum play value.
• Lower crime rates and safer communities
5
MOMENTS Mini: An example of KOMPAN’s market-leading innovation and design Designing high quality play and activity equipment is in KOMPAN’s DNA. Since its establishment more than 45 years ago by the Danish artist Tom Lindhart, KOMPAN has positioned itself as a world-leader in innovative solutions for play and physical activity. At KOMPAN, the process of designing new playground equipment is a long journey characterised by innovation, research and testing. Through this process, designs are refined and fine-tuned until they offer children maximum play and developmental value. The new MOMENTS Mini line is a perfect example of this working process. From start to finish, KOMPAN’s designers, researchers and safety specialists collaborated to create a series of play structures that are age-appropriate for toddlers and pre-schoolers, that afford maximum play value and that have an inclusive design. KOMPAN products go through three stages during the design process:
6
STAGE 1
Designer working on MOMENTS™ Mini
Design sketch
CONCEPTUALISATION The MOMENTS Mini line was conceived as a response to the need for play equipment that stimulates not only children’s physical development, but their social, cognitive and creative development as well. Central to the concept of the MOMENTS Mini line was the use of innovative play panels that could further heighten play value for children. Panel activities make great use of wall space and can be designed for example to support social interactions, thinking skills, fine motor skills, and more.
STAGE 2
On-site test at a pre-school for children with special needs
STAGE 3
A three-year-old tests the sand scoops
ON-SITE TESTS In the case of MOMENTS Mini, prototypes were tested in early childhood centers serving children 0-6 years old. KOMPAN goes a long way to ensure that all users, including users with disabilities, can benefit from our play equipment. To support this, KOMPAN Mini was also tested in an institution with special needs children. During these tests, researchers from the KOMPAN Play Institute, designers and safety specialists made observations and collected user feedback to determine how the play structures could be improved.
Final product launch
Supporting language with the talk tubes
FINAL DESIGN In Stage 3, adjustments based on the Stage 2 tests are applied, and the final play structures are approved for production. Stage 3 is thus the culmination of countless hours of dedicated work by KOMPAN designers, researchers and engineers. This meticulous process ensures that the final play structures have the maximum play and developmental value needed to benefit children. KOMPAN’s design process ensures that all new play equipment: • Is child appropriate • Is of the highest design quality • Has maximum play value

Toddler
Talk tube
Play value 1-4 years The first years of life are the most important years of life. From crying infant to talking child, the pace of development is unparalleled by any other timespan in a person’s life. Therefore, it is essential that playground equipment for this age group is developmentally appropriate and well-designed. As soon as children become mobile they can begin exploring outdoor play equipment. The equipment should be designed to facilitate development in the following key areas:
Children’s understanding of physics can be improved with talk tubes. A pipe connecting two talk tubes carries sound from one side of the play structure to the other.
Hanging bridge Our testing indicated that the hanging bridge is a favourite of children. The bridge’s elasticity encourages hopping, which strengthens bone density.

Shop counter The shop counter is a great prop in children’s dramatic play. Standing on both sides, children can wheel and deal, scan products, and develop their language through social interaction.
Tunnel The tunnel promotes physical activity, but also offers a closed-space for conversations and first friendships.
Inclined bridge Children train their gross motor skills as they climb the inclined bridge. Going from one level to another also helps develop their visual perception.
Sand scoops Children train their fine motor skills and understanding of gravity when they manipulate the two sand scoops, pouring the contents of one into the other.
Slide The slide is a classic activity for children, but also one that builds kids’ confidence and encourages risk-taking.

The foundational years SENSORIMOTOR DEVELOPMENT AND PHYSICAL GROWTH
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
Sensorimotor skills require the sense organs, the brain, the nervous system and muscles to work together. For babies maturing into toddlers, playground activities that require crawling, climbing, walking, navigating stairs, squatting and jumping help develop these key gross-motor skills, as well as improve cross-body coordination. In addition, well-designed playgrounds for toddlers afford opportunities for improving balance and spatial awareness, while opportunities for manipulating objects with subtle movements will benefit fine-motor skills. Developmentally appropriate play structures will also support toddlers’ physical growth, affording activities the support muscle strength and bone density.
Toddlers’ maturing minds expand swiftly in understanding and thought. Activities that facilitate children’s development of object permanence, pattern recognition and cause and effect are very beneficial in a play structure. Other beneficial cognitive activities include identifying familiar objects, learning shapes, and problem-solving. As toddlers mature even more, they will begin to play symbolically, in which they use objects in pretend ways.
Beneficial activities and design aspects

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The foundations of language are acquired during the first four years of life. Play structures can support this development by creating spaces where children can interact and play together. When children interact, they are forced to use complex sentences and find words to express themselves and advance play. Activities that require the use of speech, such as talk tubes further encourage speech use. Interesting and curious objects and activities will also encourage verbalisation, such as asking questions, making comments and so on.
Toddlers develop basic social skills during this period and learn to express and sometimes control their increasingly complex emotions. Well-designed play structures should afford play activities that toddlers can perform alongside one another in parallel play, and also opportunities for group play as the children mature. The structure should also offer spaces for small groups of children to socialise in somewhat enclosed privacy, and have activities that require turn-taking so children learn this crucial skill. The structure should also strengthen children’s growing independence by ensuring that activities are challenging without being unachievable.
Beneficial activities and design aspects
Beneficial activities and design aspects
• Talk tubes for speech use
• Panels with enough space for parallel play
• Panels have space for at least two children
• Panels with facial expressions for learning about emotions
• Enclosed spaces and caves for private conversations
• Platforms have enough space for two-three children

Faces
Manipulating the sand cups takes concentration. Children will train their fine motor skills, coordination and understanding of gravity.
This shop counter has space for many children. When group size increases, children use more language and learn the complex rules of social interaction.
This panel helps children learn to differentiate and talk about different emotions. Research shows that children benefit when they can talk about how they feel.
Mailbox
Port with flaps
Port window
This panel features a mailbox for mailing letters (or whatever else children want to put through the mail slot). This encourages dramatic play and social interactions.
This port has rubber flaps that are fun to push through. The port itself functions both as an access to the structure and as a prop in dramatic play.
This window is at child level and facilitates social interactions. It also encourages dramatic play. In our tests, children often used it as a ship’s steering wheel!

Driving
Peek-a-boo
Flowers
This panel features a steering wheel and a gear shift with numbers. While engaged in deep play as racing car or tractor drivers, children will also train their motor skills.
This panel has curtains that children can open and close. For toddlers, playing peek-a-boo strengthens their understanding of object permanence.
This panel features flowers on small axels. They require fine motor skills to manipulate.
Gear Wheels
Abacus
Sand tube
These gears mesmerise children trying to understand how they work and why they click. Don’t be surprised if the gears also become important controls of a ship at sea...
The abacus helps small children develop their concept of numbers. Manipulating the abacus also requires fine motor skills.
Passing sand through the sand tube is endless fun for toddlers. They learn about cause and effect, and their imaginations run wild as they find new, complex ways to play.

Preschool Clock panel
Play value 2-6 years
Learning to tell the time is an important, yet challenging skill for children. This panel allows children to include time-telling in their free play, and our tests showed that children did this diligently.
During the pre-school years, children continue building upon the skills and competences developed during toddlerhood. Having speech, pre-schoolers can express their increasingly complex thoughts and feelings. They are also fiercely independent, feel empathy for others, but often lack the ability to control themselves.
Slide
Experiences and surroundings influence a pre-schooler’s development, and a well-designed playground affords great benefit for the child. The equipment and its surroundings should be designed to facilitate development in the following key areas:
34
•
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
•
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
•
LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
•
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
With a height of 118 cm this slide will give any preschooler a tickle in their tummy. The quick change in height that a slide facilitates also trains children’s spatial awareness.
Curved bridge The curved bridge connecting the two platforms trains children’s balance and spatial awareness. The bridge’s height and open view gives an exciting experience with a high vantage point, and there is room for several users.
Climbing pole This unusual ladder not only helps children climb onto the structure, but also gives them a cognitive challenge. Children will need to think about how they place their feet as they climb, which also trains their cross-coordination.
Driving Children can steer the ship safely into the harbour with the driving panel. The panel comes equipped with a gearshift, and has space for children on both sides of the panel underneath the platform for lots of social play.
35
The preschool years PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
Pre-schoolers build on the basic sensorimotor skills they developed as toddlers. Play structures should provide opportunities to train gross motor skills such as climbing, running and jumping. Play structures should also facilitate the use of fine motor skills such as manipulating objects carefully with the fingers. Additionally, children in this age should train their motor skills such as balance and cross-coordination, and physical challenges should help build muscle strength and bone density.
Children’s brains continue to grow and mature during the preschool years, which is reflected in their improving thinking skills, memory, and perceptual skill. A well-designed play structure should afford changes in height, so children can learn to estimate distances, heights and sizes. The play structure can also work with their grasp of numbers and early mathematical skills such as categorisation. Play structure activities should invite to dramatic play, and can serve as the base for early rule-based games.
Beneficial activities and design aspects
Beneficial activities and design aspects
• Nets and ladders for cross-body coordination and climbing
• Clock panel for numbers and time
• Fireman’s pole for balance and bone density
• Changes in structure height for spatial skills
• Sand scoop panel for fine motor skills
• Ladders, nets and stairs that require extra thought to negotiate
36
LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Children’s acquisition of speech sounds and basic sentence structure is more or less completed by age four, but they still need ample opportunities to learn new vocabulary and use language in an effective, understandable way. Social interactions such as group dramatic play are essential for language development, and the play structure should have space and accessibility for a high volume of children.
During the preschool years, children continue to develop their social interaction skills and ability to control and understand emotions. Well-designed playground structures help support these developments in a number of ways. Children learn to take turns and share the available activities, but popular activities can be made large enough for multiple users. Nets, bridges, platforms – they should all afford space for social interaction. Emotionally, children learn through group play that harmonious play produces more enjoyable play experiences, and they thus learn to control their own negative emotions. Special emotion panels can encourage talking and reflecting over feelings. Finally, a range of challenging but achievable activities support children’s growing independence and self-esteem.

Children are the future – and the future starts now. Children love to play. The more they play, the more they learn – physically, socially, cognitively, creatively and emotionally.
