GW VIEW FROM THE BOARD

Turn the Page By Dan McCarty

I

can’t think of anyone who wasn’t excited to turn the page on the calendar to 2021; 2020 was a year that many would like to forget. There certainly wasn’t a shortage of challenges and obstacles to navigate. As for the AGA Board of Directors, not only did we have our normal business to take care of, but we were also forced to make many difficult decisions because of the COVID19 pandemic. I can assure you that no one was more disappointed than me that we were unable to hold the 50th Annual Convention and celebration in Oklahoma City in 2020. However, our staff did a fantastic job of pivoting and planning the first ever virtual meeting for the Association. It was a difficult task for them to accomplish on such a short notice, and I want to thank them for their hard work and dedication that it took to pull off the event. Additionally, I would like to thank everyone that joined us virtually for the AGA Annual Meeting. It certainly wasn’t the way we had hoped to conduct the business of the Association in 2020. However, if there is one thing we have all learned in the past year, it’s that sometimes you just have to improvise and adapt. Every committee was able to conduct their business, and we ended up with great participation and discussion on the issues that each committee needed to address. While there is always important business to conduct and decisions to be made at the annual convention, for myself and many of the members I have visited with, the one thing that was missed the most, by being forced to hold a virtual event, was the fellowship and networking with breeders and friends from across the county. We all recognize our breed has many strengths and competitive advantages, but the one advantage that rises to the top, for me, are the people that make up the AGA. While the world may have temporarily paused, at times, during the past year, the staff and Board of Directors have been hard at work. AGA continues to work with the International Genetic Solutions MultiBreed Genetic Evaluation to make continual progress to provide more accurate selection tools for both seedstock

6 | JANUARY 2021

and commercial producers. Last year, we were able to make updates to both growth and carcass traits to provide the most accurate selection tools available on the traits that drive the economic engine of our business. The Association also began compiling Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) data, worked with Colorado State University to release a scrotal circumference EPD, kicked off the most aggressive carcass data collection effort in the history of the Association, and found new avenues and partnerships to spread the word of Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics. I would like to recognize Lowell Rogers, DVM for his service the past six years on the AGA Board of Directors. His experience in veterinary medicine, reproduction and Southern Balancer™ cattle brought a great perspective to board business and I always enjoy visiting with Lowell. Additionally, I would like to welcome William McIntosh to the AGA Board. William is no stranger to Gelbvieh breeders and has no shortage of passion for the breed. Looking forward, the year 2021 marks the end of the current five-year strategic plan, “Meeting Modern Industry Demands.” The AGA set some aggressive goals in this plan and have implemented strategies that not only benefit AGA members, our commercial customers, and the Association, but solidifies the AGA as a visionary leader in the beef industry. Some goals were achieved and some were not, that is the nature of a strategic plan. As we press forward to complete the current plan on a high note, we will also get the ball rolling on a new five-year strategic plan that will build a foundation for the AGA for another successful 50 years. There is plenty of work to be done in the coming year and now is an important time for the AGA to press forward on the many initiatives underway. It will also be a year of celebration as June 28, 2021 will mark 50 years since the Articles of Organization of the AGA were filed with the Oklahoma Secretary of State. It is a major milestone for our breed and our Association, and we should all be looking forward to a proper golden anniversary celebration in Oklahoma City later this year. D

GW FROM THE CORNER OFFICE

The Business of Business in a Pandemic By Megan Slater

L

ast month, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) held its 50th annual membership meeting virtually on December 4. Even just writing the sentence seems unreal and certainly not the way anyone would have imagined even just a year ago–2020 was quite the year, and it feels good getting to turn the page onto another year.

we have also seen many changes and challenges: ups and downs in the cattle market, floods, a polar vortex, drought, and a global pandemic, just to name a few. A strategic plan serves as a road map for the Association through the five years the plan is set into place. Strategic planning is critically important for any business and plays a pivotal role in the growth and success of an organization. The plan helps guide the AGA leadership and staff when responding to opportunities and challenges and moving forward in a fast-paced beef industry. As we look at our current strategic plan and the changes we have seen since its inception, development of the next strategic plan becomes even more important. The next strategic plan will need to be forward-thinking and yet flexible enough to adapt to the challenges that are ahead.

Thank you to the members who took the time to join the virtual meetings. Although we were unable to meet in person, that did not mean business couldn’t Although we will begin developing the next strategic still be conducted. Committee meetings where held, plan in 2021, we can not forget the importance of discussion was had, finishing our current plan strong. deserving members There were several goals that were recognized, and have been accomplished, and lthough we will begin developing board members were some that are still being worked the next strategic plan in 2021, elected. Although this toward. A successful strategic was the 50th annual we can not forget the importance of plan can only be made possible membership meeting, by AGA leadership, staff, and finishing our current plan strong. we are not going to the entire membership working miss celebrating AGA’s together to accomplish those golden anniversary goals and ultimately place milestone. Make Gelbvieh and Balancer® in an even better position than plans to join the AGA in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, what it was when the plan was initiated. December 8-10, 2021, for the AGA National Convention If we’ve learned anything from 2020, it is that no one and 50th Anniversary Celebration. knows quite what the future will hold, but we do know 2021 brings the final year of the “AGA Meeting one thing, the AGA will continue to conduct business, Modern Industry Demands” Strategic Plan. This fiveand will continue pursing its mission of recording, year plan was introduced to the membership at the 2016 improving, and promoting Gelbvieh and GelbviehAGA National Convention and there has been a lot of influenced cattle. D work accomplished since that time. Throughout the last five years of this plan’s development and implementation,

2020 AGA Annual Meeting

Annual Meeting Highlights

I

n true 2020 fashion, American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) members gathered at their home or office to attend the 2020 AGA Annual Meeting and committee meetings, which were held virtually on December 4, 2020. The AGA board of directors made the difficult decision this Fall to postpone the association’s 50th anniversary celebration to late 2021 and move to an allvirtual event. The event was originally scheduled to take place December 2-4, 2020, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This decision was made due to increasing COVID-19 restrictions and for the health and safety of all attendees. Despite the trials and tribulations of 2020, Association business was conducted successfully. The event began on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, with a Gelbvieh Happy Hour for members new to the Zoom platform to get more comfortable with attending virtual meetings. It was also a great time for AGA members to catch up with each other in an informal setting. The following day, the AGA board of directors meeting was held.

Committee meetings kicked off the events for Friday, December 4. Important discussions needed to shape the Association’s future were held in each of these committee meetings. An awards presentation was also held to recognize the Commercial Producer of the Year, the Breeder of the Year and the newest inductee into the AGA Hall of Fame. The 2020 AGA Annual Membership Meeting began with a state of the association address by Megan Slater, AGA executive director, along with the president’s message by Dan McCarty, AGA president. AGA business was then conducted, including the AGA board of directors election. The membership also ratified the actions of the 2019-2020 AGA board of directors before the meeting was concluded. The AGA would like to thank all the members who attended the 2020 AGA Annual Meeting and made it a successful event! D

Gelbvieh Association Awards Commercial Producer of the Year

L

oren Fischer of Nevada, Missouri, was honored as the American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) 2020 Commercial Producer of the Year during the awards presentation held virtually on December 4, 2020. The AGA Commercial Producer of the Year Award honors individuals who use Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics in progressive commercial cattle operations and are proactive in their promotion of the Gelbvieh and Balancer breeds. Loren and his wife, Marcy, along with their five children, own and operate Fischer Cattle Company, a diversified cattle and farming operation located in west central Missouri, near the community of Rich Hill. Currently, Fischer Cattle Company runs about 500 commercial cows and replacement females. Like many operations in Missouri, the Fischers split their herd into two calving seasons, with 60% calving in the fall and 40%

calving in the spring. Loren shares that he has been purchasing Balancer bulls for more than six years now and appreciates the added growth and performance he has seen from implementing a crossbreeding program. He notes that introducing Balancer bulls was a smart, profitable and easy choice for him, and has allowed him to maximize hybrid vigor in his herd. “We were looking to make a change and get away from straight Angus; we wanted to see the gains of crossbreeding,” Fischer says, “We have been really happy with our calves. Our goal, just like everybody’s goal, is to put pounds on. We have done that and seen an improvement in the disposition of our calves.” Fischer Cattle Company raises their own replacement heifers, and the added maternal strengths the genetics provide is another area of added value that Loren has found in the incorporation of Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics into his herd. Known for both fertility and stayability, Gelbvieh genetics help to maximize cowherd profitability through good breed back and reproductive longevity. Both traits add up to more live calves on the ground throughout the herd life of a female and translate to increased herd profitability. The Fischers also background their calves and have retained ownership in the feedyard for the last several years, making average daily gain, along with yield and grade, important components in the operation’s profitability.

Overall, Loren says that he is pleased with the results he has been seeing from Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics. And he attributes much of his operation’s genetic improvement and success in the commercial beef industry to the breeds’ genetics. Congratulations to Loren Fischer, Fischer Cattle Company, for winning this prestigious award. D

American Gelbvieh Association Awards 2020 Breeder of the Year

O

n December 4, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) presented the 2020 Breeder of the Year award to SEGA Gelbvieh, owned by Steve and Gail Fiolkoski of Pierce, Colorado. The award was presented during the awards presentation, which was held virtually. Located in short-grass country in Colorado, SEGA Gelbvieh’s seedstock operation specializes in Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics and focuses on producing cattle made for the high mountains and plains. The operation offers a spring bull sale as well as a fall female sale that includes female consignments from other Gelbvieh producers. The operation’s commitment to advancing and expanding sales opportunities for Gelbvieh genetics is exemplified by the Gelbvieh female consignments accepted in the fall females sale each year. By offering consignment opportunities, SEGA Gelbvieh not only creates a premium sales outlet for other producers but expands the reach of Gelbvieh genetics, as well. Since 1990, the Fiolkoskis have served the AGA and its affiliates, as well as several other beef-promoting groups and associations. The many hours of dedication to promoting the Gelbvieh breed are evident in the leadership roles they have served. Over the years, Steve and Gail have been active in AGA, contributing their

2020 AGA Annual Meeting

American Gelbvieh Association Honors Longtime Contributor with Hall of Fame Induction Dr. Glenn Wehner of Rocking GV Gelbvieh in Kirksville, Missouri, was inducted into the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Hall of Fame for 2021. The induction took place during the awards presentation at the AGA Virtual Annual Meeting on December 4, 2020. The AGA Hall of Fame recognizes individuals for lasting contributions to the growth and development of the Gelbvieh breed. Hall of Fame inductee selection requirements include contributions to breed promotion efforts, leadership provided to the association, and the breeding of superior genetics that are of great influence within the Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle population. Dr. Wehner, one of the earliest AGA members, was an agriculture science professor at Truman State University, Kirksville, Missouri, where he introduced hundreds of students to the Gelbvieh breed. He has a Ph.D. in animal nutrition. He developed the first Gelbvieh herd maintained by Truman State University as well as his own fullblood Gelbvieh herd. “We bred purebreds at the time, at the university, and I wanted to stay with purebreds,” said Wehner. “A purebred operation is obviously different than a commercial, but you can teach all the commercial aspects with a purebred herd, so it seemed like a good fit for the university. When I put in my own herd, I decided we would go with fullbloods so that’s where we are today.” Dr. Wehner has seen many positive changes within the breed over the years and has been influential in reducing mature cow size in Gelbvieh cattle. “We’ve seen a lot of positive changes. We’ve stayed on top of the mothering ability, early fertility, pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed, longevity, and those things that definitely have an impact on the bottom line of an operation,” said Wehner.” Along with his wealth of knowledge of the Gelbvieh breed, Dr. Wehner has been involved in many ways with the AGA and the American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) over the years. He has been a promoter of the fullblood Gelbvieh herd book, served on numerous committees and currently serves on the AGF board of directors as

20 | JANUARY 2021

treasurer. With his involvement in the AGF executive committee, he has played an instrumental role in developing the AGA’s 50-year history book. “I think it’s one of those things that gives us the history of the breed in Germany and all the way up to our present time,” said Wehner. “Some of the positive changes we’ve seen are going to be very accepted and highlighted in that book.” Willing to knowledgeably discuss the breed with anyone, Dr. Wehner continues to be an avid proponent of Gelbvieh cattle today and still teaches a few classes at Truman State University. The endeavors and contributions of Dr. Wehner have not only improved the breed, but the association as a whole. “I am profoundly humbled by this nomination,” said Wehner. “When I looked at the line of people ahead of me with this honor, and thought about their contributions, it’s just surreal to be included in that line.” D

A Debt of Gratitude: AGA Celebrates E. Edd Pritchett’s Contributions to the Association

As many of you know, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the American Gelbvieh Association, so it only seemed right to pay homage to a man who played such an instrumental role in AGA from the beginning. The book “Gelbvieh in the US: The Breed. The Association. The People.” shares the compiled history of the AGA and is dedicated to E. Edd Pritchett. Teres Lambert shares in the book’s dedication excerpts below the foundational role Edd played in the formation and continued success of AGA: “In 1971, Edd was a go-getter attorney who had recently entered private practice when Mitch Dobson, a fellow Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity brother, called and asked if he would write the Articles of Incorporation for a new national beef breed association. Edd embraced the challenge. In addition to writing the AGA’s Articles of Incorporation, Edd was also instrumental in researching and writing the AGA’s first set of Bylaws and Rules. He then became the AGA’s Legal Counsel, attending nearly every Board of Directors meeting. At Edd’s side, assisting him with the AGA work, was his wife, Susie. Ever so important to the AGA Board of Directors were the introductory words of wisdom that every newcomer to the Board received from Edd during orientation, traditionally conducted the day before the first full Board meeting. Edd wanted to be certain every Board member understood his/her role and the need for keeping collective goals ahead of personal goals. He spelled out the basic principles of being a Board member like no other could, and these principles had a profound impact on the performance of Board members as well as their behavior, even their personal lives.” Edd served as the legal counsel for AGA from 1971 until 2014. A true supporter of the breed, Edd is recalled by many who had the opportunity to serve and work

Photo of Edd, Al and Mary Knapp with him as fun-loving and direct, only voicing concern when he believed the Board was crossing a line. To honor Edd, Al and Mary Knapp, Triple K Gelbvieh of Basehor, Kansas, traveled to Kingfisher, Oklahoma, during the last week of November to present him with the first commemorative 50th-anniversary book. PreCOVID-19, Edd’s service’s celebration was scheduled to be held in conjunction with the AGA National Convention in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. AGA had hoped to present the book to Edd with his family, friends, and AGA board members, past and present, in attendance. “We were honored to be able to present Edd with the first history book,” Al said. “Edd’s son, daughter, and grandkids were there and had set-up the occasion under the ruse of taking a family photo. It was a great day.” Commemorative AGA history books may be ordered by contacting the AGA office and offered on a first-come, first-served basis with a suggested donation of $35 and the required $15 shipping fee. GW JUNIOR NEWS

AGJA Seeks All-Around Award Sponsor

The American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) continues to serve more than 350 members annually throughout the U.S. Of those members, on average, more than one third will attend the annual AGJA Junior Classic held each summer. We, the elected board of directors of the AGJA, strive to uphold the vision and mission of the AGJA in all that we do:

Vision: To unify, educate and develop leaders of the beef industry. Mission: By instilling a sense of responsibility, dedication, pride, and professionalism, we develop and enhance the leadership and education of our members, stressing the importance of ethical practices in marketing a sound philosophy for the future of the beef industry.

Each year AGJA members from across the country gather for a week of friendship, growth and competition both in and out of the ring. Participants are encouraged to engage in any of the twelve contests held, in addition to showing cattle, at the Junior Classic. For the past eight years, Eagle Pass Ranch of Highmore, South Dakota, has provided a heifer to the winner of the All-Around Contest at each summer’s Junior Classic. The AGJA cannot thank Eagle Pass Ranch enough for their contribution over the years and continued support of this program. We wish them the best of luck! However, due to their recent Gelbvieh and BalancerŽ dispersal they have elected to give another operation the opportunity to support the AGJA in a similar fashion. With that, we are excited to announce the opportunity for a new name to grace the AGJA program. By donating a heifer, an operation will have the opportunity to showcase their genetics by providing future winners of the AGJA All-Around Exhibitor with a heifer. Following the AGJA Online Fundraiser, held March 25-28, 2021, the names of those interested in serving as the All-Around Exhibitor sponsor will be added to a list and a name will be randomly selected. The AGJA will open up this sponsorship opportunity each year to allow new families to contribute. To keep the opportunity fair to all interested individuals, we ask for those who wish to contribute in such manner to contact an acting AGJA board member, or Jake Renner, AGA youth and membership activities coordinator, with any questions you may have. As our AGJA program continues to grow and strive for excellence in providing an inclusive atmosphere for the next generation of industry leaders, we appreciate and recognize each of our supporting members and contributors. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely, AGJA Board of Directors

GW REGISTRY TIPS ‘N TRICKS

Find an AI sire or Donor Dam By Taylor Buckley

T

his issue of the Gelbvieh World is all about AI sires and it’s our goal at the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) to make it easy for members and non-members to find bulls that are qualified to sell semen according to AGA criteria. The AGA Online Registry Service has many benefits for active AGA members as well as commercial producers. Amongst the many things you can search in the registry, the AGA has a section where you can look to see what bulls qualify to be AI sires, as well as, which donor cows qualify to register embryo transfer (ET) calves. The AGA has several requirements in place for the elite animals in the registry. These requirements include: All AI sires and donor dams must be tested with a GGPHD, be parent-verified, and tested for all four monitored genetic conditions. Once these criteria are met the AGA will issue a permit on these animals.

To look for a list of qualified AI sires or donor dams, visit the AGA website and then select the registry login from the page selections at the top. Once at the home page of the registry, choose the section titled “for your information” in the drop-down menu choose either “AI Permit Sires and ET Donor Cows”. Each option will provide a comprehensive list of those respective animals. From each list you may print a PDF or download a spreadsheet. The process is very user-friendly. You don’t even need an AGA password or username to access the lists. There are many instances where an AGA member wants to purchase semen and also register those AI calves without any errors. This new AI permit search function list allows a producer to pick a bull or cow that is qualified in the AGA system. If a member is looking at purchasing embryos to be able to register ET calves, they may use the donor dam list to make sure the donor cow is qualified to register ET calves. This search tool is also beneficial for commercial producers. Commercial producers have the convenience of browsing the list of AI sires to find a sire that fits their needs. The AGA cannot stress enough: if you are considering having a bull collected or a female flushed, it is very important that you take the steps to ensure the animal meets the Association’s requirements. The AGA hopes you find this tool useful when doing your research on Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals. D

2021 Herd Assessments By Taylor Buckley

A

new year means a fresh start to a new years’ worth of records. Along with health and sale records, it is essential to keep up with which females are active in your herd. The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) refers to this recordkeeping as the annual herd assessment. The $25 per head annual herd assessment fee applies to females over 13 months of age and is the foundation of AGA’s total herd reporting. Herd assessments are now open until the deadline of March 15, 2021, in the AGA Online Registry Service. Accessing the Herd Assessment: First, log into your account and find the red “Herd Management” tab on the left work menu. This will give you the option to click the green “Inventory”. Once in Inventory you will have access to all of the females for the herd assessment process. On this screen find “Assessment-Age” in the white tabs that run across the top of the screen. Under this tab is a list of all females that are of breeding age, or that would be expected to calve in the upcoming year. For any young heifers that may not be 13 months of age as of January 1, but are expected to have a calf in the upcoming year, look under “Optional Females”. Completing Herd Assessments and Culling Cows: As you view the list of assessment-age females, you now have the ability to cull cows that are no longer active in your herd and record any exposure data that you may not have yet recorded. To dispose of a female, click on the grey trash can to the right of her birthdate. Use the

HERD ASSESSMENT GW

dropdown menu to select the specific reason code to describe why she is no longer in the herd. Next, click the green checkmark to lock that selection in. Remember, annual herd assessments should not be used as a tool to skip a year of calving for a cow. To keep our data as honest and accurate as possible, please record all calves born throughout the year. If you do try to skip a year of calving information for a cow, you will have to pay for all of the years that she has been “disposed of ” to record future progeny. After making all necessary culls and disposals you can select each cow individually by clicking the “2021” button in the “Assess for” column or complete all cows at one time by clicking “Complete yearly HAS process – Assess all for 2021” at the top of the page under “Assessment-Age”. After completing your assessment, pay your balance online by following the pop-up box that takes you to a checkout screen. You have 30 days to pay any balance incurred on your account. The association does require exposure data to be recorded on all first-calf heifers. There is a box next to all heifers expected to have their first calf in 2021. If the heifer was exposed to a bull or AIed, simply check the box “AI” “PE” or “No”. As always, if you ever run into problems or questions, call the office, 303-465-2333 and we would be happy to help you. If you need to request a printed herd assessment form, please request that in plenty of time to receive it, complete it, and get it back into the office before the March 15, 2021 deadline. D

GW DATA BULLETIN

Data Reporting: Getting Back to the Basics

by Tonya Amen

I

n our technology-driven world of the 21st century, cattle breeders have a plethora of tools in the toolbox for genetic selection, and often the discussion of some of the more modern technologies overshadows the basics. So, this month, we want to focus on the basics, to make sure we are still getting them right. There is still tremendous power in performance data reporting. In fact, reporting that data completely and accurately is more important than ever. One of the greatest sources of error in performance data reporting is improper contemporary grouping. Keep in mind that the purpose of submitting performance data on seedstock is to evaluate the genetic difference between individuals. That said, we need to be sure that the data submitted is as free from environment and management noise as possible. This is where contemporary group (CG) reporting comes into play. A contemporary group is simply a group of cattle that have had the same opportunity to express their genetic potential. This means animals of the same sex, born and raised at the same place and treated the same way get reported together. It also means the dams of all calves in the CG were treated the same way.. One potential issue in contemporary grouping is grouping animals that have had different planes of nutrition. This difference could be due to different pasture conditions from one location to another or supplemental feeding of some animals and not others. Animals from different pastures should be in different CGs. Also, if any animal or its dam received supplemental feed or creep feed, that was not offered to the whole group, they need to be in a separate CG. Below are some other important factors to keep in mind when reporting CG. Management and feed codes are used to denote those animals who were managed alike (same pasture) or different (creep vs noncreep or treated for illness, etc). Table 1: Factors for reporting CG

32 | JANUARY 2021

consequences.

In addition to grouping the animals correctly, another important factor is the complete reporting of the entire group. While there is the temptation to only report “the best”, succumbing to this temptation can have negative

For example, in the below table, the adjusted weaning weights of 10 animals are listed in order from lightest to heaviest. The average weaning weight for the entire group is about 716 pounds, while the average of the heaviest five is about 752 pounds. It seems like reporting an average weaning weight of 752 would be better than 716, right? Not so fast! Let’s dig a little deeper. The middle columns in Table 2 show the deviation from group average and ratio for each animal if all 10 animals are reported. The last two columns show the deviations from average and ratio if only the “best” five are reported. Incomplete reporting has negatively impacted the ratio of every single animal in the group, which directly translates to the EPD computation of that animal as well as the sire and dam. So, while a heavier group average might be great for coffee shop bragging, the incomplete reporting has negatively impacted the ultimate genetic prediction results for the entire group –which is nothing to brag about. Table 2. Complete vs Incomplete Weight reporting.

While we live in a technology-driven world, it’s still important to remember that the basics matter now more than ever, because it’s the basic data that gets used to develop and train the technology (like genomics). As we move into the season of reporting data, let’s remember that eventually an animal’s EPD and genomics will be derived from the data we collect and report. This calving season, let’s be sure to refresh diligence in reporting correctly collected, correctly grouped, and complete data. D

GW JUNIOR CONNECTION

Painless Repro Planning

by Madalynn Welsh

In the absence of a live calf, all other production variables have no value.” – Dr. Dan Kniffen, assistant professor, Penn State University and owner of Windy Butte Ranch. As producers, thoughts of the tasks that need to be done crowd our thoughts. Fixing fence, moving hay, registering calves, ordering semen, the list goes on and on. A successful operation wouldn’t be possible if we didn’t efficiently complete these tasks, and therefore we’re hardwired to maximize efficiency. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day of raising beef cattle, and it’s far too easy to let some important management opportunities slip through the cracks. Dan Kniffen’s quote at the beginning of this article is a simple motto that can help bring things back into perspective. At the end of the day, our main goal as beef producers is to produce a live calf for every bred female in our operation every year. To attain this goal, no matter the size of your operation, you need a solid breeding program. In this article, I will discuss how to build and implement a reproduction plan tailored to your operation.

Step One: Set Goals 1. Write it Down: Although it seems mundane, physically writing out what you want to achieve is often the first step in actually achieving it. 2.

Be Specific: As a producer, you know what you want to see from your operation in the next year. Don’t be afraid to include specifics to keep you on-target—sometimes success is in the details. Examples include limiting calving season to a 90-day window, culling cows based on docility and sub-par reproductive traits, raising calves with above average weaning weights and/or generating a crop of bulls to sell to commercial producers.

Step Two: Map It Out. 1. Make a Pasture Plan: Map out where each animal, or group of animals, will be throughout the year.

34 | JANUARY 2021

Be specific and include the group of animals you are talking about, the location they will be, and the duration for which they will stay. Note: Utilizing the pasture grouping tool available in the AGA Online Registry Service can be helpful during this process.

2.

Create a Breeding Schedule: For each pasture, add when they will be bred, preg-checked and when their calves will be weaned. Don’t forget to include any other important dates for your goals— try to include actual dates, this will help with timing and preparation. Example: Group A (20 pairs, 5-year-olds) will arrive at Pasture 1 on May 1. Group A will be AI’ed on June 15, their calves will be weaned on September 15, they will be moved to cornfield B on October 15, and the cows will be pregnancy checked on November 15.

Step Three: Communicate Creating a plan is a waste of time if you’re the only one sticking to it. Sit down with everyone who has a role in your operation and explain the operation’s goals and the plan that is currently in place to meet those goals. Ensure that everyone knows the role they are expected to play in making the plan come to life.

Step Four: Stick To It. Post the plan in an area that it will be viewed by everyone on the team daily. This could be on the refrigerator or in the feed room. Having the plan written out and in a place it will be noticed will allow your team to always keep in mind what the next step is to keep everyone on track. Writing out a plan may not seem essential if you already have a system, but it can provide a way for you to improve your current methods of operation. For me, it always helps to bring the main goal back into perspective: putting a live calf on the ground each year. D

AGA Modifies Breed Percentage Acceptance

O

n January 1, 2021, the AGA removed the Gelbvieh % classification on all animals within the AGA Online Registry Service and is now only publishing breed percentage on animals in the herdbook. Animals will still be designated as fullblood, purebred, Balancer®, and Southern Balancer™ if they fall into that appropriate category (see below). This label will be noted on the animal’s detail screen as well as on the animal’s registration certificate. All other animals will simply have “American Gelbvieh Association Registration Certificate” at the top of their paper. • Animals that are 100% Gelbvieh will be designated as “Fullblood”.

• Southern Balancer designation and trademark are staying the same. o

A Southern Balancer is an animal that contains a minimum 25% Gelbvieh with 6.25% to 50% tropically adapted breed or combination of tropically adapted breeds.

• Animals not qualifying under these four categories will have “American Gelbvieh Association Registration paper” at the top of the certificate.

• Animals that are 81.6% to 99.9% Gelbvieh will be designated as “Purebred Gelbvieh”. o Animals that are 91.1% to 99.9% Gelbvieh contribute 50% Gelbvieh breed composition to their offspring.

• Balancer designation and trademark is staying the same. o

Balancer cattle are a combination of 25% to 75% Gelbvieh with the remaining 25% to 75% Angus or Red Angus and a maximum of 12.5% unknown or other breed. Both parents must be registered.

GW OUT IN THE FIELD

Comparing Service Type Return on Investment by Tom Strahm

D

uring 2019 and 2020, the AGA began to gather sale results of registered Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle sold at public auction. Sale prices of individual lots were obtained from breeders and collected from online auction websites. The information in this database is used to identify price trends and provide insight into what traits are collectively important to buyers. Results from 41 sales were collected and entered into the database in 2020, to total 3,142 individual prices reported. Of that total number of animals, 2,671 bulls and 471 females were reported. A full analysis of 2020 sale prices can be found in the December 2020 Gelbvieh World. One area of analysis looks at the service type of the sale animals and what effect that has on sale prices. The following breakouts are provided: 47% of the animals were sired by Natural Service (NS) • 40% of the animals were the result of Artificial Insemination (AI) • 13% of the sale animals were the result of Embryo Transfer (ET)

The 2020 sale animals sired by artificial insemination averaged $768 more than the animals sired by natural service. The average sale price for animals resulting from Embryo Transfer was $1,214 more than Natural Service animals.

Artificial insemination is one of the most effective tools available to cattle producers. The technology both speeds up genetic progress and improves the productivity and profitability of a cattle operation. I encourage all seedstock producers to review their operations and management practices to evaluate current AI program successes and efficacies. Looking at these collective numbers from sale data analysis provides every operation the opportunity to increase return. In the end, a few breeding management changes could position an operation to raise more sale cattle sired by artificial insemination, which could provide an additional $700-$800 per head! D

champion Gelbvieh steer in the carcass value category with an animal that valued at $1,593.70. This steer also posted $436.50 for an increase in value. They also had the champion Gelbvieh steer in the average daily gain category with an animal that gained 4.40 pounds per day.

The AGF continues to help advance the Gelbvieh and BalancerÂŽ breeds through its support of research and development. For this reason, the AGF launched the Steer Challenge and Scale and Rail Sire-Identified Carcass Contest in 2016. These two projects, together, provide the information and funds necessary to generate data sets to advance Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass merit.

CKS Gelbvieh also owned the champion pen of Gelbvieh steers in the Scale and Rail Contest with a total carcass value of $4,323.56. AMGV1395460 (CKS LEGACY E64), owned by CKS Gelbvieh, Collins, Iowa, sired the pen of three steers. This group of steers averaged a marbling score of USDA Choice, Yield Grade 3, with a 15.98 square inch ribeye and 944-pound average hot carcass weight. In total, CKS Gelbvieh took home $1,500 in prize money.

The AGF Steer Challenge is a competition amongst individual Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced steers in which the judging criteria focuses on carcass value and average daily gain in the feedyard. The Steer Challenge gives an opportunity for participants to donate a steer to the AGF. All proceeds from the donation go toward research and development within the breed. Green Hills Gelbvieh, Mount Ulla, North Carolina, and Flying H Genetics, Arapahoe, Nebraska, each donated a steer to the AGF this year. Thank you for your generosity. The champion steer for carcass value in the steer challenge contest was owned by Flying H Genetics. This steer had a total carcass value of $1,582.92 and graded USDA Choice. Flying H also took home champion steer for average daily gain in the steer challenge contest. This animal gained 3.93 pounds per day; the calves were on feed for 205 days. In its fifth year, seven ranches participated in the contests at Darr Feedlot in Cozad, Nebraska. All steers were harvested in July 2020 with a total of 133 individual carcass data records. CKS Gelbvieh of Collins, Iowa, won big at this event, taking home three of the five prizes in the Gelbvieh division of the Scale and Rail Sire-Identified Carcass Contest. CKS Gelbvieh had the

In the Balancer division, Eagle Pass Ranch of Highmore, South Dakota, won champion steer in the carcass value category. This steer valued at $1,637.29.
