GW view from the board

Fulfilling the Plan One Step at a Time By Neal Pearson

F

our years ago the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Board of Directors took on the challenge of developing a long-range strategic plan. This process took time and the collaborative effort of the staff, board and Dr. Jim Gibb in the role of facilitator. The purpose for this was to give the Association a road map to follow in order to identify new programs that could improve our position within the industry, member services, education, promotion and financial standing. Not only does it give us a road map for improvement, it also allows the tracking of progress in those identified areas of importance.

profitability of the industry. The Maternal Edge Female panel fits the bill. The Smart Select Service program offers genetic tools for commercial producers and allows the tracking of genetic trends that pertain to cowherd performance as it relates to the feeder profit index (FPI) and $Cow index, as well as feedlot and carcass performance. These are now in place but will require continued input and changes to adapt to industry demands. The area of breed improvement is an ongoing process that will need to be supported by the programs of the business plan, member education, promotion, youth development and the American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF).

So as we compare present with the past, and especially when there was no strategic plan in place, we see the need for and the impact of such a plan as it relates to an organization’s future. In the new plan, I feel we must continue to include the areas of breed improvement, education, promotion and youth development. Within these plans he area of breed improvement is an ongoing the membership, staff and the process that will need to be supported by the board of directors will determine programs of the business plan, member education, the area of high priority.

T

promotion, youth development and the American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF). Today, some of the priorities and goals have been completed and others are on the way to fulfillment. For instance, while the goal of owning maternal efficiency is ongoing, significant gains have been made. Genomic-Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) are now in place. Ways to monitor traits for maternal efficiency have been completed; the heifer pregnancy (HP) EPD, pregnancy at 30 months (PG30) EPD, and the $Cow index are now in place. In addition, two other programs, the Maternal Edge Female Panel and Smart Select Service programs have been launched. Each of these selection aids focused on the females will help the AGA to own maternal efficiency. The ability to identify those females that have the best reproductive traits of pregnancy and stayability are today recognized as the most important to the future

6 | MARCH 2016

To accomplish this, the board and staff may put together a member survey. The response from the last survey was instrumental in recognizing the areas of most importance for the membership.

Just like our theme for convention, “Moving at the Speed of Change”, our strategic plan must be visionary enough in its design to keep up with the speed of change and recognize new challenges and opportunities. With our focus on the future we can expand the impact of Gelbvieh and Balancer® and their impact on the beef business. D

What does the AGA do with Your Herd Assessment Dollar?

A

s a member of the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) do you ever wonder, “What does the AGA do with the dollars collected for herd assessments (HAS)?” HAS is an important number to contemplate, as it constitutes nearly 70 percent of the total revenue of the AGA. This contemplation has direct influence on the reason to participate as a member of the AGA. Certainly, as with any business or organization, its purpose revolves around the customers’ or members’ desire and drive to pay for goods or services rendered by that business or organization. Conversations with several of the AGA’s roughly 1,000 adult members reveals a variety of potential reasons why folks are driven to become vital participants in the seedstock industry; more specifically, why they become or remain a member of the AGA. The focal points that modern cattle breed associations gravitate toward are very different than they were 25, 10 or even five years ago. The need to lead future change in our business has been clearly established. (See my February 2016 Profit Picture article “Leading with a Vision for Change”) Lets begin with the decision-making process regarding budgeting and financial allocation. What guides the staff and board through that process? The AGA strategic plan is ultimately responsible for directing leadership to determine focal points of the organization. As those focal points are determined, appropriate allocation of AGA dollars can be assigned in the necessary areas. Many correspondence from the AGA office through the Gelbvieh World, e-Newsletters and Corner Office messages to the membership within the last 18 months, has spoken of how AGA leadership has intensified the allocation process in the form of multi-year business planning. Now, more than ever, forecast preparation is imperative in the very basis for our business—beef cattle genetics. That forecasting necessity speaks loudly for the intensified need to strategically plan and financially plan far in front of today’s needs. The workforce in any business, including your individual farm and ranch operations, almost always commands budgetary priority. The perception of that workforce priority should be viewed as an asset to the AGA. There

8 | MARCH 2016

is no question that the ability, mindset and accomplishments of the current AGA staff, on the AGAs behalf, clearly displays beneficiary results for the association. AGA staff is involved in organizations that influence the scientific community such as the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF), International Genetic Solutions (IGS) and research universities. Marketing staff has direct project involvement with NCBA, Cattle-Fax as well as industry partners such as Superior Livestock Auction. Involvement in these organizations creates unlimited potential for the association as well as you the member of the AGA. Are you capitalizing on those opportunities the AGA staff has established for you? Operations of the AGA are obviously another primary component of financial planning. Facilities, equipment, electronics and intellectual property constitute a portion of “overhead” expenditures. The AGA business plan suggests careful consideration of facility ownership versus a leased facility. Leasing may potentially contribute a near 10 percent reduction in that operational overhead. The database is the foundation of a breed association existence and is included in operational cost. The AGA Online Registry Service is very quickly returning not only more information to AGA members, but also more access to that information. Even more importantly, it’s a more efficient means of recording data by each individual member, which directly results in less staff focus on recordation. Staff may then turn their attention toward improved accuracy of information, program development and marketing of Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics. Marketing is a constant consideration for the leadership of the AGA during the business planning process. The board and staff have made disciplined marketing a priority. In fact, the total marketing budgetary focus has increased by nearly 10 percent for the 2016 fiscal year. Greater efforts than ever before are made toward measuring the return of each promotional endeavor. Consider that the first ever Gelbvieh American Rancher episode aired on February 22, 2016. Prior to the commitment from the AGA board and staff to produce a Gelbvieh American Rancher series, a demographic analytic report revealed that nearly 2 million viewers tune into watch American Rancher series during the month of February. The staff has a deliberate and practical approach toward pull through marketing efforts. The $mart Select Service offered to commercial bull customers is a very beneficial

tool for ranchers in terms of genetically managing their respective cowherds. Increasing the opportunity for the profitability of our commercial bull customers, by assisting them with genetic improvement with $mart Select Service, directly makes their replacement females and feeder cattle more valuable. Beneficial customer service that potentially results in opportunity for profitability, such as $mart Select Service, is a textbook example of pull through marketing effort. Astute financial decision-making that reduces operational expenditures allows for more emphasis to be directed toward member programs, the improvement of data and tools and marketing of Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics. Each member gets to choose annually the level of participation within the AGA. Let’s weigh the return value of being an active AGA member to each of our respective farms and ranches. An important question should be pondered, “What decisions can I make that will benefit and improve my cows, my operation, the AGA and Gelbvieh genetics in its entirety?” The answer is very clear and three fold; an increase in cowherd inventory directly results in the collection of more phenotypes and potentially enlarged

contemporary groups. More data magnifies the accuracy of the entire Gelbvieh database population. In turn, that increased accuracy of information improves the accuracy of your cattle EPDs. Increased accuracy of EPDs increases the value of yours and your customer’s cattle. Finally, a larger cow inventory results in increase revenue to the AGA. That increase in revenue is returned to each member in the form of tools such as the online registry, member and customer programs like $mart Select Service and greater visibility to Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle through the intensified marketing efforts made by the AGA. Each member is asked to carefully consider the benefit to enlarged cowherd inventory by participating in whole reporting and maximizing your membership in the American Gelbvieh Association. Sincerely,

Myron Edelman AGA Executive Director

GW information exchange Get Ready for the 2016 AGJA Junior Classic It is already 2016 and in a just a few short months we will be trying to find a cool spot in Stillwater, dreaming of eating Eskimo Joe’s famous cheese fries, watching the AGJA’s Jr. Classic on America’s 240th birthday, touring the Oklahoma State University’s campus and of course, showing cattle. The AJGA Dirt Road Classic will be in Stillwater, OK Sunday July 3-8, 2016. This “Little Show on the Prairie” is shaping up to be a great show. It is jointly hosted by Oklahoma and Kansas Junior Gelbvieh Associations and is going to highlight the best Junior Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle anywhere. With all that is going on we are preparing for the best Junior Classic you could hope for. The Payne County Expo Center is one of the best in the country. July in Oklahoma can be challenging, to say the least. Hot, hazy and humid weather is on tap for the monumental event, but Okie hospitality and Jayhawk attitude will make you want to stay in the fly-over states. Get those calves ready and make plans now to compete in the red dirt! On behalf of the OJGA and KJGA, we are looking forward to seeing everyone in Stillwater, Oklahoma during the first weekend in July. Macy Shoulders, OJGA reporter

Diehl Cattle Company Awarded Cattlemen’s Seedstock Producer of the Year The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) awarded Charlie, Jordan, and Scott Diehl, owners of Diehl Cattle Company of Bradford, Ohio, the Seedstock Producer of the Year Award at the OCA awards banquet held Jan. 23, 2016, at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center in Lewis Center, Ohio. OCA and Farm World jointly sponsor the Seedstock

Producer of the Year Award, which was created to recognize top beef seedstock producers in Ohio. The award was presented in a video that was sponsored by Darke County Veterinary Services and Fulton Road Genetics and can be found on OCA’s YouTube channel. Diehl Cattle Company began with six registered Gelbvieh cows, has grown to a herd of 200 cows, and today is one of the top seedstock producers in western Ohio. The bulls are marketed in Missouri at SeedstockPlus, a network comprised of cattlemen from around the country marketing elite breeding cattle. Charlie credited their success with the seedstock program to the networking opportunities they’ve had with others. The family also has a construction business, but in the future the family is hoping to rely more on the cattle operation. Scott said, “Our goal is to always try to improve our cow herd.” The Diehl family’s dedication to improving their herd has been recognized by cattlemen throughout Ohio and across the country.

$mart Select Service Vouchers The AGA is now offering Smart Select Service vouchers for breeders to distribute to their customers during bull sale season and all throughout the year. These vouchers are available in $50 or $100 increments and breeders are not charged unless the producer returns the completed voucher to the AGA office before the expiration date. Breeders are only charged for the number of females enrolled by the producer receiving the voucher if the number of head falls below the voucher amount. GW 45th Annual AGA National Convention

Recapping the 45th Annual AGA National Convention By Rebecca Mettler

T

he excitement and energy surrounding the 45th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention and Annual Meeting was a welcome sight. The convention themed “Moving at the Speed of Change,” was aptly named, as it was the first standalone convention held in recent AGA history. It was held in Kansas City, Missouri at the Embassy Suites Kansas CityInternational Airport hotel, December 10–12, 2015. The final count of registered attendees reached 115 traveling from 23 states and two Canadian provinces.

Member participation at the convention was increased at several events including the Annual Meeting and AGA committee meetings held on Thursday and Friday when compared to previous years. And as the inaugural year for events such as AGA 101 and the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup; the 45th Annual AGA National Convention and Annual Meeting provided an event to interest each AGA member in attendance.

AGA Annual Meeting and AGA Awards Luncheon The AGA Annual Meeting was held at 1:30 p.m. CST on Friday, December 11, 2015. Membership attendance to this meeting was more than doubled compared to the previous year’s meeting held in Denver, Colorado during the National Western Stock Show. Association business during the Annual Meeting included the election of the AGA Board of Directors for 2016 as well as committee meeting reports, the State of the Association address by AGA president, Neal Pearson and Myron Edelman, AGA executive director. Prior to the Annual Meeting was the Awards Luncheon celebrating the success of a great year for the association. Awards for the AGA Hall of Fame inductee, Commercial Producer of the Year and Member of the Year were some of the highlights

16 | MARCH 2016

during the luncheon.

AGA 101 New to the convention event lineup was AGA 101. Headlining the discussion was a panel of AGA Board of Director members including retiring board member Brian Dunn, St. John, Kansas; Emily Griffiths, Kendallville, Indiana; Dustin Rippe, Belleville, Kansas; and retiring Vice President Dan Warner, Beaver City, Nebraska. Each board member shared the story of how they became involved in the AGA and what experiences led them to becoming proactive members of the association and eventually, service on the AGA Board of Directors. A common theme among the panel participants was a deep running love for the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed as well as a message to urge members to become more involved in the AGA.

Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup The Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup was the culminating event for the AGA convention. This free to attend symposium took place on Saturday, December 12, 2015 and featured industry leading speakers who provided insight to the various sectors of business within the commercial cattle industry. It was a fitting conclusion to a busy few days of Association planning and decision-making. This event solidified the importance the commercial beef industry has on the success of the AGA and it’s membership. It’s always important to remember the success of the commercial cattle producers directly impacts AGA members and the Association. Keynote speaker, Ronnie Green, Ph.D., University of Nebraska-Lincoln, spoke about the challenges facing the beef industry. His goal was to provide attendees with thought provoking topics and begin the solution-type thought processes that need to take place in order for the beef industry to meet upcoming demands. In the first of two panel sessions, titled “My Cows Last a Lifetime Panel: Giving Your Cows the Maternal Edge,” was chock-full of useful information regarding cowherd efficiency and stayablity. Larry Kuehn, Ph.D., research geneticist with U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, thinks of cowherd efficiency from a data and scientific standpoint and he encourages cattle producers to think of efficiency with a biological

45th Annual AGA National Convention GW focus based on lifetime performance of the cowherd. Bill Tucker, of Amherst, Virginia, a progressive commercial cow-calf producer, spoke about his extensive data collection along with his use of livestock observation skills to assess his herd’s longevity.

of Change”. The AGA staff has already begun the task of planning for the 46th Annual AGA National Convention, which will be held in Nebraska! AGA has a goal to continue to improve next year’s convention to make it bigger and better! D

To round out the morning, Kelli Retallick, AGA director of member programs, spoke about AGA’s new Smart Select Service program. After lunch the second panel session. “Worth My Weight in Gold Panel: Multiplying Dollars Available for Cattle at Each Stage of the Supply Chain” was focused on marketing feeder cattle and the beef production side of the business. Scott Hamilton, of Hitchcock, South Dakota spoke about individual data collection from the cowherd level up through weaning, feedyard performance and carcass information. Greg Foote with Foote Cattle Company talked about his family’s business operations and said that feed efficiency is the main goal in their feedyards. Brian Bertelsen, with U.S. Premium Beef, LLC. described how the company has ownership in the National Beef Packing Company, LLC which specializes in value-added products. Bertelsen explained how the value-added products tie into data management on the producer side. Extensive coverage of the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup can be found in the February 2015 issue of AGA’s The Profit Picture publication.

Thank you, AGA members! Again, THANK YOU to all who took the time to attend the 45th Annual AGA National Convention- “Moving at the Speed

he American Gelbvieh Association recognized Scott Hamilton, Hamilton Farms, Hitchcock, South Dakota, as the 2016 AGA Commercial Producer of the Year. Hamilton received this award on Friday, December 11 during the awards luncheon at the 45th Annual AGA National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Steve Munger, Highmore, South Dakota presented Hamilton with this award. The AGA understands the importance of commercial producer within the industry and recognizes a commercial producer within the Gelbvieh breed.

progressive commercial operation with his wife, Paula. The Hamiltons feed their own steer and heifer progeny and retain ownership of their cattle to sell on an individual carcass merit program. Hamilton works hard at collecting as much as data possible on his cattle in order to use these animals’ full genetic potential to capture premiums with grid marketing. “Scott is one of those people who recognized the value of heterosis and Gelbvieh/Angus genetics before we were even registering Balancer cattle,” Munger said. “He dates back quite a ways with the breed and with hybrid genetics.” In addition, Hamilton has been an outstanding advocate and spokesperson for Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. harles Clark, Keldron, South Dakota, was inducted into the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Hall of Fame posthumously for 2016. The induction took place on Friday, December 11 during the awards luncheon at the 45th Annual AGA National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Charles’ family, including wife Peggy and children Amy, Clint, and Scot, were present at convention to accept the award. Jim Beastrom, Pierre, South Dakota presented the Clark family with this award. The AGA Hall of Fame recognizes individuals for their lasting contribution to the growth and development of the Gelbvieh breed. That contribution is through the influence of cattle they have bred, their breed promotion efforts, and leadership provided to the association.

hosted their first production sale in 1979 and offered 24 registered bulls and 25 commercial females. At the time, no other Gelbvieh operation had a production sale. The operation hosted an annual production sale until the complete dispersal of the 350-head ranch in 1990. Clark was very progressive and used artificial insemination extensively in his operation, seeing the benefit of being able to make faster genetic progress. Once the ranch was established, Clark collected and marketed semen from his own bulls. Clark was a community leader and served on the AGA Board of Directors and was president of the Association in 1983. In addition, he also served his community on the local school board, 4-H Leader’s Association, Farm Service Agency and rural electric boards D

GW registry tips ‘n tricks

Pasture Grouping: The Hidden Gem in the AGA Registry System By Kari White

1. Log in to your AGA online registry account. Navigate to ‘Pasture Groups’.

A

re you utilizing the pasture group function on the AGA online registry service? The pasture grouping function can make recording exposure data, vaccination history, or pasture movement easy in the AGA Registry System. There is an easy way to record pasture exposure data on these animals by simply moving herd sires in an out of pasture groups. See the information below on how to move bulls in and out of a pasture to automatically add pasture exposure data to females in those groups. 3. This will move the bull into the respective pasture at the specified date.

2. Enter the ‘In date’ when a natural service sire was added to the pasture. Select the pasture to be moved into. Select the natural service sire to be added to the pasture. If you have multiple sires that were added to the pasture at the same time you can add all bulls at the same time. Hit move.

22 | MARCH 2016

4. When finished with the breeding season, move this bull out of the pasture and into a holding pasture for instance. Add the appropriate ‘Out Date’ when the bull was removed from the pasture. The pasture to be moved into and the natural service sire is removed.

5. The bull will now be moved out of pasture and all females that were in the same pasture will now have pasture exposure breeding data added to their records.

6. If you navigate to an individual female breeding screen you can see that the pasture exposed breeding data has been added to her records.

7. Add group AI information the same way by selecting the AI date, animals, and AI sire to Apply AI Breedings at one time.

Quick Tips for Creating a New Pasture Group 1. Login 2. Go to “Pastures” tab on the main page 3. Click “Add New Pasture” 4. Enter a description for your pasture 5. Save the pasture (Button to the Right)

So how do you move animals into a pasture group? Did you know you can use pasture grouping to keep track of vaccination records? Here’s how: Pasture Groups – Moving animals into a group 1. Go to Herd Management -> Pasture Groups 2. Enter date worked. (If entering all the pasture information at once if moved to multiple pastures throughout the summer, make sure you enter the first pasture with the initial date first.) 3. Select Pasture to be moved into. 4. Select animals 5. Got to the top and hit move. 6. Refresh the page to see your new pasture group 7. You will also be able to see the vaccination history on the health tab of the animals. For further questions about pasture grouping, breeding data, or vaccination history, feel free to call the office at 303-465-2333, or email Kari (kario@gelbvieh.org) or Kelli (kellir@gelbvieh.org). D

8. An entire breeding report can be printed off by navigating to the ‘Reports Tab’ and selecting the ‘Un-resolved Breeding Records’ Report

GW data bulletin

Completing your 2016 Herd Assessment by Kelli Retallick

J

anuary 1 began a new herd assessment year for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA). Each female that reaches 13 months of age or older as of the first of the current year will be eligible for assessment. In order to register 2016 calves, females must have an available herd assessment (HAS) credit for 2016. The AGA staff would like to make this process a simple and easy for members as possible follow these steps to easily assess your herd for 2016. 1. Log into the AGA Registry Service. 2. Navigate to the Inventory tab from the Work Menu.

3. All the information you need to complete your Herd Assessment can be from on this page. 4. Disposing of culled females. 5. Entering 2015 breeding data.

6. Assessing optional females that were not 13 months or older by January 1, 2016. 7. 2016 Herd assessment checklist:

• Active membership required: You must be an active member of the AGA to assess your herd and register calves. Go online, now, to check and see if your membership is up-to-date. If you have associated herds linked to one account make sure those accounts are up-to-date as well. Navigate to your ‘General Profile Information’ page and check and renew associated herds from the ‘Associated’ tab. • HAS rate is $25.00 for females over 13 months of age. This one-rate fee allows members to register and transfer cows and calves as well as report any other additional information (weaning, yearling, etc.) • One HAS credit = One calf registration. Registrations for natural born multiple birth calves (i.e. twins) can be done at no additional charge. In order to register additional embryo transfer (ET) calves, an additional $25 fee for each ET calf will be applied. If you have sold embryos to other members be sure to transfer those embryos to their Embryo Inventory to avoid registration problems and/or a customer using your

26 | MARCH 2016

donor cow’s HAS credit for her natural calf. • Due date for 2016 Herd Assessment is March 15, 2016. Any HAS received after this time will be charge a late penalty: 1-30 days = 5% late penalty 31-60 days = 10% late penalty 60+ days

= 15% late penalty

• No processing fees when submitting information electronically. Any work submitted on paper will be charged an additional $2 processing fee per animal. If any member does not currently have online capabilities, contact the AGA office to set up this service. • Non-Gelbvieh or Balancer® animals can be assessed. Please call into the office with the animal’s registration number to get the female enrolled into the AGA Registry. • Inactive cows can be re-activated. If a cow has been previously dropped off a member’s inventory, this animal can be re-activated. In order to do so, the member will be charged $25 for every year the cow remained inactive. For example a cow dropped 2014 will need to be assessed for 2014, 2015, and 2016 in order to register a 2016 calf. Late penalty fees apply to females needing to be assessed in previous years because they are being assessed after the March deadline of the respected year. Contact the AGA office to re-activate cows. • Automatic Billing. Member accounts will be automatically billed for the correct amount. Balances can be paid via the online registry or by sending in a check to the AGA office. Any member accounts carrying any balance for 15 days or greater will automatically lock. No online work is permitted until full payment is received. With this checklist in hand, the AGA staff hopes to make this year’s herd assessment process as painless as possible. As always if you continue to have questions, please contact the AGA office 303-465-2333 or via e-mail at info@gelbvieh.org. D

The sale featured a remarkable lineup of females, the winners of both the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh and Balancer Bull Futurities as well as many high quality buyer pick lots. Buyer picks proved to be the hottest sellers as top two selling lots came from that category. The top seller in the sale was lot 3, the buyer pick lot from Butler Creek Farms, Milton, Tennessee. Blackhawk Cattle Company, Oregon, Illinois, purchased the exciting opportunity to pick from Butler Creek’s entire fall 2015 bull and heifer calves for a final bid of $16,000. The group of calves consists of approximately 20 head and includes ET progeny from the 2014 AGJA Junior Classic champion (BCFG QVS Kali 282Z), as well as a full sib to BCFG Butlers Ms Deb 10X, and an ET heifer out of JBOB 5498P and related cow families to these females. Also included are two full brothers to BCFG Butlers Red Oak 908W. Coming in next was the buyer pick from Cedar Top Ranch in Stapleton, Nebraska.

28 | MARCH 2016

The ranch is offering pick of their spring 2014 bred heifers and fall 2013 ET heifers that will be calving in spring 2016. The group represents numerous great cow families including 198L, the dam of the $30,000 Wide Track, the $25,000 Double Shot and the ever-popular Sandman; as well as influential sires totaling 30 ET heifers and another 365 bred heifers to choose. C-Cross Cattle Company, Asheboro, North Carolina won the honors to select from the Cedar Top Ranch herd with a final bid of $15,000. The top selling young herd sire was also the winner of the 2016 Breeder’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity. TTTT Mighty Hot ET was consigned by 3G Ranch, Kendallville, Indiana who won the bull in the futurity drawing. This fall 2014 born homozygous black, 50 percent Balancer has an outstanding EPD profile. He ranks in the top 1 percent of the breed for calving ease direct, feeder profit index and marbling; the top 5 percent for birth weight, calving ease maternal and yield grade; and the top 4 percent for heifer pregnancy. This son of Mytty In Focus and TTTT Hott Damn 105R is a deep-bodied herd sire prospect with plenty of style. Stucky Beef Genetics, Salina, Kansas purchased the bull for $13,500. The top selling female was lot 4, LWHF Lady Balance 752B consigned by Little Windy Hill Farms, Max Meadows, Virginia. This homozygous black, homozygous polled, 50 percent Balancer female offers the versatility to become a top-tier show heifer, top donor prospect or front pasture cow. The sale of Lady Balance was also accompanied by 10 units of LWHF Intimidator 617Z, her sire, at no extra charge including semen shipping. D

Ring of Gold Champions for the 2015-2016 Show Season

T

hroughout the 2015-2016 show year, Gelbvieh and Balancer females and bulls compete at show across the country to earn points for the Ring of Gold program. A total of four shows were included in the Ring of Gold tally. Each year the qualifying animals are ranked at the conclusion of the National Gelbvieh and Balancer show at the National Western Stock Show. The American Gelbvieh Association established the Ring of Gold program to encourage breeders to participate in livestock shows and to honor the top animals shown at the conclusion of the show year. Points are earned for grand and reserve champions, a well as division champions and reserves, and are based on the actual number of animals shown at each show. To honor the those animals who have risen to the top during the show season, The Ring of Gold awards are presented to the top Gelbvieh female, Gelbvieh bull, Balancer female and Balancer bull based on points awarded throughout the year. Animals must earn points in at least two shows to qualify for Ring of Gold points each year. This year’s Ring of Gold qualified shows are: Missouri State Fair, American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition, and National Western Stock Show. Members are able to submit results from qualifying shows throughout the year. Shows must have a minimum of 20 Gelbvieh and/or Balancer cattle entered into the show. Results must be submitted within 30 days of the show to the AGA office. Points are awarded to grand and reserve grand champions as well as division champions and reserves. Go to www.gelbvieh.org for more information or call the office at 303.465.2333. The following is a list of the top three animals in each Ring of Gold division who qualify for the recognition by winning points in at least two shows.

nwss news GW TTTT Mighty Hot ET Wins Balancer® Bull Futurity By Rebecca Mettler

T Ranch of Stillwater, Oklahoma took home the honors of owning and exhibiting the champion of the 2016 People’s Choice Balancer® Bull Futurity. The 6th annual event took place on January 9, 2016 in the Stadium Arena in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show. The People’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity is organized by Mettler Sale Management and is tasked with identifying young balancer sires of great potential. The champion bull, selected by the 63 members of the futurity, was TTTT Mighty Hot ET. He is the October 2014 born, 50 percent Balancer, homozygous black son of the Angus sire Mytty In Focus and out of AHL Hottdamn 105R ET. Hottdamn, the impressive donor cow, has a history of producing notable progeny; she is the dam of the 2015 National Champion Balancer Bull and numerous champions over the last four years. TTTT Mighty Hot ET is a deep bodied and soggy made sire prospect with plenty of style. He is smooth made and clean fronted with tremendous depth and body with a level top that goes into a stout hip. Along with his impressive look, this sire boasts an exciting EPD profile. He is the top 1 percent calving ease direct, feeder profit index and marbling; the top 5 percent in birth weight, calving ease maternal and yield grade; and the top 4 percent in heifer pregnancy.

Each year, one membership is randomly drawn and receives full possession and half semen interest in the champion bull. 3G Ranch in Kendallville, Indiana was drawn as the winner. 3G Ranch opted to sell full possession and ¼ semen interest at the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale. Mighty Hot was purchased by Stucky Gelbvieh of Salina, Kansas. The two runner-ups were TAU Royal 2C ET exhibited by Taubenheim Gelbvieh, of Amherst, Nebraska and AHL First Class 493B ET, exhibited by LeDoux Ranch, Agenda, Kansas. TAU Royal 2C ET is a homozygous black, homozygous polled, 50 percent Balancer son of Connealy Consensus 7229 and TAU Miss Freedom 306N and is a January 14, 2015 yearling. AHL First Class 493B ET is the homozygous polled, June 2014 born, 25 percent Balancer son Dameron First Class and BCFG Butlers Ms Deb 10X. Anyone interested in becoming a futurity member should contact Jerry Mettler to get their name put on the waiting list. Memberships only become available when a current member does not renew their annual membership. D

GW news will encompass beneficial programs for the AGA as well as the AGJA. Her responsibilities include accuracy of the online registry, administering the Smart Select Service, development of new programs and coordinating junior activities to name only a few. Retallick earned her bachelor’s degree in animal science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She then went on to Kansas State University to complete her master’s degree in animal breeding and genetics. This background makes her a perfect fit to continue to develop programs for AGA members and customers as it pertains to database service and breed improvement as well as the AGA’s new Smart Select Service. Growing up, Retallick was involved in her family’s registered cattle operation and when time allows she continues to be involved as much as possible. Retallick also served on the National Junior Angus Association Board of Directors and brings a unique perspective to the AGJA through that experience of serving on a junior board.

Retallick Accepts Director of Member Programs Position at American Gelbvieh Association by Megan Slater

K

elli Retallick has served as the data services coordinator for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) for more than a year and has recently accepted the position of director of member programs. In her time at the AGA, Retallick has proved to be capable of outstanding leadership among staff, dedication to the AGA and skill in developing association programs. Recently the AGA has changed the structure of the staff to better accommodate member programs for both the AGA and the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA). Retallick’s role as director of member programs

48 | MARCH 2016

“I am really excited about taking on this new adventure,” says Retallick. “I strongly believe that junior livestock associations can foster some of the best leaders in the industry. I hope I am able to foster that type of environment to build the next generation of leaders in the business.” The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) recognized the skill set Retallick possesses. During the 2015 BIF Research Symposium and Convention in Biloxi, Mississippi, Retallick was asked to lend her expertise as a speaker on the topic of measuring feed efficiency. BIF also recognized the new Smart Select Service that the AGA now offers commercial cattlemen and women; Retallick was instrumental in the development of that program. “The AGA sources the most skilled talent in the industry to serve on the staff. Kelli is an example of those talented individuals the AGA seeks out and finds to work as a team for the improvement of the AGA,” says Myron G. Edelman, executive director of the AGA. “Kelli will be an excellent resource for AGA’s members and their commercial industry customers as well as the junior members.” Retallick assumed her new role on January12, 2016. She can be reached at the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or via email at kellir@gelbvieh.org. D

E

ach year the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) holds a raffle to raise critical funds for the association. This year, like years in the past, Rippe Gelbvieh of Hubbell, Nebraska donated a heifer for the AGJA raffle. The funds raised by the AGJA heifer raffle are used to help cover costs at the AGJA Junior Classic, promote Gelbvieh and AGJA at events like the National FFA Convention, provide leadership opportunities to AGJA members like the POWER Conference and provide everyday services to it’s members. The raffle is the largest and most important fundraiser during the year.

With the generous help of AGA members, Gelbvieh and Balancer stakeholders as well as many other AGJA supporters, the AGJA was able to raise $17,300. The raffle takes place during the AGA National Sale and Futurity event in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. Michael Rae, Berthoud, Colorado won the heifer in the donation raffle but then generously donated her back to the AGJA to be auctioned off. TKW Gelbvieh, Tim Wild of Waterloo, Illinois purchased the heifer. For the second year in a row, AGJA member Braxton Murray of Kingfisher, Oklahoma sold the most raffle tickets; Grace Steenbergen, Cheyenne, Wyoming came in second. Thank you for everyone who supported the AGJA in this fundraising event. A special thank you goes out to Rippe Gelbvieh for the heifer donation, Michael Rae for donating the heifer to auction and to Tom Wild for the purchase of the heifer. D

GW over the fence

with Tom Boehm, manager of House Heritage Farms By William McIntosh

H

ouse Heritage Farms is located in the heart of the Bluegrass Region in central Kentucky. In 2009, farm owners Lennie and Vicky House hired Tom Boehm to manage their farming operation. In the past seven years House Heritage Farms has seen a lot of changes.

Where did you start making improvements when you came on board? “When I started here they hadn’t kept any records at all. They basically had a group of cows and a group of bulls they knew nothing about. The bulls stayed with the cows year round,” Boehm said. The first step for Tom was to get the cows in a 60day calving season. “We preg-checked the first fall I was here. We culled nearly half of the cowherd that fall for either being open or on disposition,” Boehm said. Plus, he decided not to keep any heifers out of that calf crop because of the lack of information. House Heritage Farms also sold all their bulls that year. “We had to sell the bulls, we didn’t know anything about them at all. We didn’t have any pedigree information or EPDs to know what to expect in their offspring. It was a lot of change in a very short amount of time. Lennie wasn’t happy with how the farm and the cows had been managed in the past and was willing

56 | MARCH 2016

to make the changes that needed to be made.”

Building back the herd required a lot of thought. What decisions were made and why? In building back the cowherd they purchased a set of black and black/white face bred heifers bred to calving ease Hereford bulls. They replaced the bull inventory with Balancer and Angus bulls. “We bought back a good set of bred heifers from a local heifer developer with a good reputation. We also bought a good set of bulls. We selected bulls that would add pounds and muscle. That’s what we like about the Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle.”

How does crossbreeding with Gelbvieh fit into the operation? Tom started a strict crossbreeding system. They try to maintain roughly 50 percent Gelbvieh and 50 percent Angus in their calves. “Crossbreeding is a no-brainer. We get the benefits of heterosis and are able to get the benefits of each breed. I really like the maternal traits and added performance of Gelbvieh, along with a good disposition.”

Records and more records— What does it matter? Boehm has been keeping good records to continue to improve the cowherd. He is able to make well-informed selections based on solid data. He is able to track calves’ pedigrees, in most cases, three generations. With the selection decisions Tom has made he has shortened the calving season from year-round to 60 days and increased weaning weights by 150 to 175 pounds. “It hasn’t been easy. We had to make some big changes early on and invest in genetics but it all is paying off.” Tom said.

What have been the fruits of your labor? In the past seven years House Heritage Farms has built a reputation of quality. “Last year our steer calves were one of the highest selling groups in both of their weight divisions. The heifers topped the sale as well, and that was after keeping the top 40 percent as replacements,” Boehm said. Due to the sudden death of the owner Lennie House the farm was force to reduce the cowherd. “We sold the cows the last part of June they topped the market at $3,100 per head.”

What does the future hold for House Heritage Farms?

in the Smart Select Service to better manage his data. Smart Select Service is an online commercial cow calf data management system that allows producers to make the most informed selection decisions. “The more information you have the better decisions you can make. How could we refuse?” House Heritage Farms has had to make some tough decisions and huge changes to reach their goals. Through a strict crossbreeding system and making data-based genetic selections they have been able to increase weaning weight by 150 to 175 pounds is just seven years. D

Once again, House Heritage Farms find themselves in a state of change as they build back the cowherd. “We will continue to build with the same goals in mind. We will focus on producing cattle that will be born easy, heavy muscled and grow fast. We sell our calves by the pound and heavier calves make us money. We have kept a lot of heifers so we will get back up the numbers we want to be at.” Going forward, Boehm has enrolled the cowherd

GW out in the field

What are You Sowing? By William McIntosh

I

’m sure you all have heard the old saying “You reap what you sow.” The statement is true in so many different situations. There was once a little boy whose favorite place was an old fruit tree on the back of the family farm. He loved to play there and enjoyed climbing the tree. The old fruit tree hadn’t produced fruit in several years so the boy’s father told his wife he was going to cut the old tree down. The boy was desperate to save his favorite tree. He saw his neighbor’s orchard full of red ripe apples. So the boy snuck over and picked the neighbors apples and tied them to his old fruit tree. The next day his dad ran the house excitedly telling his wife that the old tree was full of apples. His wife said that’s great but why are you so upset. He said this is the first time I have seen a peach tree bear apples. The cattle business is the same way. It is nearly impossible to produce the highest quality calves if you start out with poor genetics. The bull purchase decisions you make today will affect your breeding program for years to come. Just as in the analogy, apple trees bear apples and mediocre bulls will more than likely sire mediocre calves. With the current volatility in the cattle market, it is very important that we all improve our product if we want to be in business. We have seen consolidation in all segments of agriculture, from row crops to pork and poultry. We can expect to see the same type of activity in the beef industry in years to come. Just as the row crop farmers, beef cattle producers have to become more efficient in production. Just to be clear, efficiency doesn’t mean cattle consume less it means producing more with less input. To be more efficient and more profitable you have to study the data available to make informed selection decisions. The quickest way to change a herd is through sire selection. When making you bull purchases keep in mind that you herd sires genetics will represent 50 percent of the genetics of your calf crop. Cow-calf producers can make great improvements though improved sire selection.

58 | MARCH 2016

We have more data to digest today than ever thought possible. The first step is to determine what traits your herd needs to improve on. This answer will vary greatly depending on your current situation, location, management program, when you market you calves and so on. It is important to match genetics with your individual needs. In some environments and management systems it may not be productive to select of extreme performance, for example, where in other cases added performance would be beneficial. To truly do a good job of sire selection you must first know your cowherd. All too often the importance of the productivity of the cow is overlooked. Do you know the productivity and profitability of your cows individually? I think if we are honest most commercial cattle would have to answer no. There’s so much data to study when selecting the next herd sire but, in many cases, very little to no data on the cowherd. Today many row crop farmers talk about farming by the foot. They track inputs and yield fanatically. They incorporate the latest technology like satellites and farm equipment has more technology than the first space shuttle. Why do they go to the extra effort? Simple, they have to improve production and decrease input cost every year if they want to stay in business. They need the important data to make important decisions. The American Gelbvieh Association’s Smart Select Service program allows commercial producers the ability to collect and report data of their cowherd just as AGA members do. This allows them to identify their most and least productive cows within their herd. This information allows them to make well informed, smart decision based on science. Through Smart Select Service, producers are able to identify the strengths and weakness of the cowherd and then select the proper bulls to move their programs forward. The best decisions are based on the best data. D

time as an AGJA member can’t last forever. AGJA has been preparing us to become an AGA member. That is one of the greatest opportunities the AGJA can provide. For some members that’s not too far away and for others it’s a few years down the road, but it’s still an exciting door to think about opening. Getting elected to the board is an incredible experience and one of those opportunities the AGJA throws your way. All of these doors within the Gelbvieh breed aren’t the only ones the AGJA helps you open. This month my fellow board members and I have the privilege to travel to Kansas City, Missouri for the Youth Beef Industry Conference (YBIC). We will spend the weekend with board members from other breeds and expand our knowledge about the beef industry. This past January, I was lucky enough to travel to the warm and sunny San Diego, California, to attend the Cattle Industry Convention-NCBA Trade Show and Cattlemen’s College. My passion for the cattle industry is fueled by Gelbvieh and the AGJA helped me spend a warm week in sunny California.

So the next time that you put on that blue polo or go check your favorite heifer, take a minute to stop and think about that path the AGJA is helping you pave. Some side effects of excitement and anticipation may occur. D

Through the years I have had many other opportunities present themselves and being a member of the AGJA played a huge role in that. Sadly, our

2016 Cow-Calf Production Shows Less Profitability By Roger Wilson, UNL Budget Analyst, Farm Management

I

n 2015 the University of Nebraska Agricultural Economics Department formulated four cow-calf budgets. The Sandhills cow/calf producer budget is for a herd of 500 cows and the data is from a panel of producers in Cherry County. The remaining three budgets are the 50-cow herd located in the panhandle of the state, and 300- and 750-head cow herd systems generally located in and around Custer County. These last three budgets were compiled from producer survey data collected for this purpose. Budgets are available online at the UNL Farm and Ranch Management website (http://farm.unl.edu/beef). Cattle and feed prices have recently been updated for 2016. These updated budgets show that profits have declined in every budget group compared to the 2015 budgets. These declines in profitability are partly the result of a reduction in gross incomes. Revenues from 2016 cattle sales range from 65% to 74% of those in 2015 (http://go.unl.edu/x5c9). The large disparity of revenue decline among the various budgets is partly due to time lag in the preparations of the 2015 budgets, which occurred during a time when prices declined. The 2015 Sandhills Cow/Calf Producer Budget was completed nearly 50 days before the other three budgets. In addition to the decline in cattle prices from the 2015 to 2016 period, feed costs increased for three of the four budgets (http://go.unl.edu/g9w0), with the Sandhills budget showing the greatest increase of $251 per calf. This is due to the large increase in the cost of leased grazing in the North Agricultural Statistics District, which includes Cherry County, and the fact that a large part of the feed in this budget comes from grazing. Grazing rate increases were calculated

64 | MARCH 2016

using data from the 2014-2015 Nebraska Real Estate Summary (http://agecon.unl.edu/2015farmrealestate). The 750-head Cow Herd System budget is the only one that shows a lower feed cost ($13 per calf) in 2016 compared to 2015. This lower cost is a result of lower hay prices, which makes up most of the winter ration. The Sandhills budget showed the largest decrease in profitability, $916 per calf (http://go.unl.edu/k2k3). Profitability on this budget declined from a positive $492 per calf in 2015 to a negative $424 loss in 2016. Lower cattle prices and higher feed costs explain all but $19 of this decline. While the 750-cow budget, representative of the Central Agricultural Statistics District, is the only one of the published budgets showing a positive profit for 2016, $218 per calf, it has the second largest decline in profitability. The budget projects profit will decline by $563 per calf from the 2015 level of $780. The 300- and 50-head cow budgets, representative of the Central Agricultural Statistics District and Northwest Agricultural Statistics District (Panhandle) respectively, have similar declines in profitability from the 2015 to 2016 period. The 300-cow budget declined $524 per calf while the 50-cow budget declined $534 over this period. The 2016 profits were budgeted at a negative $240 per calf for the 300-cow operation and a negative $289 per calf for the 50-cow operation. While comparing these budgets over time provides insight into industry trends, it is important to remember there are substantial differences among firms throughout the state in the prices they pay for resources and the prices received when they sell their calves resulting in wide differences in profitability. This is why it is important to modify any budget to reflect the ranch for which the budget is used. For example, budgets for ranches that primarily rely on grazing land owned by the firm may still show substantial profits given the present price structure. However, including a reasonable cost for those resources may show that much of that profitability is a return on land investment rather than operation profitability. The impact that lower profitability of cow-calf production will have on future grazing lease rates and sale prices for grazing land will be interesting to watch. D

Producers focus on herd sire selection As bull buying season approaches, a K-State cow-calf specialist provides strategies to choose an appropriate herd sire. By Katie Allen and Connor Orrock, K-State Research and Extension

S

pring breeding season has arrived, and many cattle producers are likely thinking about selecting their next herd sire. This one decision could affect their profitability drastically. Bob Weaber, associate professor of beef breeding and genetics at Kansas State University, said it is important for cattle producers to think about their operation’s breeding objective and goals. Producers need to evaluate their current herd performance attributes, and consider where they are performing adequately as well as areas of needed improvement.

Preparation before purchase Like most things, preparation is crucial to bull buying. Weaber, a K-State Research and Extension cow-calf specialist, recommends that producers think about their marketing endpoint and put selection pressure on those areas. If marketing or maintaining replacement heifers, for example, bulls with strong maternal predictors would be desired. In this case, producers should focus on expected progeny differences (EPDs) such as calving ease, milk and cow energy value. If marketing calves at weaning, growth EPDs should be the focus. If marketing calves on a grid, bulls with desired carcass predictors are the best choice. In addition to the endpoint focus, Weaber encourages producers to write down their immediate and long-term goals. Focusing on herd rebuilding, resource limitations and retaining replacement heifers might need to be thought out. Choosing between cross and straight breeding should also be part of the selection process. “I encourage producers, if they are thinking of or

66 | MARCH 2016

are in a crossbreeding system, to develop a planned system,” Weaber said. “Don’t make a decision on short notice – you’ll pay for that for a number of years.” “The decisions we make buying bulls will have a lasting impact on our cow herd until at least 2025,” he continued. “The first-born daughters of bulls will grow a couple of years and be in production likely six, seven or eight calving cycles.” If planning to attend a bull sale, make sure to get a sale catalog as soon possible, Weaber said. Use percentile tables and breed averages while going through the sale catalog, and find animals that excel in the traits identified through the breeding objective. He recommends that producers make a list of suitable bulls that is about three times longer than how many bulls needed. This is helpful in case bulls of interest sell for a price that is out of budget.

Live inspection important With list in hand, producers can use days leading up to sale day to inspect and sort through the bulls in person. “If you can go a week or week and a half early, you’ll have more leisure time going through the bulls, talking with the seedstock vendors about their program and maybe go look at cows if you’re thinking of buying a bull to make replacement heifers,” Weaber said. “Try to get a feel for how that cow herd is managed. I encourage you to find one that mimics your own nutrition and management strategy.” Bull buying is a significant investment for producers, and Weaber said no one knows the bulls better than the seller. He suggests that producers take the opportunity to get recommendations from that person. Local extension agents could also provide assistance in matching a producer’s goals to bulls available for purchase. When examining bulls on the list previously ranked on performance data, focus heavily on structure, he said. Foot and leg structure of bulls is crucial to their longevity in the herd. Also, updated data will likely be available on sale day. It is important to make sure all bulls on the list still meet your requirements.

“Once you’ve gone through the phenotypic evaluation and knocked off bulls that don’t fit for either body condition or feet and leg structure, find the sale order,” Weaber said. “Often, the sale order is indicative of which bulls the seedstock vendor thinks are the most valuable. Take your list of bulls and the sale order, and make a new list. Put them in priority order based on your evaluation reflective of the order you would purchase them in one column. Next to that, reorder the list in sale order.”

consider others on the list. More information about beef breeding and genetics and bull buying strategies can be found on the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry website. D

If a bull is at the top of the list for priority and sale order, the producer should consider bidding aggressively on him, he said. On the other hand, if a lower priority bull sells early, the producer should consider buying him only if he is at the right price. If that bull sells out of budget, the producer can let him pass and

Feed Bunk Management By Warren Rusche SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist

W

hen it comes to nutritional management of growing and finishing cattle, the scientific aspects tend to get the most attention. Hours are spent getting the formulations right and debating the merits of different ingredients and additives.

Score

Description

0

No feed remaining in bunk.

0.5

Scattered feed remaining. Most of the bottom of the bunk exposed.

1

Thin, uniform layer of feed remaining. About 1 corn kernel deep.

2

25 to 50% of feed remaining

3 In truth, feeding cattle successfully is as 4 much art and judgment as science. Judgment is required to balance between over- and under-feeding. Under-feeding limits performance and possibly quality grade. Feeding too much increases feed waste and more importantly can trigger acidosis, poor performance, and increased death loss.

Tracking Feed Bunk Scores An SDSU research study conducted by Bierman and Pritchard (1996) compared cattle fed all they would eat to those fed just enough so that all the feed was consumed in a 24-hr period. They observed that the steers fed with the slick bunk strategy had similar ADG but improved feed efficiency compared to the steers fed to appetite. There was also more variation in ADG among the steers fed all they would eat, suggesting that some of the steers may have experienced subclinical acidosis from overconsumption. The goal should be to achieve dry matter intakes as close as possible to the cattle’s appetite, while avoiding roller coaster intake patterns. Dr. Robbi Pritchard at SDSU developed a widely-adopted scoring system to help cattle feeders minimize variation in feed intake and optimize performance (Table 1). Tracking bunk scores and amount of feed delivered will help identify pens that are right on track, those that should be offered more feed, and those that should be fed less. Over a period of 7 to 10 days, seeing bunk score of 0.5 two or three days with scores of zero for the balance of the period would indicate a good balance between high intake to support performance while minimizing inconsistencies in intake.

70 | MARCH 2016

More than 50% of feed remaining. Crown is thoroughly disturbed. Feed is virtually untouched. Crown of feed still noticeable.

Table 1. SDSU Feedbunk Scoring System

Feeding Guidlines Some guidelines for managing feed deliveries include: Feed calls should be made at the same time every day. Feed should be delivered at the same time every day, ideally within a 15-minute window. Do not increase feed offered by more than 5%. Feed should not be increased more frequently than every third day. Remove stale feed. Cattle behavior and aggressiveness in coming to the feed bunk can tell a great deal about whether or not feed deliveries should be increased. The Iowa Beef Center at Iowa State University has recently released a free, updated fact sheet, Feed Bunk Management, that covers this subject in much greater detail, including pictures showing examples of different bunk scores. INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY

She Sells March 16!

An incredible opportunity to own one of the elite females in the breed. One of the only Balancer females ever to surpass $300,000 in direct progeny sales, Evelynn is just beginning to leave her mark on the industry. Her bulls in our 2015 spring sale averaged over $10,000 on 19 head. As a half-blood Balancer with an outcross pedigree, she offers many attractive mating options to today’s popular Balancer, Gelbvieh and Angus sires.
