If you want to experience sightlessness for a few hours, schedule a visit to Blinde Kuh . The dining-room is pitch-dark, so you really can’t see anything. You order your food beforehand; then a sightless person will guide you to your table and serve you your meal. It’s not cheap (approx. CHF 40/ person) but it’s a truly striking experience. For over 40 years, business men and students have enjoyed their sausages side by side at Vorderer Sternen. It’s famous for the best Bratwurst (typical Swiss sausage) in town. We like our zoo, especially the 11‘000 sqm Masoala Rainforest. Each Saturday at 11am, there are free guided tours across those parts of the rainforest that are not usually accessible to the public. Definitively schedule enough time to explore the zoo. The best time for a visit is on weekdays or early in the morning – at other times, hordes of children run wild. It’s worth bringing your own picnic or packed lunch since food is expensive. The Zoo Zurich is also a good option when the weather is bad because many of the animals live indoors. You can enjoy Zurich’s nightlife the whole week long. However, trains and trams usually only run until 1 am. After that, you’ll have to fork out for a taxi. On Friday and Saturday nights, there are special night services (only trains and buses, no trams though). After 1 am, you must spend CHF 5 on a night supplement (in addition to your regular ticket). Right below the Polyterasse , the café of the ETH (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ) is located. It’s a popular place because prices are really fair. In the evenings, it resembles a bar; cocktails go for CHF 9 (which is a rare thing in Zurich). There are cultural events twice a week. Note: Mon-Thu only open till 10pm, Friday only till 9pm (owing to neighbours and their wish for nighttime peace). Closed during the Weekend. ETH/Universitätsspital 6, 9, 10 Polybahn from Central

The Xenix has existed for almost thirty years. After several moves, the cinema has finally found a place in an old kindergartenshed. With its bar, which spreads out on a gravel area during summer, and a lot of room for boule and ping-pong, the Xenix is a place of delight for Zurich’s youth.

Would you like a piece of cake after a long night out? Happy Beck offers fresh pastries the whole night long. A few years ago, this meadow was a romping place for alcoholics and dealers. The city’s government counteracted this development with the renovation of the park restaurant. In the meantime, the park is free of syringes and glass fragments but full of small children and sun worshipers. If you can’t make it to the lakefront, you can relax at Bäckeranlage. The restaurant offers good food and a delightful view on the park.

At its heart, the Cocuna is not only a bar but one of the hippest clubs on Langstrasse . The entrance fee is usually CHF 10 (a glass of prosecco or beer is included), the age of the clubbers varies, depending on the party. Downstairs, there is space to drink; upstairs electro parties.

This gallery has adopted the name of the boutique that once stood in its place. A few artists from Zurich have joined forces and exhibit their creative works independently. The changing exhibitions and installations are always an adventure.

This flea market, which takes place each Saturday on the school ground is among the largest of its kind in Switzerland. You can find everything there. Collectors go to the flea market every week, while occasional sellers bring old clothes and other bits and pieces. Early birds may find a real treasure, while later comers will appreciate the falling prices. Anyhow, it’s worth a visit (which may easily be longer than you intended). Sat 7am-6pm.

The Zukunft has become rapidly famous: the club (whose name translates to future ) is well-known for its electro-parties. During summertime, life takes place outdoors: dinners are replaced by BBQs, cycling is favoured over commuting by train, open-air cinemas replace television and people enjoy festivals rather than clubbing. After work, you can just stroll through the city and bask in the sun. The lake and river lie at the heart of these summertime activities: playing football, philosophising, bathing and simply hanging out.

The Wollishofenwiese (the meadow of Wollishofen) is one of the hippest public parks at the lakeside. Paddling and sunbathing during the day, BBQ and drinks in the evening. There’re two fix BBQ stands for you to grill your food. However, they’re always rather dirty. So if you mind the grime, use aluminium foil. There is always room for suntanned football players and Frisbee fans on the grass. In summer-time, there’s always something going on near the lake (which is surrounded by many public parks). The best thing to do is to cycle from Wollishofen to Küsnacht in order to check out which places suit you best. From Wollishofen all around the lake till Tiefenbrunnen

rote fabrik Seestrasse 395

In the 1980s, when only so-called high culture such as the opera was financially supported by the government, Zurich’s youth demonstrated during several years against the one-sided cultural politics.

They protested in diverse ways such as street fighting and hiking naked along the Bahnhofstrasse. The protests helped to create a more pluralist atmosphere and finally resulted in the opening of the Rote Fabrik . In this former phone factory, the heart of Zurich’s alternative cultural scene has been beating for almost thirty years now. Concerts, theatre, open-air cinema and poetry: there is always something going on. Check out the programme at www.rotefabrik.ch.
