Letter from our treasurer As treasurer and member of the finance committee, I see first-hand every week, the vital importance of our financial stewardship as Saint Andreans. I also get to witness the remarkable faithfulness of our parishioners, across a full range of incomes and situations, as they first make and then honor their annual commitments. Do we all, nevertheless, realize how important our stewardship support is to sustaining this incredible house of ministry and mission? My confident answer is that we surely do, hence our past and continuing generous support. While we are also blessed with income from a solid endowment fund contributing 36%, with loose plate offerings, and rental income supplying 8%, this church gets a full 56% of its annual budget from our annual stewardship drive. As the recent Stewardship Committee letter stated, we are preliminarily planning on a 4% increase in expenditures for 2013. That, however,

depends on a very successful stewardship campaign. When considering those faithful pledging members no longer with us, the needed increase rises to 5%. Thus, I urge everyone who responsibly can, and who want to help pull us through again, to consider making a 6% stretch pledge, or even more if possible. Not only will you be helping to cover lost pledge income, but you will also be helping us offset the impact on goal of certain parishioners who simply cannot increase now.
St. Andrew's and the Church of the Advent gather at Advent on the second Tuesday each month at 5:30 p.m. to distribute produce. We meet again on the fourth Saturday at 8:30 a.m. to distribute boxes of non-perishable foods that were boxed the Thursday before at 6 p.m. Join us!
And, if you are new to the church or have not pledged before, please consider doing so this year. It is so helpful to us knowing of your intended financial support. And trust me as a long time pledger, your making a formalized commitment of this nature will redound to you in ways that you could not have imagined. If you need a red 2013 pledge card, you will find them in the Narthex as you enter the front door or you may request one from our bookkeeper, Ruth Kempf, at 452-9581 ext.211. We sincerely appreciate you returning your pledge card as soon as possible. Remember, it is not a legal obligation but rather a simple statement of intention to financially insure Saint Andrew's ability to continue to grow in service to our community, to our important missions, and to those individuals in need of our love and support. 1st deadline and if we are accepted, the next step will be an energy audit to help us decide what improvements and actions are needed. There will also be education, communication, and worship components to be planned and implemented in the near future. This is not just a Green Team initiative, but includes parish-wide involvement. We are one of 30 Episcopal Churches to receive a partial tuition support grant from the national church. All the money needed for application was raised at the last art show. These include "tips for greening," how to undertake environmental justice advocacy, prayers and worship materials, and educational materials. Some topics covered are energy conservation, waste reduction, recycling, toxic reduction, grounds maintenance, sustainable food, and "greening" the building. Check out their website at greenfaith.org. We have already seen some action in these areas. The amount of waste in our building has greatly been reduced by recycling. We no longer need the huge garbage bins in the kitchens and Collins Hall and more recycle bins have been added. The large orange recycle cans that can be put out in the alley are now available in our area and one has been ordered. This will simplify collection on Thursdays and it can be done by our sextons instead of the Green Team volunteers. The Academy is collecting aluminum cans for fundraising. There is a large round black recycle can in the downstairs kitchen and a tall blue rectangular bin in Collins Hall for cans only. We are now using dishes and no longer buying disposables. Some plastic washable cups for the children were recently purchased as were enough glasses for big events. The sextons will be taking out dishes to the narthex before church and doing dishes on Sunday afternoon as part of their work duties, relieving Eleanor from extra work. Let's all thank her for all the work she does every Sunday for coffee hour. We will continue to need more clean up volunteers for big events and this is a way for the whole church to be involved. It seemed to work well after

the last picnic. The next big event is the art show on November 16. Please volunteer to help out by calling Sarah Acland(233-5339) or Kim Torres(457-3864). The first Hazmat recycle event helped several parishioners rid themselves of toxic items they had stored. Please continue to bring in light bulbs, batteries, and packing materials and place in the plastic containers in the closet across from the downstairs kitchen or in the hall between the sanctuary and Collins Hall. We will soon announce our first electronics recycling. We are also hoping to start composting the food we throw away daily and save for use on our grounds and garden, reducing trash even more. There are religious and spiritual values and beliefs underlying the GreenFaith program. GreenFaith believes that: "1. People grow spiritually through a strong relationship with the Earth and that people of faith are called to understand the teachings on the environment in their sacred texts and theologies. 2. People of faith have a vital role to play in restoring healthy ecosystems around the world. Religious institutions can support adoption of environmentally sustainable consumption habits by 'greening' their building operations and educating and mobilizing their members to do the same. All people deserve a clean, safe environment, regardless of race or economic status. Minority and poor communities suffer disproportionately from environmental degradation and it is the role of religious institutions to advocate for a healthy environment." Because children occupy our building for a great proportion of the day, we feel it is our duty and responsibility to provide them with the safest and least toxic environment possible. We have already switched our cleaning chemicals to natural and non-toxic ones and we will be evaluating our use of chemicals on our grounds. The children are also learning to recycle. Twice a year, the Green Team will submit a progress report to GreenFaith. The first of these will include a mission statement, a communications plan, results of an energy audit and action plans regarding it, and copies of a letter sent to the Bishop and a newsletter article highlighting our acceptance into the program.

This increasing environmental endeavor at St. Andrew's has been quite time consuming but also very rewarding to me. My recycle work began in 1971 when several other students and I formed the Environmental Club at Seneca High School. This was the direct result of the first Earth Day in 1970 and I have been hooked ever since. But I have always felt closest to God through nature and that sense began in my childhood. As a young child, my sanctuaries were under trees in my neighborhoods. I marveled at the intricacies of insects and flowers. I learned to be still and observe wildlife. God still rewards me frequently with visits on my porch or patio. My recent favorites have been a baby possum and a green hummingbird I have made a pledge to simplify my life and to be less of a consumer, trying to reuse instead of purchase new. This includes clothing and furnishings in my home. I have eliminated all the grass in my yard and am trying to replace with native plants. My next project is a rain garden/bird sanctuary area in my backyard. My focus now is on less use of plastic though I can't seem to stop buying "Vitamin Water" when I'm at Walgreens. If you are familiar with the Daily Office of Morning Prayer, you could guess that Canticle 12(Rite!!) "A Song of Creation" would be my favorite. It is the canticle appointed for Saturday, but when I was young, we often sang it in church. It was lovingly known as "The Barnyard Opera." If you are my age or older, see if you can remember how it goes. If you are younger or a new Episcopalian, turn to page 88 in the Book of Common Prayer to read it, or there is the modern, more lively Hymn 412, "Praise to God," in the 1982 Episcopal Hymnal. David can we sing either one soon?

Sunday Mornings Discuss the week's lectionary readings (All Saints' Sunday) with the help of materials from Feasting on the Word. The adult formation group gathers at 10 a.m. in Collin's Hall and, with coffee in hand, listens to what God is saying to us in our time and our own lives through the appointed readings. Adults are also welcome to Parents in Conversation. Bring your coffee to Room 201 by the chapel and chat with other parents or just sit and read the paper.
Youth and children's ministries
Christmas is coming, so
The Youth Group needs us now! St. Andrew's youth are again gathering toys, trinkets, personal items and cash donations for Operation Christmas Child, and are asking all St. Andreans to help them fill 40 shoeboxes as they did last year. Operation Christmas Child, a project established by Samaritan Purse International Relief in 1993, hopes to distribute the Christmas boxes to more than100 million children in need around the world. On our youth group's wish list for donations are the following items: Small toys, small toy cars, note pads, pens, markers, card games, yo yo's, small books, bar soap, combs and anything else that you wish to donate. In addition, the youth group also needs plastic shoe boxes for packing the items for shipping. The youth members also will be glad to go out and buy items for the boxes if you'd prefer to give a cash donation. Please bring the items -- or cash -- to church this Sunday, Nov. 4, or drop off the donations at the church office by Friday, Nov. 9. The youth group will pack the boxes at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. Thanks in advance for your support on this annual youth group project.

for our children and teens By Martha Holland, Children's Minister The annual Christmas Pageant will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, with the dress rehearsal at 10 a.m. the day before. Our teens present the named roles (Mary, Joseph, Gabriel and on through Herod and Wise Men) with the younger children appearing as angels, shepherds, and sheep. In the middle are necessary but not so glam parts like Herod's Henchmen and the Innkeeper. Come to Sunday School this week to find out what your part will be. The Junior Choir will sing for the Pageant. They began practicing with Emily last week and will continue to sing before and after Sunday School (9:50-10 a.m. and 11-11:20 a.m.) with either Emily or Martha guiding them. Children in the Catechesis classes are automatically in the Jr. Choir and older students are also welcome. Emily has made a CD of the music so everyone can practice at home and in the car. They will reprise much of their pageant music at the 4 p.m. Family Service on Christmas Eve. This lovely service is a meaningful way to step outside the hustle of holiday preparations and begin the transition from the expectancy of Advent into the holiness of the Incarnation. And the reception hosted by the Women of St. Andrew's is always beautiful and delicious - well worth the price of admission (canned goods for the Food Pantry.)
Other Holiday Events On Sunday, Nov. 25, children will gather in Collins Hall after church to make Advent wreaths to take home while adults "Green the Church," setting up the trees, swags, and wreaths that help mark this special season. Martha would welcome a couple of adults or teens to help the children with their creations. Donations of wreath-making materials (forms, real or artificial greenery &/or candles) would be welcome. We have talked about having a St. Nicholas Party on Saturday, Dec. 8, but Martha needs to hear from you: Will your children attend? Is morning or afternoon better? And how would you like to help? Contact our Children's Minister, Martha Holland (mholland@mysaintandrews.org or 452-9581 x 224) for more information or to offer to help with any of these events.
Thanks are due for our great pre-Halloween party The children had a wonderful time at the Halloween Party last week. They decorated pumpkins with candy pieces, made ghosts to float in their trees or doorways, and went home with enough candy that they won't need to Trick or Treat tonight. (Betcha they will anyway!) Our thanks go to Rhonda Neutz for organizing this event from planning the crafts to cleaning up when everyone went home. We are also grateful for all the parents who brought treats, helped make crafts, and got their kid's costumes finished early so they could wear them to church. Finally, our thanks go to Anna Maas who photographed all the princesses, heroes, and villains and posted the pics on St. Andrew's facebook page.

All Saints' Sunday
A day to remember our saints and help All Saints' On All Saints' Sunday, Nov. 4, we will have an opportunity to remember and honor the saints in our parish and the diocese. As in prior years, a memorial list of names of those who have died will be read at both of our services. To add names of loved ones to the memorial list, look for a sign-up sheet in the narthex or contact Mary Jane (mjcherry@mysaintandrews.org, 452-9581 x 210). In addition, however, this year we again collect donations for All Saints' Camp and Conference Center. Your generosity will help the center continue to form us as people of God as it provides a beautiful location for summer camp and many other gatherings. Please give generously.
Author to read from book on Arab, Jewish Kentucky women Carmichaels and Interfaith Paths to Peace invite you to join us at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Carmichaels Bookstore at 2720 Frankfort Ave. for a reading and book signing with Nora Rose Moosnick, author of "Arab and Jewish Women in Kentucky." In her new book, Moosnick, a visiting scholar at the University of Kentucky, reveals how Jewish and Arab women have navigated the intersection of tradition, assimilation, and Kentucky's cultural landscape. The stories of 10 women's experiences as immigrants or the children of immigrants join around common themes of public service to their communities, inter-generational relationships, running small businesses, and the difficulties of juggling family and work.
Names are sought for potential members of task force By the Rev. Katherine Doyle, Chair of the Christian Formation Department

At the 2011 Diocesan Convention, Bishop White asked if I would accept the appointment to the position of Chair of Christian formation. He charged me with challenge to design a program on "Foundations in Faith for those seeking to make a commitment to Christ." He furthered asked me to look at whether it "might help to standardize the content of what is being offered to those new to faith and this tradition." In the ensuing months, Bishop White, Canon Smith and I met several times to fine tune and more clearly define the goals. Repeatedly it was stressed that Christian formation needs to be a lifelong process. I have met with several Dioceses who are a bit ahead in this process. Out of all these meetings, we have decided that it would be prudent to form a committee to address these goals as well as the resolutions which came out of General Convention this summer. This committee would be made up of subcommittees made up of 2 or 3 people who spans the ages. These sub-committees would be responsible for gathering information. The beginning questions to ask are "What does the Diocese of Kentucky, parishes, and people need or want from the Diocese in your particular area? Are there specific helps parishes, Christian formation people, or clergy would like? What "standards" or "content" should necessarily be included in all parishes?" I am looking for names of potential members for this committee. The divisions are as follows (ages are rough estimates): Pre-school/early elementary Older elementary Middle School High School College Young adult (20's/30's) Adults (40-60) Mature adults The time commitment would be an initial large group meeting; then each sub-committee would meet themselves. This could be done in person, via email, or Skype. How the sub-committee divides their work and devises ways to gather information will be left up to them. The sub-committee will then choose and present to the large group three different ways the diocese can respond. Together the large group will talk about what is feasible for the year and how to proceed. My goal is for our first meeting to be in January 2013. I would appreciate any names (yourself included) of people who you believe might be able to serve on this important task force. Faithfully, Katherine Doyle

'We are the World'
Local art show will spotlight mission work Opening on Friday, Nov. 16, St. Andrew's will host another Local Art in the Highlands show, this one based on the theme "We Are The World" to benefit the St. Andrew's Mission Team and the international and domestic mission work of Hand in Hand Ministries. The art work, most of which will be for sale, will be on display for about three months. The opening night party will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. in Collins Hall. As with prior art show openings, it will offer lots of delicious nibbles and refreshments, including wine and beer, as guests and artists mingle, surrounded by photographs, paintings, and other forms of creative expression exploring the theme. Admission is $10 at the door, which covers the cost of food and soft drinks. Hand in Hand Ministries, a Louisville agency dedicated to serving the poor, is organizing a medical mission trip to Nicaragua in January (see http://www.hhminstries.com/ ), and two Saint Andreans are joining the trip. In addition to the medical mission trips, Hand in Hand arranges teams to help rebuild tornado-damaged homes in Appalachia; build houses for the poor in Belize, where they also take care of children affected by AIDS; and help educate poor children in Managua, Nicaragua. They also sent containers full of medical supplies to Haiti. This is just a small fraction of their work. Saint Andreans have formed teams to work with Hand in Hand several times. We have rehabbed damaged trailers in Appalachia, built a house in Belize, and sent quite a few parishioners to Managua's medical mission. It has been a productive partnership that we aim to continue. The show's curators, Kim Torres and Sandie Griffin, co-owners of Lucent Dreams, have sent out an open call for artwork submissions. Artists may bring up to four pieces each -- wired and ready to hang, labeled with name, title and price. The art work should be delivered to St. Andrew's between 3 and 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4. If you are bringing work, organizers ask that you use St. Andrew's main entrance at the front of the church on 2233 Woodbourne Ave. Contact Kim if you have questions at 502-457-3864 or ampersandprime@gmail.com .

It's time for college goodie boxes! Parents - please send the name and college address of your college student to Claire Meena at cemeenaleist@yahoo.com no later than Friday, Nov. 30. Everybody else: please bring treats to church by Sunday, Dec. 2, when the Youth Group will pack the boxes after the 11 a.m. service. We expect to mail 15-20 boxes to students, who undoubtedly will be grateful for these reminders of home and fuel for last-minute studying. The Youth Group enjoys packing them - and anticipating their own boxes in a year or two.

Bring treats: anything sturdy enough to stand up to the U.S. mail that won't spoil or melt before it's consumed by grateful student. Deliver the treats to church or to the parish office by noon on Dec. 2. Snack packs or individually wrapped homemade goodies (cookies, crackers, candy, popcorn and chips) are all welcome, as are healthier options like dried fruit, beef jerky, granola bars and juice boxes.
Thank you for helping our college students stay connected to their church home.

Look for the sign-up sheet in the narthex on Sunday. Our Youth Group members are fired-up about doing this again, but we need members who are at least 18 years old to be with them.
Protect your health & receive a donation for St. Andrew's Help save a life and receive a donation for your organization in the process! Protect your health by finding out your risk of having a stroke by participating in the Life Line Screening that will be at St Andrew's Episcopal Church on Friday, Dec. 21. Through ultrasound, the carotid arteries can be evaluated for the buildup of fatty plaque, which is the leading cause of stroke. Register today for the Stroke, Vascular & Heart Rhythm package by either calling the special Helping Hands registration number or by signing up through the provided registration sheet (available on the flyers, which may be found in our narthex or at the parish office). By signing up for this health event, not only will you be able to receive $10 off any package of $139 or more, but St Andrew's Episcopal Church will also receive a $10 donation for every member who signs up and attends this Life Line Screening event. The Stroke, Vascular & Heart Rhythm Package includes four screenings: carotid artery, abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease and atrial fibrillation. To schedule your appointment and to receive this special offer, please sign up on the flyers provided by St Andrew's Episcopal Church or by calling the designated Helping Hands number at 1-800-324-9458. Join in the fight against vascular disease!
Did you know? Marcos Villarreal, a recent emigre from Cuba, joined our church staff Sept. 28 to help alleviate the long working hours of his brother, Rafael Yanes, St. Andrew's sexton. Please say hello to our newest, multi-linquistic staff member.

Ways to make a difference in our community Support the food pantry St. Andrew's and the Church of the Advent provide nourishment and friendly support to hungry people in our neighborhood twice a month. We gather at Advent at 5:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday each month to distribute produce. We meet again at 8:30 a.m. on the fourth Saturday to distribute boxes of non-perishable foods. Volunteers box that food on the preceding Thursday after the 7 p.m. Taize service, except during the summer when they begin at 6. A dedicated group of people from both parishes have found great satisfaction in working at the pantries. You are invited to join them, occasionally or every month. Contact Terry Zimmerman (terry.zimmerman@gmail.com, 425-3108) for more information.
Give to the 3rd Sunday Collection In addition to bringing healthy food for people, St. Andrew's also collects dry pet food for distribution at the pantry. With this assistance people are able to keep their pets at home even during hard times. The official collection is on the third Sunday of the month, but you may leave non-perishable food in the narthex any Sunday, or bring it to the parish office during the week. You are also asked to contribute monetarily by putting cash in the offering plate on the third Sunday each month. This offering is in addition to your regular pledge. If you write a check, please include Food Pantry in the memo line so it is properly distributed.
Use ValuMarket and Kroger Cards As we head into fall and the holiday seasons, don't forget to take your Kroger and ValuMarket cards with you when you shop. Use of the cards raises significant funds for our mission. Your use of the Kroger cards, for example, has enabled us to generously support Haitian disaster relief and currently will enable us to form a mission team to help rebuild tornado-ravished areas in Kentucky. ValuMarket also has been an invaluable partner in our Food Pantry, providing quantities of food at cost and contributions to our cause from their employees With both you can support our food pantry and ministries as you shop for groceries. Please let us know of if you need one or both. The cards work alike. The cards cost $5 and come with $5 loaded on them. Take the card, add money to it, and use it for all your shopping at ValuMarket. and Kroger. A percentage of your purchases will come back to us in a check. Contact Mary Jane in the Parish Office (mjcherry@mysaintandrews.org, 452-9581) to get either card. If you already use the cards, many thanks, and please continue to do so.
