Deadline’s Contenders Television: Los Angeles kicks off Emmy season with the best of the best
Welcome to Deadline’s Contenders Television: Los Angeles, where the top networks and streamers will show off their wares and Emmy hopefuls over two days of one-stop shopping for anyone interested in the best and brightest shows on television this season.
No sooner had we finished six months of Oscar season, then we were jumping headfirst into what shows are getting the buzz on the small screen and believe us, there is more content out there than ever. Just look at the lineup of studios and streamers participating: Peacock, Prime Video, National Geographic, Apple TV+, Netflix, Hulu, CBS Studios, Showtime, Fox Entertainment, Paramount+, AMC/ AMC+, HBO Max, Starz, Sony Pictures Television, ABC, Roku, ONYX Collective, and Disney+.
Over the course of two days of must-see TV on April 15 and 16, Deadline will remind you of the breadth and depth of what we’ve been watching for the past year, and in some cases, what we are about to watch. As always, our Contenders events are designed to give you a taste of what is out there, and perhaps encourage you to check it all out. We do this through informed and entertaining conversations with key creatives and talent from a variety of shows (all listed in this guide). We will also have a wide range of stars on hand,
including the likes of Natasha Lyonne sporting her best Poker Face to Your Honor himself, Bryan Cranston. A small sampling of others includes Riley Keough and Sam Claflin making their first Contenders go-round with the cast of Daisy Jones & The Six, and Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn on their final Contenders appearance with Better Call Saul. On tap as well are veterans Eugene Levy, Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren, Kerry Washington, Taron Egerton, Evan Peters and Abbott Elementary’s creator and star Quinta Brunson. And this is just a hint of who will be appearing.
There has never been a better time in the history of television for an event like this, because there has never been a time with so much content to choose from. It is virtually impossible to figure it all out for yourself, so we are here to sort it out for you, from the best in comedy like the aforementioned Abbott Elementary to new hits like Shrinking , whose co-creator and star Jason Segel will be on hand. Of course we will be covering the waterfront with the best in dramas from the mega-hit Yellowstone (that cast will be joining us) to Yellowjackets . Limited series will be highlighted as well. In fact, the latter category has become the richest in television, and this year is no different, with the much talked-about Dahmer
— Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story , Daisy Jones & The Six , Black Bird and so many others.
It was only a few years ago that Deadline came up with the idea for a Contenders event like this one as a place for people in the industry to spend a day or two with the biggest creative forces in the business to talk about the genesis and making of the shows that we watch. It was meant to be sort of a public service but has grown by leaps and bounds to try and include the vast reservoirs of content available on a daily basis. It is all designed to make you a more informed and smarter voter when the time comes to cast your ballot.
Plus, it’s a lot of fun. Where else can you spend the day networking with others who work in the same business, while also experiencing the ever-changing landscape of what television is showing off? It is no small task to put an event like this together, and we are putting you in the hands of Deadline’s editorial staff to guide you through it all. (And did we mention there is breakfast, lunch and cool prize raffles all day long?) Again, the idea is to introduce you to what these creative forces have in store and perhaps entice you to watch what we know you'll be talking about after you experience the 2023 edition of Deadline’s Contenders Television: Los Angeles. ★

Anthony covers box office, breaking film news, awards-season features and festival news. His first job in the film industry was at Savoy Pictures’ headquarters in New York, where he worked in film distribution. In the summer of 1999, he was hired by Variety and moved to Los Angeles, and remained in the newsroom covering numerous parts of the industry, including the box office, for about a decade. Prior to arriving at Deadline in the fall of 2011, where he co-edited the site’s sister publication AwardsLine, Anthony covered the box office beat for Indiewire’s Thompson on Hollywood. Matt joined the editors’ desk in March 2021 after five years as AwardsLine's assistant editor. In that role, he

The ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary follows the quirky ebb and flow in the lives of a group of teachers in the Philadelphia public school system. Despite the lack of funding and less-than-ideal working conditions, the teachers find creative new ways to help their students succeed in life. The show stars Quinta Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tyler James Williams.
AMC/AMC+ Dark Winds
Dark Winds, based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman, is a Native American crime drama set in the 1970s. The story centers on the FBI and Navajo Tribal investigation and inquiry into a bank robbery and series of murders in the town of Gallup, New Mexico. The show stars Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon and Jessica Matten.
APPLE TV+ The Big Door Prize
Based on M.O. Walsh’s 2020 novel of the same name, The Big Door Prize follows the residents of the
small town of Deerfield, whose lives are forever changed when a magical machine appears in their grocery store. The machine promises to uncover everyone’s potential, leading people to second-guess their relationships and beliefs. The series stars Chris O’Dowd, Gabrielle Dennis and Damon Gupton.
Black Bird
Based on a true story, Black Bird focuses on the arrest of charismatic drug dealer Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton). Instead of serving his 10-year prison sentence, an attorney offers Jimmy the chance to walk free if he can get an alleged serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Hauser), to admit where he’s buried his victims. The show also features Ray Liotta and Sepideh Moafi.
Extrapolations
In 2037, climate change has ravaged the planet. As fires scorch the Middle East and rising tides engulf sinking cities, world leaders, scientists and everyday citizens must figure out how to save what’s left of life on Earth. The series is told through eight interconnected
stories exploring climate change’s devastating impact. Extrapolations stars Kit Harrington, Meryl Streep and Sienna Miller.
Loot
Apple TV+’s Loot centers around the semi-glamorous life of Molly Novak (Maya Rudolph). After divorcing her wealthy tech husband because of his infidelity, Molly is suddenly saddled with $87 billion and she sets out to spend every last penny of it following her heart’s desire. Loot also stars Adam Scott, MJ Rodriguez, Joel Kim Booster, Ron Funches and Nat Faxon.
The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy
In The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy, the comedian and actor journeys through some of the world’s most unique and beautiful destinations. The eight-episode series follows Levy as he travels to Finland, Japan, South Africa and more, showcasing his experiences as he talks to locals and partakes in new places and cultures. Levy is also an executive producer of the show along with David Brindley.

In Season 2, they end up in the city of Schmicago, which will pay homage to musicals from the ’60s and ’70s.
Shrinking
In Apple TV+’s comedy-drama Shrinking, Jason Segel stars as Jimmy Laird, a depressed therapist grieving the loss of his wife. Unhinged by his grief, Jimmy affects the lives of his patients, co-workers and friends in professional and surprisingly unethical life-changing ways. The show is co-created by Segel and Ted Lasso alums Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence.

The sitcom Ghosts centers around a young couple named Samantha (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar), who inherit a beautiful but crumbling country estate. As they redesign it into a bed and breakfast, they discover that the spirits of its deceased residents still occupy the home.
DISNEY+ American Born Chinese
Based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel, American Born Chinese follows Jin Wang (Ben Wang), an average teenager trying to balance high school and his immigrant home
life. A meeting with a new foreign exchange student turns his life upside down as he soon becomes involved in a battle between Gods of Chinese mythology. Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and James Hong also star.

Based on a British series of the same name, Accused is a crime anthology that follows a series of individual cases from the defendant’s perspective. Each episode details what led the person to commit the crime, their defense, and the outcome through a nuanced and thought-provoking perspective. The show stars Michael Chiklis, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Rachel Bilson, Margo Martindale and Abigail Breslin.
FOX ENTERTAINMENT Animal Control
After a former cop named Frank (Joel McHale) is fired for trying to expose corruption in his precinct, he finds cushy work in Seattle’s Animal Control department. While there, he and his co-workers find their lives complicated by humans rather than the animals they chase. The series also stars Vella Lovell and Michael Rowland.

Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark Comedian and radio personality
Marc Maron stars in his first-ever HBO live comedy special filmed at New York City’s Town Hall. In the special, Maron intimately details his experience with getting older, combating anti-Semitism, the death of his partner, his relationship with his father and why it’s best to have cats over children.

The Great
Hulu’s The Great reigns supreme in its third season, further exploring the dysfunctional relationship between Peter (Nicholas Hoult) and Catherine (Elle Fanning). After trying to kill Peter, Catherine attempts to salvage their marriage while also facing damning complications from her new war with the Ottoman Empire on the cusp of the Pugachev Rebellion.
History of the World, Part II
HBO MAX House of the Dragon
This prequel—set nearly two centuries before HBO’s popular series Game of Thrones—showcases the early reign of House Targaryen. Based on George R. R. Martin’s novel Fire and Blood, the
History of the World, Part II is a sketch comedy sequel to the 1981 Mel Brooks film, History of the World, Part I. Each episode parodies legendary events from different periods in history, such as depicting fictional scenarios between Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant and what it would be like if Sigmund Freud gave a masterclass on psychoanalysis. The show stars Ike Barinholtz, Nick Kroll and Wanda Sykes.
Tiny Beautiful Things
Based on the best-selling collection of essays by Cheryl Strayed, the TV adaptation of Tiny Beautiful Things stars Kathryn Hahn as Clare, a writer who suddenly becomes an esteemed advice columnist at the same time that her own personal life falling apart. The limited series also stars Merritt Wever, Sarah Pidgeon, Quentin Plair and Tanzyn Crawford.
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC A Small Light
This drama miniseries is based on the real-life story of Miep Gies (Bel Powley), the young woman who hid Anne Frank (Billie Boullet) and her family during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. Miep is also credited with finding Anne’s diary, which was given to her father, Otto, the only member of the Frank family to survive the Holocaust.

Netflix’s Beef is a dark comedy steeped in revenge. The series, penned by Lee Sung Jin and produced by A24, follows the twisted lives of Danny Cho (Steven Yeun), a downtrodden contractor, and the affluent Amy Lau (Ali Wong) after the two of them cross paths in an antagonistic road rage incident. ONYX COLLECTIVE UnPrisoned
UnPrisoned is a comedy-drama centered on Paige Alexander (Kerry Washington), a psychotherapist and single mother who finds her life interrupted by the return of her jailed father, Edwin (Delroy Lindo). Upon his release after 17 years behind bars, Edwin moves in with his teenage grandson and daughter, forcing them to confront lingering traumas from the past. It also stars Marque Richardson, Faly Rakotohavana and Brenda Song.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is a spinoff prequel to the 1978 musical Grease. Four years before the events portrayed in the original film, the series follows the pinkjacket-wearing gang as they rouse Rydell High in the fight against conformity. The miniseries created by Nick Antosca and based on true events follows Robert Berchtold (Jake Lacy), a serial child kidnapper. After becoming close friends with the Broberg family, Berchtold kidnaps their daughter Jan, played at different ages by Mckenna Grace and Hendrix Yancey, twice within the span of two years. The cast also includes Colin Hanks, Lio Tipton and Anna Paquin.
Mrs. Davis
David Lindelof and Tara Hernandez pit faith against technology in this sci-fi drama series for Peacock. The story follows Simone (Betty Gilpin), a nun set on battling an all-powerful Artificial Intelligence known as “Mrs. Davis”, with help from a resistance group and her ex-boyfriend Wiley (Jake McDorman). The series will debut on Peacock on April 20.
Poker Face
Natasha Lyonne stars as Charlie Cale, a woman on the run in this series created by Rian Johnson. After her uncanny ability to detect when someone is lying gets her into trouble with a mob boss, Charlie takes to the road for safety. But with every stop, she finds herself using her powers of detection and inescapably embroiled in a new murder mystery with a new cast of colorful characters.

Based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings, the series is set thousands of years before the events of the book. During a time of relative peace in the Second Age of Middle-earth, the series covers all the major events of the period, from the creation of the Rings of Power to the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron.

Adapted from the Israeli series Kvodo, Your Honor stars Bryan Cranston as Michael Desiato, a New Orleans judge. After his son kills someone in an accidental hit-and-run, Michael’s decision to protect him sends him down a deadly path, resulting in his own incarceration. Season 2 takes place after Michael’s release from prison as he grapples with the New Orleans mob and his son’s death.

The prequel to the acclaimed series Breaking Bad, this spinoff has matched that crime drama’s level of acclaim. Starring as Jimmy McGill, Bob Odenkirk masterfully charts the character’s path from con man to small-time lawyer to criminal-for-hire Saul Goodman. After six seasons, the series had its finale last August.
