Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Avatar: The Way of Water Decision to Leave Eternal Spring EO

THE RACE BEGINS

Every year, as the lights dim on the last panel of one of our marathon Contenders events, I think to myself… Well, it can never get bigger than that.

And every year, perhaps inevitably, it does.

So, it should come as no surprise that we have a record number of titles in this year’s lineup for Contenders LA. And where else will you find a list of names so stellar you could construct an entire galaxy?

Carey Mulligan, Jennifer Connelly, Jessica Chastain, Guillermo del Toro and Janelle Monáe are just a small handful of the artists that’ll have visited the Contenders stage before we’ve

even hit the lunch break. And once we’re all fed, Luca Guadagnino, Claire Foy, Jennifer Lawrence, Angela Bassett and Park Chan-wook will be lifting us away from any suggestion of an afternoon slump.

But Contenders is about discovery, too, so be on the lookout for the newcomers to the race whose careers seem poised to flourish. Gabriel LaBelle is exceptional in his breakout role in The Fabelmans , and we must spare a thought for the pressure that an actor charged with playing the young Steven Spielberg—by Steven Spielberg—must have felt on his first day on set. It’s on Danielle Deadwyler’s

extraordinarily accomplished shoulders that Till rests, as she brings us right into the pain and resolve of Mamie Till-Mobley’s fight for justice. And Austin Butler so embodies the king in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis that it’s as though he lives again—can we start a petition to get him a Vegas residency?

There are so many panels today that it’s almost impossible to detail them all. But what’s clear is that cinema is alive and well, in its many forms. From the blast and bombast of Top Gun: Maverick, to the surreal serenity of a donkey’s life in EO, film is an artform that never ceases to demonstrate an exquisite gamut of stories big and

small, global and personal, fantastical and grounded, and tragic and funny.

All of this and more is there for the taking for you, our delightful audience, this year. And literally the only cost of your admittance is having to bear the deep indignity of enduring my pallid attempts at comedy as your host and emcee. I’m doing my best to improve, I promise. But I hope at the very least that I’ll be able to make it up to you by sending some of you home with delightful raffle prizes from our sponsors. It’s the least I could do.

Joe oversees Deadline’s awards coverage, including its dedicated print magazine for the Oscar and Emmy seasons, AwardsLine. He also edits Deadline’s special “Disruptors” edition for the Cannes Film Festival and serves as the emcee for its Contenders events. He has been aboard since 2012. Prior to joining, his work regularly appeared in his native UK—for outlets including The Sunday Times and The Guardian—and around the world. He has also worked extensively in film and television, producing EPK and production notes and working as a unit publicist. He is a member of BAFTA and has sat on multiple juries for the BAFTA Film Awards.

Mike joined Deadline in 2010 after working at Variety for 20 years as a reporter, writer and columnist. He was not only nationally recognized as Variety's premiere film reporter but also for his “Dish” and “The Buzz” columns. Mike is known for his industry relationships and his ability to break news wherever it happens, including on the ground at festivals like Sundance, Cannes and Toronto. He also is an author: Doubleday published his book about The Three Stooges, From Amalgamated Morons to American Icons , which ABC turned into a

telepic executive produced by Mel Gibson. One of Mike’s early jobs in journalism was editor of the wellknown Media Industry Newsletter (MIN). He then joined New York Newsday as a columnist, reviewer and entertainment writer. During his career, he has written for numerous magazines including Playboy, Details, TV Guide and Esquire.

PETE HAMMOND AWARDS COLUMNIST/ CHIEF FILM CRITIC

Pete, widely considered to be one of the pre-eminent awards analysts for both film and television, has for the past 11 years been Deadline's Awards

Columnist covering what is seemingly now the year-round Oscar and Emmy seasons. He is also Deadline's Chief Film Critic, having previously reviewed films for MovieLine, Boxoffice magazine, Backstage, Hollywood.com and Maxim, as well as Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide for which he was a contributing editor. In addition to writing, Pete is also host of both the KCET Cinema Series and the weekly KCET television series, Must See Movies. He previously held producing positions at Entertainment Tonight, Extra, Access Hollywood, The Arsenio Hall Show, The Martin Short Show and AMC Networks and is the recipient of five Emmy nominations for writing. Pete is only the second journalist

Based on a true story, Thirteen Lives sees 12 boys and the coach of a Thai soccer team exploring the Tham Luang cave when an unexpected rainstorm traps them in a chamber deep inside the mountain. Entombed behind a maze of flooded cave tunnels, they face impossible odds until a team of worldclass cave divers navigate through miles of dangerous cave networks to find the boys, only to discover they face a dangerous rescue operation. Ron Howard directs the project which stars Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell and Joel Edgerton.

APPLE ORIGINAL FILMS Causeway

Director Lila Neugebauer’s feature debut is a somber psychological drama that examines the bonds of budding friendships and shared trauma. After suffering a traumatic brain injury while serving in Afghanistan, Lynsey (Jennifer Lawrence) reluctantly returns to her hometown where she struggles to adjust to a normal life. While grappling with restlessness, Lynsey befriends

Luck

Peggy Holmes directs this animated comedy following a young woman plagued by misfortune. When Sam (Eva Noblezada) finds and loses a lucky penny, a black cat named Bob (Simon Pegg) brings her into the mystical Land of Luck where the two must go on a journey to retrieve it. Flula Borg, Lil Rel Howery, Jane Fonda and Whoopi Goldberg lend their voice talents.

Armageddon Time

James Gray wrote, directed and produced this comingof-age drama based on his childhood experiences. In 1980 Queens, a friendship between a young Jewish-American Paul Graff (Banks Repeta) and his rebellious African-American classmate Johnny (Jaylin Webb) leads him to struggle with expectations from his family and growing up in a world of privilege, inequality and prejudice. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and Anthony Hopkins.

IFC FILMS Corsage

Vicky Krieps stars as Empress Elisabeth of Austria in this fictional account of a year in the life of the Empress, written and directed by Austrian filmmaker Marie Kruetzer. On Christmas Eve 1877, Elisabeth attempts to maintain her public image as a beauty icon as she turns 40 and

is deemed an old woman.

LOFTY SKY ENTERTAINMENT Eternal Spring

Jason Loftus directs this documentary based on the Falun Gong’s 2002 hijacking of the broadcast stations in China. Using the animation of Chinese comic book artist Daxiong, a Falun Gong practitioner who fled China in the aftermath, Loftus retraces the events two decades later with a combination of present-day footage and 3D animation. Eternal Spring brings to life a story of defiance against persecution and the determination to speak up for political and religious freedom.

MUBI Decision to Leave

Co-written and directed by Park Chan-wook, this neo-noir mystery follows insomniac detective Hae-Jun (Park Hae-il) as he investigates the death of a retired immigration worker. The investigation initially leads to the victim’s young wife, Seorae (Tang Wei), but becomes complicated as the detective becomes obsessed with her. Park Chan-wook won Best Director for the film at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Daniel Craig returns as famous detective Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson’s second installment of the Knives Out series. After receiving a mysterious invite from tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton), Benoit travels to Greece for a “murder mystery party” that soon becomes an active investigation. The film also stars Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista and Kate Hudson.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

Guillermo del Toro directs this warm and wild stopmotion animated adaptation of the classic story Pinocchio from Carlo Collodi with Mark Gustafson. It’s a project del Toro has nurtured for years and marks his first animated

feature film as director. Set in Italy during the reign of Benito Mussolini, Pinocchio filters the original Italian novel through del Toro’s typically gothic lens. Woodcarver Geppetto gets more than he bargains for when his wish to bring a wooden boy to life comes true.

The Good Nurse Academy Award winners Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain star in this true crime thriller examining the life and downfall of a serial killer nurse. Nurse Amy Loughren (Chastain) develops a strong friendship with co-worker Charlie Cullen (Redmayne), but a series of mysterious patient deaths forces Loughren to see who Cullen really is. This marks the first English language film for Danish director Tobias Lindholm.

The Wonder

Sebastián Lelio’s The Wonder is a psychological period drama that follows an English nurse’s immaculate investigation in the Irish countryside. Set in 1862 Ireland, Lib Wright (Florence Pugh) is brought to a small village to investigate the validity of a young girl who has claimed to have survived without eating for months. The film also stars Tom Burke and Elaine Cassidy.

White Noise

When a terrible accident spawns a toxic plume of smoke that threatens the lives of everyone in a cushy suburban town, Jack Gladney (Adam Driver), his wife Babette (Greta Gerwig) and their children are forced to reckon with the concepts of American

consumerism, environmental disasters and mortality. Noah Baumbach wrote and directed this black comedy based on the 1985 novel by Don DeLillo. The film also stars Don Cheadle, Jodi Turner-Smith and André 3000.

Babylon

Babylon, written and directed by Damien Chazelle, offers a fictionalized look at the decadence and destructive glamor of 1920s Hollywood. Set during the silent era, the film follows a cast of industry players who try to make and maintain a name for themselves during the transition into sound motion pictures. Babylon stars Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Tobey Maguire.

Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick follows the return of U.S. Navy Pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) as an instructor for the U.S. Navy-Fighter Weapons school. Maverick’s ability to lead the newest Top Gun recruits toward success is challenged when he is tasked to train the son of his deceased best friend, "Goose" Bradshaw. The film also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Glen Powell.

Director Jerzy Skolimowski’s minimalist drama EO follows the story of a Polish circus donkey that discovers the best and worst of humanity during his travels. Along with winning the 2022 Cannes Jury Prize,

EO has been submitted for the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards. EO stars Sandra Drzymalska, Lorenzo Zurzolo and Isabelle Huppert.

SONY PICTURES CLASSICS Living

This reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru explores the balance between morality and mortality. Directed by Oliver Hermanus, Living, set in 1950s London, follows Mr. Williams (Bill Nighy), a mundane accountant, who is suddenly diagnosed with a terminal illness. Eager to find meaning to his life before it’s too late, he sets out on a quest to make new memories.

One Fine Morning

One Fine Morning, written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve, centers around a struggling mom caught in the throes of passion. After losing her husband, Sandra (Léa Seydoux) is left raising her 8-year-old daughter and taking care of her ailing father. While trying to find a proper nursing home, she starts an extramarital affair with a married friend.

The Son

Florian Zeller’s The Son stars Hugh Jackman as Peter Miller, a busy father trying to make amends with his troubled teenage son while grappling with his own disjointed upbringing and his divorce from his ex-wife. The film also serves as a spiritual successor to 2020’s The Father Starring alongside Jackman is Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby, Zen McGrath and Anthony Hopkins.

UNITED ARTISTS RELEASING Bones and All Bones and All is a comingof-age story that follows the unconventional lives of two young adult drifters hungry for love and companionship. Maren (Taylor Russell), an 18-year-old cannibal, embarks on a journey across America with the help of a fellow cannibal named Lee (Timothée Chalamet), in order to track down her mysterious origins. The film is directed by Luca Guadagnino.

Till

Chinonye Chukwu brings together the true story of civil rights activist Mamie Till-Mobley, played by Danielle Deadwyler. After the brutal lynching of her 14-year-old son Emmett (Jalyn Hall) while he was on a trip to Mississippi, Till-Mobley embarks on a relentless pursuit of justice and becomes a key member of the civil rights movement. The film also stars Frankie Faison, John Douglas Thompson and Whoopi Goldberg.

Women Talking

In Women Talking, eight women confined to a conservative religious colony conduct secret meetings to discuss a series of sexual assaults they’ve experienced by the men in the community. The film is written and directed by Sarah Polley and based on the novel of the same name by Miriam Toews. Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley and Frances McDormand also star.

UNIVERSAL PICTURES She Said

Based on the 2019 book by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, this film depicts the work of the New York Times journalists as they exposed Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct. Their story helped launch the #MeToo movement and gave a voice to the women whose allegations had been silenced by Hollywood for decades. Carrie Mulligan and Zoe Kazan star as Twohey and Kantor.

The Fabelmans

The Fabelmans is a love letter to cinema and a fictionalized look at director Steven Spielberg’s own childhood upbringing and inspirations. Set in the aftermath of the postWorld War II era in Arizona, a young man named Sammy (Gabriel LaBelle), finds himself enamored with movies that help contextualize the world around him. The film stars Paul Dano, Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen.

WALT DISNEY STUDIOS Avatar: The Way of Water

The plight of the Na’vi fighting to protect their seaside oasis from outside invaders sees a new chapter in James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water . Some years after the first film, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) have formed a comfortable family life on Pandora.
