IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT A YEAR HAS PASSED SINCE WE BROUGHT YOU THE FIRST EDITION OF DEADLINE’S SOUND & SCREEN FILM SHOWCASE and we are delighted to be here again to showcase of some of this year’s most talented musicians and the magical scores they have composed for the film industry this year. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: music is an essential component for how one experiences a film and has so much bearing on a movie’s tone and feeling. So, what better way to relive some of this year’s most exciting film compositions than to experience it live at UCLA’s Royce Hall?
This year’s line-up is an incredible one. We’ve got Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, co-composers and songwriters for Warner Bros. Pictures’ smash hit Barbie are here to walk us through how they approached that film’s music and wrote the catchy tune “I’m Just Ken”. Additionally, we’ve got Scottish musician Gary Clark here to talk us through his most recent collaboration with John Carney for musical drama Flora and Son from Apple Original Films. Prolific composer and conductor Mark Graham is also here to talk about his recent work on Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon
we’re delighted to be welcoming back esteemed and prolific songwriter Diane Warren, a 14-time Oscar nominee, who is here for her work on two films: Flamin’ Hot and 80 For Brady. Warren has worked with artists such as Elton John, Celine Dion and Tina Turner just to name a few and received an honorary Oscar last year. Composer Martin Phipps is here too, to showcase the score from Columbia Pictures and Apple Original Films’ Joaquin Phoenix starrer Napoleon. YOUR MODERATORS ANTHONY D’ALESSANDRO EDITORIAL DIRECTOR/BOX OFFICE EDITOR
Anthony covers box office, breaking film news, awards-season features and festival news. His first job in the film industry was at Savoy Pictures’ headquarters in New York where he worked in film distribution. In the summer of 1999, he was hired by Variety and moved to Los Angeles and remained in the newsroom covering numerous parts of the industry, including box office, for about a decade. Prior to arriving at Deadline in the fall of 2011, where he co-edited the site’s sister publication AwardsLine, Anthony covered the box office beat for Indiewire’s Thompson on Hollywood. He also co-produced Matt Walsh’s film A Better You. MATT GROBAR FILM REPORTER
Matt joined the editors’ desk in March 2021 after five years as AwardsLine’s Assistant Editor. In that role, he contributed to the coverage and editing of the magazines throughout the year, focusing on artist interviews revolving around awards season and its big nights including the Oscars and Emmys. Matt also manages the Production Value video series, which spotlights the premier craft talent working in film and TV. He is also part of Deadline’s festival studio team at the likes of Sundance, Tribeca and Toronto. Before Deadline, he worked at UTA, 8thDay Pictures and Infinity Management International. PETER WHITE TELEVISION EDITOR
Peter, who joined Deadline in 2017, is a respected veteran TV journalist who previously worked at UK-based Broadcast, where after starting there in 2013, rose to News Editor where he was responsible for putting together the weekly magazine as well as breaking daily news. Before that, he was deputy editor of Television Business International magazine. He covers the television industry from Deadline’s Los Angeles bureau.
YOUR S PANELISTS NATHAN BARR American film and television composer Nathan Barr is best known for his prolific work in film television, where he’s composed scores for films such as Hostel, The Dukes of Hazzard, The Last Exorcism, True Blood, The Americans, Carnival Row and The Great. He won an Emmy in 2020 for his work on the miniseries Hollywood. One of his first jobs saw him work under the tutelage of Hans Zimmer on films As Good As It Gets and The Prince of Egypt. Barr then branched out and began composing on his own. He recently co-composed the score for Apple Original Films’ The Beanie Bubble. GARY CLARK Scottish musician Gary Clark began his career as the singer-songwriter-

instrumentalist in the band Danny Wilson, penning the group’s hit “Mary’s Prayer”. After the band split, he moved into song writing and production and has worked with artists including Natalie Imbruglia, Liz Phair, Lloyd Cole, The Wanted, McFly and Demi Lovato. His songs have been used frequently in films and television, featuring in There’s Something About Mary, Nightwatch, Charlie’s Angels, Grey’s Anatomy and many more. He wrote and co-wrote original songs for John Carney’s 2016 movie Sing Street and is exec music producer and composer of Carney’s Modern Love TV series. Most recently, he worked with Carney on Flora and Son. MICHAEL GIACCHINO Composer-director Michael Giacchino has film score credits including The Incredibles, Coco, Jojo Rabbit, Ratatouille, Star Trek, Jurassic World, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Spider- Man: No Way Home and more. His score for Pixar’s Up earned him an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, the Broadcast Film Critics’ Choice Award and two Grammy

for the video game adaptation of The Lost World: Jurassic Park, which was the first PlayStation game to have a live orchestral score. He went on to score numerous video games after that. His work in the gaming sphere sparked the interest of J.J. Abrams, with whom Giacchino has a long-standing relationship with resulting in the composer working on projects such as Alias, Lost, Mission Impossible III, three Star Trek films and Super 8. He’s recently scored films such as Taika Waititi’s sports comedy Next Goal Wins and J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow.
MARK GRAHAM MARK GRAHAM Mark Graham has worked across hundreds of projects from tentpole blockbusters to indie films to Seth Macfarlane’s annual Christmas concerts. A prolific composer and conductor, Graham’s relationships are what keep collaborators coming back. He’s worked with a raft of top filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Stephen King, Wes Anderson and Guillermo del Toro to name a few. His credits include Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Avengers: End Game, Only Murders In The Building and Doctor Sleep. LAURA KARPMAN A bold, incandescent talent, composer Laura Karpman creates powerful, imaginative scores that push the boundaries of storytelling. Her award-

winning music, spanning film, television, theater, interactive media and live performance, reflects an audaciously creative, prodigious fresh spirit. She has collaborated with filmmakers such as Francis Ford and Sophia Coppola, Nia DaCosta, Alex Gibney, Misha Green, Rory Kennedy, Kasi Lemmons, Laura Nix, Sam Pollard and Steven Spielberg. This year is perhaps her most prolific to date, with six film and TV projects: Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed (Max), What If? (Disney+), Ms. Marvel (Disney+), 61st Street (The CW), The Marvels (Disney) and American Fiction (MGM/Amazon). She’s also the leading composwer across the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is working on Disney’s upcoming feature The Marvels. He and his wife Kristin Gore co-directed comedy-drama The Beanie Bubble for Apple Original Films, which he co-composed with Nathan Barr. MARTIN PHIPPS Martin Phipps scored his first TV drama Eureka Street in 2002 and won two BAFTAs, five Ivor Novello Awards and received multiple Emmy nominations for writing music to many of the most interesting series

MARK RONSON Mark Ronson is an internationally renowned Oscar- and Grammy-winning songwriter and producer. Most recently, he composed the music for the film Barbie with Andrew Wyatt, co-writing several of the songs. He also produced the soundtrack with Barbie writer-director-executive producer Greta Gerwig. Ronson is a co-writer of the song “Shallow,” recorded by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born, for which he earned an Academy MARK RONSON
Award for Best Original Song, a Golden Globe Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, and two Grammy Awards. Ronson also contributed to the soundtrack of Disney’s live-action feature Jungle Book. In addition, Ronson has also produced and/or written numerous chart-topping songs for such artists as Adele, Paul McCartney, Miley Cyrus, Duran Duran and more, including work on multi-Grammy-winning album Back to Black by Amy Winehouse, garnering him their prestigious Producer of the Year, and his own Grammy-winning global smash hit “Uptown Funk” with Bruno Mars. LUKASZ ‘L.U.C.’ ROSTKOWSKI Lukasz ‘L.U.C.’ Rostkowski is an award-winning conceptual composer, art director and producer. He’s worked across many TV productions such as Top Model and Erynie. His Sleepoholic music was chosen by Emmanuel Lubezki and Alejandro Inarritu for their special VR project Carne y Arena, which was awarded a special Oscar at the Academy’s 9th Annual Governor’s Awards.

Rostkowski has worked with a raft of famous composers and animators such as DK Welchman, Hugh Welchman and Tomasz Baginski. He recently composed the music for the Welchmans’ latest feature The Peasants. JOSEPH SHIRLEY Composer Joseph Shirley recently scored season 3 of Disney+’s The Mandalorian and Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut Creed III. Upcoming projects include producing music for DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls Band Together, which premieres November 17th; and scoring MGM’s The Underdoggs, slated to premiere January 26th, 2024. Notable credits include Paul Feig’s Netflix feature film The School of Good and Evil; Disney+’s hit series The Book of Boba Fett, created by Jon Favreau; and Netflix’s Jackass Forever documentary, directed by Jeff Tremaine. His music can also be heard on Amazon Studios’s animated series Fairfax;

DIANE WARREN Diane Warren is considered one of the most prolific contemporary songwriters of recent times. She’s written for artists including Elton John, Tina Turner, Barbara Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack and Roy Orbison. She’s penned a raft of number-one songs including Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time”, Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me’ and Aerosmith “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing”. She’s won a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award and two Golden Globe awards and his been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The multiple Oscar-nominee wrote the song “The Fire Inside” for Flamin’ Hot and “Gonna Be You” for 80 For Brady. ANTHONY WILLIS

BAFTA-nominated composer Anthony Willis is responsible for the scores of Oscar-winning writer-director Emerald Fennell’s drama thriller Promising Young Woman as well as her latest project Saltburn. Additionally, he is behind the music for Gerard Johnstone’s hit M3GAN for Blumhouse and Universal and Nate Parker’s drama Solitary. His previous works include Dreamworks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon: Homecoming, seasons 6-8 of Epic’s video game sensation Fortnite, Sonly Playstation’s video game Knack II, Michelle Morgan’s comedy It Happened In L.A. and David Yarovesky’s thriller The Hive, on which he collaborated with renowned DJ Steve Aoki. Further credits include Jumanji: The Next Level, Pirates of the Caribbean, The King’s Man, The Birth of a Nation and Wreck it Ralph 2. ANDREW WYATT Andrew Wyatt is an Academy- and Grammy Award-winning songwriter whose collaborations with various pop icons (Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Charli XCX, Lykke Li) and industry stalwarts secured his status as a generational talent. An awards season sweeper, Wyatt earned widespread exaltation for co-penning the multi-platinum masterpiece “Shallow,” performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in Cooper’s 2018 hit A Star Is Born. His work can be found on numerous film soundtracks, and most recently, Wyatt reteamed with longtime collaborator Mark Ronson to write songs and score for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Born and raised in New York City, at 18 Wyatt formed the short-lived experimental pop band Funkraphiliacs alongside Greg Kurstin, before signing as a solo artist with Capitol Records. He also co-founded The A.M. with former Jeff Buckley band members, but it was his role as the lead singer and co-songwriter for the Swedish band Miike Snow that ushered in widespread recognition.

Saltburn This psychosexual drama by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell tells a decadent tale of desire and obsession. Set in the mid-2000s, the story follows Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), a young Oxford University student who becomes deeply enamored by the charms and aristocratic lifestyle of fellow student Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for the summer. APPLE ORIGINAL FILMS Flora and Son Single mom Flora (Eve Hewson) is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up LA musician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music. From the musical mind of John Carney, Flora and Son explores the bond between a mother and son on a journey toward a new harmony. FLORA AND SON
Killers of the Flower Moon Directed by Martin Scorsese and adapted to screen by Eric Roth from David Grann’s true crime book, Killers of the Flower Moon depicts the unjust serial murders of oil-wealthy Osage Nation Native Americans during the 1920s Oklahoma. This string of crimes, also known as The Reign of Terror, also led to the formation of the FBI. The film stars Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Jesse Plemons. The Beanie Bubble Why, in the 1990s, did the world suddenly start treating the stuffed animals known as Beanie Babies like gold? Ty Warner (Zach Galifianakis) was a frustrated toy salesman until his collaboration with three women grew his masterstroke of an idea into the biggest toy craze in history. The true-life dramedy is the feature directorial debut of Kristin Gore and Damian Kulash. It also stars Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook and Geraldine Viswanathan.

Directed by Ridley Scott, Napoleon tells the story of the military leader’s origins and his tenacious climb to becoming emperor. The film also explores his fraught and passionate relationship with his wife, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby). NAPOLEON
NETFLIX Society of the Snow Society of the Snow tells the harrowing true story of a group of passengers aboard the ill-fated Uruguayan Andes flight in 1972. En route to Chile, the Uruguayan rugby team found themselves stranded on a glacier in the heart of the Andes mountains for more than two months. The survivors were forced to resort to extreme measures just to stay alive. ORION PICTURES/ AMAZON MGM STUDIOS American Fiction Jeffrey Wright, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, Tracee Ellis Ross and Skyler Wright star in this scathing satire on the publishing industry and its treatment of serious works by Black writers. One of those writers is Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Wright). He travels back to his hometown of Boston to attend a book festival, but the turnout is low in favor of another book seminar with author Sinatra Golden’s (Rae) bestseller We Lives In Da Ghetto.
