Wake the Tiger is a new, one of a kind experience in Bristol, the worlds first Amazement Park created by the team behind Boomtown Festival. We were contacted in early 2020 to discuss the initial concept of the park and start looking into ideas for design and interactive content. A number of concept and layout designs were created to discover how best to use the space, an old paint factory with many out buildings and industrial units.

The concept was to create an immersive space of artwork, interactivity and story telling which would appeal to all ages, with an over arching idea of connectivity with each other and the planet.

We concentrated on the designs for the main hub, a themed street in the heart of Meridia where the 4 guilds of the story (Earth, Air, Water & Fire) would bring their collections of objects and artefacts to be distributed through the Sorting O ce into the following magical realm.

The following document shows a select portion of the work we created for this project and focusses on the designs, features and finishes we carried out as a company. Other teams were involved in the overall build of the park, some images may show snippets of others work, scenic painting etc, although the main focus of all images has been created by our team.

EARTH PORTAL - DESIGN

The first area of Wake the Tiger where our work can be found is the Earth Portal, shortly after passing the park entrance.

Part of the initial park story is focussed around the appearance of a magical tree in the heart of the development site, which it is discovered to reveal a portal into the world of meridia.

We created early concept sketches and the following 3D designs to figure out how best to use the small space while being able to fit as big a tree as possible.

EARTH PORTAL - THEMING

The main tree was formed from steel and wire mesh to create the overall shape. Concrete render was then applied and sculpted to replicate tree bark and moss growth. We had to incorporate led tape lighting into the bark, which we managed to hide within the bark of the tree.

Fire rated foliage was then used to create the tree canopy.

We painted the timber constructed room in an idustrial metal e ect to tie the experience into the industrial feel of the surrounding area.

MERIDIA - CONCEPTING

From the early stages of the park conception the inital thoughts were focussed on the reveal of Meridia, the magical world within which the story is based.

We worked up numerous illustrations focussing on both overall look developments and smaller details, such as the characters who would inhabit the world.

The story tells of 4 guilds, Earth, Fire, Wind & Water and the initial street area was to include dwellings for each of these guilds.

Also during the initial stages we created a scale model of the building and started to play with ideas for features to fit within the park. This helped early on to think about the general layout, foot flow and areas to focus the more detailled themed features.

This page shows some of the early iterations of the concept, while the follwing pages show renders from the model which were used for the final design.

MERIDIA - THEMING

The construction of the park was a joint e ort between ourselves, various other trades, freelancers and designers. We were tasked with overseeing the build of the street and creating the finer details, set dressing and final scenic painting touches there after. We used a range of our skill base on this project, such as murals, sign writing, prop making, mold making and casting, concrete sculpted finishes and scenic painting.

SORTING OFFICE - CONCEPTS

Before the full construction of the park was carried out we were asked to build a showcase room to convey the idea to potential investors. The idea of the sorting o ce was conceived early on as part of the story, a place where the Meridians would bring there finds from around the world and send to the 4 guilds who would in turn feed the magic of the park.

The investors showcase was a great success and initial funding goals were achieved shortly thereafter.

SORTING OFFICE - THEMING

A mix of new built features and found objects were brought in to create the sorting o ce and it was great fun putting together the display on the workbench table.

Within the room are various animations, such as the sorting computer and inspection chambers, which we created bespoke for the park. Once past the sorting o ce the following themed spaces were created by other talented artistis, it was a real pleasure colaborating with them on this project and working on something new and refreshing.
