BIG BIKE EUROPE responds to feedback with earlier date in 2014 MD Magazine is pleased to confirm that the acclaimed Big Bike Europe hall at Messe Essen in Germany is now available for the 2014 expo for the date originally intended for the show. The three-day trade and consumer show is slated for April 11th, 12th and 13th 2014, with the addition of a second hall expected to be confirmed in July, when the first draft show floorplan is unveiled. AMD Magazine publisher and Big Bike Europe expo organizer Robin Bradley said that “the issue of when a concept such as Big Bike Europe would be best held was always one of the important factors to research, and by the time the original launch announcement was made in August 2011, we had already spent two years taking industry feedback. “The first issue to resolve was whether to stage the show late in the year or to go for a Spring timing. There are still plenty of good reasons why something like a November or December date would be worth considering, but the weather and
A
crowded calendar at that time of the year definitely make a Spring date, closer to the cash cycle of the market, the better option. “We had originally looked at dates between February and May, and the one that we always favored was the second weekend of April. That date avoids any other major show commitments for exhibitors (on either side of the Atlantic) and is one on which Easter very rarely falls. “However, for this first year we were constrained by venue availability. Once we had seen the hall 10, 11 and 12 complex at Messe Essen (Messe Ost) we were hugely impressed by the nature of the space, but were forced into taking a risk with a May date that coincided with a public holiday in that region of Germany and various other industry and consumer distractions. “Three weeks before this year’s first annual Big Bike Europe we were informed that the date we originally wanted had become available for 2014 and on a moving forward basis. “While there are a slew of reasons why first year attendance was at the lower end of our expectations, not
least the late start to the season meaning that dealerships had only just started to get busy, we have to assume that the date we chose must have had something to do with it. “Either way, there is no question that our new date will make it easier for authorized/franchised dealers and independent shop owners to spare the time for a show visit, and although only four weeks earlier, those four weeks punch above their weight in terms of the buying and selling cycle of the market.” Altogether some 1,000 plus industry professionals attended Big Bike Europe this year, and based on the pre-registration scheme, at least 187 franchised dealers and independent custom shops were represented. Added to that, some 40 or 50 of the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building competitor community were dealers, and with exhibitors directly inviting dealers, and a handful who paid to get in, total “dealer attendance” for the first Big Bike Europe expo is being put at around 250 shops – plus a dozen or so international parts and accessory importers/distributors.

Price Point builds have interesting implications IX months ago I was able to report that the parts and accessory industry had done “okay” in 2012 – profits had been better than in 2011, largely down to continued good housekeeping, and sales had been generally up, albeit mostly by low single digits. Compared to where our market has been during the past five or six years, anything that suggested stability and sustainability had to be taken as a positive and something that could be built on. That general perception continued in the feedback I got at the V-Twin Expo this year. Very few (if any) of the exhibitors I spoke to reported a continued loss of sales in 2012, with most actually quite bullish about where they were at in cycle terms. Realism about sales was balanced by relief that the bottom of the market did indeed appear to have been traversed. Since then the Spring selling season appears to have gone reasonably well for most of the people I have been speaking to – although the crazy weather patterns that now appear to be the new default for the northern hemisphere have made month-on-month comparisons difficult. Some traditionally strong months have been weak this year, but it appears to have been a pattern of delayed rather than lost sales, with vendors in Europe and the United States mostly telling me that sales so far this year (to mid-June) are up on the same period of 2012. It has to be said that performance, bolt-on and servicing/tuning remain the bread and butter as the market continues to fall back on staples rather than heavy duty industrial grade customization. ndeed, that pattern has been massively self-evident in the trends seen at custom bike shows on both sides of the Atlantic in the past 24 months, and not least at the recent 10th annual AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building at the Big Bike Europe expo a few weeks ago. The trend towards ‘garagebuilds’ had already been well set ever since ground-up chrome and paint fest builds peaked in 2005 and 2006. The widespread diversification of custom platforms has reflected the new reality of price-point change that custom bike builders are having to respond to. In Europe, the days when customer-ordered custom builds hovered around the Harley CVO price point and north from there have been replaced by price points between 15,000 € and 30,000 € with interesting implications. With concerns about the market’s demographics re-emerging (despite HarleyDavidson’s continuing success in building youth rider market share without radically refined metal), some solace can be derived from a new price point realism as it allows twenty and thirty-somethings to engage in a way that was either previously prohibitive or finance dependent. As we saw at Essen in May, one of the interesting side-effects of this trend is
S
that while current generation custom builds are less blinged-out than was previously the case, ingenuity and craftsmanship is being stimulated by a Darwinian "survival of the affordable effect". Builders are having to be cleverer and smarter and develop less expensive but nonetheless motivating and inspiring ideas that allow shallower pockets to still aspire to individuality and great design and engineering. The umbilical cord that used to connect parts and accessory catalogs to custom bike show winners is therefore being stretched thin, but on the upside custom builders are providing a pathway for new entrants at a time when downturn logic would make that tough. n the long term this can only be good for parts and accessory designers and manufacturers. The value of late model and used motorcycle buyers to the aftermarket has always been based upon this entry price point. Harley-Davidson’s success in ring-fencing bling-based aftermarket builds with the development of a CVO program that lives in the $30-40,000 range forced aftermarket custom bike builders to reach for chopped down, sparsely designed bobber entry points at around half the cost. The benefit of hindsight now shows us that that was always destined to fail once credit dried up, but what we are now seeing in the custom build market is a resetting of the rules in such a way that riders, still with some twenty to thirty years of increasing buying power and deepening engagement, will replace the lower median percentiles of the demographic bell curve that would otherwise be lost. That is not to say that five, ten or fifteen years from now we are going to see a re-emergence of the same bubble that burst so spectacularly on us six years ago, but it does point to there still being life in the desire of consumers to own motorcycles of character. High-mileage riding accessories, performance and tuning products, service and workshop revenues and bolt-on parts and accessories will be the beneficiaries in the long-term, but don’t expect cause and effect to look or be the same as it was in the pre-Lehman decade.

Polaris profit up despite Victory sales being down OLARIS Industries has reported record first quarter net income of $75.5 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2013. By comparison, 2012 first quarter net income was $60.1 million. Net sales for the first quarter 2013 totaled $745.9 million, which represents an increase of 11 percent from last year’s first quarter sales of $673.8 million. “We are pleased that consumers and enthusiasts around the world continued to make Polaris their brand and product of choice during the first quarter of 2013. While Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs) and motorcycles faced challenging 2012 comparisons, we were again able to outpace the industry and increase market share in both product lines,” said Scott Wine, Polaris’ Chairman and CEO. “Two key tenets of Polaris’ longterm strategy are growing globally and growing through adjacencies. Our acquisition earlier this month of Aixam Mega S.A.S., a profitable European onroad quadricycle business, aligns perfectly with those two objectives and furthers our penetration into the $4+ billion global small vehicles market. Aixam Mega broadens our product line portfolio, complements our GEM and Goupil businesses, boosts our European distribution network, and enhances our competitive advantage in small vehicles. Additionally, we finalized the location of our new European manufacturing facility, which will be located in Opole, Poland. This facility will add much needed ORV capacity and serve our European markets with locally designed and manufactured products. We expect to break ground during this year’s second quarter and the facility should be operational by
P
the Fall of 2014.” Wine concluded: “Not unexpectedly, we saw a degree of timidity in some customer segments that corresponded with the payroll tax increases that took effect at the start of the year. We remain cautious of the economic risks in both North America and Europe, but believe our strong team and commercial plans, along with our near term product pipeline, headed by the new Indian motorcycle, will enhance growth in the second half of 2013. With our solid start to the year, we feel confident in raising our 2013 full year sales and earnings guidance.” On-Road Vehicle sales, comprised primarily of Victory motorcycles, but also including Indian motorcycles and GEM and Goupil electric vehicles, decreased three percent from the first quarter 2012 to $62.9 million. North American industry heavyweight cruiser and touring motorcycle retail sales decreased about ten percent during the first quarter 2013 when compared to a strong mid-teens percent increase in the 2012 first quarter, which was primarily driven by the unseasonably warm weather in 2012 and a late start to Spring in 2013. ver the same period, Victory North American unit retail sales decreased as well, albeit less than the overall industry, resulting in continued market share gains. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Victory motorcycles, and to commemorate the occasion, Victory introduced a limited edition 15th anniversary Cross Country Tour, inspired by the first Victory motorcycle ever built. Additionally, as Polaris moves towards the full re-launch of Indian motorcycles later this year, the Company unveiled the all new Thunder Stroke 111 engine that will

power the new model year 2014 Indian motorcycles. The engine features 111ci displacement and delivers the raw power and iconic styling that have long been hallmarks of the legendary Indian Motorcycle brand. The Company’s small vehicle business grew sales double digits percent during the 2013 first quarter through added distribution and improved sales efforts for GEM and Goupil electric vehicles. ross profit was 29 percent of sales for the first quarter of 2013, an increase of 10 basis points from the first quarter of 2012; while over the same period, gross profit dollars increased eleven percent to $216.6 million. The first quarter 2013 increase in gross profit dollars and margin percentage was driven by lower commodity costs, higher selling prices and production efficiencies, largely offset by unfavorable currency movements and higher promotional activities. Operating expenses for first quarter 2013 grew 13 percent to $124.8 million or 16.7 percent of sales, compared to $110.6 million or 16.4 percent of sales for the first quarter of 2012. dollars and as a percent of sales for the first quarter of 2013 rose primarily due to planned strategic investments, higher sales, marketing and advertising expenses primarily related to Indian motorcycles, and increased research and development activities related to new products under development. et cash provided by operating activities was $47.8 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2013 compared to net cash used for operating activities of $0.7 million for the first quarter of 2012. The quarter over quarter change in net cash from operating activities is the result of higher net income for the quarter and decreased working capital requirements during the 2013 first quarter period primarily due to increased accounts payable. Total debt at the end of the first quarter 2013 was $106.4 million. During the 2013 first quarter, the Company increased its quarterly dividend payment for the 18th consecutive year by 14 percent to $0.42 per share and paid a total of $28.7 million in dividends to shareholders.

Wandell named Powersports’ Business Executive of the Year KEITH Wandell, who took on the role of Harley-Davidson CEO in 2009, has been named by Powersports Business as its ‘Executive of the Year’ for 2013. During his time in the position of CEO, Wandell has overseen a restructuring of the manufacturing process and production across the business and guided the company towards targeting a non-traditional demographic. As a result of the changes he has spearheaded the Company’s increased income in each of the past three years and grow retail sales and motorcycle revenues in 2011 and 2012. In October 2009, just five months after Wandell took on the CEO role, the Company discontinued the Buell motorcycle line, laying off 80 hourly and 100 salaried employees. At the same time, the company also moved to sell MV Agusta, which had been purchased less than a year before Wandell joined the business. “The Harley-Davidson brand is absolutely the most important thing that we have in our company, and everything that we do has to be delivered in a way that’s true to that brand, that keeps the legacy living on, and the legacy is really all about personal freedom. It’s all about people having the ability to express their own personal freedom through how they dress and how they customize their bikes and how they get together at
these rallies and interact with one another,” said Wandell in an interview with Powersports Business. Focusing on the core brand was not the only significant change that Wandell brought about following his appointment. When analyzing Harley’s former year-long level-load production, Wandell drew on his previous two decades of managerial experience at Johnson Controls, a global manufacturer of automotive, power and building solutions. Explaining how he introduced a restructured seasonal demand manufacturing process, Wandell said: “I felt that it was very, very important that we implement a more flexible manufacturing process, so that we could manufacture bikes closer to when the demand was going to be there. In that way, we wouldn’t be loading our dealers up with inventory during slow periods of time and then having shortages, if you will, during busy periods of time.” “We’ve had to go through what we call a major transformation in how we design and develop products and how we manufacture, and it created a lot of change in people’s lives. It was difficult for a lot of people, and you never like to see that happen, but at the same time, you know it has to happen. It’s the right thing, so you just fight through it. But it’s certainly been very challenging,” Wandell concluded.
Baird Dealer Survey OR its latest survey of Harley-Davidson dealer trends, Robert W. Baird & Co. surveyed a total of 62 dealerships, with the selection covering the US, Canada, Switzerland, Austria, UAE and Czech Republic. As part of its survey Baird looked at the level of consumer recovery in the motorcycle market, and it did this by comparing unemployment rates with consumer confidence. Following a record level of unemployment in January 2010, when it reached 10 percent, it has now fallen to eight percent. These changes have been reflected in the consumer confidence index that has risen from 60 points to 70 points over the same period of time. The effect of these changes can be seen in the percentage change of annual on-highway industry retail units growth. In 2009 the figure reached a record -40 percent, and that has now changed to two percent growth in 2012. Baird’s survey results also show that the Motor Company’s retail sales are improving both domestically and internationally since a record low in 2010. It is not only the new HarleyDavidson market that is showing signs of recovery, as used motorcycle values
F
are also showing continued increases. As of May 2013, the used value of the latest three year models from HarleyDavidson was 97 percent of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. However, despite the economic improvements, many dealers have reported customer traffic number and new bike retail sales as being below expectations and the issue being the unseasonal weather, with reports of heavier than average rain fall and lower temperatures negatively affecting the beginning of the riding season. s a direct result of the poor weather, US dealers who completed the Baird survey reported nearly flat sales of new motorcycles at the beginning of the second quarter and sales of used machines down nine percent. Among international dealers who completed the survey Canadian dealers
A
report a fall of three to five percent on year-on-year sales figures for new models, with used being down almost 15 percent. In other international markets new bikes sales were much more positive with sales up almost 10 percent. However, used bike sales were short and were reported as being down over 10 percent. When asked for their thoughts on the reasons behind the slow start to the sales season, dealer responses included: “Cold weather has held back sales,” and “Traffic is down 2,700 door swings. The weather has been cold and rainy.” However, other dealers who responded to the Baird survey had a more positive view of effects of the weather, saying: “Rainy weather, but not slowing sales, selling 300 percent more rain suits,” and “As soon as it stopped snowing in May, our traffic and our sales went through the roof. Business is booming and doesn’t appear to be slowing down. 2013 looks bright.” In the survey, the majority of
respondents (79 percent) said the inventory levels were about right (51 percent) or too low (28 percent), which is a reflection of the changes made at the Motor Company to how it manufactures new machines at its York facility with the introduction of surge production. The strategy is intended to use flexible capacity to surge production ahead of peak retail season to have the right bikes in the right place at the right time. Baird suggests that on average dealerships had 56 bikes at the end of the first quarter compared to 45 at the same time last year. ndeed in response to the production and resulting inventory changes dealers’ comments included good and bad feedback, ranging from: “Inventory too high due to lack of traffic,” and “The new inventory allocation is getting better – more new [units] for customers to choose from early in the year.” The Baird survey concluded with questioning dealers on how the factory’s promotions have influenced showroom traffic and sales. The responses were generally less than positive. “The Motor Company’s promotions remain unfocussed and uncompetitive.” “What promotions? The 110th Anniversary is in Milwaukee and nothing is done to build traffic to dealers. The marketing geniuses should be ashamed.”

which will be held during the upcoming tour of the Progressive International Motorcycle Shows over fall and winter. “Those participants may not know about the Custom Bike Show, which travels to 12 cities across the country, or the purse prize that comes with it. We’re looking to raise the caliber of builders in the program, and celebrate the passion, the artistry and the craftsmanship that goes into creating those works of art,” stated Harris. Bob Kay of Biker Pros, which will be organizing the show, said: “I’m thrilled that the international motorcycle shows have expanded the production of the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show this inaugural year in Sturgis. The
competition there will offer trophies, prizes and cash awards for winners of the Freestyle, Radical Bagger, Modified Harley, Retro Mod and Non-Harley Modified Street Bike categories.” The competition is sponsored by J&P Cycles, and Zach Parham, the company’s General Manager, said: “We’re happy to partner with IMS to bring the custom bike show to Sturgis, where a large percentage of our core audience is. It’s a unique opportunity for any business to be able to provide this type of full-service showcase of outrageous custom bikes for enthusiasts to view during one of the premier events of our industry. We’re simply thrilled to take part.” www.bikerpros.com www.AMDchampionship.com

AMD Magazine presents the second part of its review of the recent first annual Big Bike Europe expo at Essen, Germany, (May 10th -12th 2013) with a focus on what visitors, exhibitors and AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building customizers thought about the event
Industry veteran Bob Kay (right), seen here on stage with Bert Baker, ran a series of brand tech sessions for dealers and customizers on the Sunday at this year’s Big Bike Europe. The program was well received so 2014 will feature a full three day schedule of vendor presentations and dealer tech sessions
AIRHAWK: Scott Parman, European Sales Manager: “I go along with all those who are saying that while the overall number of show visitors was low, the quality was high and it has been a great start. I’ve had some great meetings and I’m very happy with the investment - for sure I want to exhibit again next year.” www.airhawk.net
FEULING PARTS: Luke Leatherman and the Feuling Parts team have done an extraordinary job in developing a broad-based performance parts program since starting out with the late Jim Feuling’s legendary W3 three-cylinder engine design derived oil pump design a decade ago. The Feuling Parts program now also includes Beehive valve springs, Reaper brand cams, 7075 heat-treated camplates, hydraulic roller lifter designs, complete camchest and oiling system kits, including coolers and offset oil filter adapters; www.feulingparts.com

DNA SPECIALTY: Alex Marquez, International Sales Manager for the Californian wheel, front-end and chassis manufacturer said: “Having the show in May is not a great month, it is too late in the European season I’d suggest March or early April would be better. A huge marketing campaign aimed at dealers is needed, as the show seemed to look more of a bike competition rather than an actual trade event - the floor-plan needs to be re-arranged”; www.trydna.com
TECMATE INTERNATIONAL: Martin Human, Managing Director of the market-leading battery charging, maintenance and diagnostics specialist said “arranging such a show is really hard work, so I applaud the team’s efforts in making it easy for exhibitors. The v-twin industry is a very promising sector of the market for us as it is demanding in terms of battery requirements. We did meet some interesting people, but those who build one-off customs are not really our market. The customers who were interested in our products were in fact more mainstream people who were mostly invited to the show. Clearly work now needs to be done on building that attendance in the future.”; www.tecmate-int.com www.AMDchampionship.com
S&S CYCLE: Speaking for the famous Viola, Wisconsin based manufacturer, ahead of their 55th anniversary, Marketing Director Pete Amenda said: “I was very encouraged by what we experienced during the first ever Big Bike Europe event. The organizers created a venue where S&S could meet directly with many of our European dealers and distributors, share information about new products and services, and get feedback on the market and opportunities for us to grow our business. The format will continue to evolve, and the value for the dealer community will continue to grow. I think this event has the potential to become the premier trade event in the region for the V-twin and custom bike industry.” www.sscycle.com
MONG the dozens, indeed hundreds of comments and reactions that we received during the show in May, the single most common theme was that, in the European context especially, the event was very “different” to anything seen before. In that reaction alone, we here at AMD see complete validation of the concept and delivery of the primary aims and objectives of the project.

By way of a recap, those aims and objectives were to create a business oriented ‘Pro-Grade’ expo environment that focused exclusively on the motorcycle parts, accessory, custom and performance industry, and did so in such a way that the wonderful subject matter of our market looked truly “inspirational, motivational and aspirational”. It sounds like such a simple proposition, but incredible though it seems, there has
KLOCK WERKS, USA: Brian Klock, owner: “We were very excited to get involved in this first year, and I think that the concept is definitely proven. There is a real need for an expo like this, and there is no question that Robin Bradley and AMD can and will deliver. We would very much like to be a part of it again next year and look forward to helping build it into the major expo it is going to become.” www.kustomcycles.com

JIMS USA: For the Californian engines, parts and tools specialist, Paul Platts said: “As an American manufacturer, it’s difficult to exhibit overseas. Most shows are either a retail environment or customer-specific. The idea of a professional trade show, similar to the Cincinnati V-Twin Expo, in a central European location is ideal. Big Bike Europe’s first attempt at this was on target. Compounded with the Custom Bike Building Championship ~ the potential for this show is big. In a nutshell, the concept and presentation was good, now we need the dealers and enthusiasts to attend and support it! I know for a fact that without this, no show will survive. Robin & AMD have done a great job building the championship over the past 10 years, I trust they will do the same with Big Bike Europe.”; www.jimsusa.com

PAASCHBURG & WUNDERLICH: Dieter Klann, Sales and Marketing Director: - “It was always going to be tough to start such an ambitious new project in the current market, and we are disappointed in the attendance. But it was a first year, and for me the overall concept remains valid. Provided there are clear strategies in place to grow the attendance for next year, then for sure we will look at exhibiting again.” www.pwonline.de

never been an international expo in Europe with that focus and those objectives. hilst there are important events in an already crowded international expo calendar, most of which have quite legitimately earned their place in the market cycle, they are either largely regional or national in nature, or they are broad-based OE dominated trade association shows such as INTERMOT and EICMA. The regional and national custom shows are dominated by a dealer/custom shop exhibitor community that is seeking to
engage with local consumers in a primarily retail environment. The broad-based OE dominated trade association owned shows also have an altogether different and also perfectly legitimate focus – one that seeks to develop participation in the Powered Two Wheeler (PTW) industry in general and do so primarily in the context of the business needs of the major motorcycle manufacturers. However, with workshop and parts department >>> revenue firmly center stage as the primary

mechanisms by which authorized dealers and independent shops are able to continue trading, an expo that throws the spotlight on the business needs of this important sector is now also perfectly legitimate, but therefore dramatically “different”. Even though those who spotted these “hallmarks of difference” may have initially struggled to articulate those differences in detail, and it is perfectly clear from the word of mouth, online and social media feedback in the weeks following Big Bike Europe that the message is being understood. Indeed, among those (dealers and consumers) who are responsible for the majority of those workshop and parts department revenues, those at whom the show is primarily aimed, the message and its differences are
being welcomed. As we said last month, the primary objective now is to build on the start point that the industry has given itself by further developing expo content and attendance. Latest selection of parts from Drag Specialties DRAG Specialties describes its Wasp style narrow gas tank as having a vintage look. Available in single or dual cap versions, the tank is constructed from steel stampings and holds 2.2 gallons of fuel. The tank uses 73-81 style cam lock caps, and on the dualcap version, the left filler is non-functional. Included with the tank, which measures 17.75in long x 9in wide x 9in deep, is a set of universal brackets. The tank also features a right side 3⁄8in NPT and left side 1⁄4in NPT petcock bung. The chrome outer primary cover from Drag Specialties is a direct replacement for the OEM part on ‘07-‘13 Softails. Made from die-cast aluminum, the cover has the starter shaft bush included, but seals and other components must be ordered separately to complete installation. Drag Specialties claims its OEM style saddlebag lids are stronger, easier to paint and hold their shape better than the parts they replace. This is despite the Drag lids being made from same material as OEM lids and having the exact same dimensions. The Drag Specialties lids accept all OEM or aftermarket hardware, latches, tethers, etc.
Another new part available is the company’s frame-mount spring solo seat mount kit. It has been designed for installing large and small spring solo seats and made especially for ‘04-’06 and ‘10-‘13 XL models. The kit will also fit ‘07-‘09 XL models if ECM is relocated from fender and seat area (the kit does not provide relocation instructions or materials). The mount is black powder-coated, while the steel spring mount studs are stainless steel, and all other hardware is zinc-coated. It includes all hardware with 3in chrome springs, leather frame cover and installation instructions. Scissor-type springs can be used with this kit and are sold separately.

Black Satin brake rotors WILWOOD’S E-coated Black Satin motorcycle brake rotors are claimed to provide superior corrosion resistance and uninhibited pad bedding when compared to conventional zinc or metallic based electrocoated discs. The Satin process provides a protection layer said to seal the microscopic surface of the base metal structure, providing more consistent color and thorough protection of all surfaces where zinc based electro-finishing can sometimes fall short. REVO coil Suspensions LEGEND Suspensions, previously known for its air suspension systems, has now made the move to producing a coil sprung suspension line. The new Revo coil suspension uses Legend’s touring spring rates to produce what the company states is a superior ride quality and performance designed specifically for all FL touring models. The unique spring rates produced in extended lengths provide a larger sweet spot with minimal pre-load adjustment. Carrying a passenger or changing between different riders’ weights and loads couldn’t be easier. Rider weights can increase or decrease by 50 percent or more without adjusting pre-load, while offering a superior ride quality. If pre-load adjustment is needed it can be adjusted by hand. The Legend REVO is machined from 6061 Series aluminum, which is then hard coat anodized. Internals are tuned via ‘Deflective Disc Valve Damping’ on top of Legend’s new high-flow piston and low-friction seals. This combination is said to react quickly to road conditions with improved fluid control while self-adjusting to road frequency, ensuring controlled performance without losing plush ride quality. Legend is offering the REVO in 13in and 12in
lengths fitting 2000 and later Harley-Davidson FL and FL LO PRO models. All REVO models are available in standard or heavy-duty applications. LEGEND SUSPENSIONS Sturgis, South Dakota, USA Tel: 605 720 4202 sales@legendsuspensions.com www.legendsuspensions.com

The Taiwanese sharp shooter The World Championship of Custom Bike Building moving from Sturgis to Germany was welcomed by many European bike builders as it meant it would be easier for them to compete in the event. However, for one builder Europe was just as hard to get to as the US, the reason being that Winston Yeh, of Rough Crafts, is based in Taiwan. However, distance was not going to put him off competing, nor for that matter taking a trophy home! OW in its 10th year, the World Championship of Custom Bike Building has always had an international flavor. That is one of the many factors that remained unchanged after the competition was staged in Europe for the first time when it was held in Essen, Germany, as part of Big Bike Europe, with competitors from 23 countries present. Among those competitors was one young man making history at the Championship. His name was Winston Yeh, and he was the first Taiwanese competitor in the World Championship of Custom Bike Building with his Modified Harley Sportster – Stealth Bullet. Winston is the proprietor of Rough Crafts, a small custom shop in Taipei City, but he has a long background in the custom bike industry, and when he was first starting out seven years ago he spent time working at Roland Sands Design as a graphic designer. So impressed was Roland Sands with Winston’s work that when he left to return to Taiwan he gave him a set of RSD wheels as a thank you. It was this very same set of wheels that set in motion the build of the bike Winston entered in the Modified Harley class at the 2013 World Championship, and then ultimately took first place in the class, too. Of course, Winston needed more than a set of wheels to start the build, and as a donor bike he sourced a 2008 1200R Sportster. As soon as it was in the Rough Crafts shop Winston began the strip down. The bike was completely disassembled to allow for the first of the many subtle but significant changes – converting it to run oil-in-frame. Winston’s reason for doing this was to be able to rid the bike of its bulky side panels, and as part of the work he placed the oil lines along the top of the frame, so that they are then hidden by the gas tank. The next step in visually slimming the bike was to then relocate or modify the battery, and Winston took the former option. His solution to getting a battery to fit into the now limited space

below the bike’s seat was to get a custom made Lithium lon battery made based on a collection of A123 Nano cells. inston then moved on to mounting the RSD wheels to the bike, but obviously the stock mounting points would have to go. At the rear a custom swingarm was machined from billet aluminum with an Exile Cycles sprocket brake caliper mounted to the inside. The disc, which the caliper works on, was sourced from the Performance

The stock gas tank was heavily reworked before being painted by Air Runner Custom Paint to look as though it has been made of carbon fiber
to put it into production. When it does go into production it will be available for all ’04 onward Sportsters and will feature all the brass bushing pressed and re-bored to the proper dimension. On the opposing side of the engine Winston has used an Evolution Industries’ open belt 2in primary drive, which he has modified to suit the look of the Stealth Bullet. Meanwhile back on the drive side the final drive has been converted from belt to chain. The finishing touch on the engine is the custom push rod collars. They were made from solid silver by 2 Abnormal Sides and designed to match the custom silver badge they also made for the bike’s head tube. he silver theme is carried through on the finish to the bodywork. After extensively modifying the stock tank and building a custom seat/tail unit, Winston had the body work wrapped with carbon fibre sheet, which was then given a coat of clear lacquer before the detail lines, silver leaf logo, and shading were added. All of the wrapping and paint work was handled by Air Runner Custom Paint Studio. Finishing touches on Stealth Bullet are the rider contact points, with both the bars mounted below the upper tree, and the rear sets being hand-made in the Rough Crafts shop. Over the course of the World Championship there was a constant stream of people stopping to take the time to carefully look over Stealth Bullet, taking in all the exceptional detail. It was the level of detail that caught the attention of Winston’s fellow competitors, who when it came to judging, placed Stealth Bullet in first place in the Modified Harley class.
T
The girder fork was completely designed and machined in-house by Winston
Machine catalog to match the RSD wheel. ore CNC work was undertaken at the front of the bike, with Winston being responsible for the design and machining of the girder style fork. In order to reduce the weight of the fork as much as possible the inner sides have been heavily machined, with the left leg having a further recess machined into it to carry the Performance Machine caliper. With the rolling chassis complete, Winston then turned his attention to the bike’s drivetrain. Due to the prohibitive cost of running a large bike in his home country he has kept change to the engine simply cosmetic. Much of the work that has been done involves showcasing parts from the Rough Crafts product line or prototype parts. Among the production parts there are the billet aluminum velocity stack and rocker box covers. The cam cover is a prototype piece, but Winston expects to be able

Twin Club MC Custom Bike Show Norrtällje, Sweden, June 1st 2013 AFTER the atrocious weather of last year hit bike entry numbers and attendance, normal service was resumed for the 39th annual Custom Bike Show held in Norrtällje’s Societetsparken, with 220 bikes entered in 7 classes and almost 8,000 visitors from around Europe. This year was the ninth time that Custom Bike Show has been affiliated to the AMD World Championship. Three separate judging systems are used to determine the winners, with a jury of industry professionals deciding on three World Championship affiliate prizes and Best in Show, with the competitors deciding the class prizes, and a Public Choice winner being awarded a RevTech engine courtesy of Custom Chrome Europe. Finland has traditionally provided a large number of winners over the years, and 2013 was no exception as Alpo Varis of Aliens MC took the Best in Show prize and also won the Harley-Davidson Chopper class with his superb example of Scandinavian chopper styling. Another Finn, Anssi Kantonen, was runner-up with “Spirit of Douglas”, a hand-crafted Old School racer highlighted by his innovative use of a BMW Boxer engine. In third place, and fresh from his 13th place finish in
Alpo Varis of Aliens MC, Finland, won Best in Show and an invitation to the 2014 World Championship
this year’s World Championship, was Carlos Stenson’s steampunk-themed “Moonshine Trickster”, based around
a 1923 boat engine. Having driven 7 hours overnight to compete after finally getting the bike running, Carlos also picked up the Public Choice award and was runner-up in the Custom class. All three winners gain automatic entry to the World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Essen, Germany, and a EURO 2,000 prize to be used against the expense of competing.

Our thanks, as always, to Twin Club MC for their meticulous organization, Custom Chrome Europe, Motorcycle Storehouse and W&W Cycles for their support of the event, and the City of Norrtällje authorities for their bikerfriendly attitude and use of the central park for the bike show. www.custombikeshow.se
