We are in the prime fishing season for south Florida, and I love it! We have had more yellowfin tuna this year than we have seen since the 1980s. These could continue through April. Sailfish will get very consistent as we are moving into their spawning season. Kite fishing will produce the most, but with well rigged baits, trolling can be productive. Along with the sailfish, we will see more and bigger black fun tuna, kingfish, bonito and hopefully some big mahi. On the wrecks we will see more cobia and amberjack. Inshore the tarpon are in full swing. The shrimp will get harder

to get, but the tarpon will start eating crabs to solve that problem. If you find some mullet, they bring the most exciting tarpon strikes when slow trolled. The pompano are best in March, but a few will come through in April. The same will hold true for Spanish mackerel. If we get some calm weather, go east! The swordfish should be really good, if it is calm enough to get out to 1500 feet of water and fish the daytime bite.

YOUTH FISHING TIPS

Several times a year my dad takes my sister (Gabie) and I fishing on one of the large fishing boats out of bayside marina. Our most recent trip I caught two fish on a Chicken Rig with Bonita strips. There must have been sharks on the bottom because the fish I caught were Remoras. To set up the Chicken Rig, first, release the line into the water, continue releasing the line until you

feel it slack. When the line slacks it means that the Chicken Rig has reached the bottom. Next, reel it up three times up off of the bottom. Lastly, wait until the fish bites. Several people on our boat caught Mutton Snappers, Yellow Tails, and Grunt. They were using jigs or the same Chicken Rig set up that I was. On the back of the boat we attempted to troll. We were using Penn boat rods and old Senator reels. One of the most well made and reliable reels of all time. On my second attempt trolling between stops I was using Ballyhoo. We all of a sudden heard the line being taken away by what must have been a huge fish, probably a Marlin or Sailfish, but by the time we yelled “fish on” it had taken about three-quarters of the spool. Sadly, this giant fish got away.

Niche Modern introduces the new Crystalline Series lighting collection featuring “Axia,” “Delinea,” “Calla and “Trove,” four handcrafted, glass-blown pendant designs. “Trove,” right, is a vibrant diamond silhouette that is inspired by a treasure chest filled with dazzling precious gems. 212/777-2101

thom filicia Celebrated interior designer Thom Filicia recently attended the 2014 Las Vegas Market, where he imparted his passion for creating modern, yet classic interiors. He is the author of three design books including his latest, American Beauty. Interior photography by Eric Piasecki. Published by Crown Publishing Group. 212/736-6454

IMAGE MAKER: Inspired by motion and speed, Roche Bobois’ versatile designer crafts dynamic, fluid pieces. Question: Were you always interested in furniture design? Answer: As a young boy I was fascinated by any object in motion. I began my career designing automobiles, motorbikes and scooters and it remains my passion today. For that reason, even my “static” products appear to move. My interest in furniture design developed later when by chance, I happened to meet Roche Bobois’ owner. Question: Who first influenced your career? Answer: My father was a fashion designer in Paris and he passed his love for creating down to me. He taught me how to master proportions and fluidity of shapes, to perfect proportions and to see elegance in design. I learned to pay attention to details and how to play with colors and textures. Question: How would you best describe your designs?

phyllis morris The hand-carved “Riviera Salon Chair” from Phyllis Morris is an ode to classic style and elegance with its gently sweeping back, cabriole front legs and decorative armrest. Shown in a white gold leaf finish and clad in polished-silk, the chair is available in a range of custom finishes and upholstery options. 310/289-6868

Answer: Timeless and sleek with strong velocity in mind. My Speed Up collection for Roche Bobois is pure and essential without ornamental details. My pieces have a very unique character — a clear definition of my aerodynamic style that is compatible with the notion of aesthetics and pleasure. Question: What do you enjoy most about your collaboration with Roche Bobois? Answer: They trust me completely, which is so important. We are in harmony and there is a strong and positive energy running between us. I have so much fun creating and developing new products with their very professional and passionate team.

rench designer Sacha Lakic, creator of the Speed Up collection for Roche Bobois, combines his love for speed and motion with functionality and aesthetics. Lakic, based in Luxembourg, Germany, turned an early passion for velocity and aerodynamics into a career in design, first in the auto industry, and then later in the furniture business. “Giving the impression of movement to a static product is a way to give it life,” he says. Lakic’s inspiration can come from anything — a unique material, new technology or even a movie. “My goal is to surprise ... to create products that are always more innovative, with a personality or even a soul of their own,” he says. “I always look forward and never back in the mirror.” Looking ahead, Lakic is proud to debut his Roche Bobois winter collection and an electric sports car for Venturi. “Days should be longer than 24-hours,” he says. After settling comfortably into their home, the owners soon recognized a need for additional guest space and asked Stinson to compose a guesthouse and pool area to accommodate friends and family from Europe staying for extended periods of time. Housed in the prestigious and modern Jade Ocean building this 2,400-square-foot condominium in Sunny Isles Beach, Fla., definitively talks the talk: a monochromatic white palette, uncomplicated lines and a celebration of stunning sea views. Partnering with David Charette, with whom Britto

works in tandem on each and every one of the firm’s projects, the pair undertook a minimal, though important, amount of construction. “Our main goal was to address the sense of entry in the foyer and how it opens into the living spaces,“ says Britto, who used a good deal of custom millwork to achieve continuity and cohesiveness throughout. “Conceptually, it feels a bit like a train ... long and narrow, and leading to the caboose — or in this case, the master bedroom.” The designers created a dialogue of materials, which flows like a well-structured sentence from the great room through the hallways, and is punctuated by the bedrooms.

The conversation begins to flow in the entry, where custom

millwork, high-gloss surfaces and stainless accents speak to the sense of easy modern luxury that defines the home. An organic, three-part fixture from Artimide dangles from above, while contemporary, cup-like counter stools are seen in the distance.

HOW SWEET IT IS International sensation Maria Sharapova delivers both on and off the court with some of the best tennis of her career and a new playful collection of candy.

TEXT BY KIM MOSLEY

T

Tennis phenom, Maria Sharapova became etched in the hearts of tennis fans around the

world when she won Wimbledon at the age of 17 and ranked No. 1 by age 18. Easily the tennis world’s glamour girl, one of the sport’s biggest draws and among the most recognizable sportswomen in the world, Maria’s ferocious forehand and fierce

determination have catapulted her to the top in earnings as well. Set to dominate early on, a serious right shoulder injury nearly wrecked Maria’s career. Strong family values took over as a 10-month long battle to recover ensued. “My parents are my core,” she says. “It was the perseverance that I learned from my family that helped me get back to the top of my game.” Today at 25, the beautiful Russian is once again ranked at the top having made it to the finals of the Australian Open and winning the French Open in 2012. Maria has now won all four Grand Slam tennis events and happily adds Olympic silver medalist to her resume. Having learned her lessons well, she recently withdrew from the Brisbane International 2013 due to a collarbone injury she did not want to aggravate in anticipation of the Australian Open. “At that point, I just didn’t want to jeopardize what I had gained in the off-season,” she says. “I decided I had to make a smart move.” And smart she is, as well as beautiful. An athlete, philanthropist and entrepreneur with a business empire that is firing on all cylinders, her face and name adorn many products ... but none as sweet as Sugarpova.4 PHOTO COURTESY OF DENTSU AMERICA

rent and Sharon Barash live among the arts of a world explored... An embroidered kimono from Japan, paintings from Israel, artifacts from Papua New Guinea, carvings from Ghana, bejeweled wall hangings from India, and sculptures from Burma are just a few pieces of their extensive collections, gathered during many trips abroad. As Brent explains his treasures, there is a recurring theme: “I had to have it.” He and Sharon easily showcase not only their passion for indigenous expression, but also their love of other cultures. It is not the travel itself, but the people they meet who inspire them to board another plane and visit yet another country. Since the early 1970s, the couple has traveled together — doing everything from meeting with village chiefs to floating down the Amazon River, holding an anaconda. Both have adventurous spirits, curious minds and unfailing senses of humor, which have enabled them to be openminded and accepting of whatever community they visit. “We’ve been to Africa 11 times. Africa gets in your blood — not the animals so much, but the people and getting into the villages,” Brent said. Added Sharon, “We stayed in a chief’s hut, living outside on an air mattress. Can you imagine Polo members sleeping on the ground?”

“Where ever we go, we don’t judge,” Brent said. “You take yourself from our world and go into their world and accept them as they are. They have something that we have lost — family. I admire them.

In August 2017, Brent and Sharon joined a prestigious group of people who have traveled to all seven continents and more than 100 sovereign nations. They received the 100 Nations Award from International Travel News, a monthly publication for high-frequency travelers who visit destinations outside of the U.S.

Brent and Sharon were awarded the 480th certificate in the 40 year history of the publication. To earn it, their passports include stamps from around the globe — Belize, El Salvador, Albania, Japan, Mongolia, Thailand, Nepal, New Zealand and more. They show no signs of slowing down. In October 2017, as they were being interviewed for TRENDS, they were preparing for two weeks through western and northern England, Bath, and Scotland. Even as their friends and neighbors express concern for their safety, in light of terrorist attacks and political unrest, the couple shrug off any dangers of international travel. “It’s more dangerous driving on I-95,” said Brent.

Stepping Outside the Golden Cocoon Although Brent refers to his beautiful South Florida community as the “golden cocoon,” when he and Sharon travel they seek an experience unlike one they can get at home. No luxurious cruises and very few five-star resorts for them. A two-time cancer survivor and stem cell recipent, Sharon said they’ve traveled through the “muck, dirt and dung,” but she talks with a smile on her face. “Why go on a boat, then get off for an hour and go to Bermuda? We live at Polo,” she explained.

FOR EVERYONE Proper body hydration is important whether you're running a marathon or a marathon of errands. A consistent intake of water throughout the day is the easiest way to start living a healthier lifestyle. Proper body hydration can lead to increased energy levels, it can support healthy body function, and can help increase the absorption of nutrients. Average sweat losses ranges from 1-1.5 liters per hour; however, is very dependent on (but not limited to) the individuals fitness level and environmental conditions. Sodium is the most abundant electrolyte lost via sweat; therefore, it’s important to consume sports drinks with higher amounts of sodium during the activity. Electrolytes are tiny particles that are electronically charged and are lost to some extent via sweat when exercising. Electrolytes play a key function in maintaining fluid balance, and supporting normal body function. Sodium and potassium are the two electrolytes needed at greater quantity, due to their important

roles in fluid retention and preventing muscle cramping respectively. Magnesium and calcium complete the electrolyte profile by aiding in muscle contractions and movement. Consuming an adequate amount of water throughout the day can help increase energy, and delay the onset of fatigue, it can keep your skin and hair healthy, it can help digest and absorb food faster. The institute of medicine (IOM) recommends the adult men intake about 3.4 liters per day, and the adult women intake 2.7 liters per day in order to maintain healthy body functions. Hyponatremia, a serious condition, in which blood sodium levels are significantly decreased, resorting in a negative balance within the internal na/k pump. This incidence can occur when an athlete consumes too much plain water. with over-hydrating with plain water you can flush out critical electrolyte stores that are needed for working muscles and normal body function. To avoid this situation, consume an electrolyte rich drink while exercising.

Island GRAND BAHAMA

PROFILE Island Magazine is a local, Grand Bahama-produced Visitor/Welcome magazine that is published twice a year. With its premier issue in the summer of 1996, Island magazine began to showcase stories that celebrate life in The Bahamas, with a special emphasis on the news, developments, artists, activities, businesses, history and cultural events that make up Grand Bahama’s unique island character and ongoing visitor appeal. Island magazine’s editorial philosophy can best be illustrated by the local flavour and the decidedly Grand Bahama point of view have made it a favourite among both visitors and local residents. The magazine has grown to an annual circulation of 160,000 copies, with an estimated readership of over 480,000 per year. Island magazine is available island-wide at area hotels, restaurants, resorts, shops, tour desks, and on board cruise ships calling on Freeport/Lucaya. The Publisher of Island Magazine is an experienced Bahama businessman, Greg Farrington, who owns and operates Freeport Advertising & Printing — a full service graphic design and printing company that celebrates its 27th anniversary in business this year.
