Welcome to Dean Close Prep School! We are delighted to host you for sports fixtures and look forward to a matches filled with spirited competition At Dean Close, we believe that sports are more than just a game - they are a powerful vehicle for personal growth and development While every team strives for success, it is the spirit of sportsmanship, respect, and teamwork that truly matters. We hope fixtures will not only challenge our pupils physically but also help them develop important life skills such as perseverance, resilience, and fair play. Please enjoy the day, respect every player, give your best, and celebrate the opportunities that sport brings

A Dean Close Welcome! Useful Information

Location: Our school is located on a 50 acre site between Hatherley Road and Shelburne Road, Cheltenham, although please refer to the site map on the opposite page to assist you in finding your way around our site, as there are different entrances for sporting events. Please do not use the main entrance for attending sporting events. (Bus drop off What3Words are; letter.burns.pilots)

Facilities: Our facilities include two large sports fields, a sports centre, astro pitches, tennis courts, netball courts, a sports hall, a swimming pool, changing rooms, etc. Please ensure you familiarise yourself with our facilities upon arrival.

Parking: Bus pick up and drop off is located along the school site section of Hatherley Road. There are limited parking spaces available on-site and free parking along Shelburne Road. Please refer to the site map for designated parking areas.

Onsite Medical Team: For any sporting injuries or medical assistance, we have an onsite medical team available. A member of the medical department will be covering the matches to provide immediate care if needed.

Match Tea: After the matches, a match tea is available for players in the Prep School Dining Hall and post-match refreshments are available for spectators in Centenary Hall (or on Wilton lawn if the weather permits) It's a perfect opportunity to unwind, socialise, and refuel after the exciting competitions

Spectator Toilets: Restroom facilities for spectators are conveniently located in the Sports Centre (see site map)

Parents please use Shelburne Road & Bacon Theatre car parking. Parents please only use Sports Centre toilets. PLEASE – NO DOGS ON THE PLAYING FIELDS.

Spectator and Parent Code of Conduct

Playing for the team, and for the team to win, is a fundamental part of the game, but not winning at any costs, because Fair Play and respect for all others in the game is equally important.

Parents and spectators have a great influence on children’s enjoyment and success in Sport. All children partake in sport because they first and foremost enjoy sport– it is fun. But, however good a child becomes at sport, it is important to remember that positive encouragement will contribute to:

Children enjoying sport.

A sense of personal achievement

High self – esteem.

Improving the child’s skills and techniques.

A parents and/or spectator’s expectations and attitudes have a significant bearing on a child’s attitude towards other players, match officials, managers and spectators.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

CHILDREN LEARN BEST BY EXAMPLE. SHOW RESPECT FOR OTHERS.

ENCOURAGE AND BE SUPPORTIVE. BE DIGNIFIED IN DEFEAT.

HONEST EFFORT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN VICTORY.

The Do’s & Don’t

All parents and spectators at Dean Close School sporting events are expected:

Not to use foul or abusive language in any circumstances

To always be positive and encouraging towards all players from both teams (not just their own child or the most talented), in a sensible and constructive manner

To avoid yelling at or ridiculing a child for making a mistake.

Kick Off Time

To remember that children take part in sport as part of their school curriculum and for their own enjoyment, not for your entertainment.

To show respect for the Match Officials.

To accept defeat sensibly and with dignity and to encourage the children to do the same

To accept the decisions and instructions of the Coach and other Team Officials – remember, they are volunteers who give up their time and resources to provide the opportunity for your children.

To abide by the Laws, rules and spirit of the chosen sport.

To support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from children’s sports matches and to promote this Code of Conduct amongst other Parents and Spectators
