DEAN CLOSE ST JOHN’S | PRE-PREPARATORY

Welcome

A VERY WARM WELCOME TO OUR WONDERFUL PRE‑PREP, WHERE THE MAGIC REALLY DOES HAPPEN The warmth, vibrancy and care of this very special part of Dean Close St John’s is evident to all and we think you will love being part of this special community. It is always a delight to welcome our new families and we hope you will soon get to know us. It is so exciting to have the children back in school every September ready to learn and make the most of all that is on offer. We have a wonderful team of dedicated and talented staff who provide outstanding pastoral care and academic challenge to each child. Being a small school means that relationships and really knowing one another is vital to ensuring each child is supported in the best possible way. Our school is a happy one – our values of love, courage and contribution underpin all we do. Pre-Prep is full of excitement every single day and we want to ensure those moments of awe and wonder form a central part of each child’s learning. We know that childhood is the most precious of days and we embrace the outdoors to ensure the experience of childhood at St John’s is the very best. Allowing the children to explore, experiment and make mistakes is so important – we aim to provide a learning environment where the children are supported, stretched and challenged. I do hope a new academic year brings with it all sorts of possibilities for your children and I look forward to an exciting journey together.

The School Day • ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL

Pre-Prep doors open at 8am with registration at 8.20am. Breakfast is served between 8am and 8.15am in the dining room if required.

• ASSEMBLY TIME

Pre-Prep enjoy their own assemblies as well as joining with the Prep School for whole school assemblies. St John’s encourages pupil participation and these collective events are seen as important – celebrating the new school day with stories, drama and thoughts, supporting our community life and school principles. Assemblies are also an important time to celebrate pupil awards and prizes for effort, attainment and for being a helpful, caring member of our school.

• BREAK TIMES

During the morning and afternoon break, children are supervised by teaching staff and can enjoy the Pre-Prep play area and adventure playground. We encourage children to play games that promote friendship and allow for individual respect. A drink and a snack are provided at this time. Your child may also bring fresh or dried fruit of their choice in for break time. We kindly request that the fruit is prepared ready to eat. It should be in a small, clearly-named container. Please remember that we are a strictly “no nuts and sesame” school.

• LUNCH TIME & NUTRITION

We follow a routine based around the children’s learning and developmental needs, offering a healthy and varied menu which includes vegetarian and vegan options. Our produce is high quality and sourced locally. Please let us know if your child has any dietary requirements so that we can cater for them. A cooked meal is provided in our school dining room between 12 noon and 1pm. We offer family dining and sit with the children to help them eat a balanced meal and learn good table manners.

The School Day • END OF THE DAY

Pre-Prep formally finish the school day at 3.30pm. We are aware that sometimes plans do have to change. If, for any reason, you will not be able to collect your child at the appointed time, or you have had to ask somebody else to collect them, please let your child’s form teacher know by email leave a message with the school office. This means we can reassure your child and, of course, we will not allow any child to go home with anyone other than a parent or nominated guardian without your permission.

• WRAPAROUND CARE

At St John’s we know that working parents may have additional care needs for their children beyond the set school day. With this in mind we are happy to provide the following, free of charge: 8.00am – 8.15am Breakfast in the Dining Hall 3.30pm – 4.15pm Pre-Prep Clubs 3.30pm – 5.30pm Late Stay with a member of Pre-Prep staff Drink and biscuit provided, with bus children escorted to their bus at 4.25pm. Children may join Late Stay after their Club if additional childcare is required. Those clubs that are run by external providers may incur a small fee. 5.30 pm – 6pm Late Stay continues in the Prep School and a cooked tea is provided if previously booked in. An additional charge will be added to the end‑of-term bill. Children await collection from the Prep-School. Please note there is no after-school care from 4.30pm on Exeats and 3.15pm at end of Half Term and end of Term.

• BUSES

The school runs a fleet of minibuses daily (Monday to Friday) to and from St John’s. The exact routes are dependent upon demand and vary from time to time. To find out further details and to book places on the buses, please contact School Reception. Our friendly drivers are all equipped with mobile phones and their contact numbers are provided on request. Please be patient when trying to contact a driver as they may be on the road and unable to take your call until it is safe for to pull off the road and bring the vehicle to a halt.

If you have any questions, concerns or simply need to get in touch about your child’s day, we are available on: Pre-Prep mobile 07471 350 704 (messages only please)

FOREST SCHOOL AND OUTDOOR LEARNING Dean Close St John’s has a rich variety of outdoor learning opportunities, both within the beautiful grounds, and throughout the stunning surroundings of the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean. Our children enjoy their on-site Forest School and superb outdoor classroom on a frequent basis. Here they have the freedom to learn through experimentation and discovery, learning about and connecting with the natural world. They also get to enjoy fun and adventurous activities – all of which are incredibly important to a real childhood.

HOLIDAYS & ABSENCES The School publishes an advance holiday date list and it would be appreciated if children were not taken on holiday during school time. Any request for leave of absence from school during term-time should be made in writing to the Headmaster. If children are taken out of school it means they are missing important lessons and assessments and, although every effort will be made to see that they have the necessary information from missed lessons, this is not a substitute for them being present. Requests for minor absences during the day for medical or dental appointments should be made directly to your child’s form tutor. If you have to take your child out of school during the day for any reason, it is essential that you sign out from the School Reception and sign back in when you return. It is vital that the School is notified of the reason for a child’s absence, as early as possible. Where the reason for a child’s absence is yet to be ascertained, the School Reception staff will endeavour to contact the home of the child. The School Reception staff will try to make contact before morning break.
