Jazz & Blues FESTIVAL 2013
A few words from the
Festival Director What originally started out as a small scale Jazz evening for the Senior School Jazz Band has grown into an event much larger than anticipated. I say this with great delight because I am thrilled that we have so much Jazz & Blues talent on our own doorstep, allowing us to house such an ambitious event. It is important to encourage and support our young musicians and what better way to do so than in this relaxed and fun atmosphere, where they can be immersed in some great music and be inspired by some great musicians. It’s fantastic that the whole Dean Close Community can come together for such an event and that all three schools can enjoy this breadth of talent. A big thank you to Dave Thompson and our technical crew who never fail
to rise to the challenge, no matter what I throw at them – although they might now run in the opposite direction when they see me coming next! Thanks must also go to Karen Coward for co-ordinating the stalls, the marketing team, especially Tracey Colbert-Smith for her great foresight and support throughout this event, and our Estates department for their help in setting up this event. I also want to thank all our musicians and their very patient teachers - the many hours of practise will be worth it!. Enjoy the music, the stalls, soak up the atmosphere and have a great time and remember, as George Gershwin said “Life is a lot like Jazz..... it’s better when you improvise”. Ciara Allen

Jazz & Blues FESTIVAL 2013
PROGRAMME OF EVENTS 1.45-2.30 Ladies Sing the Blues Dizzy’s Den Ella to Aretha, Etta James to Amy Winehouse. What better way to start the Festival than to showcase some of our top vocalists? Listen to these sultry performances in the relaxed, intimate atmosphere of Dizzy’s Den and get your afternoon of Jazz started off on the right note. 1.45-2.00 Combo Magic Basie’s Bar Come and listen to the Boys ‘conjour up’ some great sax sounds. This quartet of Sixth Form saxophonists know how to capture the laid back feel of the Blues and will feel right at home playing in Basie’s Bar. 1.45-2.15 DCPS Swing Band Duke’s Diner DCPS Swing Band is not a conventional swing band! With flutes and clarinets, alongside trumpets and saxes, they work on music especially arranged for them – Glenn Miller, Pachelbel’s Canon and a tune from CBeebies! Nowhere else in the world will you find a swing set like it! 2.00-2.30 It Takes 2 Basie’s Bar Husband and wife duo, Justin & Renny Slade, take us on a ‘Blues Cruise’ featuring many great Blues numbers from Skip James and Woodie Guthrie to the Rolling Stones.
Gershwin’s ‘I’ve got Rhythm’, or hypnotised by the haunting sounds of ‘Autumn Leaves’. 2.45-3.15 Close Harmony Basie’s Bar ‘Close Harmony’ is a pupil led mixed vocal group comprising students from the Fourth Form right through to the Upper Sixth. It was instigated by Oscar Osicki who wanted an opportunity for top singers to stretch themselves with the close harmonies and challenging rhythms that Jazz often provides. They have a wide repertoire of songs ranging from musical numbers such as ‘Under the Sea’ to the ever faithful Jazz standards such as ‘Blue Moon’. 3.15-4.00 Micro-Jazzers Dizzy’s Den They may be young for their years, but their enthusiasm is huge. ‘Micro-Jazzers’ showcases DCPS’s growing Jazz talent. From trumpet and sax solos to vocal numbers, the variety is huge and an entertaining afternoon is guaranteed. 3.15-3.45 Boozey Blues Basie’s Bar What better place to listen to some classic blues guitar than in Basie’s Bar? Join Sixth Former students from DCS as they capture the laid back feel of the Deep South with numbers such as ‘George’s Best’ and ‘Small Talk’.
2.15-3.05 Swung Duke’s Diner ‘Swung’ is a six-piece band made up of teachers from DCPS. They have great energy and enthusiasm (as their name suggests) and enjoy performing some great Jazz Standards such as ‘Fly me to the Moon’ and ‘Summertime’ but are also equally at home experimenting with more current covers such as Emeli Sande.
3.15-3.35 DCS Combo Duke’s Diner This young combo of Year 9 and 10 pupils have no fear when it comes to improvising. Although a fledgling group, their ‘have a go’ attitude produces some exciting and challenging solos and, best of all, no two performances will ever be the same! From the latin grooves of ‘Watermelon Man’ to the rock riffs of ‘Linus and Lucy’, variety is their forte.
2.30-3.15 The Piano Hour Dizzy’s Den This slot features some of DCS’s top Jazz pianists tinkling the ivories. Be dazzled by the virtuosic treatment of George
3.45-4.15 Jazzy Jules Basie’s Bar Flautist, singer, saxophonist - are there any limits to this lady’s talents? Join Julie Kent as she thrills her audience with

their unique performances of ‘George Jones’ and ‘Stand by me’.
3.45-4.20 Soul / R&B Hour Duke’s Diner It’s the return of ‘The Commitments’. Recreating the classic Soul/R&B sounds of Ottis Redding and Aretha Franklin, these Dean Close students will take you on a trip down memory lane with classic numbers such as ‘Mustang Sally’, ‘Try a Little Tenderness’ plus many more.
4.30-4.40 Dixieland Parade The Quad No Jazz Festival is complete without a taste of the authentic stuff. Dixieland, or Trad Jazz as it’s known, originated in New Orleans and is one of the earliest styles of Jazz music. The style combines earlier brass band marches, Ragtime and Blues within a polyphonic, improvised texture, but quite simply – it’s just great toe-tapping stuff.
4.00-4.15 DCPS Chamber Choir Dizzy’s Den DCPS Chamber Choir consists of some of the finest female singers in the Prep School, who have been especially selected to perform in this prestigious group. The choir enjoy their close harmony singing, occasional dance moves and are becoming real experts at ‘Doo-Wah’s’! & DCS Girls’ Vocal Ensemble This ensemble was instigated in September to cater for girls from the Senior School who want to sing songs of a lighter repertoire in two and three parts. It is made up of some very musical students, mostly from the Fourth Form (with one exception!) who have very strong views about the sorts of songs they like! They do like a challenge, however, and hope to entertain you with arrangements of some jazz songs they have been preparing especially for the festival. 4.30-5.00 Open Mic Dizzy’s Den Audience participation time. Provide a lead sheet and the band will provide the accompaniment. Don’t miss this opportunity to play with a top rhythm section. So shake the dust off that sax, test the vocal cords and come along and join the fun. 4.30-4.40 DCS Barbershop Basie’s Bar This unlikely group of DCS male teachers have been assembled especially for the Festival. Having received specialist training from vocal coach, Ben Sawyer, don’t miss

4.45-5.30 DCS Jazz Band Duke's Dinner This vibrant 20 piece band never fails to entertain. With their eclectic mix of Jazz standards, Blues and even a Latin Tango this band will definitely get audiences grooving. Watch out for their 'hot off the press' vocal arrangement of 'Skyfall'. 5.30-6.30 Ashok Gupta and Jonny Faull Duo Duke’s Diner What better way to conclude the Festival than to invite back ODs Ashok and Jonny. Having graduated from Leeds College of Music in 2011, Jonny is currently performing and teaching as a freelance saxophonist based in Leeds. As well as being heavily involved with the exciting jazz/funk scene in Leeds, Jonny is also regularly touring with the UK Rat Pack Vegas Spectacular Show in theatres nationally and abroad. Ashok has worked as an organist at Westminster Abbey, The Chapel Royal and St Paul’s Cathedral; as a repetiteur for Glyndebourne Opera, English National Opera and De Nederlandse Opera; and as a continuo player with the BBC Philharmonic, the Manchester Camerata and the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra. As well as having several BBC Radio 3 broadcasts in the bag, Ashok loves experimenting with Jazz and is thrilled to return to Dean Close for this Festival and to explore Jazz with fellow enthusiasts. They will be joined by Andy Rushton (Bass) and Jon Green (Drums) and will perform a selection of their favourite Jazz standards, inspired by legendary saxophonists such as Cannonball Adderley and Sonny Stitt.
