Cooking Up Spirit Energy The Desert Holistic Network –Unity Through Vision with Renee Baribeau By Eonn Skye “When I left corporate America I knew I had to do something to connect people,” said Renee Baribeau, “I had to go through a 9-month birth cycle before it came to me at 4:00 am in Cozumel while doing a workshop. I was a food and beverage director/chef here and in Colorado. Now I’m based here and traveling the world practicing my craft.” That was seven years ago. In 2006 seeds started to sprout for Baribeau who founded the Desert Holistic Network (DHN) to connect community and service providers of the alternative healing arts here in our desert region. “At first it was just me connecting people with the germ of the idea,” Baribeau said, “you have to identify where your community is, plant your gardens and simplify your life.” Baribeau was provided guidance and inspiration from Maria Teresa Valenzuela, an indigenous Indian elder from Mexico and a teacher and healer who was a representative at the Indigenous Congress of Elders in Mexico. Baribeau brought Valenzuela here several times and is planning the elder’s return in October. “I knew I was opening a doorway so others could walk through,” Baribeau said, “At first I thought someone else would run this center and that my role was just to give it birth.” Leadership at the DHN evolved for Baribeau who was very good at networking - creating a
newsletter and a website. She bought a home in 1999 on Fred Waring Drive near the College of the Desert and turned into a healing center. Baribeau enjoyed playing a pivotal role advancing wellness in the desert. “Back then, Urban Yoga was above the bank,” Baribeau said. “Kristin [Olsen] was really the first. Dancing in the Light held their first meetings at our Healing Center. Crystal Fantasy hadn’t yet started their classes. The community was really fragmented back then.” A big change came to DHN as it was evolving in 2008. Once other facilities opened Baribeau initiated a marketing campaign identifying the desert as another healing center, like Sedona, Arizona. “That was my vision,” Baribeau said. “We were next. I began calling all the businesses together for meetings to all come together to work as a group to make this happen. An example of unity is the connection with Angels Nature and Expression working together with Crystal Fantasy to drum together.” Not everyone choose to unite, with some preferring to work independently. Still, DHN membership, now over 100, has grown to also include service providers up in the Hi-Desert from Morongo Valley to Joshua Tree. “We’re growing and now going thru another revolution,” Baribeau said. “We recently sent out invitations to network with DHN; and over 250 page 8

Still No Signs
Redevelopment Leaves Downtown Empty by Dean Gray Desert Hot Springs, CA – Merchants still have no signs after the city spent millions in redevelopment agency funds rehabilitating an entire city block in the center of town. Two long-time merchants have been waiting for store signs now ten months after construction ended last year. It’s a circus that cost millions. High paid city planners and project managers created
false front storefronts on the buildings just for show. No new businesses have moved in to the city building and the interiors were left incomplete, some in ruinous condition. The city has a good explanation. “The city is not a good landlord,” said city manager Rick Daniels last year, while explaining the city’s intention to sell the building to the private sector. Daniels has been advancing a plan to trade the building to Palm Springs developer John Wessman in exchange for a vacant lot a mile away on Pierson Boulevard - but neither Daniels nor anyone on the city council is talking about that. Wessman has his hands full now persuading Palm Springs voters to approve a tax initiative to give him funding to revive the Palm Springs Fashion Mall, vacant for over a decade. Back in Desert Hot Springs the empty block of new-looking storefronts begs attention. Two long-time businesses remain in the mostly empty block in the empty heart of Desert Hot Springs at the
corner of Palm Drive and Pierson Boulevard. Dr. Paul Ross, the chiropractor and past president of the Chamber of Commerce, has maintained his office in the building for 31 years. Ten months ago Ross was promised by the city they would provide signage for his business. Ross is expected to pay for half the cost of the sign. “I’ve had my half of the money to pay for the sign waiting to go,” Ross said. “They left my old sign in the mud. I don’t know what’s wrong. The city doesn’t tell me anything.” Glossy, the women’s apparel store on the corner of Palm Drive and Pierson that has the strategic corner in the center of town for 28 years also has no signage. Playoffs, the sports bar on the same block owned by the city, got their sign at the first of the year. IN OTHER REDEVELOPMENT NEWS - After spending $17 million the city is now the largest property owner in the city, removing dozens of taxpaying properties from the tax rolls and bulldozing buildings into the ground. Redevelopment funds intended to consolidate small lots to
encourage private investment in the downtown core instead purchased vacant lots nowhere near the downtown core. To keep former Redevelopment Agency Director Rudy Acosta employed, he has been re-assigned as project manager supervising construction of the new Boys and Girls Club.

by Dean Gray Palm Springs, CA – A local attorney convicted for his role in a scheme in which large quantities of Serostim, an HIV drug, were illegally purchased from illegitimate sources and then illegally distributed to wholesale distributors for sale to HIV patients is set to be released from federal prison in two weeks. Robert McFadden who had offices in Palm Springs, California, was convicted in the scheme two years ago for his role in falsifying paperwork and funneling $2.6 million dollars through a client’s trust account. U.S. District Attorney Mark Irish said McFadden’s role was an attempt to provide “perfect cover” for the scheme. McFadden is also involved in a controversial purchase of a former Jewish temple building in Desert Hot Springs that was purchased by the city’s redevelopment agency. No charges were brought against McFadden in relation to that purchase. In the temple building purchase, McFad-

den represented the owner of the building, Rabbi Alon Barak, (former Baptist minister Steven Mesarch) and helped him avoid federal income taxes on the $1.4 million sale of the building to the city. Barak had purchased the building for just over $90,000 earlier. In subsequent years Barak sold the property to his son, Christopher Mesarch, who later resold it to Barak, jacking up the price each time. Barak had originally sought to sell the building to the city as a private individual, a transaction that was voted on and approved by the city council. Barak then discovered that transaction subjected him to capital gains taxes on the sale. McFadden helped Barak undo the purchase, transfer the title of the building into the name the congregation and then helped Barak negotiate to have the original purchase undone and the transaction redrawn to show the sale between the church and the city. A church is not subject to taxes in such a transaction. The city consented. The city then redrafted the documents. The city council rescinded

its earlier vote to purchase the building from Barak and then voted a second time to purchase the building, this time as a transaction between the city and the congregation. Barak and his son were the only members of the congregation. Before his conviction in the HIV medication scheme, McFadden, age 66, was a specialist in real estate law, was admitted to the bar in 1976 with a BA from USC and a law degree from Loyola Marymount University. A jury sitting in a New Hampshire U.S. District Court convicted McFadden of conspiracy to launder monetary instruments, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and conspiracy to engage in unlicensed wholesale distribution of prescription drugs. He was sentenced to three years of incarceration to be followed by two years of supervised release and ordered to pay $96,639.00 after receiving sentencing May 20. 2009. Attorney McFadden will be released from prison a free man in September. Barak relocated to Israel where he is reported to have purchased a hotel.

Walmart’s Secret Solicitor Your Phone Will Be Ringing Soon! By Dean Gray Desert Hot Springs– It is not easy to get lobbyists to open up for the press. Walmart’s lobbyists are the most secret of all. They are usually invisible, mostly unnoticed in the room. When we saw Chris Lucker of the Dolphin Group, we wanted to talk to him. We did. Part of a lobbyist’s job is to stay in the background. That is how they best gauge public opinion. That is how they ply their craft swaying public opinion in the favor of the businesses they represents. That is why Lucker remained quiet when a member of the general public asked, “Is there anyone from Walmart here?” Lucker does make himself known. Part of Lucker’s job is also stepping into local politics to “help” local elected officials. He never works for directly for them – local officials could not afford his services. His objective is to move an issue that he is being paid well to win. It’s what supports his Beverly Hills home and Wilshire Boulevard office. “I’m here to conduct phone surveys,” Lucker told us. He’s currently working on making sure a Wal-Mart is located in Desert Hot Springs. That objective will include phone surveys about
the upcoming November elections in Desert Hot Springs and Palm Springs for city council and water district board seats. The efforts are one in the same. Lucker answer to us was that he was only in town to work on local elections. It was a nonsensical explanation for those that know his business. What are you doing here Chris? “Hot, isn’t it?” Lucker evaded the question about his influence peddling. Although in his Beverly Hills attire Lucker looked out of place sitting in the audience at the Walmart meeting, few noticed him. In this a small town, a bedroom community to Palm Springs, most people don’t know each other. It was a room filled with working class people who populate Desert Hot Springs. Most don’t own a single pair of $100 shoes. Lucker’s cost more. Who looks at someone’s shoes? Lucker covets his anonymity, powerful and successful lobbyists work that way. They make deals and solve problems and earn big bucks getting things done. Like the August 9, 2011 meeting, no one will know when he starts phone polling that it is the Wal-Mart lobbyist calling. Lobbyists such as Lucker use telephone surveys in two ways. Some are “neutral polls” geared towards non-biased information gathering. A typical neutral poll might ask… “If you had a choice between voting for candidate A or B for mayor,
who would you choose?” Another form is known as the “push poll” using weighted questions. It is designed to sway public opinion. A typical push poll might ask… “Would you consider electing candidate B for mayor even though his wife is a convicted bank robber?” (see Bias is Back) Lucker’s job is not as easy as it used to be. As the public shifts away from land line use to using cell phones, the effectiveness of phone polling diminishes. Cell phones are rarely listed leaving numbers hidden from most pollsters. Lucker and other lobbyist are are finding new ways to harvest cell phone numbers; he will be calling soon. What you won’t hear when he calls is this. “Hi, my name is Chris Lucker and I’m calling from Beverley Hills about an issue in your city. I’m paid by Wal-Mart to influence local public officials and the public to makes sure a Walmart is located in your city. Can I ask you some questions?”

Living Longer The Seven Habits Of Very Successful People Habit Two – Begin With The End In Mind Since I am looking for ways to obtain increased health, wealth and happiness in the long life I am anticipating, I highly recommend Stephen R. Covey’s famous bestseller, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” In my opinion, incorporating these simple seven habits into your daily life will lead to the life success that most people would like to achieve. Habit One, which we reviewed in our last two columns, is Being Proactive, Not Reactive. In other words, don’t simply accept the circumstances that life creates for you. Always be aware that you can use any circumstances to your advantage by planning a suitable and unique response. Proactivity! Habit Two, “Begin With The End In Mind,” is based on the principle that all things are created twice. There’s a mental or first creation, and a physical or second creation to all things. This habit clarifies how to implement the process described by the word “proactive” in Habit One. To illustrate Habit Two, Covey says, “Take the construction of a home, for example. You create it in every detail before you ever hammer the first nail into place. You try to get a clear picture of what kind of house you want. If you want a family-centered home, you plan to put a family room where it would be a natural gathering place. You plan sliding doors and a patio for children to play outside. You work with ideas. You work with your mind until you get a clear image of what you want to build.” “Then you reduce it to a blueprint and develop construction plans. All of this is done before the earth is touched. If not, then in the second creation, the physical creation, you will have to make expensive changes that may double the cost of your home…” “Each day you go to the construction shed and pull out the blueprint to get marching orders for the day. You begin with the end in mind.” “For another example, look at a business. If you want to have a successful enterprise,
you clearly define what you’re trying to accomplish. You carefully think through the product or service you want to provide in terms of your market target, then you organize all the elements –financial, research and development, operations, marketing, personnel, physical facilities, and so on – to meet that objective.” “The extent to which you begin with the end in mind often determines whether or not you are able to create a successful enterprise. Most business failures begin in the first creation, with problems such as under-capitalization, misunderstanding of the market, or lack of a business plan.” “The same is true of parenting. If you want to raise responsible, self-disciplined children,
“Begin With The End In Mind,”
you have to keep that end clearly in mind as you interact with your children on a daily basis. You can’t behave toward them in ways that undermine their self-discipline or self-esteem.” “To varying degrees, people use this principle in many different areas of life. Before you go on a trip, you determine your destination and plan the best route. Before you plant a garden, you plan it out in your mind, possibly on paper. You create speeches on paper before you give them, you envision the landscaping in your yard before you landscape it, you design the clothes you make before you thread the needle…” “Put another way, Habit One says, ‘You are the creator.’ Habit Two is the first creation.” I recommend that you add this very useful book by Stephen R. Covey to your personal library so you can read it along with my necessarily brief comments in this column
for the next few weeks. Since this book sold over 10 million copies since its publication in 1989, there are many inexpensive used copies available at bookstores and on the internet plus copies available for free loan at your local public library. Meanwhile, those who can are encouraged to come to my Thursday night classes at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, 59700 29 Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, California, 7 to 9 pm. where we will continue this discussion of the Seven Habits. Please bring a three-ring notebook to class because we will also be learning a very special process to increase your motivation, the energy you draw on to accomplish your goals. The bulletin board at the entrance will provide information about the class location in the Meditation Building. There is no fee for the class but a donation of $5 is requested if you can afford it. I am considering holding a weekend workshop in the next few weeks where we will have enough time to learn a powerful technique for mastering the seven habits and totally changing our life for the better. If you are interested in a full Saturday-Sunday learning experience with me as your guide, phone me at 760-792-2032, my cell phone, or email artkunkin@gmail.com. Spirit Energy responded affirmatively. Nothing spiritual is an accidental thing.” “What was going on in the background was the creation of Holistic Helping Hands which will make DHN a very different Holistic Chamber of Commerce by offering virtual and administrative support such as graphics and web work to enhance visibility. The identification of a dedicated project coordinator will take our healing businesses to a higher level while doing so at an affordable rate.” Recently Baribeau was challenged on Facebook by some Native Americans who took offense for her charging money for her healing services. Baribeau replied with stoic confidence and sensitivity. “Money happens to be a form of energy that we use for exchange. I can’t pay the electric bill with trade or good feelings. A lot of our members trade for services. One way we show our support is to vote with our dollars. We build our presence by supporting each other financially and with energy. We wished we could pay our electric bill with barter but they take dollars. We do barter when we can, I support that when reasonable. For the cooking class I teach our farmer friend brings the food and in exchange I give her healing.” “For these years I invested everything I had - time, my residence, my energy - but had no revenue. Not every one knows this. Now 250 people found out and are paying it forward. Being a parent to DHN has not made me one cent in profit. I earn my money from cooking and shamanic
coaching through worldwide clients and travel ventures. No one really knows all this.” “Not a lot of people here know I am a healer. I’m more known here for my work in the kitchen. But I have clients in LA, and other countries that reach out for my healing services. My healing business has taken off that way. The network was never about money.” “I’d ask… Spirit? Why have I been sitting in the sweat lodge for 10 years? I came to realize it doesn’t matter. I had to wake up one day and say that’s what you meant, Spirit, the DHN is not mine literally, it’s not Renee’s group. Creating a legacy means letting go; that no matter what all the work is not in vain.” Some of Baribaeu’s journeys have been hard traveling all over the world. “Clients are making a big difference,” Baribeau said. My work and avocation lives on. We recently found young people right out of college interested in carrying who love the vision of the DHN and see the future in sustaining holistic businesses.” The Desert Holistic Network has recently upgraded the web site providing members special access. One of the major features is the calendar which is open to the public providing free listings of all associated events in the desert region. DHN is also now offering three levels of membership. Entry level is free and the two levels above provide more outreach services. “Over the years people who just wanted to take from the community fell away and caring people ‘hopped on board to take over.” A small group just spent a year envisioning the future of our Network” said Barbeau referring to new developments at DHN. “It needed change. I am just holding the kite string and long given up thinking it was all about me.” “Holding onto a vision about what it is - that is when it gets tripped up.” Baribeau said, “Positive energy shows itself in a new form when I give it breathing room. Working for Walmart Win
An Open Door for Beverly Hills Lobbyist By Dean Gray Desert Hot Springs, CA – When seventy five people met Wednesday, August 9 at the community center and were asked if anyone at the meeting was representing Walmart, Chris Lucker did not speak up. Sitting in the front row taking notes, Lucker is a seasoned pro preferring working behind the scenes at private meetings making the most of his presence. Lucker represents the Dolphin Group and maintains an office on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles and a home in Beverly Hills. His job is to move public opinion and sway politicians. He sat silently at the meeting where Desert Hot Springs residents voiced their concerns about a proposed Walmart store in their city. This reporter has had several encounters with Lucker. On this occasion Lucker was again wearing his signature attire, nattily dressed in the uniform of a sophisticated lobbyist – blue blazer, white shirt, khaki slacks and loafers, no socks. He had an odd explanation of his appearance at the meeting that discussed one thing only – the application of Walmart to build a super center in town. “I’m not here for Walmart,” said Lucker. “I
thought it was a city council meeting.” Lucker studiously filled a notebook with writings throughout the meeting. In a meeting with Lucker three years ago, he touted his record. “I’ve got a perfect winning streak. I’ve never lost a Walmart yet.” He bragged it was due to his influence that in eighteen cities he was instrumental in achieving victory for Walmart in overcoming public objections, business and environmental concerns and winning over public decision makers. That is the world of Lucker as a lobbyist, behind the scenes and not unlike other lobbyists pressing business interests. He may have sat silently at the meeting, ignoring the public’s question, but after the meeting he was considerably more vocal. Caught by our camera, Lucker spent 20 minutes talking to Desert Hot Springs Mayor Yvonne Parks. It was a friendly conversation, a meeting that ended with Lucker walking Parks to her Cadillac and holding the door open for her. The public does not know details of the Lucker and Parks discussion. The question is – was Parks also opening the door for the Walmart representative?

An eclectic look at movies new and old.
BEASTS & PRIESTS NEW HOME VIDEO TITLES DABBLE IN FEAR, FAITH, MYTH & MEANING ie was written and directed by André Øvredal. Although everyone, including André, is an unknown to US audiences, I understand the Otto Jespersen, the wonderful actor who plays the dour troll hunter, is a well-known satiric comedian in Norway. The creature effects are topnotch and I even felt kind of sorry for the fearsome, deformed, gigantic, dumb, mutant trolls who are the last of their mythic breed. Among the several extras including a director’s commentary, there’s an interesting but too brief but fascinating featurette that shows the steps and “wire frame” schematics required to insert the seamless lumbering, fearsome, pitiable, digital trolls into the action. Blu-ray. Magnolia.
TROLLHUNTER I was surprised and delighted with this excellent Norwegian riff on the “found footage” genre. This time we have all the clips from a student’s documentary on trolls put in chronologically order. Shot in verité style in the vein of films like CLOVERFIELD, TROLLHUNTER follows three persistent Norwegian film students as they travel to a remote mountain region in hopes of capturing a real-life troll on camera – a creature whose existence has been understandably covered up for decades by the local government. They claim there’s nothing to worry about – it’s just a problem with bears making trouble in the more remote and mountains and forests of Norway. Yes, there have been attacks. Local hunters and the film students’ don’t believe the disinformation and their determination pays off when they stalk a shadowy poacher and finally get him to agree to let them record his hunt, their encounters with the fearsome giants and the troll hunter’s heroics. This is the coolest monster movie I’ve seen in a long time. Having to read the English subtitles while listening to the Norwegian sound track only added to the verisimilitude. The beautiful cinematography makes ample use of strikingly beautiful, sometimes frozen, Norwegian locations. This entertaining and sometimes funny mov-
LÉON MORIN, PRIEST John-Pierre Melville’s 1961 exploration of the friction between faith and desire stars JohnPaul Belmondo in a cassock. There’s something very cool -- certainly intentional -- about Belmondo’s look that only further fuels the sexual tension he evokes among the women encounters on his life’s path. But there are many factors at work here beyond the repressed sexuality inherent in a vow of celibacy. Looming over everything are the shifting values of a post war France recovering from the war. There’s an aura of ambiguity and uncertainty in the world of this story, themes to which Melville would return and to which he was personally attracted. Belmondo’s priest is the spiritual guardian of a small French village during the Nazi occupation. He believes that anyone can be saved. So when he encounters Barny (Emmanuella Riva), a sexually frustrated widow and communist militant who barges into his church and tears his religion apart, he reacts with
compassion. Thus an unexpected relationship is begun that is the core of the film’s dramatic tensions and pleasures. A Jewish atheist, director Melville surprises us with a movie seemingly filled with religion. But a closer look reveals only the frightening distortions created between lonely people caught in prisons of their newly discovered existential freedom. Or, in other words, the paradoxical dilemma of the traps imposed by our free-will choices. Melville once glibly said the main idea of the film was none of the kind, but only to “show this amorous priest who likes to excite girls but doesn’t sleep with them.” But I think Melville knew better. One thing’s for sure: It’s impossible to imagine this film with a star other than Belmondo. His rumpled charisma and physicality, even in a liturgical frock, are astonishing. That face! Blu-ray. Criterion.
fine cast includes the always lithe and stunning Maggie Q, sonorously voiced and imposing Christopher Plummer and the semi-quirky Brad Dourif. Karl Urban seemed out of his element and in another film. But make no mistake, it’s Bettany as a ferocious sword of God that rules the day and makes the movie worth finding.
PRIEST OF LOVE Ian McKellan made his feature film debut in this sensitive 1981 biographical chronicle of the impassioned, infuriating life of D.H Lawrence. Janet Suzman, Ava Gardner and John Gielgud co-star. The clever, often understated direction of Christopher Miles works exceedingly well in creating an authentic feel of another time and place. Beautifully photographed, we follow the late writer’s life beginning in the summer of 1914, just before the First World War when D.H. married his German wife Frieda and moved to Cornwall, England. The slightly fictionalized life story examines the tumultuous pinnacle of the volatile author’s late career as he travPRIEST Director Scott Stewart’s horror-thriller takes els with Frieda to America, Mexico and finally place in a near future – or perhaps an alternative Italy, seeking a quiet place to complete his exworld. I liked this often uneven film; Priest’s faith was fascinating set against a corrupt world and a manipulative church. Just like the real world! YOU CAN SURVIVE
Vulcan The Angry God Part 1 By carol camELOT Since January 2011 Mt. Etna on the Italian island of Sicily has erupted five times, the most recent lava eruption being reported by Daily Mail Reporter on Jul. 11. Airports were closed due to the airborne ash, and large numbers of Sicilians reported their digital clocks, watches and computers were mysteriously running 15 minutes fast! It seems the god Vulcan has become agitated. Roman gods of Italy were pretty much copied from the Greek version, but given Latin names. The Greek god Hephaestus was known as Vulcan by ancient Italians, who believed he had rulership over arms, iron, jewelry, armor and the smithing of metals by fire. The Volcanalia festival honored him each August 23 with bonfires and animal sacrifices. Born to Jupiter and Juno, the king and queen, you would expect he would have been a gorgeous baby – alas, he was ugly with a red, bawling face. Juno was aghast and threw him off Mount Olympus; however, he was rescued by Thetis beneath the blue sea and raised amongst dolphins as her son. One day Vulcan found leftover coals from a fisherman’s fire and hid them in a clamshell. He experimented and discovered when bellows made the fire hotter, certain stones “sweated” gold, silver or iron which he fashioned into armor and jewelry. Years later Vulcan accepted Jupiter’s offer of Venus, goddess of love and beauty, to be his wife. Legend has it whenever Venus flirts with another man, Vulcan beats the red-hot metal so furiously it causes sparks and smoke to rise up from the top of Mt. Etna, under which Vulcan has his smithy. Infidelity sure has a way of making sparks fly. The myth of how volcanic eruptions occur helped ancient peoples to emotionally deal with natural phenomena of which they had no scientific understanding. As we all know, it always helps to blame someone else (“the gods are angry”) for what happens to you anyway, right? Scientists at the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia posted on their web-
site INGV Sezione di Catania a report on a major lava flow on Aug. 1, 2011 for one of Mt. Etna’s “cousins” called Stromboli. It is the first major event in several decades for that volcano. There must be a competition going on. Not to be outdone, Mt. Etna erupted five more times since Jul. 11, the most recent being Aug. 12, causing another ash plume in the atmosphere. Indonesia, a country composed of a multitude of small islands, entered the contest. John Seach, volcano researcher for 22 years, lists on his site www.volcanolive.com Papandayan and Marapi volcanoes were raised to level 3 and level 2 alert, respectively (level 4 is highest on the scale). Karangetang volcano is also at level 3, having experienced Vulcan spewings twice in July. In Sulawesi 5000 people evacuated when Lokon erupted Jul. 17. Anak Krakatau in Indonesia (also known as Krakatoa) so far is rather quiet, according to IrishWeatherOnline as of Aug 2. In 1883 the explosion was heard 3,000 miles away when it erupted, killing 40,000 people. Small ash plumes are now being noted. Do you associate Russia with volcanoes? Surprise, surprise. Sally Kuhn Sennert, weekly report editor for United States Geological Survey (USGS) wrote in her 3 August – 9 August 2011 Smithsonian Institute report: in eastern Kamchatka, Karymsky ejected an ash plume on Aug. 8 to an altitude of 14,000 feet while lava flowed down Kizimen’s flank Jul. 29 through Aug. 5. Shiveluch in central Kamchatka had to beat both: ash plumes shot up above 20,000 feet on Aug. 1, 6 and 9. So, which of the gods has the lovely and flirtatious goddess Venus been cozying up to lately? Her husband is madly beating his anvil and squeezing his bellows – as ash plumes billow upwards and lava flows downwards. Check back next week for Vulcan’s violent vituperations now occurring in the three Americas. (TO BE CONTINUED). It doesn’t matter if it was half used. We’ll replace it with a full one.” If their ink damages your printer, they will fix it or replace it. There is a growing movement to shut down most - if not all - of the Medical Marijuana dispensaries now operating in California. Many blame the MMJ industry for this change in attitude by our state lawmakers due to the lack of self-regulation. And who can blame them? Every dispensary serves as an ambassador to their community and shapes the impression of medical marijuana by the local citizenry. If the industry doesn’t step up their game, it seems inevitable that more restrictive regulations will be forth coming. Unfortunately, the good dispensaries could be eliminated along with the bad ones that should be shut down. The time is overdue for a trade group to set some commonsense guidelines under which dispensaries should operate. Or, even better, it’s time for our state legislators to issue clear statewide guidelines for dispensing marijuana in California that protect the rights of patients, cultivators and the dispensaries that operate according to the rules. Edible manufacturer’s have established CAPSCE (California Association of Producers of Safe Cannabis Extracts) to promote safety standards for food items, tinctures and concentrated forms of marijuana. Standards include the mandatory lab-testing and labeling of all cannabis products. This is clearly a step in the right direction that was driven by efforts
Valley Therapeutic Healing Center) located in Thousand Palms. They are the only dispensary in the Inland Empire that advertises the fact that they lab-test all of their meds. Unfortunately, some dispensaries in the desert have stated on their websites that they have lab-tested meds when in fact, they don’t. This is a prime example of why lawmakers are cracking down on the industry to protect unsuspecting patients from unscrupulous operators. Also, all too many dispensaries look like head shops or strip bars. Ads abound with scantily-clad buxom beauties to attract younger customers. This creates a bad impression for many people who initially supported medical marijuana. A good dispensary should look and run like the medical office that it is. The tide is definitely changing. There is a tsunami offshore that threatens to obliterate medical marijuana as we’ve known it for the past 15 years. It’s up to all of us to behave in the most ethical and professional manner possible. There are economic forces afoot to take over the industry. Wall Street has realized the vast amounts of money that are being made from marijuana and they want in. Our actions now could determine the future outcome.
