JLSS Creates Another Successful OBTS Campaign Since 2003, Operation Back to School has distributed backpacks to over 8,000 students with supplies valued at $70,000. In 2010, the Junior League partnered with Schenectady Community College and Schenectady City School district to start providing the Smart Scholars students with school supplies. Smart Scholars are students who receive extra academic support to make sure they are learning at grade level and ready to participate in rigorous collegiate courses. The purpose of the program is to increase high school and college completion rates for those historically left in the gap. It is also to reduce student tuition costs as a result of the compressed time needed to complete a college degree. We couldn’t have said it better than a smart scholar, “It makes me happy inside to know that college and high school is also important to others like me. I just wanted you to know that I appreciated what you guys have done for everyone.” And from one of our members, “I think the backpack thing is one of the best things I do. Giving supplies to kids that have the potential to be embarrassed or ridiculed because they lack them is wonderful.” As a means of thanks, the Board of Trustees for SCCC presented a Resolution of Appreciation to JLSS for our ongoing support of the Smart Scholars program. A huge thank you goes out to the individuals and special donors who continue to support OBTS. This year the donors included: Stewart’s Shops, Huntington Learning Center, David and Mary Catherine White, Fenimore Asset Management, and WGY Christmas Wish.

A Message from our President As I was tearing out the walls of my in-laws’ flood-damaged house, I realized I felt lucky. It had been a crazy couple of weeks with Hurricanes Irene and Lee - our Stockade neighborhood near the Mohawk was evacuated twice and neighbors experienced significant damage. My father was trapped in his house near the Susquehanna without power for days due to flooding. My husband’s mother, grandmother and aunt in Prattsville had much of their town demolished and their homes completely filled by the Schoharie Creek. And of course there had been more stress at work and home - isn’t there always? I generally try to be positive, but that day I was simply sad, and felt I had no energy to be otherwise. So, I wasn’t even bothering to try to make myself feel good. I was just JLSS President doing what had to be done, which that day was pulling up the floors Julie White Eklund and pulling down the walls of a house my husband’s family has lived in for 65 years. When the day started it was just me, my husband, my mother-in-law and two of her girlfriends - hardly an impressive work crew. But people just kept showing up. Most of them weren’t from the area and didn’t know anyone in the area. They just wanted to help. Some had hammers and shovels, some brought water and Gatorade and sandwiches, some provided information on other resources my in-laws could utilize. And somewhere between tearing out the bathroom and the hall closet, coated in river muck and sweating in my rubber boots, I realized just how lucky I felt. Firstly, because I was able to consciously experience what it felt like to have a stranger come and help me at a pretty difficult time, simply because they wanted to make that little corner of the world better. I know I have experienced the kindness of strangers many times in my life, but I don’t think I ever really appreciated it in the moment. Secondly, because I remembered that I am rarely in that position. By any standard, simply by being healthy and well-fed and educated, I am one of the luckiest women ever to walk this planet. I am fortunate enough to usually be on the other side of charity. I am the one handing out backpacks of school supplies, or donating clothes, or writing a check, or even unskillfully wielding a hammer and helping someone build (or rebuild). It could so easily be otherwise, as I saw that day. Any of us could find ourselves laid low by circumstance. But today, and most days, I get to be the one who is helping. We give you a lot of opportunities to help in the Junior League and our relatively small group of women does an incredible amount of good in the community. I’m sure you all have your own craziness and I am more grateful than I can express that you take the time and effort to lend a hand; to make a difference. But I hope that, the next time you get in your car to volunteer or attend a meeting or you sit down to write a check, you will also, even for just a minute, feel what I recently recognized - that even when things aren’t perfect, you are so lucky simply to be in a position to be able to give to someone else that day, instead of being the one in need. Remembering Helen George We are sad to report the passing of Helen George, a steadfast member of the Junior League right through her final days. Mrs. George died peacefully on August 24, 2011 at the Kingsway Arms Nursing Center in Schenectady. She was 99 years old. Mrs. George was full of grace and always willing to share a story about the League to any ear that would listen and gave wonderful insight and advice about the League. A humble person, she would often respond with, “of course, but wouldn’t you like someone more important?” when asked to serve as an honorary member of League-related committees. As past-president Deneen Palmateer said, “There was never anyone more important than Helen!” Helen became part of the League in 1934 as a transfer from Youngstown, Ohio. She went on to serve as President twice (first from 1946-1948, then from 1951-1952). As President, she helped the League collaborate with Pleasant Valley School to establish the Cerebral Palsy School. In addition to volunteering at the school, the League donated nearly $30,000 between 1947 and 1956. In 1948 the Junior League established the Next-to-New Shop. The shop provided a source of funding for many Junior League initiatives. Our League is undoubtedly better because of Helen’s commitment over the years. A cocktail party was held in June 2011 to celebrate the commitment of our outstanding sustaining members. Held at the Kingways Manor to honor Mrs. George, over 40 Junior League members were in attendance to pay tribute to Helen for her years of service and dedication. The day after the event, in true fashion, Mrs. George called to thank organizers for arranging the event and then sent a note for our Schenexus to thank all who attended. All who knew Mrs. George are better because of it, and every organization she touched has benefitted from her caring heart. She will be deeply missed within our League and throughout our community. Special thanks to Ms. Deneen Palmateer for her assistance with this article. Helen George is pictured here, second from left, with other JLSS sustaining members.
