T.I. Jazz Band “Sweet Georgia Brown”

Live Sound Recording

Summary This is a live recording of the illustrious Texas Instruments Jazz Band performing at their annual Mardi Gras show. They used a PA mixer for the small hall the performance was in, so we used two Sennheiser 421 microphones hooked up to an h4n Zoom recorder for a wide A-B recording.

Mixing Notes This group has more of a big-band feel than a jazz band, strictly speaking. I took the left mic track (closer to the singer) and panned it to the center. I then took the panned-right track, duplicated, inverted, and panned the duplicate left to widen the aural image. I used small EQ boosts on the rights’ to bring out more of the darker color, then modified the EQ on the main (left) track to cut out the high frequency noise of the room but not remove the vocalist’s spark.
