Measuring Technique Due to the spherical nature of the object, I was unable to successfully scan and trace the outline of the pineapple’s form. Instead, I took a series of photographs of the pineapple next to a ruler which acted as a referrence point to determine the size of each element made up the object’s form. Photographs from above and of various faces of the pineapple were taken in order to aid in the formation of the scaled orthogonal drawing.

Analysis

Through analysis of the pineapple, it became apparent that each panel was arranged in a diagonal line, with each line being comprised of distinctive panels of slightly different geomotries. In some rows there were pentagons, in others there were hexagons or squares. The organic nature of the pineapple, therefore, makes it hard to determine a common panel shape, however, it allows for exploration later in creating quite unique forms and volume.

Sketch Model For my reconfigured model, i I deconstructed the skin of the pineapple by cutting along the diagonal lines created by the panel arrangement. When layed out, the skin naturally held a greater curve at the ends due to a shorter circumference that existed around pineapple. The same curve was illustrated through my sketch model, along with the distinctive panel shapes.

Each curved layer is gradually set back from the previous one in order to create depth and volume, as well as to illustrate the 3-dimensional nature of the pineapple’s skin.

Sketch Design #1 VULNERABLE, SHELTER, CONCEALED

Additional edges are added to the panelling mesh in order to create curvatures.

Each panels could be seperate, yet joined together through a continuous surface.

The penlling elements drawn from the pineapple have been used in a shield-like form that conceals and protects aspects of the human body that are most vulnerable.

How does this respond to your personal space? This particular design responds to the subject of personal space through the concealment of part of the human body that are recognised as essential and therefore vulnerable. The 2nd skin seeks to shelter these body parts through the use of panellling.

Sketch Design #2 COMMUNICATION, INTERACTION, EXPRESSION

The same branching concept has been harnessed in this design.

This sketch desgin focuses on the aspect of revealing as a means to interact and communicate.

How does this respond to your personal space? Using the leaf elements of the pineapple, this design is inspired by the way in which each leaf overlaps and branches out from a central location. This design responds to the topic of personal space by opening up the face and chest of the human body as a means to promote interaction and communication with others and the environment. The branching-out design feature radiates the users energy in a sense and encourages bodily and facial expression.

Sketch Design #3 DANGER, PROTECTION, DEFENSE

The 2nd skin could have different states depending on the user, that is, in the prosence of danger, the panels could fold up and out as a defensive mechanism.

Possible mechinasm to control the folds of the 2nd skin: strongs could pull the flaps up and out at the clenching of a fist.

This design adopts the leaf elements of the pineapple as a means to create form. Layering and folding allow for the rotation and depth within the design.

How does this respond to your personal space? This design addresses the personal space as something that must be preserved and protected in the event of danger. The design operates as a defense mechanism that wards off threats to ones personal space through the manipulation of sharp panels resting on the users shoulders and neck.
