CLASSIC
Welcome to the 2015 RST collection, 2015 is a huge year for RST, for the last two years we’ve been partnering the Isle of Man Classic TT, and now for 2015 we’re proud to announce that RST will be the Official Safety Partner of the main Isle of Man TT; without doubt the worlds most famous and toughest race. Becoming the Official Saftey Partner of the Isle of Man TT is a huge honour for RST, we always pride ourselves on developing and testing our kit in the toughest conditions we can find, so having riders (and the Traveling Marshalls without whom the TT couldn’t run) testing and developing RST at the TT is another string to the RST bow. We are also pleased to welcome Alex Lowes to the RST family for 2015, keep an eye out for him aboard the Crescent Suzuki GSXR1000 in world superbikes this year, he’s been flying in winter testing and our money is on him for a good few wins this year! Another new project from RST for 2015 is our network of new RST Concept Stores. Alongside our network of fantastic RST dealers we have set up a handful of RST Concept Stores, these destination dealers have in stock every line you’ll see in the RST catalogue, so if there’s something you want to see or try on in the flesh head to your nearest concept store. We’ll be opening more through the year so keep up to date at our dealer listing page on the RST website. The RST Concept Stores will also be launching the RST Race Dept bespoke suit service, where you can design and spec your own suit in-store, with a range of colours, printed finishes and badging options, you can completely personalize your suit and get the full factory treatment! With so much happening this year we’ve struggled to fit it all in the catalogue, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with the action (we run plenty of competitions throughout the year with some amazing prizes too!). I hope your year is as exciting as ours promises to be!

...AN ACHIEVEMENT THAT IS STILL TO BE EQUALLED. BUT THE BINGLEY MAN WENT FROM ‘HERO TO ZERO’ OVERNIGHT FOLLOWING AN APPALLING INJURY HE SUSTAINED IN A CRASH AT SILVERSTONE. AS MEDICS FOUGHT DESPERATELY TO SAVE THE LEG OF THE RIDER, MANY CONSIDERED THAT ‘HUTCHYS’ CAREER WAS ALL BUT OVER AND ALL IN THE VERY SAME YEAR HE HAD ACHIEVED SUCH GREATNESS ON THE ISLAND. THE ‘BINGLEY BULLET’ IS A FIGHTER AND ONE CAN ONLY STAND IN AWE AT THE SHEER DETERMINATION THE THIRTY-FIVE YEAR OLD HAS DISPLAYED IN HIS ATTEMPTS TO RETURN TO RACING AND WINNING WAYS. SET-BACKS HAVE BEEN APLENTY AND SO OFTEN WHEN A LIGHT APPEARED AT THE END OF THIS VERY LONG TUNNEL, IT SOON BECOME A MERE FLICKER BEFORE DISSIPATING BACK INTO DARKNESS. MANY CONSIDERED THAT THE EIGHT TIME TT WINNER SHOULD CALL TIME ON HIS RACING CAREER, STATING THAT THAT HIS EFFORTS WERE “SIMPLY FUTILE”. BUT HUTCHINSON FOUGHT BACK, TIME AND TIME AGAIN MUCH TO THE ADMIRATION OF HIS MANY FANS AND FELLOW PROFESSIONALS.
YEARS. IT SEEMS RATHER SURREAL FOR A RIDER WHO ETCHED HIS NAME IN MOTORCYCLING HISTORY BY RACING AGAINST THE CLOCK AROUND THE ISLE OF MAN, HAD EFFECTIVELY FOUND HIMSELF IN PERHAPS THE MOST DIFFICULT RACE AGAINST TIME OFF THE BIKE, AIMING TO TRY AND SAVE HIS CAREER IN THE SPORT HE CONSIDERED TO BE “LIFE”. YOU’RE AS GOOD AS YOUR LAST RIDE, WHERE EMPLOYMENT FOR ROAD RACERS IS SO OFTEN DETERMINED BY THE RESULTS ON THE BOARD. INJURY PLAYS ITS PART, WITH LUCK UNDOUBTEDLY A MAJOR FACTOR FOR ANYONE PLAYING THIS HIGH STAKES GAME OF POKER ON THE ROADS. HUTCHINSON HAD CERTAINLY NOT HAD THE LUCK, THE INJURY WAS STILL A MAJOR CONCERN AND THE RESULTS WERE MERE FRAGMENTS OF THE PAST ENGRAVED ON SOME SILVERWARE IN A DOUGLAS DISPLAY CABINET. FOR 2013, REHABILITATION WAS THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE, BUT HUTCHINSON HAD EXPRESSED A DESIRE TO RACE AT THE MACAU GRAND PRIX. DESPITE SOME DIFFICULTIES SECURING THE RIDE DUE TO A LATE ENTRY FROM THE TEAM, ORGANISERS OVER-RULED THE DELAY AND GRANTED ‘HUTCHY’ HIS PLACE ON THE GRID. THE REST IS MERE FAIRY TALE AND THE STUFF OF LEGEND. HUTCHINSON VERY MUCH SANG THE TUNE AND WROTE
DESPITE THIS LATEST SET-BACK, IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCES DID FOLLOW AT BOTH THE NORTH WEST 200 AND ISLE OF MAN TT THAT YEAR, OFFERING SOME CONSOLATION TO THE RIDER THAT THE EXCEL INCIDENT WAS POSSIBLY JUST A MERE BLIP ON THE RECOVERY ROAD. WHAT APPEARED WHOLLY INCONCEIVABLE JUST MONTHS BEFORE HAD TO BE ADMIRED. EVEN THOSE WHO HAD “CALLED TIME” ON THE RIDERS CAREER AFTER EXCEL, WERE LEFT SOMEWHAT CHEWING ON THEIR APPARENT WORDS OF WISDOM AFTER HUTCHINSON DELIVERED SUCH GUTSY PERFORMANCES, PARTICULARLY AT THE TT WHERE HIS EFFORTS BECOME PART OF MANX RACING FOLKLORE. A NEW YEAR AND THE RIDER BEGAN A FURTHER INTENSIVE PERIOD OF ESSENTIAL THERAPY AND REHABILITATION ON THE LEG INJURY THAT HAD NOW PLAGUED HIM FOR MORE THAN TWO YEARS. BY HIS OWN ADMISSION WHEN HE HAD THE ACCIDENT BACK IN 2010, HUTCHINSON WAS TALKING ABOUT MONTHS FOR HIS RECOVERY. NEVER DID HE CONTEMPLATE IT WOULD TAKE

IT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE AND THAT WAS A TURNING POINT AT MACAU AFTER MONTHS, IN FACT YEARS OF HELL. NOBODY FULLY REALISES WHAT I HAVE BEEN THROUGH. ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS, THE DIFFICULTY TO COME BACK FROM SERIOUS INJURY AS A PROFESSIONAL BIKE RACER AND AFTER SPENDING EXTREMELY LONG PERIODS OF TIME IN HOSPITAL WAS VERY HARD. THERE WERE ENDLESS DAYS, WHERE I WOULD EVEN WONDER IF I’D HAVE A LEG AT THE END OF THE REHABILITATION. IT WAS A STRESSFUL PERIOD FOR SURE AND DURING THAT TIME I SAW SO MUCH HAPPEN, WITH INFECTIONS AND THEN TRYING TO GET IT STRONG BEFORE IT WAS REALLY READY. SO LOOKING BACK TO MACAU IN 2013, EVERYTHING JUST CAME FLOWING BACK TO ME IN THE SPACE OF THIRTY SECONDS WHEN I KNEW THAT I HAD WON THE RACE. IT WAS QUITE OVERWHELMING.
RST: THIS YEAR (2014) HAS SEEMINGLY BEEN SOMETHING OF FRUSTRATION. THANKFULLY IT HAS BEEN INJURY FREE, BUT INSTEAD YOU’VE HAD TO WRESTLE WITH THE DEMONS OF THE YAMAHA AND THEN BEEN INADVERTENTLY CAUGHT UP IN SOME RACE COLLISIONS THAT WERE NOT YOUR FAULT (MOST NOTABLY ULSTER GRAND PRIX). HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR 2014 YEAR?
WOULD HAVE TAKEN THAT RISK AND GONE RACING. YOU NEVER LOSE THAT ABILITY TO RIDE AND THAT WILL ALWAYS COME BACK. IT’S JUST A CASE OF BEING PATIENT AND PERHAPS SLIGHTLY MORE THAN I HAVE BEEN OVER THE YEARS. I’VE LEARNT SO MUCH DURING THAT TIME AND ALWAYS WANTED TO KEEP RACING.
RST: YOUR FAMILY HAS BEEN A KEY FACTOR OVER THE YEARS SINCE 2010, HELPING YOU GET THROUGH THE INJURY? FOR SURE AND THAT WAS ONE OF THE DIFFICULT THINGS ABOUT THE INJURY, AS IT JUST INTERRUPTS AND IMPACTS UPON ALL OF THOSE THAT ARE CLOSEST TO YOU. I’VE ALWAYS SAID THAT IF ANY OF MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE IN HOSPITAL, I WOULD ALWAYS VISIT THEM, AS I KNOW JUST HOW BAD IT IS WHEN YOU’RE ALONE AND SEE NOBODY WHILE LYING IN A HOSPITAL BED. VISITING FRIENDS OR RELATIVES IN HOSPITAL IS QUITE SIMPLY A PAIN IN THE ARSE AND WHILE YOU MIGHT DO IT ONCE OR TWICE, IT’S NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN OR WILL DO EVERY DAY. WITH MY INJURY, I HAD TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME IN COVENTRY AND WHILE I CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE QUITE A STRONG PERSON AND MAY NOT NECESSARILY NEED PEOPLE THERE EVERY DAY, THERE WERE TIMES WHEN IT WAS INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT. ON THOSE DARK DAYS, WHEN YOU’RE FEELING LOW, MAYBE IMMEDIATELY AFTER A BIG OPERATION, YOU’RE SAT THERE WATCHING ALL THE VISITORS FOR THE OTHER PATIENTS
IN THE WARD, KNOWING THAT THERE IS NOBODY COMING TO SEE YOU. THAT CAN REALLY GET INTO YOU OVER TIME.
RST: A RECENT MOVE BY PAUL BIRD TO SECURE YOUR SERVICES TO RIDE THE KAWASAKI MUST SURELY PROVIDE YOU WITH THE CONFIDENCE TO PROVE AND POTENTIALLY REPEAT YOUR WINNING PERFORMANCES FROM 2010? I ONLY NEEDED TO LOOK AT JUST HOW COMMITTED PAUL BIRD HAS BEEN AND STILL IS AS A TEAM OWNER. THE DEDICATION THAT HE SHOWS TOWARDS EVERYTHING THAT HE DOES IS INCREDIBLE. HE WILL DELIVER ON WHAT HE SAYS HE WILL DELIVER AND IF YOU CAN GET THAT, THERE IS NOTHING ELSE THAT YOU CAN REALLY ASK FOR IN TERMS OF SUPPORT. IF I’VE GOT ALL THE TOOLS FOR THE JOB, THE BEST BIKE UNDER ME, THEN THE REST IS DOWN TO ME AND I HAVE NO DOUBTS THAT I WILL GET EVERYTHING I NEED FROM PAUL. THE ISLE OF MAN TT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THE TEAM AND PAUL’S THERE EVERY SINGLE YEAR, SO I KNOW HOW MUCH EMPHASIS HE PLACES ON THE EVENT. WE SPOKE IN THE PADDOCK LAST YEAR AND HE KNEW THAT I WAS GOING THROUGH SOMETHING OF A TOUGH TIME. IT WAS MENTIONED THAT HE MAY BE LOOKING TO COME BACK TO COMPETE ON THE ISLAND AND WE DISCUSSED OPTIONS. WE’VE BEEN TOGETHER A FEW TIMES
IN MACAU SO I KNOW HIM AND JUST KNEW THAT IF ‘BIRDY’ WAS GOING TO MAKE A RETURN TO THE TT, THAT WOULD BE THE BEST OPTION FOR ME, SHOULD THE RIDE BECOME AVAILABLE. IT’S A GOOD TEAM ALSO, WITH EXCELLENT PEOPLE WHO ARE SWITCHED ON TO THE TT. THEY KNOW THE SCRIPT AND THE BIKE WILL BE THE BEST IT CAN POSSIBLY BE FOR THE RACE. THAT IS THE KIND OF SUPPORT THAT ANY RIDER IS SEEKING IF THEY ARE TO HAVE THE BEST CHANCE OF SUCCESS. THERE IS A LOT OF WORK GOING ON WITH THE BIKE CURRENTLY THROUGH THE WINTER AND THERE WILL BE SOME PRE-SEASON TESTING TAKING PLACE IN THE NEW YEAR. WE HAVE SOME USEFUL ROADS DATA WHICH WILL ENABLE US TO GAIN THE OPTIMUM SETTINGS FOR 2015 AND I’M CONFIDENT THAT WE CAN DO WELL.
RST: Where did the motorcycling start for you? IT WAS CERTAINLY NOT SOMETHING THAT STARTED EARLY FOR ME BECAUSE MY PARENTS WERE SO AGAINST RIDING MOTORBIKES. I SPENT YEARS PESTERING THEM FOR A BIKE, BUT TO NO AVAIL. THERE WAS A GUY AT MY SCHOOL CALLED MARTIN CROSSLEY WHO WAS THE BRITISH JUNIOR TRIAL CHAMPION AND WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL. HE LIVED NEARBY AND WOULD TRAIN EVERY DAY. SO I WOULD RUN HOME FROM SCHOOL, DUMP MY BAG, GET CHANGED
I HAVE SAID AND QUITE OPENLY, THAT 2014 WAS A COMPLETE DISASTER FOR ME. BUT ON REFLECTION I WAS PROBABLY A LITTLE OVERZEALOUS MAKING SUCH A STATEMENT. THE REALITY IS THAT I HAD TO START BACK SOMEWHERE. IN SOME RESPECTS AND MAYBE COMING OFF THE BACK OF THE MACAU WIN, GOING INTO 2014 I CERTAINLY EXPECTED A LOT MORE FROM MYSELF AND MAYBE OTHERS ANTICIPATED I WOULD DELIVER MORE THAT YEAR BECAUSE OF THE WIN. I TOOK ON A GREAT DEAL AT THE START OF THE YEAR AND THERE IS NO SECRET TO THE FACT THAT I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO COMPETE AND DO WELL IN THE BRITISH SUPERBIKES. SO WHEN THAT OPPORTUNITY PRESENTED ITSELF, I HAD TO TAKE IT, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT WAS THE RIGHT OR WRONG TIME.
OFTEN WITHDRAWN AND A MAN OF VERY FEW WORDS AROUND THE PADDOCK, HUTCHINSON MADE A TENTATIVE RETURN TO RACING IN 2011, FOLLOWING A GRUELLING PERIOD OF REHABILITATION. COUNTLESS OPERATIONS ON THE INJURED LEG, COUPLED WITH INTENSE THERAPY AND EXCRUCIATING PAIN, WHICH FEW COULD EVEN CONTEMPLATE, WAS ALL HIDDEN AWAY FROM THE MEDIA AND PUBLIC GAZE. HUTCHINSON WAS TAKING HIS JOURNEY ALONE AND RARELY SPOKE OF THE DEEP ANXIETY HE WAS FEELING AWAY FROM THE SPORT THAT HE LOVED SO DEARLY. THAT SAME YEAR DID SEE THE BINGLEY RIDER BRING HIS SWAN YAMAHA HOME TO THIRD PLACE AT THE MACAU GRAND PRIX. IT WAS A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE ON HIS RETURN TO RACING AND ACHIEVED AT A CIRCUIT SO OFTEN CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE MOST DEMANDING FOR ANY RACER. HOWEVER, IT WAS AGAIN TO BE ANOTHER SHIMMER OF LIGHT ON THIS ROCKY ROAD TO RECOVERY. A RATHER INNOCUOUS OFF ROAD FALL DURING REHEARSALS FOR THE CAROLE NASH 2012 EXCEL BIKE SHOW, RESULTED IN A FURTHER BREAK TO AN ALREADY FRAGILE LEG. HEARTS SANK AT SUCH MISFORTUNE AND SHEER BAD LUCK FOR A RIDER OF IMMENSE TALENT, WHO HAD SHOWN SUCH RESOLVE TO RETURN TO RACING MOTORCYCLES. HUTCHINSON ONCE SAID, “RACING IS LIFE. IT’S THAT SIMPLE”, AND NEVER COULD SUCH A STATEMENT APPLY SO APTLY TO THIS GRITTY CHAMPION OF THE ROADS. HE HAD BATTLED ON WITH HIS USUAL SPIRIT AND FOCUS. BUT NOW, EVEN THOSE LOYAL FOLLOWERS WHO HAD URGED THE RIDER BACK TO FITNESS AND WINNING WAYS, HOPING TO AGAIN POSSIBLY WITNESS THE BRILLIANCE HE’D DISPLAYED IN 2010, WERE BEGINNING TO DOUBT WHETHER THIS WAS IN FACT A BRIDGE TOO FAR.
JOURNEY TO RECOVER FROM APPALLING INJURIES. HOW DID YOU FEEL PERSONALLY?
THE FACT IS QUITE SIMPLY THAT I TOOK THE DECISION TO GO AND COMPETE IN THE SERIES. I VALUED THAT EXTRA TIME I WAS ABLE TO HAVE ON THE BIKE, CERTAINLY AFTER SUCH A LONG PERIOD AWAY, SO FROM THAT PERSPECTIVE IT WAS REALLY USEFUL. BUT OBVIOUSLY IT WAS DIFFICULT AT THE SAME TIME. CERTAINLY WITH A BIKE THAT CAN BE SO DEMANDING ON BOTH RIDER AND TEAM. TO RECEIVE THAT OFFER AT THE START OF THE YEAR WAS POSITIVE, BUT IN HINDSIGHT WOULD I DO IT AGAIN? THE SCRIPT LIKE FEW COULD EVER HAVE IMAGINED. HE TOOK POLE POSITION FROM SEASONED MACAU VETERAN MICHAEL RUTTER, GOING ON TO WIN THE RACE IN HIS OWN GRITTY STYLE. MANY CONSIDERED THAT FOR A RIDER WHO HAD FOUGHT SO BRAVELY AGAINST THE ODDS AND STARED ADVERSITY DIRECTLY IN THE FACE ON SO MANY OCCASIONS, HUTCHINSON HAD NOW FOUND THAT LIGHT AT THE END OF THIS LONG HEROIC JOURNEY. IT WAS QUITE LITERALLY A ‘MIRACLE’ ON THE STREETS AT THE 47TH MACAU GRAND PRIX.
RST: IT’S BEEN AN INCREDIBLY LONG ROAD. WAS THE COMEBACK COMPLETE AFTER MACAU IN 2013? ABSOLUTELY NOT!! THE COMEBACK WILL NOT BE COMPLETE UNTIL I HAVE WON ANOTHER TT. OBVIOUSLY MACAU IS A VERY DIFFERENT CHALLENGE FROM TRYING TO WIN ON THE ISLE OF MAN, ESPECIALLY AFTER FOUR YEARS AWAY THROUGH INJURY. IT WAS STILL GOOD AND GREAT TO BE BACK ON THE PODIUM, BUT IN NO WAY DID I CONSIDER THAT TO BE THE POINT WHERE I FELT THE COMEBACK WAS COMPLETE.
RST: EMOTIONS WERE RUNNING HIGH AFTER YOU’D CROSSED THE LINE AND IT WAS INCREDIBLE FOR ALL WATCHING YOU TAKE THE VICTORY AFTER SUCH A SPIRITED AND HARD FOUGHT
TO EFFECTIVELY BECOME THE THIRD RIDER OF THE TEAM AND WHERE YOU KNOW THE SUPPORT WOULD NOT NECESSARILY BE THE SAME AS IT IS FOR THE TWO MAIN RIDERS OR WHERE YOU ARE SOMEWHAT PLACED ON THE SIDE LINES, WAS SOMETHING ELSE. I TOOK IT ALL ON BOARD AT THE START AND I’D ACCEPTED THAT POSITION FULLY KNOWING THAT WOULD BE THE CASE, SO I STAND BY THAT. BUT WOULD I DO THAT AGAIN? PROBABLY NOT [LAUGHS HUTCHINSON]. IT WAS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE UNDOUBTEDLY.
RST: FEW COULD EVEN CONTEMPLATE WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN THROUGH BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY SINCE 2010. THERE MUST HAVE BEEN TIMES WHEN YOU’VE CONSIDERED THROWING IN THE TOWEL? NEVER!! THAT IS SOMETHING THAT HAS NEVER CROSSED MY MIND AND I WOULD BE TOTALLY LOST WITHOUT RACING. IT WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BECOME A PROBLEM ONE DAY, UNLESS BY SOME CHANCE I GROW OUT OF IT AND I CAN’T SEE THAT HAPPENING ANY TIME SOON. RACING IS ALL I’VE WANTED TO DO. IT’S STILL ALL THAT I WANT TO DO AND IT IS THE REASON I PUT EVERY EFFORT THAT I CAN INTO THE SPORT. SO CALLING IT A DAY HAS NEVER BEEN ON MY MIND AND NO MATTER HOW BAD IT HAS BEEN, WHATEVER THE CONSEQUENCES MAY BE, I WOULD HAVE DONE IT TO KEEP RACING. IF FOR EXAMPLE MY SURGEON HAD SAID THAT THEY COULD FIX THE LEG, BUT IF I FELL OFF THE BIKE ONCE MORE, THE LEG WOULD HAVE HAD TO BE AMPUTATED, I

AND THEN GO AND WATCH HIM RIDE, ALWAYS BEGGING FOR A GO ON THE BIKE [LAUGHS HUTCHINSON]. SO IT ALL STARTED FROM THERE AND I JUST HOUNDED MY PARENTS, UNTIL EVENTUALLY MY MUM GAVE IN AND AGREED TO GET ME A TRAILS BIKE. THE THEORY BEHIND THE PLAN FOR MY PARENTS WAS THAT IF I GOT INTO TRIALS RIDING, THEN I WOULD HAVE NO INTEREST IN GOING ON THE ROADS. SO AT THE AGE OF FIFTEEN, MY PARENTS BOUGHT ME A TRIALS BIKE. IT WAS JUST BRILLIANT AND I LOVED IT. SHORTLY AFTER, I STARTED MY APPRENTICESHIP WITH COLIN APPLEYARD AS A MECHANIC AND AS SOON AS I TURNED SEVENTEEN, I TOOK MY TEST FOR THE ROADS. SO THE PLAN FOR MY PARENTS SLIGHTLY BACK-FIRED AS I JUST WANTED A ROAD BIKE. AT THE TIME, I KNEW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT RACING, I HAD NOT FOLLOWED IT AND IT HAD NEVER CROSSED MY MIND THAT I WANTED TO BE A ROAD RACER. THERE WAS A GROUP OF LOCAL LADS, A FEW YEARS OLDER THAN MYSELF THAT USED TO COME INTO APPLEYARDS TO GET THEIR BIKES SERVICED. THEY WERE A GOOD BUNCH OF LADS AND IMPORTANTLY, THEY JUST SEEMED TO HAVE SO MUCH FUN. I JUST WANTED TO BE PART OF IT. WHEN I CHANGED MY JOB AND STARTED WORKING AT ALAN JEFFERIES, I MANAGED TO GET SOME MONEY TOGETHER TO BUY A TZR250 AND JUST STARTED GOING OUT WITH THIS GROUP OF LADS. IN SOME RESPECTS, I LOOK BACK NOW AND THINK IT SORT OF MADE ME THE RIDER THAT I AM TODAY. I WAS YOUNGER, LESS EXPERIENCED THAN THEY WERE, BUT I WANTED TO DO THE THINGS THAT THEY WERE DOING. TRYING TO KEEP UP ON THE RIDES, IT ACTUALLY PUSHED ME TO LEARN THE BIKE MUCH QUICKER. SOME OF IT WAS A LITTLE CRAZY LOOKING BACK ON IT NOW AND I WAS A BIT OF A LUNATIC, MANAGING TO CRASH QUITE A FEW TIMES IN THE PROCESS. IT DEVELOPED ME SO MUCH AS A RIDER, LEARNING THE ROADS, WHILE HAVING A LOT OF FUN IN THE PROCESS. HEADING OVER TO DEVILS BRIDGE ON A SUNDAY MORNING, OR UP TO THE LAKES, WE JUST WENT EVERYWHERE ON THE BIKES. SCRATCHING ON THE ROADS JUST BECAME SUCH A NATURAL THING TO ME AND I JUST PROGRESSED SO QUICKLY. BUT AS THE ROADS BECAME INCREASINGLY BUSY WITH MORE TRAFFIC AND A HEAVIER POLICE PRESENCE WITH THE SPEED CAMERAS EVERYWHERE, IT JUST BECAME HARDER AND HARDER TO DO WHAT WE WANTED TO DO. SO WE DECIDED TO DO A FEW TRACK DAYS AND AT THE SAME TIME I HAD STARTED WORKING AT HOBB SPORT RACING WHERE I WAS BUILDING ENGINES FOR RACE BIKES. I WAS JUST SEEING IT EVERY DAY, WITH RACE BIKES COMING IN AND OUT OF THE WORKSHOP AND I JUST WANTED ONE. A GUY CALLED GORDON WHITTAKER WHO USED TO COMPETE IN BRITISH SUPERSPORT AND WHOSE SON IS GRANT WHITTAKER, AGREED TO LEND ME A RACE BIKE. OFF WE WENT TO DO SOME CLUB RACING, THROWING A FEW CHEAP SIX HUNDREDS INTO THE BACK OF A VAN, DRAGGING A BATTERED OLD CARAVAN ALONG AND LIVING THE DREAM. IT WAS JUST BRILLIANT. WE MANAGED TO GET ACROSS TO THE TT AND WATCH THE RACING, BUT AGAIN IT WAS NOT ON MY RADAR AS SOMETHING THAT I EVEN CONTEMPLATED I WOULD DO. I KNEW VERY LITTLE ABOUT THE RIDERS OR WHAT THE TT WAS ALL ABOUT, BUT IT GAVE ME A FEEL FOR EVERYTHING. THE FANS, THE ATMOSPHERE AND THE BIKES WAS SIMPLY INCREDIBLE. HAVING WORKED AT ALAN JEFFERIES, I KNEW DJ (DAVID JEFFERIES) AND I HAD BRIEFLY MET SOME OF THE RIDERS LIKE JOHN (MCGUINNESS). THE FIRST PLACE THAT I EVER WATCHED THE RACE UP CLOSE WAS RHENCULLEN, WHERE YOU COULD LITERALLY LIE ON THE BANKING NEXT TO THE TRACK. WE WOULD WATCH THE RACES AND THEN I WAS JUST ITCHING TO GET ONTO MY OWN BIKE AND START RIDING AGAIN. IN TERMS OF THE RIDERS, BECAUSE I KNEW DJ, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT I WAS INTERESTED IN FOR SURE AND IT GAVE YOU THAT ADDED IMPETUS TO SEE HOW HE WAS PERFORMING ON TRACK. I REMEMBER BEING SAT NEXT TO A COUPLE ON THE BANK AT RHENCULLEN IN 1999 AND THEY ASKED ME WHO I HAD COME TO SEE, WHICH I REPLIED DJ. HE WON HIS FIRST ISLE OF MAN TT THAT DAY. THE COUPLE SEEMED RATHER SURPRISED ASKING ME WHETHER I KNEW HE WOULD WIN THAT DAY, WHICH I SAID “OF COURSE I DID” [LAUGHS HUTCHINSON]. MOST PEOPLE AT THAT TIME, I WOULD SAY WERE JOEY DUNLOP OR PHILIP MCCALLEN FANS. SO DJ WAS NOT AS WELL KNOWN, BUT WATCHING HIM THAT DAY RIDING THE V&M YAMAHA WAS SIMPLY BREATH TAKING. HE WAS A VERY SPECIAL RIDER AND IMPRES

SIVE. MCCALLEN WAS CERTAINLY SOMETHING AT THE TIME AND YOU COULD NOT HELP BUT ADMIRE WHAT HE DID ON THE BIKE. I WOULD ALSO LOOK OUT FOR NICK JEFFERIES, WHO WAS MY BOSS AND THEN THERE WAS MCGUINNESS WHO WAS SPECTACULARLY SMOOTH RIDING THE VIMTO FIVE HUNDRED MACHINE.
RST: THE ISLE OF MAN TT IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE ULTIMATE TEST FOR BOTH RIDER AND MACHINE. WHAT MAKES THE EVENT SO SPECIAL FOR A ROAD RACER? IT HAS TO BE THE CIRCUIT FOR SURE. THERE IS NOTHING THAT COMPARES OR COMES MARGINALLY CLOSE TO IT ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. IF YOU CONSIDER GOING OUT ON YOUR ROAD BIKE, ON OPEN ROADS AND TRYING TO RIDE LIKE YOU WOULD IN THE TT, WELL WE DID. SO TO ACTUALLY GO THERE AND RIDE EVEN FASTER, TAKE MORE RISKS AND IT IS ALL LEGAL, DOESN’T COME ANY BETTER FOR ME. THAT IS WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL FOR ANY RIDER WHO COMPETES THERE.
RST: DO YOU FAVOUR ANY PARTICULAR SECTIONS OF THE COURSE AND ALSO ARE THERE ANY LEAST FAVOURITES? I HAVE NEVER REALLY HAD ANY PREFERRED SECTIONS OF THE COURSE. FROM THE START TO BALLACRAINE IS JUST FAIRLY CONSTANT AND RELATIVELY STRAIGHT FORWARD FOR EVERYONE I WOULD SAY. IT’S OBVIOUSLY VERY FAST FROM QUARTER BRIDGE THROUGH TO THAT POINT AND ALL ABOUT BRAKING AND PEELING POINTS, ON THE THROTTLE AND IDENTICAL FOR EVERY RIDER. YOU CARRY A LOT OF SPEED IN FIFTH AND SIXTH GEAR, BUT IT IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST MONOTONOUS SECTIONS OF THE COURSE, WHERE YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GAIN A GREAT DEAL OF TIME ON THE OTHER COMPETITORS. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT DON’T GET ME WRONG, BUT IT’S WHERE YOU KEEP IT PINNED AND AIM TO GET THROUGH. OBVIOUSLY A GOOD SIX HUNDRED CAN WORK WELL THROUGH THAT SECTION, CERTAINLY UP TO GLEN HELEN AND THEN I THINK YOU CAN GET FOUND OUT A LITTLE. THE REST OF THE COURSE IS QUITE GOOD AND THERE ARE SOME KEY POINTS WHERE I KNOW THAT I CAN RUN WELL. I HAVE TO SAY THAT THE SECTION FROM THE CREG-NY-BAA TO THE FINISH IS HORRENDOUS. I USED TO LIKE IT VERY MUCH, AS YOU COULD REALLY GET STUCK IN WITH FULL COMMITMENT THROUGH HILLBERRY, BUT AFTER THEY RESURFACED THAT SECTION, IT EFFECTIVELY RUINED THE CORNER. HILLBERRY IS NOW VERY MUCH A GET IN AND GET OUT CORNER. SIGNPOST IS EQUALLY STRANGE WITH THE LONG LEFT, WHERE YOU’RE NOT QUITE ON FULL LEAN OR THROTTLE. IT’S A BIT OF A FIFTY PENCE TYPE CORNER NOW. FOR ME I HAVE ALWAYS TREATED THE MOUNTAIN SECTION AS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF THE COURSE. YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT MANY OF THE CORNERS ACROSS THE MOUNTAIN ARE EXTREMELY HIGH SPEED AND OFTEN BLIND. SO IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO LEARN AND UNDERSTAND THAT PART OF THE COURSE FULLY AND I WOULD SAY THAT CAN TAKE SOME TIME. YOU THINK YOU HAVE ACTUALLY LEARNT THE MOUNTAIN, BUT YOU HAVEN’T AND WHEN YOU FINALLY GET TO A POINT WHERE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE, IT CAN BE A LITTLE SCARY ON A COUPLE OF CORNERS BECAUSE YOU ARE JUST SO COMMITTED, RUNNING ON THE SIDE OF THE TYRE WITH THE BIKE LENT OVER AS FAR AS IS ABSOLUTELY POSSIBLE. YOU’RE RUNNING IN FOURTH OR FIFTH GEAR AND IF IT ISN’T ENOUGH, YOU CAN QUICKLY FIND YOURSELF RUNNING OUT OF ROAD. BUT THAT IS THE POINT WHERE YOU’VE GOT IT RIGHT AND WHEN YOU EXIT THE CORNER, IT’S NOT LIKE YOU’VE DONE IT ON A WING AND A PRAYER. IT IS SOMETHING YOU JUST BUILD UP TO AND I WOULD SAY IT’S POSSIBLY SOMETHING THAT COMES WITH TIME.
RST: THE ISLE OF MAN TT COURSE IS SAID TO CONSTANTLY EVOLVE WITH A RIDER THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER RACING THERE. ARE YOU STILL LEARNING THE CIRCUIT? FOR SURE YOU ARE ALWAYS LEARNING THE COURSE AND IT CHANGES EACH AND EVERY YEAR. YOU MUST TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THAT THERE ARE SO MANY FACTORS TO CONSIDER. WHETHER THERE HAS BEEN A BAD WINTER ON THE ISLAND OR HOW MUCH RE-SURFACING WORK THEY MAY HAVE DONE. SO MANY THINGS
134
COULD HAVE CHANGED BY THE TIME YOU RETURN TO THE TT. RE-SURFACING FOR EXAMPLE CAN ACTUALLY MAKE A SECTION MUCH WORSE. WHAT MAY HAVE BEEN A ROUGH BUMPY SECTION OF ROAD, CAN ALL OF A SUDDEN BE RE-SURFACED INTO A SMOOTH BUMPY PIECE OF TARMAC. MAY SOUND GOOD BUT THAT SMOOTH RESURFACED SECTION MEANS YOU GET VERY LITTLE FEELING THROUGH THE BIKE. SO SOMETIMES, THOSE BEST INTENTIONS TO UPGRADE THE TRACK CAN ACTUALLY MAKE A COMPLETE FUCK UP OF THE ROAD AND MORE DIFFICULT FOR THE RIDERS.
RST: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CIRCUIT, BE THAT SHORT OR ROADS? AND WHY? YOU WOULD ALWAYS HAVE TO SAY THE ISLE OF MAN TT, BASICALLY FOR WHAT IT’S ABOUT. THE CIRCUIT IS SO LONG AND INCREDIBLE. AWAY FROM THAT, MY TWO FAVOURITE PLACES WOULD HAVE TO BE DUNDROD (ULSTER GRAND PRIX) AND OULTON PARK IN CHESHIRE.
RST: HAS YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT BEEN WINNING FIVE TT’S IN A WEEK OR RETURNING TO SUCCESS ON THE BIKE AFTER AN ACCIDENT THAT ALMOST ENDED YOUR CAREER? IT HAS TO BE THE FIVE IN A WEEK FOR SURE. AND TO BE HONEST, I WOULD NOT CLASS MY RETURN AS BEING COMPLETE UNTIL I HAVE WON ANOTHER TT. IF I EVER WIN ANOTHER TT AGAIN, AFTER EVERYTHING I’VE BEEN THROUGH OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, THEN THAT WOULD PROBABLY BE MORE SATISFYING THAN THE FIVE IN A WEEK FROM 2010.
RST: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN RACING ON THE ROADS? I’M NOT VERY GOOD AT THAT TO BE HONEST AND I’M VERY CAUTIOUS WITH NEWCOMERS WHEN IT COMES TO GIVING ADVICE. EACH RIDER COMES ON THE SCENE AT VARYING LEVELS AND CAPABILITIES. A LOT OF PEOPLE ASK ME FOR ADVICE AND TO BE HONEST I WOULD NOT WANT TO SAY THE WRONG THING AND THEN SOMEONE GETS HURT. IT IS SO IMPORTANT, IF YOU’RE GOING TO DO IT, THAT YOU JUST GO OUT THERE AND DO YOUR OWN THING. DON’T EVEN LOOK AT ANY OTHER RIDERS AND WHAT THEY HAVE DONE. EVEN SOMEONE LIKE HICKMAN, WHERE YOU CAN THINK TO YOURSELF, WOULD I HAVE REALLY DONE IT THAT WAY? JUST DO IT HOW YOU WANT TO DO IT, DON’T BE LED BY OTHERS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY DO WHAT YOU’RE HAPPY WITH.
RST: AND FOR ALL OF US NORMAL RIDERS SIMPLY DOING A TRACK DAY AND LOOKING TO IMPROVE OUR SKILLS, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ONE PIECE OF ADVICE? I WOULD SAY THAT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO USE ALL THE AVAILABLE SPACE ON THE TRACK. THE ONE THING THAT I HAVE ALWAYS SEEN WITH RIDERS DOING TRACK DAYS IS THAT THEY SIMPLY DON’T UTILISE ALL THE ROAD. YOU SEE RIDERS, EVEN ON THE STRAIGHTS, WHERE THEY RIDE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CIRCUIT AND THEN TRY TO TIP IN FROM THE CENTRE OF THE TRACK. THEY JUST NEED TO REALISE JUST HOW DIFFICULT THEY ARE MAKING IT FOR THEMSELVES. I’VE PASSED RIDERS ON THE OUTSIDE AS YOU APPROACH A CORNER, JUST SIMPLY TO GET PASSED THEM. THEY THEN COME INTO THE GARAGE AND SAY “HOW THE FUCK DID YOU GET ROUND THAT CORNER SO FAST?” IT’S SIMPLE AND YOU CAN SAY TO THEM THAT IT IS TEN TIMES MORE DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO GET ROUND THAT CORNER BECAUSE YOU’RE ONLY USING HALF OF THE TRACK. IT IS PERHAPS A COMFORT THING FOR SOME RIDERS, WHERE THEY THINK THAT BY TAKING THAT APPROACH, THEY WILL HAVE SOME EXTRA ROAD AVAILABLE IF IT ALL GOES HORRIBLY WRONG. THE REALITY IS THAT IT IS MORE LIKELY TO GO WRONG IF YOU DON’T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EVERY AVAILABLE INCH OF TARMAC THAT THE CIRCUIT OFFERS YOU. SO THAT WOULD BE MY ADVICE FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH. AND ALSO DON’T FORGET TO PAY YOUR ENTRY FEE [LAUGHS HUTCHINSON].
RST: BIG THANKS IAN FOR AN INCREDIBLY INSIGHTFUL INTERVIEW. GOOD LUCK FROM EVERYONE AT RST FOR 2015.

...BUT THIS ALSO FOLLOWED SOME MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENTS DURING THE COURSE OF THE YEAR, ESPECIALLY AT THE ISLE OF MAN TT, WHERE THE EXPECTATIONS WERE SO HIGH.
talks about his highly adventurous goals for 2015. Ladies beware!
RST: WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE SEASON FOR YOU THIS YEAR? That is a difficult one, as it has been an incredibly good year for me personally. The North West 200 was rather special, because that was my first international win. For me as a road racer, it was quite important and a great race to add to the career CV. My expectation going into the event, was that I could have possibly won in the Supersport class, but that unfortunately did not happen. So the wins on the Super-twin, are still a win and I’ll take them for sure. The other highlight of the year has to be the win at the Classic TT. Having not really ridden on the old bikes before, there was no real expectation going into the race and to be honest, nobody really anticipated us getting a result. So there was simply no pressure on us at and that just made it work well. To then come away with the lap record also, was an added bonus.
A high impact crash in the opening race at the North West 200 saw the Fermanagh rider bounce back in the Supertwins race taking a very memorable victory at the famous Northern Irish circuit. In a hard fought scrap for places, the early contender was RST rider
For the North West, perhaps there was some pressure because I’ve always been on the podium when I’ve raced there previously, so people do expect. We posted some impressive times to put the bike on the front row for the six hundred and six-fifty races, so I always knew that I had a strong chance racing there and it’s a circuit that seems to work well for me. Perhaps next year, we will just look to secure some results on the big bikes.
Ivan Linton, but Johnston produced some blistering laps to close on the leader, before making a move at the Juniper Chicane, going on to take the chequered flag. Despite some

contention over the coming together with Alistair Seeley in the Supersport race the twenty-five year old would leave the Northern Irish coast with both Supertwin races to his credit and what he
To be fair, on the outside looking in, it may have appeared to be a disappointing two weeks for the team, but we took a lot of positives away from the island this year. The brake failure quite simply could have happened anywhere. But the most important thing about this years’ TT for me, was that nobody was actually aware of just how injured I was going into the fortnight. So actually making it there was a huge achievement in itself. The crash at the North West 200 really left me feeling quite battered and bruised. From Portrush, I headed home to get some much needed treatment and I was actually laid up in bed for three days. I just could not move, with a badly bruised leg, damaged ribs and just generally aching all over. So there was very little recovery time, before I had to get myself ready for the TT and practice week. Considering I was unable to walk due to the pain only days before, actually getting on a bike and throwing myself down Brey Hill at speed, was quite an accomplishment.
considered to be the highlight of his
racing career. The ‘General’ as he’s
affectionately known then headed
to the Isle of Man TT, where his fortunes were somewhat mixed. Mechanical failure and another close quarter encounter with Australian Josh Brookes would leave both riders discussing the manoeuvre over a pint of smooth at the Creg-Ny-Baa. Johnston had a TT year that he would probably prefer to forget. For those who have had the privilege to meet the Fermanagh rider, you can only be drawn by his infectious
I had not mentioned to anyone just how bad I had been feeling and quite literally had to take it very easy during practice week. If you discuss your injuries, I find it just draws lots of questions from the media guys and puts more pressure on you for the racing. So I kept it very quiet. The only people that knew just how bad I was were the team around me. So this is a bit of

Who can forget an interview with Rob McElnea during this years’ 2014 Classic event. As TT winner McElnea discussed the days racing with presenter Steve Parrish, in thebackdrop of the screen appeared a cigar smoking hippie and
an Irish leprechaun that turned and nodded to the camera. If you didn’t see it, the footage is most certainly worth a look. Oh and by the way, the leprechaun was actually Johnston, with partner in crime, eleven time TT winner Michael Dunlop. Seeking to bounce back

from a disappointing Isle of Man, Dundord was next on the schedule for the Irishman and effectively a home circuit for the Pirtek rider, where Iocal fans hoped both the Sun and Johnston would shine.
The remote seven mile road circuit has always been a favoured event for the Fermanagh ace and he arrived seeking to build on his international successes from the North West 200 earlier in the year. Conditions remained as difficult as ever for all riders involved, with high winds and damp roads, being the order of day. With an ever changing track, tyre selection became something of a lottery for the teams. But the Maguires bridge rider was resilient throughout, finishing third in thE Superbike class, behind race winner Bruce Anstey
an exclusive for you, as I’ve never talked about it before. I was sneaking off quietly to the hyperbaric chamber on the island. Without those guys assisting me that week, the staff at the oxygen chamber and the physiotherapists, I probably could not have raced in all honesty. It’s an incredible team over there and they don’t always get the credit they deserve for getting injured riders back on the bike, so big thanks to them for making my TT happen in 2014. When race week came around, we managed to get a couple of rides under our belt before I wrecked myself again. So it certainly ruined me a little and it was a huge disappointment not being able to compete in the six-fifty class, where I would have had a strong chance of a podium finish or possibly a win. But we were competitive for sure and as for the race that I actually crashed in, we were on course for a top five finish. Obviously disappointing for sure, but the performances were good and we produced some solid lap times in only my second year at the Isle of Man TT. Some people think it is
my third year, but that first year, we did not ride due to mechanical issues. And then if you look at my two years since at the TT, I’ve not been in the best of shape. In 2013, I arrived on the island still recovering from a badly broken leg and then this year I was battered from the crash at the North West and could barely walk only days before race week. So I think the plan next year will have to be to arrive on the island fit and injury free.
RST: WHO BOUGHT WHO A PINT AT THE CREG? I should have bought Josh one for sure [laughs Johnston). But I have to say, that while the problem with the bike forced me to over shoot the corner at
and runner-up Guy Martin. The positions would be reversed in the Supersport race between Johnston and Martin, with Anstey again taking the overall spoils. These impressive results were followed with yet another win in the Supertwins class, taking his tally to three Internationals for the year. Impressive!! Johnstons’ season would reach a climax at the Classic TT, where he would pilot his Black Eagle Racing MV Agusta
to first place in the 350cc race, obliterating the field in the process, setting a new lap record and giving the manufacturer its first win on the island since 1972 with the legendary Giacamo Agostini. Talking exclusively to RST, Johnston tells us about his move into road racing and where it all started. He discusses the odd blokes around the circuit, that little incident at the Creg with Aussie Josh Brookes and how he’s too slow for short circuits. Plus the Irish ace

the Creg, for Josh, he just did not know at that point why I had gone in too hot. It could have looked like I had just got the whole thing wrong being over-ambitious. But he came straight up to me and asked if I was ok. So that is a real measure and class of the rider that Josh Brookes is for sure. He’s so genuine, has done really well coming onto the roads and what happened that day effectively ended a good finish for him, so I was sorry and disappointed that it happened. The sad thing for me personally was the criticism that I received from people who saw us both coming together. There is a picture showing my back wheel about a foot in the air and people said there is no way that he had a brake problem. But anyone knows that in those situations when the brakes have gone, you can grab the lever and pump it like mad, before it comes back, by which point it can be too late. And that’s what happened and some of the negative comments really pissed me off, because that is just not me. I was gutted for Josh and we were not even racing each other as we were ten seconds apart and there was simply no point. It just wouldn’t have made any sense. But those things happen and I
the Mountain section for the first time, it was not right. I thought if I could nurse it home to Glencrutchery Road, I’ll just call time and pull in at the pits. But as I was coming off the Mountain round Kate’s, it just seemed to clear itself and then go like the wind. That was why I was running about sixth at the close of the opening lap. After that first lap, the old girl just came on song and started to fly. She was a real dream to ride and it was a special race for me.
RST: IRISH ROAD RACING IS RATHER UNIQUE. YOU ARE PART OF THIS NEW CROP OF TALENTED YOUNG LOCAL RIDERS WHICH INCLUDES THE DUNLOP’S, JAMIE HAMILTON, DEREK MCGHEE AND MICHAEL SWEENEY TO NAME A FEW. HOW AND WHERE DID IT START FOR LEE JOHNSTON? It probably goes back to 2011 when I was teammates with Gary Johnson in the East Coast Racing outfit. Gary was already competing
As for the other guys like the Dunlops, Robinson and Kennedy, you have memories of them and what they achieved in their careers for sure. Growing up in Northern Ireland and being part of bike racing, you are very aware of their achievements and what they did for the sport. For me, I don’t have one specific memory and perhaps the unfortunate thing is you remember the moment that they passed, as opposed to their earlier racing careers, which is bad. It’s one of those. You know where and what you were doing at the time you found out a racing legend like Joey had passed away. They were all great riders and will always remain as an important part of the history in the sport. As kids, my Dad used to take us to the races and I remember going to Silverstone and Donington to watch World Superbikes and seeing my heroes race. Riders like Neil Hodgson, of which my Dad and I thought was an absolute legend. Now these guys, people like Neil, come into my garage to ask how I am doing, which is incredible!! For my Dad, he just looks absolutely stunned, thinking these are all the great men that we were watching back in the day. Some of them are perhaps a little old for me to even remember, but my Dad knows and it’s just quite special, when they are in the garage talking with us. I now stay with Neil Hodgson at his house during the Classic TT, which is still quite surreal to be honest. If someone has said that to me when I was nine or ten, that I would be mates with Neil and staying at his pad on the island, you would just never have dreamed it. Then there are guys like John McGuinness and everyone knows what he has achieved in the sport. So when I now go and watch the speedway with him, I say to him quite openly that he needs to realise that I look at him, in the same way that he used to admire Joey Dunlop. So it is a rather strange feeling for me when I’m with John as a mate having a craic, realising just how much I look up to someone of his calibre and person.
RST: THE DUNLOP DYNASTY CONTINUES TODAY WITH WILLIAM AND MICHAEL, TWO SPECIAL AND EXCEPTIONALLY TALENTED RIDERS OF THEIR GENERATION. FOR MICHAEL, WITH ELEVEN TT WINS TO HIS CREDIT AND STILL ONLY TWENTY-FIVE, THE POTENTIAL IS INCREDIBLE. HOW WOULD YOU RATE HIM BOTH AS A RIDER AND CLOSE FRIEND?
have massive respect for Josh as a fellow competitor and friend.
RST: THE CLASSIC TT IS SOMETHING OF A MORE RELAXED EVENT FOR BOTH FANS AND RIDERS, BUT THE RACING IS QUITE SERIOUS AND REFLECTS IN THE TIMES AND LAP RECORDS THAT RIDERS ARE BEING RECORDED. THE 350CC VICTORY MUST HAVE BEEN SWEET FOR YOU. DID YOU EXPECT TO BE SO COMPETITIVE? Not really to be honest. As I said before, there was no pressure. But at the same time, I did not really know what to expect on the classic bike. During practice week, I played a few rounds of golf with William (Dunlop) and I asked him what you needed to do to win the 350cc race. Bearing in mind that I had only ran a couple of laps of the course, because I had to return home for a couple of days to work. So two laps on the MV and I had posted about a 99mph average, which I thought could be quite reasonable. Then William outlined that I would need to produce at least three 102-103mph average laps to be in with a chance. I thought that would be impossible based upon what we had done so far. That was in my mind before the start and I thought to myself, if we can just notch it up slightly, I could possibly get third behind William, who I was sure would win, with Michael in second. When the race started, I was almost certain that it was over for me on the first lap when the bike started missing. The tank had not been filled too much, so it wasn’t pressurising the carbs which caused the problem. Having not ridden on the old bikes before, I just assumed that something was really wrong and considered the best plan would be to retire from the race. Going over

on the roads and that was the first year he won at the Isle of Man TT. There was always a great deal of talk about road racing in the garage and just generally around the team, so I listened. At the time, I was competing in the Supersport class on the short circuits in BSB. I suppose it was those conversations that started to grab my attention and ultimately get me interested. So I decided to go to the North West 200 and had an absolute ball. The whole atmosphere around the roads was fantastic. I got to ride a bike very fast, had a few beers in the evening, mixed with fans that are so passionate about their racing, and generally had a great craic with the boys I was competing against. I think it is so important to have some fun around the racing and then if you have an opportunity to ride a bike at almost 200mph, what more could you want in my opinion.
RST: THE FABRIC OF ROAD RACING STARTED IN BALLYMONEY WITH THE LIKES OF JOEY, ROBERT, MERVYN ROBINSON AND FRANK KENNEDY. WHAT WAS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY OF THESE SPORTING ICONS? As I said, going into road racing was something that I had not really considered until 2011 with the East Coast Racing team. Prior to that and coming from where I did in Ireland, it’s just part of growing up. My hero was always Richard Britton. He lived close to me, so growing up was about watching him and it’s just a way of life for us in Ireland. I liked the fact that he was also good on the short circuits, but he was an out and out road racer by trade. My family knew Richard personally and the unfortunate thing is that he passed away before I started my career on the roads. I wish he had been around today to have seen me racing at places like Ulster and the North West. Richard raced bikes very well, had a good craic with the boys and enjoyed it. That was what I wanted.
You cannot take anything away from Michael and what he has achieved, especially at the TT. He has really set a benchmark for us all. He took a bike to the TT this year that has not been there before, was relatively untested around the circuit and some seventy five years after BMW had their last win on the island. He did it in his first competitive run on the bike and places it on the top step with a win. He’s great guy, good friend and as much as it grinds me to give him a compliment (laughs Johnston), you just cannot take it away from him. But at the end of the day, you still want to beat him and the more he wins, the more I want to beat him. And that is not just from me. There are ten other guys out there who are trying to beat Michael on the bike and I would say that road racing is as hard as it ever was. So full respect to the kid for sure. He’s on good bikes, has nothing really holding him back and Michael is one rider who is prepared to ride very hard. So if you’re going to beat him, without a doubt you will need to be on top of your game.
RST: YOU HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH THE DUNLOP BROTHERS. MICHAEL DOES SEEM TO BE YOUR COMEDY ASSOCIATE WHEN IT COMES TO THE CRAIC AROUND THE PADDOCK? WHO COMES UP WITH THE PLANS? It’s all about enjoying yourself, as well as the racing. Those boys are a good craic and I think it is important to just have a laugh to keep your mind away from the business end. There is never really any plans for some of the pranks we play, it just happens. I have to say that I think we get on so well because we’re both really odd people (laughs Johnston). I’d also put William in that category as well. With Michael, we were in the same team at the Classic, so you’re bound to have the craic around the paddock because we’re working more closely. As for the little stunt on screen at the Classic TT, the outfits were chosen by Michael (Dunlop) and Paul (Phillips), so I had no choice in the matter. But I’m still wondering why I was the one who had to wear the leprechaun costume, because there is just no resemblance whatsoever (laughs Johnston). It’s not like I’m small or anything.

RST: WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOU WERE A ROAD RACER OR A SHORT CIRCUIT RIDER? Tough one. I’m probably too slow for short circuit racing and not brave enough for the roads. Does that answer your question?
Racing. Phil has looked after me so much throughout my racing career. When I look back three years ago, I was pretty much on the bare bones of my arse and Phil took me to where I am today, giving me incredible opportunities along the way. The man has been so incredibly supportive and I am grateful for the support he has given to me personally. So it would have to be my Dad first and
RST: THE ISLE OF MAN TT IS A SPECIAL EVENT FOR ANY RIDER. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST EVER TT EXPERIENCE? I had never actually been over to the island to watch the TT before I raced. The first experience was in 2012 with my old team boss who bought a new car and we decided to go across and get some laps around the course. The end result was that we blew the car up after two days driving over the Mountain like lunatics. I just racked up there ready to race and I had not actually told my Dad that I was going until the deal was complete and I knew I would be taking part. My thinking was that if he knew in advance, he may be able to stop me from going, so I thought it would be better to get everything in place and just tell him before I was about to leave. Let’s just say that when I told him, he was far from impressed or happy. But he knew he had to let me go at that point and just do what I wanted to do. There was a caveat however and we put an agreement in place, a I must stick with now.
type of family rule that The deal was that I
was allowed to do a certain number of races each year. So the TT, North West, Ulster, Macau and Scarborough are the only races that I will do and it is something I will stick with no matter what, to respect the wishes of my family. Each year I get asked by so many event organisers to race on their circuits. The Southern, Armoy, Skerries, you name it and they have all asked. But I’ve made a promise, so that’s the end of it and I will stick with those five events only.
foremost, for giving me that initial step and then Phil for taking it on further still. For riders, I would have to say that would be John (McGuinness). He does not have to help me with advice and support, but it’s just a measure of the man and his character. He’s not won twenty-one TT’s for nothing. John knows how much respect that I have for him, so when you have someone of his calibre in the corner, advising and supporting you it’s quite special and really appreciated. A fantastic guy, even though he might need to lay off the cream cakes and all day breakfasts (he laughs). Make sure you print that one for me.
RST: WOULD YOU HAVE ONE PARTICULAR EVENT ON THE RACING CALENDAR EACH YEAR THAT YOU WOULD COMFORTABLY SAY IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND WHY?
RST: WHO HAVE YOU MOST ADMIRED OR LOOKED UP TO IN TERMS OF ROAD RACING? PAST OR PRESENT, WHICH INDIVIDUAL HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE? AND WHO HAS BEEN YOUR MOST SUPPORTIVE?
Absolutely no question whatsoever, it has to be the Ulster Grand Prix. I just love the place, the fans, the racing and the circuit is just something quite amazing. If I had my way, I would race there five times a year if I could. Normally when you go to a new circuit for the first time, you are a little wary, not knowing the corners, braking markers and speeds. But I can say, when I first rode round the Dundrod circuit, I just thought to myself this is absolutely incredible. The flowing nature of the course, flat out on the straits, you can’t help but fall in love with the place. Absolutely no question in my mind, it has to be Ulster. And to some extent that would also be my home circuit, so you get the added support from the fans and they really show their appreciation for what you’re doing on track, which is really nice. Love the place!!!
That would have to be between my Dad and Phil Reed at East Coast
RST: THE EAST COAST CONSTRUCTION PIRTEK

TEAM HAS EVOLVED TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST DISTINGUISHED OUTFITS IN THE ROAD RACING PADDOCK. HOW HAS THAT BEEN FOR YOU THIS YEAR? It’s been absolutely fantastic and the team is very close. I have a great bunch of guys around me and we all get along, working well as a team, which is so important. We’ll go and have a beer together, have a craic and it works well. That is why it would be very hard for me to go elsewhere. Hopefully Pirtek will stay on board for next year and we can have another good year. I’m very happy with the team and there is a great dynamic, which will only get better in time.
RST: ARE YOU STILL LEARNING AT THE TT? For sure and I don’t think you ever stop learning on the island. Take the Classic TT this year for example. I was able to absorb so much more around the thirty-seven mile circuit because you’re riding on much slower bikes. It was so valuable for my own development and I discovered things about the course that I had never known before. But I suppose that when you look at someone of the calibre of John (McGuinness), I suppose I know nothing. Certainly I think you’re constantly learning and evolving, each and every year you’re on the island.
RST: DO YOU HAVE ANY PREFERRED SECTIONS OF THE THIRTY-SEVEN AND THREE QUARTER MILE CIRCUIT? ALSO ARE THERE ANY LEAST FAVOURITE PARTS? For me, the favourite part has always been the Mountain section. I just love going over there and as you get to the top, you see the view down to Douglas knowing that you’ve completed another lap. Every section across the Mountain is special, from Guthries, to Joey’s and the Verandah. All really fast flowing sectors that just appeal to any road racer. Quite simply there is nowhere like it anywhere. To be honest, I don’t know too many of the names around the course. So if I was going to say my least favourite sections, there can be some really bumpy areas, which are a real pain
in the arse for me because I’m so small. It can be something of a struggle just holding onto the bike and I do find some sections far from pleasant, especially on the bigger bikes.
RST: HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A RACE LIKE THE TT? JUST BEFORE YOU LAUNCH YOURSELF DOWN BREY HILL OR PERHAPS SCRAP FOR POSITION AT 180MPH DOWN THE FLYING KILO AT ULSTER? ARE THERE ANY SINGLE PREPARATIONS THAT YOU UNDERTAKE? DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC?
AND MORE. THEN I LOVE MY MOTO-X AND JUST GENERALLY MESSING AROUND ON THE BIKES, WHICH IS A GREAT WAY TO KEEP IN SHAPE. I’VE ALSO FOUND A NEW PASSION WITH SPEEDWAY AND HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET SOME LAPS IN WITH SOME TOP SPEEDWAY RIDERS SOON. SO THAT COULD BE A NEW THING FOR ME IF I DON’T WRECK MYSELF. I’M KEEPING IT VERY QUIET THOUGH, SO NO CAMERAS OR ANYTHING. I’VE EVEN TOLD JOHN (MCGUINNESS) THAT HE CANNOT GO.
RST: WHAT WOULD BE THE FUTURE GOALS FOR LEE JOHNSTON? Without a doubt, it has to be a win a TT.
RST: WHEN?
RST: HOW DO YOU RELAX AWAY FROM THE RACING AND THE BIKE?
I’m quite lucky in so far as I don’t get nervous before a race, so I don’t really need anything to take my mind off the racing or what I am about to do. Having a good team around you makes a whole world of difference and before a race, we just relax, have a laugh and that’s all I need. there is no point getting excited before you launch yourself down Glencrutchery Road and Brey Hill, There are a fair few miles ahead of you, so don’t get too alive or uptight before the TT that’s for sure.
Before I’m fifty (laughs Johnston). Yep, if I can win a TT before I’m fifty that will be quite sweet. Also I think it is now time that I start to get more wins on the Superbike. So far on the big bikes, I’ve been there or thereabouts. On the podium a
I would say that I’m quite lucky to have the mates that I have, who have grown up with me and have no connection with bikes. None of them are into bike racing, so that’s great, as it means they don’t ask me about what’s going on and we just have a laugh together. I’d probably say I’m quite boring off the bike, but I like it that way and have a good bunch of friends who just do normal things and have fun.
RST: SO WHAT CAN WE EXPECT IN 2015 AND HAVE YOU SET ANY PRE-SEASON GOALS? WHAT WOULD YOU HOPE TO COME AWAY WITH NEXT YEAR?
RST: MOTORCYCLING DEMANDS HIGH LEVELS OF FITNESS FOR RIDERS. HOW DO YOU KEEP FIT AND WHAT ARE YOUR ROUTINES?
RST: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A RIDER CONTEMPLATING THE TT OR THE ROAD RACING FOR THE FIRST TIME?
Do you mean the nocturnal kind of fitness routines (laughs Johnston)?
(Johnston laughs loudly) Go and speak with Peter Hickman for sure!!
RST: DOES THAT MEAN YOU HAVE SOME PERSONAL TRAINERS THEN? FOR SURE!! ABOUT THREE OR FOUR AT THE MOMENT WHO REGULARLY HELP WITH MY FITNESS (HE LAUGHS). WELL WHY NOT. I’M SURE IT HELPS WITH STAMINA. YOU HAVE TO DON’T YOU? TO BE HONEST, I DO TRY AND KEEP VERY FIT OFF THE BIKE. I REALLY ENJOY MY CYCLING AND THAT’S WHERE I’VE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE RACING FOR RST AND WITH THEIR CYCLING TEAM. THAT HAS BEEN A GREAT ASPECT TO MY FITNESS ROUTINE, WITH A BIG THANKS TO THE GUYS AT RST’S CYCLE DIVISION AND ESPECIALLY JOHNNY TOWERS. FOR SURE, CYCLING IS VERY IMPORTANT AND I’M REALLY GETTING INTO IT MORE
Because that guy has got the whole things sussed. It has been absolutely unbelievable what he has done this year on his first roads season. Pete is one rider who has taken the transition onto the roads and delivered it with absolute class and precision. Full respect to the big guy. But if you’re contemplating the roads and no doubt the Isle of Man TT, for any young rider, my advice would undoubtedly be to go and see Richard ‘Milky’ Quayle. That guy is absolutely awesome, he has so much knowledge and enthusiasm for the TT it’s just incredible. The support that you receive from all the team at the TT, with Milky and Paul Phillips, they will ensure that you are given everything you possibly need to race on the island. it just shows how it’s grown to become so successful, when you have guys like Milky and Paul behind it.
Money, women and trophies (exclaims Johnston laughing). Yep, if I can get those next year, I’ll be a very happy Irishman. Actually, perhaps not in that order if I think about it. It would have to be trophies, money and women. If that happens next year, it will be an alright year for Lee Johnston in 2015. Form an orderly queue ladies!!
RST: THANKS LEE, IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE AS ALWAYS.

RST MOTORCYCLE RACER MURRAY HAMBRO IS UNIQUE, WITH A CHAPTER OF HIS LIFE BORNE OUT OF A PREVIOUS CAREER AS A SOLDIER FIGHTING ON THE BATTLEFIELDS OF AFGHANISTAN... News stories fill our screens daily and images direct from the frontline show these brave servicemen and women, who follow their duties with pride, serving Queen and country in the interests of protecting democracy and civil virtues. With this obligation however, there is a cost and some sadly pay the ultimate price. For others, the physical and mental scars can last a lifetime. For Hambro, a former Lance Corporal with the Second Royal Tank Regiment, that sacrifice came on 9th December 2010. While operating supply runs for the Parachute Regiment, a group of Taliban insurgents were alerted to the activity, planting a sixty five kilogram improvised explosive device (IED) in the path of Hambro and his colleagues. As the vehicle made contact with the bomb, the sheer impact of the blast launched Hambro some forty feet into the air. He suffered appalling injuries as a consequence of the detonation and the event would immeasurably change the course of his life. Within forty-eight hours of the explosion, Hambro had both feet amputated and would began his biggest challenge facing a long journey of recovery and rehabilitation. But it would also be a road that would ultimately steer Hambro towards the motorcycle race tracks and the MCE Insurance British Superbike series.
RST: TELL US ABOUT THAT FATEFUL DAY MURRAY? It was on the 9th December 2010, while I was on operations in Afghanistan. The vehicle that I was travelling in triggered a pressure point IED (Improvised Explosive Device). Like I’ve said so many times, this is where I probably did my best ever impression of Superman, as I was launched forty feet into the air, before coming down with a tremendous thud on the dusty desert terrain. The injuries were so extensive and there was a long list of them to be precise. Ranging from broken bones, including six vertebrae, a shattered pelvis and obviously my feet which has just been destroyed so severely from the blast. I’ve always said the worst one has to be the scar on my nose [laughs Hambro], but in all seriousness, it was a tough one. I was aware of everything that was going on around me after the initial explosion, with the noise and the dust which you could taste in the mouth. One of my colleagues from the platoon raced over to check me and I just asked what had happened, to which he responded by saying “you’ve been blown up mate”. The guys then tried to make me as comfortable as possible before preparing you for immediate evacuation. What made the situation worse and perhaps more difficult for them was the fact that the Taliban knew they had disabled the convoy and started to open fire with guns, rockets and grenades. Eventually with back-up support, I was loaded onto a Chinook and taken to Camp Bastion for treatment. The medics had started stabbing me with all sorts of pain killers, so it did start to go a little hazy. I did not know the severity of the injuries at that point. I could see that I had all my limbs intact, but the reality check came when they lifted me onto the stretcher and my feet literally slumped and pointed towards the floor. So I had an idea that perhaps things were not too good and it was quite

with Phil Spencer. We talked and obviously I told him about my story and what happened in Afghanistan with the explosion and subsequent loss of my limbs. Phil went away and the reality was that he was more uncomfortable with me riding on the roads doing thirty or forty miles per hour. He decided on the concept of True Heroes Racing, with me racing at one hundred and sixty miles per hour instead [laughs Hambro]. So it’s all down to him really and obviously an opportunity that I just wanted to take without question or hesitation. And I think between us, we have taken the whole concept and philosophy behind the team, with the aim of growing it much further. While we initially started with some club racing, it simply grew and the exposure that the British Superbike Series provides to us as a team and our sponsors has just been so significant. I think that what we have is incredibly unique and very different from what you will see with every other team across the British Superbike paddock. True Heroes Racing is a team that has taken injured service personnel and puts them in a scenario that is about rehabilitation through racing. Hedley Court is obviously the first port of call for any injured serviceman or woman and they are the best that they can be, helping soldiers back on the road to recovery after suffering injuries on the battlefield. It was a huge part for me and vital in the support I received after my accident. But when you’re not in the caring hands of the staff at Hedley Court, that is when you can very much find yourself alone, staring at the four walls thinking about everything and all too often, people can find themselves in a very dark place. It affects so
serious. The medics on the base do what they can with the resources available, assessing the severity of the injuries and then again ensuring you’re as comfortable as you can be for a flight home to the UK. Within twenty-four hours I was back on home soil at a hospital in Birmingham. There were immediate x-rays on the injuries, most notably my feet and the specialists came back quickly to say that I should have both of my feet removed through amputation. I remember the surgeon who would perform the operation asked me about my hobbies and I told him that I enjoy riding motorcycles. You can imagine that he quickly advised me that I should find a new way to pass the time. But I thought that would be one of my first goals and I was determined to do it despite the card that I had been dealt. So within thirty-six hours of the explosion, I was a double amputee. But three months after the operation to remove my feet, I took my first tentative steps and within a month of that, I was in a showroom buying a Triumph Daytona and riding on the road. I had started getting myself fit again, was able to do some running, which was quite amazing. Above it all, I was back riding on the bikes. So within six months I had actually achieved all of my goals, which is something I’m very proud to say and something that many considered far from possible.
RST: HOW DID YOU MODIFY THE BIKE TO ACCOUNT FOR THE DISABILITY? It was quite funny actually. We stood in the showroom admiring the bike and in all honesty I had no idea whatsoever how we would change and adapt the bike. There were a few perplexed faces as we all stood in the Triumph dealership scratching our heads and drinking coffee. We simply had no idea and started checking the internet on our phones to see what options were available. The thumb brake was actually the easiest change we could apply and it’s relatively simple. The main challenge we thought would be the gear change, but in reality that too did not present too many problems. Luckily the ‘Clicktronic’ gear change system had come onto the market, which was an electronic button shift system. So we were able to adapt the bike quite easily and get me riding with relative ease.
RST: AFTER SUFFERING SUCH HORRIFIC INJURIES, FEW WOULD EVEN CONTEMPLATE RACING ON THE BRITISH SUPERBIKE CIRCUITS. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO DO IT? Racing was never really an option and not something that I had ever considered. My goal was simply to get back on a bike and riding on the roads, nothing more. Not once did I think I would be racing on circuits like OULTON PARK AND SILVERSTONE. IT ALL CAME about when I was offered a hospitality day down at Thruxton for the British Superbike Series and I was fortunate enough to meet

many injured service personnel and depression can be a major factor following any trauma. So what True Heroes Racing enables you to do it escape for a weekend and do something that you never contemplated you would do. So whether it is picking up some spanners and working on the bikes or ultimately getting people riding and racing bikes.
RST: DID YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THESE DARK PLACES FOLLOWING THE ACCIDENT? No I didn’t in all fairness, but know a lot of people who did. Anyone that knows me understands that I am a very active, full on individual and I always find myself doing things. So following the incident where I lost my limbs, whether it was learning to walk, getting to ride a motorbike again, planning for a wedding which took place the following August after the accident, then moving house, new baby arriving or racing on the BSB circuits, there have always been lots of things to occupy my mind. I think that is how I have coped because I’m always active and doing things.
RST: WHERE DID YOUR LOVE OF MOTORCYCLES BEGIN? It all started when I was in single figures, probably about the age of eight or nine. One of my friends had a little 350cc Itailjet motorcycle and I ended up riding that around and wanting my own bike. So I pressurised my parents and eventually my Mum went out and bought me one. That was it really, just getting out in fields, not competing
or anything, just having fun. That just fuelled my love for riding bikes. I’ve always enjoyed watching grass track racing and then that steadily progressed to British Superbikes and circuit racing.
RST: WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOTORCYCLE RACER AND WHY? That is just so difficult to answer. There are just so many riders that are exceptional talents, who ride a bike so well. If you take the roads for example, which I admire and respect so much, individuals such as John McGuinness, Bruce Anstey and Guy Martin are all masters at what they do. Then on the short circuits, to me it was people like Kevin Scwantz, Carl Fogarty and then the guys like Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne, who has just taken his fourth BSB title. So many riders to choose from across the sport.
RST: WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION COME FROM? It’s probably not where you think in terms of the bike racing. When I was sent to Hedley Court for my rehabilitation, I went thinking that there would be nobody in a worse position than me, with injuries similar to mine and going through what I was faced with having just become a double amputee. And as soon as I arrived there, my eyes were well and truly opened. You have double amputees through the hip, triple amputees and guys with just the most horrendous scars
and facial wounds that you could ever imagine. Seeing that it just really made me view matters in a very different way and take stock of my own situation. All of a sudden, it put me back in my place, just seeing these brave people and what they were going through. Individuals who had been used to walking throughout the whole of their lives, and watching them now take those first steps on a very long road to recovery. It is certainly where I take my inspiration, because no matter how bad your own situation or position, there is always someone who is worse off than you. I saw that first hand. I spent a lot of time at Hedley Court following the explosion, probably eighteen months to two years and it really made me think. For me, it was four weeks at Hedley and then four weeks off. You will spend as much time there until that point where they feel you have reached the optimum level you can achieve as a result of your injuries and circumstances. Obviously I was no longer able to serve in the armed forces and received my medical discharge from the regiment in April 2013. A lot of the team at Hedley Court still follow my progress with the racing, certainly my consultant and physiotherapist still keep in touch to find out how I am progressing, which is nice and I hope they are proud to see the progress of the team.
RST: HOW DO YOUR FELLOW COMPETITORS TREAT YOU IN THE PADDOCK AND ON THE CIRCUIT? Everyone has been really supportive since we started True Heroes Racing. There are regular visitors to our garage who drop in for a brew, just wanting to see how we’re getting on. That support and encouragement has been exceptional. As a team we have been made to feel very welcome around the paddock and I believe that a lot of people respect what we do, the vision of the team and where we have come from to get there. As for on the track, it all comes down to the racing and at the end of the day we’re all competing for the same piece of tarmac on the track. Some riders undoubtedly come close, or may sit you up into a corner, but that’s why we do it and it’s half the excitement. As long as it’s not too harsh a move, I’m not really phased by anything to be honest and just enjoy the buzz that racing has given me.
RST: YOUR CARRY THE WORD ‘LEGLESS’ ON YOUR RST LEATHERS. SQUADDIE HUMOUR? Most certainly it is the squaddie humour!!! [laughs Hambro]. Again, it all stems back to Hedley Court. A lot of the guys had their own unique way of reflecting upon their injuries. So number plates on cars were always a classic, with things like ‘N8 legs’ ‘1 leg’ and my own number plate on my car spells out ‘No feet’. It’s just part of the army spirit.
RST: YOU’VE HAD A FEW MOMENTS ON TRACK OVER THE PAST FEW SEASONS. IS THERE A LAUNCH CONTROL FOR SPEEDY RELEASE FROM THE BIKE WHEN YOU NEED TO BAIL OUT QUICKLY? Again it’s just part and parcel of the racing. I’m not fixed to the bike in any way, so I experience all the same forces and problems as the able bodied guys in the race, in the event that it all goes wrong on track. I’ve experienced it all while I’ve been racing, from high sides to low sides. When you’ve got to jump, you instinctively know what you have to do and it comes down to how you land. Then for me, it’s all about how quickly I can remove myself from the track. I’ve had to prove and demonstrate that I can do that to the race organisers MSV (Motorsportvision) and the other competitors on the track.
RST: TELL US ABOUT THE MODIFICATIONS THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR YOUR BIKE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO COMPETE ON THE TRACK? It’s all fairly simple really. There is a bolt on the peg of the bike and we drill a hole through the boot which allows it to just slide through to give it some stability. I’m not actually fixed to the bike in any way and I can
149
WWW.RST-MOTO.COM
just lift the boot if required. The most difficult thing for me is actually locating the peg, so that is where the guys have to help me. So other than the bolts that are added to allow my feet to engage the pegs on the bike, I also have a rear thumb brake underneath the clutch and an electronic system for changing gear. So very few changes other than what you would get if you just bought a bike from the showroom.
RST: THERE HAS BEEN A SUGGESTION IN THE PAST THAT YOU MAY LOOK TO EXPAND YOUR MOTORCYCLE RACING FURTHER WITH A RUN AT THE ISLE OF MAN TT. IS THAT STILL A POSSIBILITY? I would never say never [laughs Hambro]. It is and has to be one of the greatest circuits, or well I would probably go as far to say that it is the greatest, most spectacular race in the world. It is certainly the most iconic motorcycle race, with the history and just the special nature of the event. To be a part of the Isle of Man TT would be very special for me. Even if I could just take part in a parade lap, would be a dream come true. Only last night, we were all watching Guy Martin’s Speed and his involvement at Pikes Peak. This got all the guys talking about what we could possibly do and to be honest, we would never rule it out as a team. I’m not saying anything would ever come of it, as it would all be dependent upon sponsorship and funding, but who knows what could happen. I do watch a lot of road racing and unfortunately the schedules have always coincided with the main events like the North West 200 and the Isle of Man, so for me I have to just keep up with it on the television and DVD’s. Let’s just watch this space and see what can happen for the future.
see what I mean (See the full video on the RST website https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=M97vR2V4vTs). There are obviously a lot of parallels between the Kurt Yaeger story and that of my own. I listen to the music and it certainly gives me that lift and energy that I need to realise where I have been personally and how I have come back from the accident to achieve what I have today. That song and the video is something that I relate to very much, where you have something taken away from you, working back up and then achieving your goals at the end. Very powerful stuff and worth a watch if you’ve not seen it already.
RST: WHAT ABOUT FITNESS? Fitness is extremely important and something that I take very seriously. You have to be fit to do what we are doing. Many people say that it must be easy. You’re just hanging onto the bike and riding it round a circuit. But when you’re racing for twenty to forty minutes, going hell bent on a race prepared motorcycle, the physical demands are high and to be honest, it’s bloody hard work. So I train as much as I can. With my running, I’ll average about ten kilometres per run, about thirty miles of cycling and I do the cross fit training sessions also. So I train very hard. But whenever I train, there can be a knock on effect with my legs. Two weeks hard training, usually means that I have to take a week off because I get sores or cracked skin from the prosthetics. So that can be hard. But in a week, it tends to be cycle, followed by a run, then a day of cross fit. I’ll repeat that across the week, so six days of training, which means I’m averaging at least twelve miles of running each week and about sixty miles on the bike.
RST: TRUE HEROES RACING HAS GAINED SUCH A FOLLOWING SINCE THE TEAMS’ INCEPTION IN 2012. HOW DO THE FANS REACT TO YOUR INSPIRED STORY?
RST: IF YOU COULD OWN ONE DREAM BIKE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
It has all been really positive and we receive an incredible amount of support from everyone. There are so many motorcycle fans who just pop in for a brew and ask what we are doing, how it all works and want to know more about the philosophy behind True Heroes Racing. Sometimes I have to go on Afghan repeat sometimes, telling the story, but it is very important and people want to know how the idea for the team was created and what we have all been through to get there. So for me, I enjoy talking about it all and hopefully it means that more people follow our progress around the BSB circuits.
My favourite bike has always been the Ducati 916, but I would never own one. I believe they always say, never buy your dream bike. Is that true? So I’ve never gone out of my way to buy a 916, but for sure, I think they are such a beautiful machine and will always be my favourite bike for sure. If I were to choose one other, apart from the Ducati, it would have to be one of the modern day Norton’s. Something like the Domiracer. Just a cool looking bike and such an iconic name in motorcycle racing, it’s good to see them back on the market and you have to admit they look pretty cool.
RST: ARE YOU STILL IN CONTACTS WITH YOUR OLD REGIMENT AND DO THEY FOLLOW THE EXPLOITS OF MURRAY HAMBRO ON THE TRACK?
RST: WHAT ARE YOUR RACING AMBITIONS FOR THE FUTURE?
For sure, a lot of the guys follow what we do very closely and some of my former colleagues from the army are keen to see how we are doing as a team. Thruxton is a great circuit, as it is very near to Salisbury Barracks, so we tend to get a lot of the guys coming to that race to see us. I’m certainly still on contact with some of the guys and it’s nice to know that a lot of them are watching us.
RST: AWAY FROM THE TRACK, HOW DO YOU RELAX? Relax!!! [laughs Hambro]. That is probably half the trouble as I just don’t have any time to relax if I’m being honest. I have always tried to keep myself very busy. I’m an active person, so when I’m not pottering around with the bikes, I train a great deal to keep physically fit. The training is very important and it also sends a message that I take it very seriously and as much as the other guys. It’s not just a gimmick and I am actually trying to do the best that I can and give it my best efforts. Obviously I have a very strong and supportive family and that time is very important to me also.
RST: ARE THERE ANY PRE-RACE PREPARATIONS AND ROUTINES? I suppose there are a few routines, but nothing too serious. I always put my left leg over the bike first and similarly, always my left glove before my right. But the one thing that I always do before any race or practice is listen to ‘Rudiemental’ and ‘Waiting for ya all night long’ with the inspired story of Kurt Yaeger, the BMX rider. If you’ve not seen the video, you should take a look to
150
We’re looking at the Tri-Options for next year to see how we progress as a team and where it could potentially lead. Obviously for me, I want to keep riding for as long as I can. Age obviously plays a part and that can go against you over time. If I could ever get on the grid for the British Superbikes, that would just be phenomenal. But then again, if you look at guys like Bruce Anstey, McGuinness, Shane Byrne and Chris Walker, age is certainly not holding them back in any way shape or form. Walker has just produced one of his best seasons in racing. So if I can just keep going for as long as I can and see where it leads, I’ll be happy.
RST: WHAT WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE GOAL FOR THE TEAM? If we could ever run a team in British Superbikes, that would be incredible. I think if we are being realistic, perhaps that would probably not be with an injured serviceman riding the bike if we are to be seriously competitive. Or perhaps it could be, who knows. But if we could have something similar to the RAF Reserves, running a team, with former service personnel, working on the bikes with the True Heroes Racing philosophy flowing through, that would be something special. And then maybe even take the concept to the roads. Let’s just see what the future holds.
RST: THANK YOU MURRAY FOR SUCH AN INSPIRATIONAL ACCOUNT AND THE BEST OF LUCK IN 2015!

2015 IS A SPECIAL YEAR FOR RST, IT MARKS A TRUE MILESTONE IN OUR STORY. RST IS INCREDIBLY PROUD TO BE A TRUE BRITISH SUCCESS STORY, STARTING FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS WITH A SMALL RANGE OF GLOVES... ...with a small range of gloves to now being the UK’s no 1 motorcycle clothing brand (and a growing cycle clothing brand too!) Racing has been at the heart of RST’s DNA from the very beginning, we wanted to offer a high specification, high value range of racing apparel and that core strategy remains the same. We’re immensely proud to have world champions like Andrew Pitt as brand ambassadors and we retain the services of a large number of highly experienced ex-racers to help us improve and develop our range of products. We also support a lot of riders in the British Superbikes, and other domestic championships. Increasingly, and becoming more important to RST, we’ve been supporting riders competing at the various road races the UK, Ireland and the Isle of Man is famous for. This brings us on to a new partnership that RST is hugely proud of; that is becoming the Official Safety Partner for the Isle of Man TT. We have already been supporting the burgeoning Classic TT for the last two years, and now we have added being both the

Official Safety Partner and title sponsor of the RST Superbike Race (to be held on Saturday the 6th June) for 2015 and beyond. Partnering such a world famous and prestigious event as the Isle of Man TT is testament to the high regard RST is held in, and will offer huge kudos as we expand around the world. If you haven’t been to the TT it’s difficult to describe the atmosphere and feeling when you arrive on the island for the start of the TT fortnight. A mixture of apprehension, excitement and anticipation are all blown away the first time you see a bike and its rider blast down Bray Hill, replaced by an overwhelming sense of awe.
place, you’ll find no passes or VIP areas here, you can wander round to your hearts content, taking in the atmosphere and watching the mechanics preparing the bikes to the highest level. You’ll undoubtedly bump into any number of riders here too! A visit to the TT is a must for any motorcycle enthusiast, but if you can’t make it this year, be sure to keep up to date with RST though our website and social media platforms as we try and give you a taste if what it’s like to be at the TT in 2015.
The 37.7 mile course with over 200 corners is unlike any other circuit in the world, with a maximum elevation of 1385ft. The weather has a dramatic effect on the course, as does the fact the roads are used by the general public in-between the races. These facts demand a special breed of rider, not racing just each other but racing the course itself. The paddock too is a special

What many riders do not do is visually inspect their tyres. Whilst riding, the tyres could’ve picked up a foreign object that has penetrated the carcass of the tyre, causing a slow puncture or unseen internal damage so whilst cleaning, spin the wheels round and have a look at the surface area of the tyres. If you find something don’t take the risk and ride it, take it to your local Bridgestone Bikers Club dealer and have it inspected.
Check your tyre pressures at least once a week on a cold tyre. It’s the air in the tyre that supports the motorcycle, not the tyre, so if the pressures are too low, then when you go over things like pot holes and cat eyes you could be causing internal damage to the carcass of the tyre. As it is internal, you won’t be able to see it and the results can be catastrophic. Not to mention you are compromising the handling of the machine with incorrect pressures.

STORING YOUR BIKE OVER WINTER
Tyres can have variances in size and that is nothing to do
TRACK PRESSURES Using your motorcycle on a racing track causes more heat to be generated in the tyre, which in turn generates a higher pressure. road pressures are usually around 36 psi front and 42 rear, if you were to use those pressures you will go over your maximum psi. so it is important to lower the pressures in your tyre to the recommended track day pressure. lower pressures will also create a wider contact patch, therefore also improving grip levels. if you are unsure then check your pressures with the manufacturer beforehand but do not use the track pressures on the road. be sure to re-inflate to the recommended road pressures and invest in a quality pressure gauge for your toolkit.
156
Raise it off the ground and put it on paddock stands front and rear. The main reason is garages have concrete floors, which over winter will become very cold. Leaving your bike on that type of surface will damage the compound of the tyre over a period of four to five months of storage. When you get your bike out in February/ March there could be cracks appearing on the compound or in the grooves of the tyre. If you don’t have a paddock stand then put it on carpet or plastic flooring, but make sure you check the rubber on a regular basis as it could lose 20 psi, which will then put extra weight on the carcass. If it has lost pressure, then re-inflate to the manufacturers usual recommendations. If, when you start using your bike again and you’re not sure, take your bike to a Bridgestone Bikers Club dealer. Check www. bridgestone.co.uk/moto for your nearest approved dealer.

WE ARE PROUD TO INTRODUCE A FANTASTIC NEW RIDER INTO THE RST TEAM FOR 2015. ALEX LOWES. HAVING A RIDER OF ALEX’S CALIBER WEARING RST (AND WORKING WITH US ON DEVELOPING OUR PRO SERIES SUITS) MAKES US REALLY PROUD.
the tie up with crescent is also a winning combination, crescent motorcycles are one of our rst concept stores so not only can you see the rst collection there you can also watch the crescent team working on alex’s bikes. now in his second season riding for crescent suzuki, alex is set for a storming year aboard his gsxr1000. alex popped up to rst hq in derbyshire to pick up his latest test suit, and we took a few minutes to catch up with him for a cuppa and a chat!
RST: FIRST OF ALEX WELCOME TO THE RST FAMILY! thanks, it an exciting time ahead and i’m really pleased to be working with a british company so close to where I live. my test suit feels awesome; i can’t wait to get on the bike at portimao for the first 2015 test.
RST: WHAT DID YOU GET UPTO OVER THE WINTER? I was lucky another to spend some time over christmas with my mate freddie sheene in australia, the weather was so nice, I got loads of time on my pushbike (thanks for the rst cycling kit by the way I looked like a pro!). I also got to hang out and do some moto x and flat track riding with troy bayliss, chris vermulen, gary mccoy and jason crump. I got some time in the gym too, in-fact being in oz with the warm weather you eat really healthily, you don’t really feel like tucking into a mars bar when its 35 degrees! i’m now feeling in really good shape, we start testing in a couple of weeks so the timing was perfect.
RST: SO HOW MUCH ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO YOU’RE FIRST 2015 TEST? I can’t wait, I got to ride the new 2015 bike for the first time last year and it was epic I did my fastest ever lap round jerez on it, and knowing that the team will have improved the gsxr1000 even more gives me real confidence for the season ahead.
RST: WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS ON THE NEW WSBK RULES FOR 2015?
WORLD SUPERBIKE
TT AND ROAD RACING
Alex lowes (see opposite) spearheads RST’s assault on the World Superbike crown. With the new rules for 2015 the Lincolnshire lads Suzuki is on a much more level playing field for the coming season.
2015 is the year of the roads, with RST becoming the official safety partner of the official Isle Of Man TT. Ian Hutchinson is back on form and will be riding for the Paul Bird team at this years TT.
Be sure to follow Alexs progress on the RST website as we keep you up to date with his travels around the world.

BSB 2015 has to be the year of the Stalker. After Chris’s stunning performance in 2014 and with his new team managed by RST’s legend Tommy Hill, the old but gold rider is looking to put his Be Wiser Kawasaki ZX10R back in the showdown. Another hot rider joining the team is Howie Mainwairing, again aboard the series dominant ZX10R. RST campaigner Taylor Mackenzie makes the step up to BSB for 2015 aboard the WD40 ZX10 and is aiming to take the title of Rookie Of The Year.
SUPERSPORT Long time RST stalwart Graeme Gowland is looking to step up one spot and reclaim the title for RST. After a stellar performance in 2014, Graeme finished narrowly behind his team mate and surely has to be odds on to smash the competition throughout the season.
158
Cameron Donald will once again be piloting the ear splitting Norton around the world famous mountain course and if you haven’t heard it, trust us, its LOUD. Stuart Easton, fresh from his Macau GP win, has to be odds on favourite to spray the champagne at this years North West 200 (alongside his day as BSB rider for the PBM team).
INTERNATIONAL RST riders will be campaigning in championships around the globe including the Australian, new Zealand and south African championships and in championships in Taiwan, Thailand, eastern Europe as well as countless other domestic series around the globe.
I like the new rules, it’s going to make it a much tighter championship with everyone running similar power. Also the cost reduction means it’s better for the smaller teams and gives more young riders a chance to be seen on the world stage. The more bikes on the grid the better, and everyone loves close racing, including the riders! It’s also good for the suzuki, the new rules suit us and with how good the 2015 bike felt i’m feeling really positive, bring on phillip island!!
RST: AS YOU KNOW, RST IS THE OFFICIAL SAFETY PARTNER FOR THE 2015 ISLE OF MAN TT, DO YOU SEE YOURSELF EVER RACING AT THE TT? I love the tt and have massive respect for all the guys that ride there, but no basically my balls aren’t that big! i’ve never actually been to the tt but i’m really looking forward to coming over for the first time this year with rst.
RST: FINALLY, WE KNOW THAT BEING BSB CHAMPION MUST BE THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR, BUT WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE RACE? it has to be cadwell park 2013, it was a dream weekend. being a lincolnshire lad cadwell is my home round, and the support I got from the crown that weekend was awesome. everything went to plan, set pole position, won the first race set the fastest lap and then won race two. a clean sweep at your home race is about as good as it gets!
