ANCIENT COINS OF INDIA AND THEIR BROAD CATEGORIES


 Ancient Indian coins can be broadly categorised

into 6 sections namely: Janapada coins, Old Indian coins issued by Indian empires, coins issued by Ancient and early medieval kingdoms, Ancient coins of South India, coins of Ancient invaders and Indian old coins issued by ancient city states of India.

 The Indian subcontinent was split into 22 Janapadas

during the ancient period. Each janapada issued very interesting ancient Indian coins.



 Then came the powerful Indian kingdoms like

Gupta Empire, Satavahana, Western Kshatraps, Kalachuri of Tripuri etc.  Historical coins of India from the Gupta Era are sought after all over the world because of their fabulous and detailed designs.



 Early medieval kingdoms like Hindu Shahi,

Narmada Valley, Central India, Deccan, Malwa, Vidharbha etc also issued very beautiful old Indian coins.  The Hindu Shahi dynasty issued silver drachma weighing around 3.21 grams featuring bull and horsemen type designs.



 The ancient coins of India issued by powerful

south Indian empires like Cholas, Cheras, Pandyas, Banavasis etc. give us a deep insight about Indian history.  The Pallava king Mahendravarman I issued beautiful bronze coins featuring the Bull, Legend, Swastika theme.



 Ancient Invaders like Indo-Greeks, Indo-

Scythians, Ksshans etc. also issued some amazing old Indian coins.  Through the study of these wonderful old coins of India, you can learn a lot about our glorious past.
