Modern coins of India fall into a category of coins
that were issued after Independence. They are majorly classified onto two groups namely, Anna Series and Decimal coinage. Let’s take a look at a few interesting examples of modern Indian coins from both these categories today.
These square-shaped 2 Annas coins of modern India
belonged to the Anna Series and were die-struck by Government of India in 5.83 grams of Nickel in the year 1950 at Bombay Mint. For the first time ever, Hindi letters were used for Indian coinage, in the form of denomination “do Aana” on the reverse. They featured a diamond shaped mint mark. The obverse featured the text “GOVERNMENT OF INDIA”, National Emblem and a Star while the reverse featured Zebu the Bull, year, and denomination in Hindi and English.
These round-shaped 1 rupee modern coins of India
belonged to the Anna Series and were die-struck by GOI in 11.66 grams of nickel in 1950 at Bombay Mint with a Diamond shaped mint mark. The obverse featured the text GOVERNMENT OF INDIA around National Emblem with a Star below while the reverse features a two stems of grains, numeral '1' , Ek rupya in Devanagri, RUPEE and Year.
These square-shaped 5 paise modern Indian coins
belong to the decimal coinage category and were Die Struck by GOI in 1.5 grams of Aluminium in the year 1977 at Bombay Mint with Diamond Mint Mark to promote the development of India. The reverse depicted symbols of development like, Books, Crops, F.A.O, Gears, Hands, Houses, Red Cross and Red Crescent on the reverse along with the text SAVE FOR DEVELOPMENT in Roman and VIKAS KE LIYE BACHAIYE in Devanagari.
These unique and relatively rare modern Indian coins were
die-struck in the shape of a hexagon by GOI in 1.21 grams of Aluminium in 1964 at Bombay Mint with a diamond-shaped mint mark. These 3 Paise modern coins of India belonged to the decimal coinage category. The Obverse featured the National emblem, text Bharat in Hindi भभरत and India while the reverse featured text teen paise in hindi, numeral 3 and year.
