UMHP Uganda Maternal Healthcare Project Include brief description (also send Olivia a reminder email!!)
Initial sketches for an example sent to the Ugandan Maternal Healthcare Book makers. I really like these as they are simple and get the idea of combining analogue and digital well. Still much more to improve on though.
Final Designs These were all based on short descriptions I got sent about each scene that they wanted to be conveyed through an illustration. I used my imagination while also referring to some reference images for either rough poses, fashion, objects and facial features. I would ideally have taken all primary photographs, which I did in some cases for poses, however in order to appeal to the target audience I had to research into African culture and so use these secondary resources to inspire my art work. I followed some African high street designers on Instagram which helped give me some knowledge on the fashion. However the images I created were mostly totally reliant on my own imagination of how the scene was described in the paragraphs I got sent. These were incredibly useful as they were really specific however the downfall to this was it was really hard to draw correctly and took much longer as the scenes were quite complex and proportions and layout had to be carefully considered. Because of the time and experimentation it took to create each illustration I started the initial drawings in pencil in my sketchbook. In future I would probably do these on loose sheets as it would be easier and more accurately scanned in to the computer. I then scanned in the images and worked on them on Photoshop.
Photoshop Using Photoshop I changed the Levels in order to make the outliers and sketchbook page a clear white, while also making the pencil lines a sturdier darker tone. I also made sure it was all Grey scale so that the original image is all black and white. I then changed it to RGB (for online image sharing) and CMYK (for when they print out the book illustrations). I wanted to make sure there was a colour palette theme so that all the illustrations worked as a set and kept it limited in the back ground as the main characters outfit was pretty intense with a painted pattern I made myself. It had to be red and orange themed but I had a bit of creative freedom designing it so I had fun experimenting with African style patterns. I wanted to keep the rest of the image quite simple but still wanted some colour there. I think this would have looked much better if the background colours had textures and I had not just kept them a simple Photoshop paintbrush effect‌ I should have been a lot more experimental however as I had a time constraint I wanted to be as simple and quick to an overall good appearance as possible.
