Green zones play an important role in an urban environment and they are an integral part of our social lives. Particularly Georgian people experience lack of such spaces and they desire more. To look at Tbilisi, the city actually has quite many so called “green areas” but they cannot function properly, either they are not well managed.

Parks, gardens and other public spaces can be identified by specific type of aesthetics, most of the parks in Tbilisi are over managed and controlled by city planners. Park infrastructures as lightings, benches, trees, bushes, fountains are overpopulated and sometimes not contextual. For instance, in such managed Parks we see pavilions, so called “Besetkas”, gym equipment, lightings in just every two meters, rows of benches, drinking fountains, litter bins and last but not least, some inscriptions that warn us to stay away from the grass.

Hippodrome is an informal space, which is located in the district of Saburtalo, it is surrounded by a mountain and a highway. nowadays it is one of the only public spaces left in the city center. It is totally unmanaged

Parki-Tsikhe

Hippodrome full of infrastructure The emptiness of Hippodrome gives people the opportunity to invent their activities. Some people go to play cricket, baseball, rugby, martial arts, etc. It is a place, where nothing, not a single infrastructure, encourages any kind of activity. Imagine hippodrome full of infrastructure, would it still be as attractive?! 15

Parki-Tsikhe

The main reason why green spaces sometimes do not work is that they are being treated as an autonomous objects, without an adequate assessment of their surrounding urban context. City municipality have offered us the future of the Hippodrome area, full of infrastructure, full of managed spaces. This project contains mediatheque, area for senior citizens, japanese and french gardens, fountain, calisthenics, rope park, parking, amphitheater, pont, etc.

The ‘Parki-Tsikhe’ project aims to oppose managed spaces, where the nature is dominating over the infrastructure and where user decides own functional needs

19

Highway Hippodrome is surrounded by highway, which not only divides it from the other parts of the city, but, in addition, creates needless sound and pollution

Entrances Entering Hippodrome is a massive problem because nothing, not a single icon can direct

The aim of the project ‘Parki-Tsikhe’ is to create a green oasis in a city and most importantly, define an edge to stop city growth 27

Parki-Tsikhe

Artificial Terrain + Wall Using artificial terrain to lock the Hippodrome area and create a wall that follows the road and acts as a barrier and support for the new landscape

Artificial terrain that stays in the borders Creating a new landscape inside the Hippodrome borders can offer a mountain feeling, reduce car sound and act as a barrier between highway and the Hippodrome area

28

Parki-Tsikhe

Artificial terrain that covers the road A new landscape should act as new possibilities, not just the oasis protector. Hippodrome area can communicate with the city better with extended landscape. We get rid of car noise and pollution, connect the city and the green zone and maintain the inner form, as well as the historic importance of this place 29

‘Parki-Tsikhe’ - Master Plan 37

Parki-Tsikhe

Around the Hippodrome, there are different conditions and it is important to adjust the new landscape to each of them. Sections show that elevations are different, besides, housing types and heights of buildings are unalike too. Developers housing, 2-3 storey building, soviet blocks surround the Hippodrome area.

The ‘Parki-Tsikhe’ project aims to create an artificial landscape that acts as an edge, a border between housing and the open green space. Beyond this edge the city can grow, but inside no infrastructure is allowed 41
