Our approach was to bury the house partially into the contour and allow the landscape to extend all over it to form a terraced hillock. This works well to insulate the house from the hot summers while also providing a large, green, gathering space during the cooler months. The house itself is a modest six rooms but extends out in every direction to gather a large part of the outside as part of the experience inside

1

2

This ongoing architectural project is located on an acre large site. It is a weekend home in the middle of an existing farmland on a contoured site.We tried to ease the tension between the existing public land and the private aura of the house by permitting a flow on similar lines to its surrounding topography.

TEAM : Debanil P, Zameer Basrai (Studio head) This is one of India’s first Diamond Co creation centres which allowed clients to interact with the designers and see the whole process of their jewelery being made. A lot of thought was given in the zoning of various area as it is a high security facility with certain areas accessible to the general public while others only to selected clients and workers. We also worked on a lot of furniture modules that encouraged interaction between co workers ensuring a creative atmosphere

The idea of the Smoke House Deli is to showcase the best the cities we inhabit have to offer, and take a fun, irreverent look at the exciting, bizarre and inspiring world that surrounds us.The idea is to do research on interesting unknown stories about the location of each restaurant , hand sketch these stories on the wall with black permanent marker and then lacquering it.Each Smoke House Deli is unique in terms of content depending on its location.

O6. THE BANDRA PROJECT urban research initiative

Compound wall Green cover Open spaces

Make a list of criteria for rating the walking experience

Green cover

Criteria List down mapping criteria for rating based on literature review and research

Walk it ! Walking should be observational and analytical starting with small streets and small blocks , making way up to larger streets Building heights

Heritage & Pedestrian

Check density of built fabric The relation between pedestrians and built facade

ARABIAN SEA

Activity mapping

Create matrix for analysis Identify intersection using visual medium

Analyze Correlate using ratings and to work towards defining the best approach like pedestrianizing

Overlaying the layers to arrive at a consolidated map

Mapping a suburb Identifying best pedestrian spines within the suburb of Bandra. The strategy board uses threads and pins to find the ideal pedestrian spines which would have a favorable balance of heritage structures, ideal height of surrounding buildings with respect to the street and adequate green cover

29

The project The project aims to understand and actively engage with the tangible and intangible aspects of this vibrant suburb in Mumbai. To allow for an in depth understanding of the streetscape , listing and rating built forms, open spaces, monuments and landmarks to list down diverse criteria in an effort to quantify the suburb’s pedestrian response.

The resultant map of Bandra with overlapping layers of age of buildings, green cover , pedestrian spines and heights of the builtform

30

Outcomes of the mapping exercise Apart from creating the multilayered pedestrain map of Bandra , the energy and research generated in the process also helped us to delve into various other areas of enquiry such as public realm, public engagement, heritage conservation and wayfinding

Heritage conservation and making it accessible to people

Wayfinding strategy for Bandra

Making people aware of their heritage. One key step in their direction was developing “Do it Yourself models of various heriatge structures within Bandra

A lot of areas within Bandra which have maintained the narrow circulation pattern of the old hamlets can be confusing to move around for various users. Our public outreach exercises helped us devise wayfinding strategies for some areas within the suburb involving the residents of Bandra

Public realm enhancement Creating informal seating around existing tree in Ranwar. Enhancing state of public realm in pockets of Bandra using creative solutions such as street art

Publication

Public engagement

Findings from the research and a compilation of hypothetical situations imagining the state of Bandra after 25 years will be published in the form of a book called the Bandra Project.

Taking the findings to the various stakeholders involved in the project, namely the residents of this vibrant suburb Bandra. This was achieved by hosting open exhibitions for the public and interaction on social media to achieve valuable feedback

INTEGRATING WATER INTO THE URBAN FABRIC TO INCREASE INTERACTION WITH IT ALONG LONDON’S POST INDUSTRIAL RESIDENTIAL WATERFRONTS

SUPERVISOR : David Syme The role of water in our cities has changed dramatically over time. What we have today in many cities is an a system of post industrial waterfronts with reduced accessibility to water affecting chances of interaction between man and the natural element in the face of conflicting pressures of urban development. The project explores ways of increasing interaction with water at 3 different scales : Enclosure , Waterfront and the Urban fabric in the context of an already newly proposed residential development along London’s post industrial waterfront
