1.1 CASE STUDY There are two types of architecture style that interest me. The modern architecture-the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan by Zaha Hadid; and the traditional oriental wooden structure architecture the Sunnyhills in Tokyo, Japan by Kengo Kuma.

The Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan by Zaha Hadid

The center, different from the rigid and monumental Soviet architecture, the design establishes a continuous relationship between the plaza and the interior. The elaborated folds and formations make the building accessible to all visitors through different levels.

1.2 STUDY MODELS Three study models were made to illustrate the idea of making a kite model.

STUDY MODELS VERSION 1, 2, AND 3

ITERATION 1.1 This is the structure of the model developed from the study model. It creates the geometric shape of shadows under the spotlight.

ITERATION 1.2

In the second iteration, I changed the length of the wood, trying to make some changes of the rigid shape. However, the internal space it gives has less variations for skinning. Thus, the third iteration came out. Using couple long materials to combining two individual rigid structures, created more interesting internal space for adding on the skin later.

ITERATION 1.3

ITERATION 1.4 Skinning Fabric was put on the model to test the shape and function.

The fabric should be more three dimensional, instead of just couple individual pieces.

Based on the skeleton from the last iteration, some sketches of the skinning concept was drawn, and then further constructed into the model.

ITERATION 1.5 Skinning Concepts: The pros of the way that last iteration was skinned was not unified enough. Thus, in the final iteration, the skin material was first changed to a more transparent material. And secondly, it was connected in a more consecutive way.

It showed on the central piece fabric, it is connected by one consecutive piece, and two more rectangular shape of fabrics were added on two side of the kit to create partial enclosure space rather than explode from all sides.

2 KITE WORKSHOP

The kite workshop is located at the edge of Golden Gate Park,

SITE ANALYSIS

As we can see from the map, the site is surrounding by couple main routes, and also located right in front of one of the busiest street-haight street. Also, it is also at the edge of the Golden Gate park. Therefore, the site is the threshold of the busyness and the quietness.

Mapping of the main traffic route, marked in dark color, and the heavy noise area marked in curved lines. We can see that the site of the workshop is surrounding by chaos , and there’s no transition from the commercial to the park. Therefore, the site itself gives a sense of being neglected.

Mapping of the commercial area, marked in dark shadow. And other residential area, in empty rectangular shape. We can see the site is next to a busy commercial area. And the workshop is aimed to provide a learning space for the children and also for the visitor to enjoy the time of the park and facilities.

CONCEPTUAL MODELS

Since the site has issues of being chaotic, neglected and no transition. The goal is to design a building that is quite, peaceful with a slow transition from the busyness to the quietness, and make it the destination for the visitors.

FUNCTIONING

This building is mainly a kite workshop that designed for the children to making kites. Thus, the main functioning areas are: -

Mainly, the workshop. it can be open to all community activity use when it is not workshop time.

-

Secondly, the gallery. It is also important to exhibit the children's work.

-

Thirdly, visitor center. Since, it is located on the center of city and the center of the cultural difference. Hence, it is the good place to let the people from other places to know the specialities of the city.

-

The lounge, located next to the lake. Divided from the main functioning area, the lounge provided a quiet zone for the adults and all visitors to enjoy the tranquility of the park while they are just a block away from one of the busiest districts of the city.

ITERATION I

This iteration is formed by changing the facade of each individual parts of buildings, and combined according to the functioning layout. Particularly, the height difference of the facades are decided according to the view that can be viewed by the visitors from each space within the building. SIDE VIEW- I

According to the functional layout that decided previously, more geometry shape was added into this iteration try to form a separate building with a same geometric language.

ITERATION II

POPULATION FLOW STANYAN STREET

The population flow around the site and the building will be like the diagram show on the left side. The majority people will be coming the street/ outside of the part. Then will be separated into different parts of the building according to the one’s interest. And the lake will be located the west end of the site. With this layout, the building can lead the visitors into the park slowly, it has buffer function of slow transitioning the people. E N

ITERATION III Roof walkway and the canopy was added to form a uniform structure above the existing building layouts. This is aim to create more diverse and a transitional experience for the visitors while walking into the park through the busy commercial area. The walkway can be reached from all directions within the park or from the street. The canopies are to providing shading from the sunlight for the walking people.

FINAL ITERATION

The final iteration was inspiration by the River Building by SANAA Architect. In this project, the big idea is to create a building that invites people from all sides, a building without boundaries from the park and the building itself. Thus, the building is separated into different components according to different function of the building.

Also, each space will have the maximum view of the park. The long roof is acting as the pathway into the park, which allows people cross the park freely, and it also creates a buffer space while going into the park. Without the canopy, I hope the visitors will enjoy the ultimate beauty of the natural environment.
