Welcome Message

WELCOME

GIRL SCOUTS OF SOUTHWEST TEXAS VOLUNTEERS

We love that everyone in our community is unique. When we get together, we share our stories, learn from each other and create connections that last a lifetime. To ensure that every girl’s experience is “wowworthy,” our volunteers are given the opportunity to attend learning courses that help them guide girls through fun-filled adventures. We have adult learning courses for all pathways and invite volunteers to share this experience to help girls make the world a better place. All volunteers with Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas need to be a current registered member, have an approved background check screening on file with the council, and complete required training

for their volunteer role. These are the first steps to becoming a volunteer! Adult learning courses listed on the following pages will help you be ready to volunteer in any pathway you choose. Note: Troop leaders are required to attend Troop Leadership Essentials before meeting with the troop/group.

Do not hesitate to contact the Volunteer Development Center

(210-349-2404/1-800-580-7247). They can assist you with determining what courses you should register for and attend.

Outcomes & Pathways

Outcomes of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience

Girl Scout Pathways

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) represents a leap forward in how Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character.

Camp. This pathway captures participation in day, twilight or resident camp. It allows girls to participate in the outdoors and/or focus on environmental education. Girls must currently attend or have completed kindergarten to participate.

More than a century ago, Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low recognized that developing girls’ leadership abilities was critical for ensuring they would be the positive changemakers of the future. Since Juliette Low’s time, the world has changed dramatically. This ever-more complex and uncertain world requires a new kind of leader—one who values diversity, inclusion and collaboration and is committed to improving neighborhoods, communities and the world. The GSLE engages girls in discovering themselves, connecting with others and taking action to make the world a better place. This model begins with a definition of leadership that girls understand and believe in: a leader, girls say, is defined not only by the qualities and skills one has, but also by how those qualities and skills are used to make a difference in the world. This more inclusive and empowering model of shared leadership is also the one most valued by girls. It encourages girls to take an increased responsibility for designing and implementing activities, resulting in opportunities for them to see how their actions can impact the lives of others. The GSLE identifies three “keys” to leadership: Discover—girls understand themselves and their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world. Connect—girls care about, inspire and team with others locally and globally. Take Action—girls act to make the world a better place.

When Discover, Connect and Take Action activities are girl-led and involve learning by doing and cooperative learning, girls achieve the desired and expected short-term leadership outcomes, ultimately resulting in Girl Scouting achieving its mission.

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has developed a more flexible model for participation in Girl Scouting. When a girl joins the organization, she becomes a Girl Scout member. Girls can choose any one, all or some of these pathways:

Events. This pathway offers a variety of scheduled activities that are open to all girls by grade level. Girls may choose to participate in as many events as they like, exploring their skills and interests along the way in a variety of thematic areas such as community service, cultural arts, overnighters, healthy living, math and science, aquatics, environmental awareness and much more. Series. This pathway offers activities for the same group of participating girls, scheduled over three to eight weeks, relating to a specific theme or purpose. Series are developed with the intent that each registered participant attend all sessions scheduled throughout the course of the offering, because sessions are designed so that each day builds toward the next and culminates upon the delivery of the last session activity. Travel. These programs offer leadership and cross-cultural opportunities through regional, national and international travel. Girls can participate through council-sponsored trips or national and international sponsored trips called destinations. Girls will meet with other girls and adults, participate in a “girl-centric” planning component, travel to a destination and take part in a service-learning Take Action project. Troops. This pathway offers girls an opportunity to work with the same group of girls in their own grade level, usually over a span of nine to 12 months, in partnership with two or more appointed adult advisors. Girls may join at any time during the membership year. The troop/group meets for the enjoyment and benefit of the girls, and meetings are built around the girls’ ideas. Girl planning, in partnership with adult volunteers, helps to develop a team relationship, developing leadership skills and allowing girls to benefit from the guidance, mentoring and coaching of caring adults.

Girl Scout Pathways for Girls TROOPS Same girls, all sessions; typically spans the length of a school year.

24 | Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas

Same girls, all sessions relating to a specific theme or purpose.

The Troop Pathway offers girls an opportunity to work with the same group of girls in their own grade level, usually over a span of nine to twelve months, in partnership with two or more appointed adult advisors. Girls may join at any time during the membership year. Being that Girl Scouts is a girl-led, volunteersupported organization, the ability to find troop placement is up to the availability of the troop spots in your area, either geographically or by the school your child attends.

TRAVEL

The troop/group meets for the enjoyment and benefit of the girls and meetings are built around the girls’ ideas. Girl planning, in partnership with adult volunteers, helps to develop a team relationship, making space for the development of leadership skills, and allowing girls to benefit from the guidance, mentoring and coaching of caring adults.

SERIES

Regional, national and international trips.

Benefits of being in a troop Girls need a safe, nurturing environment to help them grow strong—physically, mentally and emotionally—and they can find it in Girl Scouts. Girl Scouting encourages girls to make decisions, try new activities, give back to their communities and feel proud of their accomplishments. In the process, girls build confidence, increase self-esteem and clarify values.

Through environmental awareness programs, girls focus SO F SOUTH on the care and conservation of our planet. H-E-B and the Healthy Living Initiative

Through Healthy Living programs, girls focus on physical and emotional health. By participating in this initiative, girls learn the skills they need to keep their bodies healthy, minds engaged and spirits alive. By building strong, healthy bodies and learning problem-solving techniques, girls gain the selfconfidence and skills needed to develop healthy relationships in which they give and receive the respect and trust every child seeks. This is the first step to helping every girl attain her personal best in life.

Each initiative provides specified curriculum for all levels of Girl Scouting. Girls/troops are eligible for the patch once all activities in their grade level booklet are complete. Patches will be given free of charge to all GSSWT girl members. Each individual ordering patches is required to complete a program evaluation form.

Valero Energy Corporation and the STEM Initiative

(Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) The need for skilled science, technology, engineering and math professionals is ever-growing. Though traditionally male-dominated, women are having a greater impact in these areas than ever before. In this initiative, girls will push boundaries, test limits and look at the world through inquisitive eyes. Whether they’re building a robot, learning the needs of a car’s engine or creating a chemical reaction, girls are moving forward into the future.

Wells Fargo and the Financial Literacy Initiative Wells Fargo is focused on the Financial Literacy Initiative while providing girls the resources and knowledge on how to set goals and become financially responsible when earning and managing money. Wells Fargo understands the importance of financial education for girls who will become productive citizens and already contribute to the economy.

Girl Scouting and the Religious Community Working Together Historically, Girl Scouting has been committed to diversity, religious and otherwise, and a rich tapestry of religious beliefs is reflected in the Girl Scout membership. Statement of Belief We, the members of Girl Scouts of the United States of America, united (by a belief in God and) by acceptance of the Girl Scout Promise and Law...do dedicate ourselves to the purpose of inspiring girls with the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism, and service that they may become happy and resourceful citizens. We believe that the motivating force in Girl Scouting is a spiritual one. We affirm that the Girl Scout Movement shall ever be open to all girls and adults who accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. -Excerpt from Preamble, Constitution of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Realizing the benefits of collaboration with Girl Scouting, many faith based groups have developed religious award activities that encourage Girl Scouts to become stronger members of their faith. Benefits of Working Together The Girl Scout Promise and Law reflect that we are a spirituallybased organization. We are non-denominational, though the values we endorse are universal -- for example, respecting oneself and others and making the world a better place. In working with her faith group, a Girl Scout reinforces her commitment to her faith. At the same time, religious groups strengthen their connection to girls, their families, and youth in their communities.

Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas Interfaith Committee The GSSWT Interfaith Committee provides information to the Service Unit Interfaith Coordinators about all faith communities Religious Award programs and promotes girl and adult involvement with the Religious Award programs. In addition, the committee assists with presentations about the Religious Awards programs and encourages the observance of Girl Scout Sabbath/Girl Scout Sunday in local faith congregations. Councilwide events are planned for girls to learn more about faith communities in our area and to support Girl Scout Sabbath/Girl Scout Sunday.

Adult Learning Waiver Request

PREREQUISITE: Girl Scout courses in another council and service as a Girl Scout volunteer within the last two years. Welcome to Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas! We have many volunteers who, like you, have come to us from other councils and USA Girl Scouts Overseas. We know you bring with you a wealth of new ideas and we welcome your enthusiasm. Volunteers requesting a waiver must meet the following requirements: • Must have been active and continue to be active at the troop level within the last two years. • Course must be comparable to that offered at this council. Volunteers should read over the course descriptions found in this guide. • Waiver requests (form below) must be completed and submitted with documentation (i.e., copy of past training card, etc.) to the Volunteer Development department. • Volunteers will be notified in writing of the results of their waiver request.
