Gold Award Girl Scout

Sydney Yanez, of Helotes Gold Award Project: “C.A.M.P. Barefoot

Sensory Pathway and Inspiration Rock Garden”

Through her project, Sydney provided people with disabilities the opportunity to explore and enjoy the great outdoors by constructing an environmentally friendly barefoot sensory pathway and inspirational rock garden for campers at Camp C.A.M.P. (Children’s Association for Maximum Potential).

“I wanted to provide experiences that will stimulate special needs campers’ senses as they touch the barefoot sensory pathway and experience its different textures,” Sydney said.

“The rock garden will allow campers to peacefully walk the large space and reflect on all the positive messages and soothing colors and rock shapes. All of these experiences will help calm them, reduce stress, and simply allow the campers and staff to enjoy the outdoors in the Texas Hill Country.”

Sydney is a graduate of Antonian College Preparatory High School and is studying communications and marketing at Texas Christian University.

Girl Scout Patch Partner

The Tobin Endowment introduces girls to all forms of art with an emphasis on education as part of its Arts Initiative. Its program provides an indepth view of the arts in our community and its impact on personal development. Through the encouragement of artistic expression, girls improve their self-esteem, feel motivated to explore new interests, and may even develop new talents in music, dance, or visual arts.

Through arts programs, girls focus on self-expression and discovery. The arts are vital to youth development and provide limitless possibilities for growth and exploration. Research shows the arts can reach students where other academic subjects cannot. Come develop your artistic skills and earn your Tobin Endowment Arts Initiative patch at Second Saturday on Saturday, Oct. 8. Learn more at www.girlscouts-swtx.org/events.

Why STEM?

When girls participate in focused STEM programs, they are more interested in STEM and careers in tech— including app development, robotics, coding, and cybersecurity—and they:

- Become better problem-solvers and critical thinkers (OR learn to think scientifically to solve problems).

- Have confidence in their STEM skills and abilities.

- Get excited about STEM subjects and want to learn more about them.

- Learn the importance and relevance of STEM to people and society and options for their own career paths.

You’re invited to help us celebrate the 75th anniversary of Camp La Jita! Join us out at camp this Oct. 21-23 to reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and celebrate our beloved camp and this historic milestone.

Girl Scout troops of all ages are invited to spend the night at camp Friday, Oct. 21, and Saturday, Oct. 22. Everyone— Girl Scouts, parents and caregivers, alumni, and family— is invited to a day of fun events Saturday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Come enjoy activities ranging from crafting, ropes course, history about the camp, lessons about the site’s archaeology, and more. Lunch will be included.
