December 2024

Hello

As December unfolds, we find ourselves surrounded by the glow of holiday lights, the warmth of family gatherings, and the quiet reflection that comes with the close of another year. It's a time when we pause—amid the flurry of festivities and the rush of year-end tasks—to look back on all that we've experienced, learned, and cherished throughout the past twelve months.

In this special issue of St. Johns Magazine, we celebrate the magic of the season and the sense of connection that defines our community. From heartwarming stories of generosity and service to local events that bring us all together, this edition reminds us of the power of coming together to create joy and meaning, not just for ourselves but for those around us.

Whether it's a local charity providing a muchneeded service, a small business making the season brighter, or a neighbor offering a helping hand, these acts of compassion and care are what truly make this time of year so special.

Thank you for your support, curiosity, and shared passion for our community that continue to inspire us. As we close out the year and look forward to the next, we are grateful for you—and for all the ways we’ll continue to grow, connect, and celebrate together.

Wishing you peace, joy, and connection this holiday season & a blessed New Year!

Warmly,

The Value of Team Mentorship

We live in a world that has adopted the theory that less employee cost is a boost to profit margin and automation is a catalyst to inexpensive productivity. We have all experienced the impact of this thinking when we have shopped at a WalMart store. After filling our shopping carts with the goods we desire, we are then tasked with the burden of “self-checkout” and self - bagging. Then after we have loaded our carts, scanned our items, bagged our goods and paid our bill, we are asked to prove it by the one human now involved in our transactional efforts, as we depart the store. And I’m imagining that right now you all have a smile o n your face as you nod your head in agreement from an experience you’ve ha d like this at many corporate retail stores in our area.

Our key to success is in the training and “Mentorship” of these important employees, designed to represent the core focus of ou practice. We realized that as we harnessed the amazing talents our people, the sharing of those talents and the training of th teams, was uber important. So we began a process of training protocols and schedules for all employees. We incorporated the years of experience of many of our key personnel and utilized o leaders to share the summative wealth of experience. Mentorship is in itself, a marvelous opportunity to lead and share in a cumulative result. And we have seen tremendous results when applied. Our Hospital Technicians, numbering 26, have a cumulative experience level equaling 94 years! Our 7 doctors together have an experience level of over 45 years. When a clients pet is being treated or having a procedure, it’s that d of cumulative knowledge that provides the very best opportunity for success as our doctors communicate together over the medica details.

What a true benefit for a client to draw that level of input fo their pets care. What a huge benefit to our doctors to be able to count on the Team of DVM’s for input and experience to provide the best outcome for our clients. Utilizing that depth of exper in a mentorship format, breeds a thorough level of quality outp supported by the numbers in each of our departments.

Our practice also embarked on a program with the United States Military known as the SkillBridge Program. Designed by the military, this program helps military personnel embarking on a away from their branch in the private sector as a civilian. Qualified industry companies adopt approved candidates for training in the career industry of their choice.

Our Hospital Technicians, numbering 26, have a cumulative experience level equaling 94 years! Our 7 Doctors together have an experience level of over 45 years.

These companies are given between 90 to 120 days to train these military persons and prepare them for their next steps as a civilian. Currently Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital is the only approved veterinary practice in the United States. We are honored to offer these amazing people who have served our country well by serving them in our mentorship training program, as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.

As we continue in our never ceasing effort to care for our clients and their beautiful pets in the highest quality medicine and the very best compassionate care, we continue to look for opportunities to prioritize the human impact element as paramount to that success. Our highly staffed and operated practice with it’s 75 current employees is well poised to serve and care for anyone looking for that level of involvement and focused care for their pets and families. It is now, as it was when we began, a true honor to serve our local community in a family owned and operated business that cares for people in a manner befitting of their investment in their pets. And it is our faith in God’s purpose for our practice that we continue in that effort as we share His love for our community.

2025: THE YEAR OF JUBILEE IN ITALY

How to Experience Italy (& Avoid the Crowds) During this Year-Long Event

What is the Jubilee?

The year 2025 marks a special occasion in Italy as the country celebrates the Anno Santo, or Jubilee, a significant religious event that draws millions of pilgrims to Rome. While the Jubilee is a remarkable time to visit Italy, it also means larger crowds, especially at religious and historic sites like the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica.

Can Travelers Still Enjoy Italy?

The good news is that with strategic planning, you can still enjoy Italy’s wonders while avoiding the masses. As a luxury travel advisor, I’ve already helped several clients secure seamless Italian journeys for 2025, ensuring their experience is just as enjoyable despite the heightened activity.

For those visiting Rome, the heart of the Jubilee celebrations, timing is everything. I recommend traveling during the shoulder seasons—late spring or early fall—when the weather is still perfect, but the crowds are more manageable. I've curated personalized itineraries featuring private tours and exclusive experiences to help my clients skip the lines at major attractions. A privately guided early morning tour of the Vatican, for instance, ensures you see its beauty without the crush of crowds.

For my clients seeking an organized tour, options like the Globus "Italy’s Great Cities" package or a Kensington Tours private itinerary are ideal. These tours combine stress-free planning with VIP access to iconic landmarks, ensuring an enriching experience without the hassle of navigating peak season crowds.

I offer white-glove service for clients who want a fully bespoke experience, tailoring every detail like this 12-day custom itinerary with luxurious stays, private tours, and breathtaking experiences.

Alternative Destinations

If you’re concerned about the larger Jubilee crowds, consider alternative destinations within Italy such as Puglia or Umbria or even the island of Sardinia. These regions offer breathtaking scenery, amazing cuisine, and cultural richness with fewer tourists.

For travelers wanting to avoid the Jubilee entirely but still explore Europe, destinations like Greece, Portugal, or the French Riviera offer equally captivating experiences without the crowds. Early bookings are essential, so now is the time to secure accommodations and private tours.

With thoughtful planning and the guidance of a trusted travel expert, Italy in 2025 can still be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, even during the busy Jubilee year. I look forward to connecting with you to plan your next trip.

The Perfect 12-Day ITalian Itinerary

UNIQUELY CLAUDIA

Local Fashion Designer & Business Owner Claudia Maya Reflects on an Invitation to New York Fashion Week & How it shaped her Brand

The Inspiration Behind Uniquely Claudia Boutique

Uniquely Claudia Boutique was born from my passion for fashion and desire to empower women to feel confident and unique in their style. After years as a Marketing Communication Executive in the Oil & Gas industry, I sought a more meaningful and creative path. I wanted to create a space where women could find pieces that not only looked beautiful but also celebrated their individuality. Moving from corporate to fashion allowed me to connect with my community on a personal level, witnessing how the right outfit can transform confidence and outlook. The boutique offers high-quality, versatile designs in an intimate setting where every customer feels valued.

The New York Fashion Week Experience

Being invited to showcase at New York Fashion Week was an incredible unexpected milestone for Uniquely Claudia Boutique. A fashion industry contact recognized our unique style and recommended us as an emerging brand, leading to an official invitation to this prestigious event. NYFW symbolized years of hard work and dedication to empowering women through fashion. It inspired me to take the boutique to the next level, sparking the launch of our own clothing line. The experience reaffirmed our mission and expanded our platform to inspire women worldwide. New York Fashion Week has always been a symbol of creativity and influence in the fashion world, and to be a part of it felt like a dream come true. It was a powerful reminder that following your passion and staying true to your vision can open doors you never imagined.

For me, this invitation meant so much more than a professional achievement— it was a validation of years of hard work, risk-taking, and passion for empowering women through fashion.

Creating the Pearl Collection

With just six weeks to prepare, I designed the Pearl Collection, a line featuring elegant, timeless pieces unified by delicate pearl accents. Pearls have long symbolized elegance and timeless beauty, which aligns perfectly with Uniquely Claudia’s mission to create chic, empowering fashion that celebrates individuality. Each design reflected our boutique's blend of classic and modern femininity, with pearls adding a touch of grace and individuality. Collaborating with seamstresses, we carefully placed each pearl to enhance the collection’s sophistication. Seeing these designs shimmer on the NYFW runway was a powerful moment, highlighting the elegance and empowerment at the heart of Uniquely Claudia.

Looking Ahead

NYFW has profoundly shaped Uniquely Claudia’s future, inspiring us to expand our collections and introduce exclusive designs that blend authenticity, quality, and empowerment. Our goal is to become a destination where women find fashion that celebrates their uniqueness while fostering confidence and connection. This experience has opened doors for collaborations, growth, and a broader reach to inspire women through timeless, chic designs.

DERITA ITALIAN DELI AS AUTHENTIC SOUTH PHILLY AS YOU CAN GET!

Being from Boston and Irish Italian, I’m pretty familiar with what we call Little Italy or the North End of Boston and the typical food that Italians from that area love. I was recently introduced to Philadelphia's "Southend" or what they refer to as South Philly and the foods that those Italians are proud to share and have been made famous.

South Philly foods included cheesesteak, stromboli, hoagie, soft pretzel, water ice, and soda.Everyone has heard of (unless you live under a rock) of the Philly cheesesteak . But do you know the history behind the making of this fabulous sandwich? In the 1930s, the phenomenon as a steak sandwich began when South Philly's Italian-American brothers Pat Olivieri and Harry

that true Philadelphians would never put on a Philly cheesesteak), and of course the "wiz" but if you prefer to be a little fru-fru they will happily oblige with either cooper sharp provolone (sooo smooth and creamy) or cheddar. These are only served on Wednesdays so get your order in early! You do NOT want to miss out!

Their daily menu consists of the finest of Italian imported meats as well as some amazing ones that you would not see in a typical sandwich (Hoagie) shop in North Florida. Such as SOPPRESSATA which is an Italian dry salami (dry fermented sausage), a culinary specialty of Calabria, Southwestern Italy. It is one of the staple types of salami that has different variations specific to each region. In Northern Italy, it is called “sopressa”.

Olivieri put grilled beef on a hot dog bun and gave it to a taxi driver. Later, after Pat and Harry had started selling the sandwich on Italian rolls the cheese was melted in a separate container to accommodate their large clientele who followed kosher rules, thereby not mixing dairy and meat. Today, cheese choices in South Philly are virtually limited to American, Provolone, or Cheez Whiz. (After Kraft Cheese Whiz went on the market in 1952, Pat Olivieri realized he could heat up the entire can on the grill and put cheese on some of the sandwiches without contaminating the grill with dairy. Thus, the cheesesteak was born).

We are lucky enough to have our own authentic South Philly Italian Deli right here in our area. Stephanie and her husband Joe decided that they wanted to introduce South Philly to North Florida and so Derita's was born. Stephanie has a long history of working in the restaurant business so she knows quality and only orders the freshest and finest ingredients from around the world. Just about everything is imported from Italy or brought in from Philly thus making the food the very best at providing the true Italian flavor.

They, of course, have perfected the PHILLY CHEESE STEAK made with the tenderest of Ribeye, topped with either fresh onions or grilled (none of the other stuff

Soppressata’s overall savory flavor is from dry chili flakes, salt, and assortments of pepper used to season it. On the other hand, the most common salami variants are usually seasoned with salt, vinegar, and garlic. That is why its taste is more garlicky. Derita's has many choices that include this meat but I would highly recommend trying the HOT SOPPRESSATA, it's not as hot as you may think but it adds so much flavor to your already stuffed hoagie it's like adding icing on the cake!

MORTADELLA- is another meat that is not typically seen on the menu. Some may call it the bologna of Italy, Mortadella is rich and fatty and the spices and pistachios are designed to give the meat several layers of flavor. The pistachios and spices (typically myrtle berries or black pepper) add freshness and vibrancy — and a bit of bite or spice — to the otherwise smooth, mild meat. Very rarely will you see this meat in any sandwich shop in this area but Derita's has come up with a combination of a Hoagie made with Mortadella, Fresh Mozzarell, and Pistachio Pesto! Are you kidding me PISTACHIO PESTO!? Something seriously unique ..give it a try!

These handcrafted, hand-sliced made to order Hoagies (Derived from "Hog Island" sandwich; hence, the "hoagie". It was declared the official sandwich of Philadelphia in 1992) also come with some flavorpacked toppings such as roasted red peppers, pistachio pesto, arugula, Sauteed Broccoli Rabe ( known in Italian as rapini, a green vegetable that looks like leafy broccoli but is more closely related to the turnip. Broccoli rabe (Brassica ruvo) is also called rapini, raab, or rabe (both pronounced "rahb"), bitter broccoli, and turnip broccoli. It's botanically closer to turnips and the taste is more like mustard or turnip greens.) and their famous Long Hots. I had to have a deep discussion about what a long hot was. So here's the lowdown- Long Hots - peppers are known for their mild to medium level of spiciness. In

terms of flavor, Long Hots offer a subtle sweetness with a hint of heat, making them a favorite among those who enjoy a milder spice profile and are imported from Italy (Stephanie suggested that it's like the datil pepper which is indigenous to here) There is also a Long Hots pepper oil that Derita's keeps in stock so ask for it and you may just surprise yourself at how much you love the flavor!

A PHILLY-STYLE ITALIAN PORK SANDWICH is a thing of beauty, or so the South Philly's think.. It is heaped with roasted pork, smothered in drippy broccoli rabe (or spinach, depending on who you’re talkin’ to), topped with peppers, laden with a base of gooey provolone cheese, and served on a perfectly crisp yet soft Italian roll. Some say that because it's layered with flavors it is far more satisfying than your average cheesesteak. Let us let you decide! Derita's serves this every Sunday. Sunday only you ask? This Italian roll sandwich popularized in Philadelphia by Italian immigrants is a variation of the Italian street food dish known as porchetta. Roast Pork is commonly served during Christmas celebrations and on Sundays. So keeping up with traditions, Derita's serves this every Sunday. But make sure you call ahead so that it doesn't sell out on you!

Last but not least the CHICKEN CUTLET. Hand-breaded and deep-fried to a golden brown, this well-seasoned tender chicken cutlet is good on its own, but add some of Derita's special combinations and you have something like no other. My personal favorite is the DDD, tender juicy chicken cutlet, fried eggplant (yes and so good) Prosciutto, Fresh Mozzarell, Roasted Red Peppers, Broccoli Rabl, Long Hots, and a balsamic glaze. This sandwich is packed with so much flavor that you can not stop taking bite after bite! And trust me the small is good enough for two but I ain't sharin!

My son is all about the Cutlet Parm..that's right, a chicken parm dinner served up in the most perfect bread brought in from Liscio's Bakery(Philly) Soft on the inside and crusty on the out. Just perfect to hold all the juicy chicken, melty mozzarell, and homemade tomato sauce. Perfection!

Derita's food is as authentic as it gets and they are proud to serve the finest imported ingredients which make their hoagies a step above the rest!

Philadelphia became home to the second-largest ItalianAmerican population in the United States. The legacy of the Italian and Italian-American identity endures in Philadelphia and it’s a testament to a strong beautiful culture filled with lasting traditions, deep community ties, and incredible pride, something that Stephanie and Joe have brought with them to Derita's and is hoping to share with you all!

A Powerful Connection for Good Community Nutcracker & Dreams Come

Q: What inspired the collaboration between Community Nutcracker and Dreams Come True, and what are the main goals of this partnership?

Since 1992, Community Nutcracker has brought Northeast Florida a beloved holiday tradition, featuring over 200 performers in an artistic celebration of dance and storytelling. In 2005, the organization partnered with Dreams Come True, united by a shared passion for giving back. Together, their goal is to raise funds to sponsor dreams for local children battling life-threatening conditions while showcasing the dedication of both organizations.

Q: How do funds raised benefit children supported by Dreams Come True?

100% of funds raised through Community Nutcracker performances go directly toward fulfilling dreams for children facing life-threatening medical conditions. These dreams range from Disney trips to new pets, bringing hope and light during challenging times. Since 2005, this partnership has raised $435,000 and sponsored 96 dreams, creating unforgettable moments for families.

Q: What unique experiences does Community Nutcracker offer to children involved in Dreams Come True?

In addition to raising funds for local children’s dreams, the Community Nutcracker also provides a very unique experience for one special child each year and to the many children they have sponsored.

Each year, one special dreamer gets to participate in the opening act at the Community Nutcracker’s Community Service Night, which is hosted on the Thursday evening of the performance week. The Dreamer gets a behind-the-scenes tour of the Florida Theatre and a special introduction to all the performers. The best moment comes when he/she appears on stage to assist Herr Stahlbaum with the narration of The Nutcracker Ballet story to the audience.

In the audience at the Thursday evening Community Service Night performance are hundreds of individuals and families representing charities supported by the Community Nutcracker, including Dreams

True

Come True. Several dream families impacted by the generosity of the Community Nutcracker get, at no cost to them, the opportunity to watch the beauty of The Nutcracker Ballet.

Q: How do volunteers and community members contribute to this collaboration?

Community Nutcracker, a nonprofit organization, relies on over 300 performers, 20 board members, and numerous volunteers. These individuals dedicate time to producing the ballet, hosting events, and supporting Dreams Come True initiatives, including decorating for dream parties and organizing community activities.

Q: Can you share an inspiring success story from this collaboration?

In 2022, a Dreamer named Liliana, whose sister danced in the ballet, experienced her Disney dream thanks to funds raised by Community Nutcracker. Another Dreamer, Saddie, inspired by the partnership, hosted a toy drive during Christmas, collecting over 200 toys for local families.

Q: What are the long-term aspirations for this collaboration?

The partnership aims to expand its impact, ensuring every eligible child’s dream is fulfilled despite rising costs. By combining the beauty of dance with the mission of giving back, the collaboration continues to inspire personal growth, community values, and hope for the future.

Travaeling Exhibit at MOSH

Lives Eliminated, Dreams Illuminated (LEDI) is a powerful multimedia exhibit that combines art, music, and animation to honor the memories of girls and young women whose lives were tragically cut short during the Holocaust. Drawing from archival photographs, LEDI features poignant portraits that reimagine the futures these individuals were denied, restoring dignity through creative expression. The exhibit seeks to personalize their stories, shed light on the horrors they endured, and spark meaningful dialogue about the Holocaust and the alarming rise of antisemitism today.

Each portrait is paired with its corresponding historical photograph and accompanied by an audio guide featuring music and commentary from the artists, offering deeper insights into each individual’s story. By presenting these narratives through a blend of art, history, and education, LEDI encourages empathy, combats hatred, and inspires a commitment to building a more compassionate future.

Through traveling exhibitions and educational programs designed for students in grades 7–12, LEDI works to foster understanding and strengthen communities. Sponsored by the Dr. David M. Milch Foundation, the initiative highlights the transformative power of art to connect people and challenge all forms of oppression.

Currently on display at the Museum of Science and History (MOSH) in Jacksonville, LEDI continues to expand its reach, using art and education to illuminate history and create positive change in the modern world.

Ali Lindenfeld, Jacksonville Lead Facilitator, who organizes the program at MOSH says....

“Working with this incredible group at LEDI is humbling, and being able to educate people of all ages about the oppression that has occurred worldwide has been life changing. I am truly blessed to be shaping and empowering future leaders of this community.”

Paws of Change

Building a Compassionate Future with the Humane Society

Our organization underwent a profound transformation 14 years ago when a visionary Board of Directors embarked on a mission to revolutionize animal welfare in St. Augustine. At that time, the prevailing approach to address the predicament of homeless animals centered around animal sheltering and adoption. However, through extensive research and analysis, we discovered a stark reality: simply adopting our way out of overpopulation was an insufficient solution.

Recognizing the need for a paradigm shift, our forward-thinking Board realized that education, spay/neuter services, and providing resources for pet owners were paramount. They understood that prevention and proactivity were the keys to making a lasting impact on our community. The result? Fewer animals would have to endure the distress of entering shelters in the first place.

Since those formative re-beginnings, the St. Augustine Humane Society has truly evolved into a vital safety net for pet owners, addressing the root causes that lead them to surrender their beloved companions. We go above and beyond by offering low-cost veterinary services, operating a Pet Food Pantry, organizing training and behavior workshops, and much more.

Since 2015, our clinic has proudly stood as the sole facility of its kind in St. Johns County. This distinction is attributed to our status as an ASPCA Spay Neuter Alliance trained facility, a distinction shared by only 195 clinics nationwide. Our unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation has placed us at the forefront of animal welfare, as a beacon of hope for pets and their owners in our community.

But it’s not just our facility or programs that set us apart: it’s the extraordinary dedication of our staff and volunteers. Each member of our team possesses a passion for our mission and a shared commitment to giving back to the community. They embody the true spirit of service, finding great reward in making a positive difference in the lives of animals and their human companions. I am immensely proud to lead this exceptional group of individuals .

Come Along for the Ride

The First Coast YMCA Eyes Expansion in 2025

While the holidays are undoubtedly a time to reflect on the past year with friends and family, it’s also an opportunity to look ahead to 2025. At the First Coast YMCA, we’re incredibly excited to see what’s just around the corner for several of our branches in St. Johns County and we want you to be a part of that journey with us.

If you’ve lived in St. Johns County for any length of time, chances are you’ve driven by or visited our Ponte Vedra location. Over the past couple of years, the branch has transitioned from the Ponte Vedra YMCA to the Brown Family YMCA. Support from the Brown family jumpstarted our capital campaign, and additional support from the Newman Family Foundation brought our incredibly popular Maguire Family Pickleball Center to light – literally! While that support has been warmly welcomed, we still need help to adequately serve one of the fastest growing regions of Northeast Florida. Our overall campaign goal will cover critical renovations needed in the branch, including new locker rooms, a renovated KidZone and Teen Center, and upgraded equipment in

our Wellness Center. We’re close to that goal and we’d invite anyone who is passionate about ensuring the Ponte Vedra community has access to healthy living programming that impacts people of all ages and abilities, to please consider supporting the campaign at fcymca.org/donate. We’re targeting for renovations to start by the middle of 2025 and can’t wait to show you what that will look like when it’s complete.

Speaking of exciting developments, not too far across the county in the Durbin community lies the site of the next, brandnew facility within the First Coast YMCA family - the Peyton Family YMCA. The facility, which will be located on East Peyton Parkway just to the east of Highway 9B, will be a major part of a 40-acre, $150 million health complex which will feature a hospital and other medical services. The branch is expected to be one of the largest within the First Coast YMCA and will serve a major need in providing healthy resources to a growing number of families in southern Duval and northern St. Johns Counties. Construction on the facility is expected to begin in 2025

and, like the Brown Family YMCA, there are opportunities for you as a community member to help see this facility come to fruition. If you’d like to support this project, please contact me at chunter@fcymca.org. One of the things we pride ourselves most on at the First Coast YMCA is responding to needs in the community. For more than 115 years, we’ve been a direct reflection of the individual neighborhoods that we’re in as we constantly strive to be a central resource for people of all ages to live a healthy life. We’re only able to do that through support from our members and donors, and we wouldn’t be able to confidently move forward with the projects noted above without them. If that’s you, from all of us at the First Coast YMCA, thank you for your ongoing support this year and into 2025.

If you’d like to get involved for the first time, we’d love to have you be a part of our family. As you enjoy time with loved ones around the holidays, we hope next year is the healthiest year yet for you and that we can be a part of it every step of the way.

A Message From The Vet

FELINE CARE: Why Your Cat Deserves a Specialized Approach

CATS ARE EXTRAORDINARY CREATURES, EACH WITH THEIR OWN UNIQUE PERSONALITIES AND NEEDS. However, their care can be quite different from that of other pets, and understanding these differences is key to ensuring their health and happiness. This is why working with a veterinarian who is certified by the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) as a Feline Friendly Practice is so important.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A FELINE FRIENDLY PRACTICE?

An AAFP-certified Feline Friendly Practice is designed with your cat’s special needs in mind. This certification means the veterinary team has undergone additional training to understand feline-specific medical and behavioral requirements, including:

Stress-Free Handling: Cats can become easily stressed in unfamiliar environments. A feline-friendly practice uses gentle techniques, quiet spaces, and calming pheromones to help your cat feel more at ease during their visit.

Tailored Medical Care: Cats have unique physiological and medical needs that differ from other pets. Feline-friendly practices stay up-to-date on the latest research in feline medicine to provide the best possible care.

Environmental Considerations: From waiting rooms to exam rooms, these practices are designed to create a

cat-friendly environment with fewer stressors, like barking dogs or loud noises.

CATS HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS

Cats are not small dogs, and they have distinct physical, behavioral, and emotional requirements. For example:

1.Handling Sensitivities: Cats are particularly sensitive to touch, and improper handling can cause significant stress or even lead to health issues.

2.Unique Medical Conditions: Cats are prone to specific conditions, such as urinary tract disease, hyperthyroidism, and diabetes. Feline-friendly veterinarians are experienced in diagnosing and treating these ailments effectively.

3.Environmental Preferences: Cats thrive in environments tailored to their instincts, such as spaces for climbing, hiding, and scratching. Recognizing these needs is essential for reducing stress, both at home and during vet visits.

REDUCING STRESS FOR VET VISITS

One of the most common reasons cat owners avoid veterinary visits is fear of stressing their pet. While this concern is valid, delaying or skipping visits can have serious consequences for your cat’s health. Here are some tips to make the experience easier for both you and your cat:

Acclimate the Carrier: Make the carrier a familiar, comfortable space by leaving it out at home with cozy bedding and occasional treats.

Pheromones: Use feline pheromone sprays or diffusers to create a calming environment.

Calming Medications: For particularly anxious cats, your veterinarian may recommend a safe, short-acting calming medication to help reduce stress during the visit. These medications can make the experience more manageable for both you and your cat.

Choose the Right Practice: A felinefriendly veterinarian will ensure the experience is as smooth as possible by minimizing stressors and handling your cat gently.

THE IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR VETERINARY CARE

Even if your cat seems healthy, regular check-ups are critical for early detection of potential health issues. Cats are masters at hiding signs of illness, and conditions like dental disease, kidney problems, or arthritis can go unnoticed without routine care.

It’s important to talk to your veterinarian about a comprehensive plan to best care for your cat’s needs both physically and emotionally so that they can live their best life.
