Special European Safety Week Edition European Safety Week 2014 20 - 26 October

Welcome to our special European Safety Week edition newsletter. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) launched its Healthy Workplaces Campaign ‘Healthy Workplaces Manage Stress’ in May of this year. This is a two year campaign which encourages employers and employees to work together to successfully prevent work related stress and psychosocial risks. Whilst this is a two-year campaign the actual Campaign Week for 2014 is 20-26 October. Stress has consistently been one of the most commonly reported types of work-related illness cited in the national Labour Force Survey (LFS) conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Based on the LFS, estimated cases of work-related stress have remained broadly flat over the past decade.

From LFS data, work-related stress caused workers in Great Britain to lose 10.4 million working days in 2011/12. Work-related stress can be tackled by working well together and supporting each during periods of stress. We can all feel stressed at times when we feel as though everything becomes too much, when things get on top of us, or when we feel as though we are unable to cope. It affects us in different ways at different times and is often the result of a combination of factors in our personal and working lives.

The industries that reported the highest rates of total cases of workrelated stress were human health and social work, education and public administration and defence. The occupations that reported the highest prevalence rates of work-related stress were health professionals (in particular nurses), teaching and educational professionals and caring personal services (in particular welfare).

Importantly there is a difference between stress and pressure. We all experience pressure on a daily basis and need it to motivate us and enable us to perform at our best. It’s when we experience too much pressure without the opportunity to recover that we start to experience stress. In this newsletter you will find information on what stress is; what the signs are and how to best manage it; tips for reducing stress and details of our Employee Assistance Helpline, which is a free and confidential service for you and your family. There is also a quick stress test questionnaire for you to use to see how you rate and if you might need to consider moderating your lifestyle to reduce your stressors.
