sabal lounge Chair

Sabal lounge chair is an armless chair with a transformable seat cushion that is designed for all seasons. The aim of my design is not only offering a convenient way to adjust seasonal changes but also satisfying people's physical and psychological demands of home comfort.

03

Left: a wicker armchair suitable for summer (Avenue Lifestyle, 2016); above: a wool fur armchair suitable for winter (B&B Italia, 2012).

Background The changing seasons affect many aspects of our lives. We change our clothing style in different seasons or dress in layers for the multi-weather day in order to keep the preferred temperature. We also implement other changes to stay comfortable in our environment, such as eating different types of food, engaging in different activities or simply turning on air-conditioners and heaters. These behaviours are all affected by seasons, just as the cold weather might inspire a sweater, it may also inspire warmer tones and accent colours in the living room. we would like to also adjust our living space and furniture to adapt to seasonal switches. Therefore, I am interested in how season affects furniture design and what kinds of simple design changes can be suitable for all seasons.

How Does Seasonality Affect Furniture Design? How to Increase the Seasonal Adaptability and Variability of Furniture?

‘How Can One Piece of Furniture Become More Suitable for Different Seasons?’

04

Initial Insights I have searched for ‘seasonal furniture’ and sorts of keywords online and also done some observation from the furniture fair in Milan. Then, I have found that the seasonal furniture always linked to outdoor furniture or patio furniture, etc. It is only a few cases that indoor furniture was designed for the different seasons. Maybe it is because the impacts of seasonal switches on the outdoor environment were much bigger than the indoor spaces. Thus, I was wondering how can we bring nature and seasonal changes back into the house? Additionally, I have also found some traditional solutions to this issue. For example, there are some seasonal products for adjusting furniture with the different seasons in East Asian countries. People would add bamboo seat cushions or water cushions for the cooling demands or use furry seat cushions or blankets for the heating needs. Furthermore, they have some traditional furniture in severe winters and sweltering summers, such as Japanese Kotatsu for warmth and Taiwanese lounger for siesta. Although these clever objects can offer useful functions, I think maybe we can find a new and better way to make that seasonal furniture more suitable for the modern living environment.

Left: Taiwanese lounger for siesta in summer; middle: bamboo seat cushions for the cooling demands; right above: furry seat cushions for warmth; right below: Japanese Kotatsu for the heating needs.

05

Research In the past, it was usual for people to swap their heavy textiles from cold-weather months for lighter one in warm-weather months, and to cover thick-upholstered furnishings with light (in colour and weight) slipcovers. Nevertheless, there are fewer people doing this today probably because of the expense or the lack of time (Gorelick, L., 2012). The seasonal decorating transition is not easy for everyone due to it means a lot more work and often the need for furniture storage during the opposite season. Nowadays, people would not like to put that much time, effort, and money into their seasonal adaptation works (Moore, M., 2018). I did some interviews with my families and friends by asking them ‘How do you switch your furniture with the seasons? If you could provide the photos for explaining clearly, that will be great.’ Then, I have found that many people who live in Taiwan, especially in the countryside, have a kind of traditional furniture like the left photos. The sort of sofa was normally made of solid woods and some of them had more than one seat surface which was made of woven rattan or marble. You could decide to sit on the wooden side or flip to the other texture/material side. Also, you could sit on it directly without cushions to have a cool feeling in summer; when the weather turned cold, you could put the leather cushions with thick foam on the furniture to have warmth. On the other hand, it meant you need a storage space to store the seat cushions in summer. Hence, some of my interviewees said that they like the useful function, but the cushions take up too much space in the room in the opposite season. Some of them were too lazy to switch the soft furnishings for different seasons, so they just put the additional seat pad on the original seat cushion for getting cool. In conclusion, if I can keep the good characteristic of transformation from this kind of furniture and solve the problems of inconvenience, then it will help to create a new form of furniture suitable for seasonal changes.

‘The key finding of my research is that people are actually interested in having different feelings from furniture over seasons, but there are also a few reasons stop people from taking it into action. Firstly, people are usually too lazy to switch the furniture for seasonal changes. Secondly, cushions and soft furnishings take up too much storage space during the seasons that people do not need them.’ 06

The Sketches of Final Design

Design Iteration Concept Ideation The intention of what I hope to achieve is ‘offering great convenience to do the seasonal adjustment.’ Also, the transformable upholstery is the key part of my design. I think that just taking one or a few steps could make our perception of the armchair different. I've tried different ways to store something you don't want to use it in the opposite seasons such as throws and blankets in the summertime. My idea was not just to hide it but also provide more functions like becoming seat cushions or for decoration. After sketching (see right pictures and the appendix) and making some quick mock-ups, I was going to make an armchair with metal frame and upholstery, it had a simple and organic shape and the cushion could be transformed by folding. Moreover, the cushion could show different patterns, colours and textures on each side and have a dramatic change between summer and winter.

Simple & Comfortable, Feel Warm & Secure, Stay Cool & Relaxed.

08

Mock-ups In my opinion, making mock-ups is a better way than just sketching for developing new furniture. Because furniture is like a kind of 3D sculpture, 2D drawings only could record the ideas, but not display the relatively accurate scale or details of the structure. Furthermore, mock-ups can be modified easily, so it helps to have a fast progress for the design development. I used thin wire and canvas fabric for making quick mock-ups and tried to develop new forms with no scale. Then, I made some bigger size mock-ups on the 1/6 scale and thought about the upholstery. In addition, I adjusted a few details like the height and the radian of the seat to have a more comfortable look. Eventually, I decided on the final design on the 1/3 scale. (see the below photos)

CAD Drawings

v.1

Due to my design had an organic shape and many curves, it was very difficult to make a one to one size model directly and keep every angle of my mock-up. Therefore, I drew a CAD model by SolidWorks from measuring the 1/3-scale mock-up, printed it out for making a full-size paper model and then adjusted the form again. For instance, I would observe the forms and dimensions of existing armchairs and consider the aesthetic of all shape, the way of connections and characteristics of materials, and then modify the details of my drawings.

Material & Colour Plans Based on my research about seasonal mood boards and living aesthetics, I made some plans for material and colour choices. First of all, I needed to decide the frame colour and material. I have considered that it should be strong enough to take the stress from sitting, also matching the common texture in our living environment. I chose steel tubes which were 16mm in diameter to get the strength and the fair cost, and 5mm steel wires to have the strength and elegant looks. The metal frame finally had a dark green surface resulting from the inspiration of leaves. I thought the colour was good to match the contemporary interior spaces and other furnishings, likewise, it was a nice background for bringing the seat cushion out. The second part was deciding the materials and colours for the seat cushion. I have made some fabric combinations using various permutations of the representative colours from four seasons. Besides, I could not find the fabric which had a great pattern for spring and affordable prices for me at the same time; therefore, I printed on 100% cotton fabrics with my pattern design for spring (see the below pictures). As a result, I chose the watercolour painting-like texture with vivid colours, such as light tone of blue, pink, yellow and orange, to represent spring vibes; light teal coloured linen fabric and cream colour Binca cross stitch fabric to copy the cool scents from the beach in summer; brown velvet looked like fallen leaves and the scenery of autumn; white faux fur related to the first snowfall of winter but let you feel warm like arctic animals.

The final colour plan for main structure and upholstery 13

Making Process There were two main procedures for the making process of the prototype. The first of that was making the main structure which was the metal frame. Afterwards, making the upholstery that meant the fabric seat cushion followed the frame shape. Also, the cushion design was inspired by coffee filter paper, it could have 3D curve while it was opening.

Main structure_The Metal Frame (15-20 working days)

1. Printing out the full-size drawings for each component. 2. Measuring and estimating the amount of material. 3. Cutting the steel tubes and wires with a more than 10cm tolerance for each component. 4. Following the angles on the drawings and bending the tubes and wires with the curving machines.

The following contents were the steps of these two making process. Main Structure_The Metal Frame >> Measuring >> Cutting >> Bending >> Drilling >> Welding >> Finishing Upholstery_The Fabrics Seat Cushion >> Pattern Making >> Ironing >> Cutting >> Sewing >> Finishing

14

5. Spot welding the tubes first to make a test version of the main structure. 6. Sticking the wires on the structure with masking tape. 7. Checking the length, position, and angle of each component. 8. Recording every point which should be improved. 9. Making accurate moulds to modify the details such as the angle of the joint between tubes. 10. Rubbing the ends of tubes by hand files to have perfect angles. 11. Welding together each component. 12. Sanding any protrusion on the joints by the sander. 13. Welding and securing the main structure after making sure that everything is ok.

15

14. Marking the positions of the middle wires to get the spacing just right. 15. Sticking the wires on the structure with masking tape again. 16. Checking the shape and angle of the whole frame. 17. Making small dents with a hammer and a metal centre punch on the marks. 18. Drilling 2.5mm diameter holes on the tubes by the hand driller first, and then drilling 5mm diameter holes. 19. Putting the wires into the holes and welding them together. 20. Spraying the first layer of primer and waiting for 20 minutes to dry. 21. Filling all the holes and gaps with filler. 22. Sanding any protrusion on the surface by sandpaper. 23. Spraying the second layer of primer to get a nice base painting. 24. Spraying a layer of colour painting and waiting for 24 hours to dry. 25. Spraying two layers of matt clear lacquer to protect the surface. 26. Waiting for totally dry and have finished.

16

Upholstery_the fabric seat cushion (2-3 working days)

1. Hand drawing the template which is following the metal frame with a more than 10cm tolerance for each side. 2. Scanning the drawing and tracing it by Adobe Illustrator. 3. Printing out the full-size paper template. 4. Making a test version of the cushion with canvas fabric, cheaper fur, and Binca cross stitch fabric by the sewing machine.

Fabric templates 17

5. Adjusting some details like using a double-sided and longer zip to increase the convenience of flipping the cushion to the different side. 6. Ironing the fabric to make it flat. 7. Cutting the fabric and wadding by following the templates, especially using a cutter knife for cutting fur to avoid cutting too much hair. 8. Sewing the fabric and wadding together from the inside by the sewing machine. 9. Sewing the zip on the fabric of summer and autumn sides. 10. Sewing the fabric of winter and autumn together, but keeping an unsewn part on fur. 11. Sewing the fabric of spring and summer together. 12. Sewing and assembling all pieces of four seasons together. 13. Sewing the final end on the outside of fur by the hand sewing.

Final Outcome Introduction Sabal lounge chair is an armless chair with a transformable seat cushion, designed for all seasons. I came up with the design after my research revealed that people want to have different sensation from furniture between seasons. However, people are usually too lazy to switch the furniture for seasonal changes, also the cushions and soft furnishings take up too much space in the room in the opposite season. Thus, the intention of what I hope to achieve is offering great convenience to do the seasonal adjustment on the furniture scale. My aim is to create a new type of furniture to suit different seasons and bring nature back into our homes. The metal frame of Sabal lounge chair was inspired by the shape and the meaning of leaves. Leaves would change its form and colour by following the seasonal switches. The seat cushion of Sabal lounge chair can be transformed into at least five looks, as it has four kinds of fabrics on each side. By easily flipping to the other side or turning inside out, it can be shown different colours, textures, and materials to represent four seasons. Additionally, people can fold the cushion in half to get more coolness and comfort in summer. In summary, it is not only for seasonal needs which are easily switching the appearance of furniture but also satisfying people's physical and psychological demands of home comfort.

Instructions The cushion has four sides and each is patterned cotton fabric for spring, linen and cross stitch fabric for summer, pre-quilted diamond patterns velvet for autumn, and faux fur for winter. As the left photos, we can see the spring side and the summer side are on the outside in that case. Hence, when we want to have a transition from spring to summer, we only need to easily flip it to the other side; likewise, switching the cushion from autumn to winter is the same way. Another thing should be known is that we can make the cushion flatter and fluffier though patting or shaking it. Moreover, the two timings for turning the cushion cover inside out are from summer to autumn and from winter to spring. Like the previous explanation, if the spring/summer sides are on the outside, then the autumn/winter sides are on the inside. In that situation, if we want to have an autumn look for the chair, and we could find a zip in the middle of the summer side and undo the zip. We can pull up the inside layer through the hole and turn it inside out. While the autumn/winter sides have been totally turned inside out and we can do the zip up afterwards.

The Application of

Wood Lamination

It’s a module of the wine rack which are made of bamboo veneers and bendy plywood. You could stack two or more of this to become layers like sea waves and they can balance on themselves and bottles. Or it can be hung on the wall and become a kind of decoration.

23

Research Phase Visits to Lamination Factories The aim of this ‘material & process’ project is to experience a whole manufacturing process and thinking through making. We have gained first-hand knowledge and tips about how to do wood lamination well by visiting two factories: Isokon+ and Toby Winteringham Company.

Isokon+ The information below was from the chair maker Mark. In Mark's experience, Beech and Birch are great for laminating but Walnut, Oak and Ash are really nice to work with too. They use aero ply for some of our most extreme bends. His favourite material for making molds with is Ply wood but he said MDF works fine, he advised using a CNC machine to produce the male and female mold for greater accuracy. Moreover, Formaldehyde glue is the only glue they use and he advised against the use of PVA as it does not have the strength of formaldehyde glue. Mark also said they use aluminium sheets between these molds for having a cleaner smoother outcome. He likes sash clamps best but sometimes a nice strong G clamp might be needed. Mark told us a tip for extra curvature. Soak the wood in water and let it dry in the mold overnight. But they do not use this technique on any of their products because its too time consuming. He also said to always do a dry run (no glue) in the mold to make sure none of the wood has any weak points. These two useful tips I have tried in the following process.

Toby Winteringham Company Toby showed us the processes of bag-pressing, steam bending and wood laminating with female and male molds. Moreover, I learned from him and the internet about the procedure of bent lamination, it can be a process with 5 main steps like the list: I. Making the Molds II. Laminating the Plywood III. Shaping the Pieces IV. Assembly V. Painting and Finishing. Toby said that every manufacturer has their own principle of controlling the hot-pressing time and temperature like the left pictures. In general, providing the higher temperature in the pressing process could help to shorten the time. There are many ways to heat up, such as steam, wire or hot sand, etc. Additionally, the mold is the key point of a successful bent-laminating process. Good molds could provide the perfect shape and pressure, let you have a smooth and fast making process. Toby shared some tips for successful lamination with us. (1) Veneers for laminating usually have the thickness that ranges from 0.6 mm to 1.5 mm. (2) Compare to short-grain veneers, long-grain veneers are harder to be bending but with stronger structures. (3) The time of pressing timbers should last as long as possible and at least 24 hours. (4) Using finished surface veneers to be the covers of laminating is more convenient than sanding the surfaces of laminated plywood. (5) Bent lamination (and steam bending as well) is a process of trial and error. 24

The Direction of Exploration I used to think that plywood is a kind of cheap, rough and flat materials. After I knew more about the differences between plywood and lamination, lamination has a better aesthetic quality in my opinion. In the beginning or exploration, I would like to try and make some streamlining shapes and weaving stripes by bent lamination like above photos. I quite liked the cross effects of these wood shapes, but I considered that I had to change the forms to fit the requirement of laminating process.

The Inspiration After I found these photos from the internet, I got an inspiration and have decided the following direction. The installations in the picture were a bent plywood display which was for use at their booth in the designboom mart at ICFF and its molds. That was their first attempt at making bent plywood, but it looked really fantastic. They designed and built very good molds and the result was amazing. Hence I tried to design a product with this wave-shape by bent lamination.

Concept Ideation

Sketches & Mock-ups

I want to use bamboo veneers and bendy plywood to make a wine rack. It’s a module of the wine rack and these can be combined together. In addition, bamboo is a kind of hardwood-like material which is fast growing, hard wearing, well-elastic and lightweight. You could stack two or more of this to become layers like sea waves and they can balance on themselves and bottles. Or it can be hung on the wall and become a kind of decoration. The following steps are drawing the real size mold shape, using CNC machine to make the mold for higher accuracy, and doing experiments and improving the product balance of using process.

Background Depression is a common mental disorder. Globally, more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression. Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease.

Rates of depression among young people have increased. “Everyone has a black dog in their life.”means everybody might have chance to feel depressed. Therefore, we want to design for Mental Health.

More women are affected by depression than men. At its worst, depression can lead to suicide. There are effective treatments for depression (WHO, 2017).

Black dog, a term coined by Samuel Johnson and popularized by Sir Winston Churchill, referring to their major depressive disorders. (Wikipedia) Books “I Had a Black Dog” & ”Living With A Black Dog” Author: Matthew Johnstone (2007 & 2009) Film “I had a black dog, his name was depression.” Director: Will Hutchinson (2010).

42

Research The opend-question “What will you do/ what will heal you when you are depressed/unhappy/feel nervous?” And then we found a phenomenon from the answers. There were a lot of people chose negative ways to face and deal with their stress, like smoking or shopping, although most of those solutions could not really solve the problem. Also based on our research, Ji Jianlin, the director of the Department of mental health, Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University, said, "in the domestic depression population, only 10% to 20% of the patients were diagnosed by a regular hospital. “ And the number of patients who willing to receive treatment is less than 10%. One of the reasons is both patients and their families are feeling humiliated about disease”. Thus, we want to provide more positive ways to de-stress.

Existing Solutions Existing products, such as de-stress books, apps and toys, have some limitations. Apps: only focus on timer, music, voice/text guide and training. Cards, Books: reading makes keeping thinking. Toys: just using for temporary fun or avoiding be bored. We think that using de-stress kits like someone tries to lose weight, the most important part is the continuity.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Don’t “THINK”, but “FEEL”. 「S.T.O.P.」4 steps to de-stress S(stop thinking and doing anything) T(take a breath) O(observe self-feelings) P(proceed to face the problem)

Concept Ideation According to our research, Mindfulness-based stress reduction is a useful approach to reduce the feeling of stress, and they use the skills like meditation, body awareness, and yoga. It has many beneficial effects, including stress reduction, relaxation, and improvements to the quality of life.

Our Design Goal

We want to design an interesting and attractive healing product and increase young people’s (20-40 years old) willingness for doing “self-care of mental health”.

Although it is a professional program, there are some simple guides teaching people to do practices in daily life. For example, STOP is the 4 steps to de-stress and the main idea is "don't think, but feel." And we found that all of the mindfulness methods have the same step which is teaching you to take a deep breath in the beginning. It is very easy but sometimes we would forget we can do that when we are in the depression. Therefore, we want to design an interesting and attractive healing product that people would persistently want to use it and take a breath. By shifting their attention from negative emotions to sensory and cheerful experience.
